Diner Reviews
  • "We loved Frances. The food, wine, and service were great. We ordered virtually everything that our waiter recommended, and everything was wonderful. Wines by the glass were reasonably priced. It's a small, quaint restaurant, and I'd recommend it to others for a date night or special occasion."

  • "It is difficult to get a reservation at Frances, but it was worth the effort. It is a very small establishment, so we had to wait about 20 min. for a table to become free. We ordered from the small but well chosen aperitif list to sip while we waited. Our main courses were the quail and the bavette steak, both excellent. The quail was mostly boned, very juicy and flavorful and served with a nice combination of corn, roasted potatoes, cipollini onions and padron peppers. The steak was served with farro, which soaked up the bordelaise sauce and juices and was delicious. Dessert was a plum/berry galette with an excellent crust and served with tart lime ice cream. Excellent service. Nice selection of wines by the glass."

  • "Frances came highly recommended to me from both online sources and friends. Loved the ambiance and the friendly service. Food was amazing of course too!"

  • "Each dish we tried was amazing! Perfectly seasoned. Beautiful presentation. You will not be dissappointed."

  • "Great, innovative menu. It should be framed for it's imagination alone. Food was hard to choose. It all looked so good. What we ordered was beyond expectation. Service matched the quality of the food. A tough reservation and challenging parking. It was all worth it."

  • "This little neighborhood corner location was well worth our finding. Such adventurous beverages, palatte pleasers and entrees. Everyone talked about the Bacon Beignets, which are light and tasty! My daughter, who rarely eats vegetables or fruit, enjoyed every veggie along with her steak, as well as nectarines and berries with the Panna Cotta. I got the Halibut, which was fabulous, and the Lumberjack Cake. Yum!"

  • "This was my 5th or 6th time dining here, and the experience was just as great as always. The food is always in season and expertly prepared. The standouts were the melon shooters to start and the bacon beignets. Not only is the food delicious, but the service is wonderful as well. My boyfriend dropped something off his plate, and one waiter picked it up within seconds and a new order came out about 5 minutes later without us requesting. I would definitely recommend Frances to anyone passing through San Francisco!"

  • "We have not been here for around 9 month, but all is still as we remember it: great food with some new seasonal updates, nice service. Keep going!"

  • "After a week of travel in 2 different cities, my wife and I embarked on a 10-minute cab ride from our downtown hotel to this neighborhood (and San Francisco) gem. In the previous cities we enjoyed alleged high-end food to our immense disappointment and Frances turned around our entire trip and set the stage for the enjoyment of our four remaining days in San Francisco and Napa. The wine list was well-selected, reasonable, and the recommended wines were a nice dinner complement. We started with the Applewood Smoked Bacon Beignets which were light and wonderful with the maple creme fraiche. The quail entree was excellent and the Harissa corn and Green Beans Caesar were a delight. Service was super. Highly, highly, highly recommended."

  • "$15 cab ride from downtown. Busy. Small plates for $8, main dishes $28, sides $9. Caesar Green Bean are terrible. $1.75 per person unknown charge - for sitting down? for water? for bread?"

  • "We've been here probably about 5 times in the past and had excellent meals and great service. This time, both were lacking. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. And our waiter was aloof and brusque. Definitely a disappointment given our previous dining experiences here. With all of the great restaurants in SF, I will not be rushing back here."

  • "We were seated right away. We tried their house red (by the ounce). Delicious and nice to pour just what we wanted. We had a bunch of appetizers then split an entree and a side. Everything was very good, but we especially liked the little gems salad and the pasta with anchovies. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the corn on the cob was our favorite part of the meal. We had the plum galette for dessert. It was a bit tart for me, but still delicious (my husband didn't think it too tart). The server was friendly and knowledgeable. Frances is loud and the tables are close, so it might not be my first pick for a romantic dinner, but everyone around us was having a great time; we felt like we'd been invited to a big party."

  • "Had to make a reservation weeks in advance because this is a very small space with tables packed so close to each other, you can not even take your seat without having the entire table pulled out in order for you to sit down. Ridiculous. You hear everything spoken by the tables next to you. There was a lot of staff for the small space, but service was very slow. Two hours, mostly with us waiting between courses for the next one to come. The food was very salty. Everything was OK, but really nothing was outstanding. Eating there was more of an ordeal than anything else."

  • "I made the reservation about 60 days out (a little ridiculous), but it was pretty easy. I was really excited to try the place out since I had heard such great things. My gf and I went for a special night out and enjoy high quality food. We had a prime time dining time. The atmosphere was really great, and the food was pretty fantastic. My gf said we had to get the Bacon Beignets, but my favorite dish by far was the calamari. Get that no matter what. The restaurant was a little cold for my liking, but it didn't seem like anyone else was disturbed by it. The wait staff seemed a little inattentive or a little uncaring about your experience. I think that was the only down side. I loved it and want to make it my reg spot. Go!"

  • "Frances was fine, but there's better city restaurants in that price range that are easier to get into. Everything we ate was good, just not the most memorable. Service was very good."

  • "The Santa Rosa Plum Galette was perfect. This chef understands the fine combination of his ingredients. It was perfect. Love the location. This is how females that are single love to dine. I wish this layout and the fast yet relaxed atmosphere were found in other cities where professional females live and work. A bit pricey but this is an experience for fine diners who want quality and not quantity."

  • "Loved the seasonal plum galette and wine recommendations! I wish I would've ordered more appetizers..instead of the entrée. Good service, busy place!"

