Diner Reviews
  • "Came to celebrate a milestone birthday; everything was delicious. Standouts were the asparagus soup and the steak. Service, as always, was completely on point."

  • "One of the best meals I've ever had. Everything we tried was excellent, especially the duck liver mousse, bacon beignets, and bavette steak. Cozy place with great service. also loved that the house wine is available by the ounce. "

  • "This was my second time dining at Frances and it was simply delightful. Our waitress was warm but not intrusive and the food was outstanding."

  • "With one word..... Amazing! Great dining experience.there s a reason why they re packed every night."

  • "The four of us came and all of us were very happy with everything!!! We got all the bouches! Beets were fabulous, duck liver mousse beyond tasty, bacon beignets (need i have to say yum?) and turnip empanada was light and tasty--not oily at all!!! Kale and chicory salads were light and not overdressed! Great combinations of flavors in both! Soup was delicious Steak cooked to perfection! Halbut tender! Sides were very flavorful as well!!! Chocolate dessert was delicious as was strawberry rhubarb pie! And you cant go wrong with the boozy affagato! Service was spot on!!!! Drinks creative and festive. Main courses take a bit to get out so this is. Not a dine and dash! It gets loud! But the energy is great !! Bravo!!!!!!!"

  • "We ordered 5 or so appetizers and small plates, which were very good. The beet salad is wonderful, kale salad is good, but a little "meh." The service was good, but they were slow to refill wine and/or water. Ambiance is new and a bit minimalist. I would definitely go back."

  • "You can see why this restaurant is always on the top lists. The food lives up to the hype and the ambiance is what feels like sophisticated neighborhood gem. The duck live mousse is a must! It is not something I would usually order but we decided Frances was the place to try it and we were very right. The house wine is a great deal, I would get it every time. Everything was delicious, the timing of food was perfect, and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience."

  • "Halibut was incredible. The only miss on the food for me was the turnip empanada. The poppyseed cake was an excellent and refreshing end to the meal."

  • "Excellent beet salad. I had the steak - nothing particularly remarkable; prepared as ordered (med rare), but not a standout in terms of taste. My companion had the halibut and it was excellent! THAT dish was perfect in terms of preparation (cooked exceptionally well), texture, and flavors - aided tremendously by the various accoutrements on the plate. (I almost ordered the halibut as a follow up to the steak.) Desserts: strawberry/rhubarb 'pie' was a miss for me - deep fried with too much dough. The poppy seed dessert was much better - very nice mix of textures and flavors on the plate. Service by Melissa as the primary wait person was excellent (accommodating without being overbearing) as well as the lady who provided back up."

  • "Great food as always. We had a vegan friend join us and the resto was extremely accommodating offering their delicious vegetables with creative carbs minus the animal products."
    Dined on 4/3/2014
  • "The food was simply amazing! Everything we ordered was delicious. The bacon beignets are a must-try and the bavette steak was rich and melt-in-your mouth. The wine list is extensive and offers a good range of tastes and price points. The wait staff was friendly and on top of it. Will definitely go back!"

  • "I had a really exceptional time at Frances over the weekend. It was a party of two, and the restaurant was completely filled, however the service was as if we were the only ones there. - The food: sublime. Dessert…just do it. - The service was TOP. Warm, charming and i was completely surprised when the end of my spoon accidentally slipped into my plate and touched a bit of sauce (to which i said softly, "oh darn", which really wasn't the BIGGEST deal). Before I knew it, someone swooped in and replaced my spoon for a nice clean one. Just lovely! - Ambiance: Tables were closer together. I find that strangely intimate. Keep to yourself and your guest, or smile and share a quick word with the table beside you. Do as you please. MUST VISIT!"

  • "Best dining experience I've had in SF & I've had some very very good meals. The food was creative, delicious & just the right portions. We happen to have the best table in the place - round table for 4 in window. Sommelier was excellent, server was very good but a bit standoffish which is why I only gave 4 stars instead of 5. Took us a year & a half to sort out a time to get in but worth hanging in there & not just giving up."

  • "We went here for the first time and loved it! The whole dinner was just amazing, and with a good balance of options even though one of us was vegetarian. Each course was a true delight and the value for money was outstanding. Service was prompt, friendly but not overbearing...just right. The only slight disappointment was that this place is so popular that the tables are quite small and seated a little too close to one another, but this does give you a good opportunity to scope out all the other dishes you couldn't order, and it can be nice to share the excitement of a dish with those around you. We'd definitely love to go back there soon."