  • "Frances is a very difficult place to get a reservation. the birthday boy could not make it but one of my friends subbed and was thrilled. From the moment you walk up until you ask for the check you are treated like a valued customer. We ordered about 10 different dishes including two entrees and shared everything. We especially liked the house wine sold by the ounce so that you never have to worry about too much or too little. not the usual poor house wine, but more in the European tradition of buying in bulk and pumping from the barrel. The fresh squeeze of the day was great too, something with fresh peaches this week. All I say is make a reservation ASAP and order everything to share. Thanks again Frances for a truly memorable meal."

  • "Wanted to like it: a pretty space, lively crowd, like the neighborhood. Food was good, but nothing special. Our server was not very good. Stand outs were the steak and house wine by the oz. Calamari appetizer and Salmon entree were average. Getting the servers attention was difficult. Despite numerous attempts we were unable to get any bread before we finished our appetizer - not sure why it took them 15 mins to "warm" the bread. (Since the bread was on every table, the bread server should just go around offering it instead of having a small note on the menu about requesting it. Makes it more obtuse than it needs to be.)"

  • "Our dinner at Frances was lovely although the front of house reception was pretty frosty and not a smile in sight - the owner maybe?? The tables are extremely close together, in fact you have to pull out the table in order for the person sitting against the wall to get out. Having said that, the food was delicious and our waiter extremely knowledgeable and friendly. A really excellent restsurant is to me the whole package, so front of house needs to live up to the rest."

  • "We loved our evening at Frances, and the bouchees/appetizers were amazing. The bacon beignets, blistered peppers, and corn soup were particularly spectacular. They do falter a bit on the entrees (as do many, many other restaurants -- why is that?!) but it didn't spoil our experience."

  • "This was my first visit to Frances after a year or two of waiting and many attempted reservations. Like a lot of new restaurants, many promised a transcendent experience but only delivering odd combinations that sounded good but were more like experiments. Frances was surprisingly different, as you could taste the consideration and thought going into most of the dishes. Every ingredient appeared to have it's place and purpose in the dish. The deft handling of the meat was admirable and only comes from experience. We had both the bavette steak and squab and both were memorable for the perfect cooking and succulence. All other dishes from the calamari, beignets, sides, pasta were excellent, sometimes too salty (pasta) but all memorable."
    Dined on 6/23/2014
  • "The squab was great - perfectly cooked with a lot of distinct flavors. My husband's steak on-the-hand, was chewy and hard to cut mainly because it was so under cooked. The waiter said the chef recommends med. rare, but my husband asked for it more toward the med. range. However, it was practically raw. Can't remember what type of purée it was sitting on, but the texture was like paste. Could be the effect of pouring the jus over the steak. Other reviewers loved this dish, but in my mind, it needs several adjustments. Waiter was nice and friendly, but never asked if we wanted a second glass of wine or if we were satisfied with the food - so not fully attentive."

  • "Everything here was outstanding. The bacon beignets were terrific. Loganberry cake with toasted almond ice cream stole the show though. Highly recommend."

  • "Try everything on the menu! We shared almost everything in appetizers and small bites on the menu. The service was outstanding. Great experience."

  • "This was our 2nd dinner at Frances. This time we grazed through half a dozen small plates, plus a shared dessert. The food and drink were perfect. The service started out well, but fell apart mid-way through the meal. We had to flag down a waiter to get a 2nd glass of wine. Then a busser took away our empty bottle of water but neglected to replace it. It took a while to get a refill. But on the whole our dinner was lovely and we'll definitely go back."

  • "All I can say is that this place is spot on. We had a selection of bouchées and then mains and sides and all were great, along with buying house wine by the oz. Great service"

  • "We've been here 3 times. The food at Frances is almost exceptional - the only criticism is they use a bit too much salt. The wine on tap is excellent."

  • "Obtaining a reservation after 5:30 pm is a challenge but after seated there is no rush. We were there for 90 minutes before the entree was served! Starters delicious. Entree meat was undercooked even after sending it back and too rich. Dessert mediocre. Don't order the beef and though we were met very graciously and initial attention, we were disappointed overall."

  • "We were sorely disappointed in the service, which affected our enjoyment of the evening. Our server, a man w/ balding hair, was terrible at his job. Our bread came AFTER our 1st appetizer, only after we asked *another* server to bring us our bread, at which point he gave us plates but no bread for probably another 10 minutes. When it came, it was cold. Our server doted on the 4 top table next to us however, probably bc they ordered a bottle of wine. Their bread came right after ours, even though we arrived and ordered much earlier than they did. We grabbed another piece when their bread came, and it was warm, the way bread should be. We also had to have another server fill our water, box our food, and grab our check. The steak was chewy."

  • "Bring your favorite friend to Frances, order and share lots of things, lose track of time The staff are great, the menu is second to nothing, the pace with which the kitchen sends the dishes works perfectly."

  • "Second time was as great as the first! Amazing dishes - even chicken which I rarely order was one of the best entrees we have had anywhere."

  • "Francis has phenomenal, unique food and terrific service. Very possibly the best restaurant in San Francisco. The small plates and deserts are particular highlights - highly creative and perfectly balanced flavors. I would recommend this place to anyone."

  • "I'm a native Bay guy, over 50, so I've seen it all basically. I love Frances because it's in the hood, low key and the food is non-stop fantastic. So many of my favorite restaurants have closed (Fire Cracker, 2223 Market), it's nice to find a new special place I can count on that isn't mobbed with hipsters or trying to have a "scene". "

  • "My wife and I went there to celebrate her birthday. We had a wonderful time. The applewood beignets are not to be missed. My wife had the bavette steak and I had the chicken roulade - delicious. As for wine, they have very good house red and white that is blended for them."