  • "We tried and tried to get a res for a Sat. night but to no avail. We heard such wonderful things about Frances that we finally decided to suck it up and take a 5:30 reservation on a Sun. eve. We were so thrilled with our dining experience! Since we'd never been to Francs we ordered as much as we thought our stomachs could handle. For starters we had the beignets and turnip empanadas. Both were tasty. The stars of the evening came in our 2nd and 3rd course. In the 2nd course, we had the garlic soup and the squid ink linguine. The linguine was out of this world! For main courses, we had the halibut and the duck breast. This duck might have been the best duck preparation I've had in my 46 years of life. True heaven!! We will be back ASAP!!"

  • "Frances is one of my favorite restaurants--every meal has been delicious!! I appreciate the smaller menu but still with amazing choices. The wait staff is always so friendly. Look forward to my next dinner there!"

  • "We went to Frances for dinner. We started off with the Bacon Beignets. This was fabulous. It was so light and airy. The flavor was outstanding. Next we had the Duck Liver Mousse. It also had pickled onions that complemented the Duck Liver and crispy bread. Next we had the Squid Ink Linguine. It was very nice and the squid ink really came through. We had the Duck Breast as an entree. The duck was cooked perfectly. But, I really didn't care for the spices that were on the duck and there were too much citrus for my liking. We had the Lumberjack Cake and the Toasted Poppy Seed Genoise. They were both great. The Lumberjack Cake was the better desert and it was full of flavor. The Poppy Seed was more subtle and light."

  • "Five Stars for Scrumptious Food, Awesome Service, Nice Ambiance, Friendly & Energetic Crowd!!!!!! We spent our Valentine's Day celebration here at Frances last February 16, 2014."

  • "Found this restaurant using a web search "best in SF" and this was an amazing find! Awesome locally sourced organics and farm-to-table concept superbly executed by an obviously talented chef. Small plates to start: beet salad was divine and the linguine pasta with a very light fish sauce was one of the best we have ever enjoyed! Both entrees were superb - a halibut that was expertly cooked to perfect temperature and a spinach pasta entree that was divine, not soggy and a flaky pastry wrapper around perfect spinach. Those in SF should run to this small but inviting neighborhood gem. Visitors make a reservation early and do what it takes to make your way to this inspired venue, it will not disappoint you!"

  • "ok, maybe that was an aggressive title but it was seriously one of the best meals i have enjoyed in a long time. the atmosphere is warm and relaxing, the food is *amazing*, portions are perfectly sized, the meals was paced superbly, and everyone was calm and friendly. will definitely be back and highly recommend eating here! i made a 9:30 reservation and we were one of the last people in the restaurant. they didn't rush us out or anything and the restaurant was quiet. loved everything about frances."

  • "This was one of the best restaurants i've been to in SFO. The food was delicious and interesting. A must is the squid pasta and duck. The wait staff was engaging, attentive and personable and the atmosphere was special. Make this a must visit!"

  • "This is a very nice cozy dining experience. The food is amazing. Fresh seasonal simple delightful. The price was such a surprise too! Actually much less expensive than other restaurants. Such a great evening for two. The only drawback is that the seating is rather tight but it is comfortable. Almost like sitting at the large family dining table over Thanksgiving dinner. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Frances is always a pleasant experience - this time it was truly amazing. The food and service were just that much better all around to make it a memorable visit. The crowd was definitely less touristy at a later hour, too - a big plus for enjoying this neighborhood fav."

  • "Amazing food, perfect atmosphere for a date or small group dinner. The beignets were incredible, along with the kale appetizer. The lamb entree melted in my mouth. Perfect all around!"
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "This is the second time I was here. The first time I was told that the menu would be seasonal but I didn't see much difference this time out. The menu is very limited so it really needs to rotate more. The galley seating is so close you feel like you are dining with your neighbors on both sides. The service was very poor. I had to keep re-asking and following up on things to get what I ordered. One dish came that was not ordered. Although I was not charged, I had to insist that I didn't order the dish. I won't be returning."

  • "Good, but not great. I'm torn on this one, there were things to really like about this restaurant, but I wasn't wowed by any one dish. I like the philosophy behind the style of cooking (farm-to-table), the flavors are very clean and uncomplicated. I thought the applewood smoke bacon beignets were more of zeppole-style (Italian donuts) and maybe a tad salty. That being said, I like the inventiveness of the dish and the bacon (and bacon grease) used to create it. The fish was cooked excellently, it was moist & tender with a light crust and the lamb was tasty without being gamey. I'm tempted to try dinner in another season, so I can try other dishes."

  • "Frances never disappoints. Spectacular food at a reasonable price."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "The food was all great but it didn't quite hit that high mark. The empanada was very flaky and the sauce had a lot of creme fraiche. The salad had an excess of candied dates. The black squid pasta was tasty although extremely fishy. The cod entree which was well seared but slightly bland. The market shot was similar to a sangria and was a highlight. The service was very good but again, nothing truly outstanding about it. The interiors are brown/cream colored with some nature-type touches such as a wood plank, reed arrangements etc. Small bar that was busy. By the end of our early meal, around 7 pm, there was a large group of people in line at the door. Not sure I would go back; at these prices, I would probably want to try somewhere else."

  • "Fresh food exquisitely prepared. A small, charming restaurant. Worth waiting for a reservation."
    Dined on 3/14/2014
  • "I enjoyed my meal at the restaurant. I was referred by a chef friend who was very complimentary. My only complaint is the closeness of the tables. You had to move a table to get out."
    Dined on 3/11/2014
  • "The food here is slightly experimental, very seasonal, and brilliantly technically executed. One of my favorite things is to order the market shot (alcohol plus an ingredient found that morning at a market) and guess the ingredients. It changes daily. Make sure to book long in advance, this place is always packed."
    Dined on 3/3/2014
  • "The food here was amazing. We had been once before when they first opened, and before they were written up in every food magazine in the country. We each got to try tastes of almost everything on the menu. Thank goodness we had a number of small starters. The mains took at least 45 minutes to arrive and I may be underestimating. Most annoying was the lack of any apology from the waiter."
    Dined on 2/13/2014
  • "We had a very nice meal. The appetizers were outstanding, especially the squid ink linguine. The service would be 5 stars if not for the fact that I have not gotten a call back from the restaurant regarding my lost umbrella, after the Maître d'hôtel assured me that they would be in touch and the restaurant is "good for it and will take care of it." I emailed Robert, the manager, when I got home, but so far there is no reply."

  • "Our first time dining at Frances, will go back. The food was tops from beginning to end. We had 5pm reservation and within half hour the place was full. Make reservation early in evening to get table, this was on a tues. Prices were worth the quality, on the high side but not bad, no complaints there"

  • "Everything was inventive and delicious. Loved the red house wine by the ounce, One of the best all around dining experiences I have had in SF--and I have tried them all!"

  • "Went to Frances for the first time for my birthday yesterday. The food was fabulous. Even the vegetarian option was fabulous and full of rich taste. The desserts were scrumptious. Absolutely a must try! We were very pleased."

  • "Bacon bignets, crab linquine, spinach salad. All some of the best I've ever had in my life. The entrees are pretty good, but don't compare to the small plates. I would eat there as much as I can afford."

  • "The overall experience was again FANTASTIC (3rd visit in two months). Located in a nice residential neighborhood with easy on street parking every time. Food: CRAZY GOOD - My wife & I shared everything to experience more of the menu. We enjoyed the small apps of Grilled Beet Salad with Burrata ($7) - Liver Mousse ($7) - Cauliflower soup ($10) - Roasted Baby Carrots with avocado ($8) - Squid Ink Pasta ($13) and one entree of the Dungeness Crab Risotto ($22) - Lumberjack Cake ($8) and a Boozy Affogato ($7) a MUST HAVE, if espresso is your thing. GREAT house blend wine (red or white) at $1.50 an ounce (only pay for what you drink, notches on the bottle). Note: The complimentary Josey Baker S.F. bread (upon request) is worth its weight in GOLD."

  • "gourmet restaurants know how to combine tastes and cook to perfection to make food exquisitely pleasing. frances uses these techniques but seems to focus on bringing out the natural flavors of the food. the cauliflower soup tastes cauliflowery. I know all good restaurants are supposed to aim for this today, but frances did it. so the food was delicious in a really clean way. this was probably the best restaurant meal I've had. And, when I asked for a full-bodied wine they sold by the glass, it was. On the downside, no noise dampening and sitting everyone side by side so close that you are nearer to other customers than your date who is just across the table. I know real estate is expensive in san francisco, but I hope this trend ends soon."
