Diner Reviews
  • "We came to The Fourth Estate courtesy of a "Capitol Deal" offer, still wary about "deals" and were pleasantly surprised. The service was excellent, friendly yet professional, and the food superb. The Fourth Estate served the best crab cakes I have ever had in a restaurant. The deserts simple and elegant. We'll return."

  • "Excellent food! We loved everything we ordered. This is a great place for conversation too. The service was not so friendly and polite. It's still worth dining at this place, just for the food and ease of conversation."

  • "Great menu except for dessert! We were so disappointed at our options on the restaurant week dessert menu that we just had sorbet and went over to the Hamilton for dessert."

  • "Despite overlooking an atrium in the National Press Building, the service and food at the Fourth Estate more than made up for it. Engaging and helpful wait staff, spectacular food and not overly loud. The chilled cantaloupe and blueberry soup was a perfect start for a hot humid Washington day. the crab cakes were made with no fill so solid crab meat, lightly browned and absolutely delicious. I and my guests had a wonderful relaxing lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the food."

  • "chef is great, restaurant is great, service is great.... and in a historic location.....the press club it's in a good location right accross from the willard, but you have to go through the press building and elevator so it doesn't get a lot of foot traffic...... a real find......."

  • "This is a great restaurant to take your significant other. You are sure to have his/her undivided attention. The atmosphere was very nice for lunch but I can only imagine what it would be like in the evening hours. From the Hostess to the young man cleaning the table, everyone was very nice and pleasant. I'll go back soon!"

  • "Table for four. One was gluten free guest. Limited but excellent menu. Crab cake, steak and salmon were all cooked to perfection. Service was attentive but not obsequious. Great time had by all. We'll be back."

  • "What an all around experience! Outstanding service, food and ambiance."

  • "This place is really good, but it seems that a lot of people don't know about it. The wait staff actually remembered us and recalled how much we loved the crab cakes. The chef came to our table to greet us, and asked whether the meal was to our liking. You don't get this level of service at many restaurants. As for the food, it's great! This time I had lamb chops and my husband had his favorite crab cakes. The lamb chops were really good and nicely seasoned. They were served with a type of sauce/gravy which was OK, but I think they would have been fine on their own. The crab cakes were awesome, as usual. Please give this place a try. You won't be sorry."

  • "Came for dinner with our two 14 year old daughters and had a wonderful time. Service and food were excellent and even though there were no windows to the outside, being at the Press Club lent its own charm."

  • "My daughter and I had a most enjoyable evening at Fourth Estate. Everyone on staff was professional as well as personable and the food was outstanding. Kate had their famous crab cakes and I had a steak - both perfection. The wine list, although limited was well chosen and most acceptable for most tastes - not to mention well priced. We were treated as though we were members and the next time I'm in D.C. I will definitely dine at Fourth Estate."

  • "This place has good food, good decor, and good service. While they are not perfect, we were very happy. I'd give them 4.5 stars. We had a table of 8 people for Saturday night dinner. We found them on open table, then found a deal on travel zoo. The restaurant was only 25% full. They had a mixup with our reservation and gave our requested table to a different party. However, they apologized and made it up to us. We had crab cakes, steak, cod, and chicken. There were also salads, bottles of wine, and desserts (flan, mouse, ice cream, rhubarb tart). The only mediocre food was the 2 steaks that were overcooked. We sent one steak back and received an excellent replacement."

  • "Unique dining experience, where VIP's and all the rest of us combine, with history, value, and wonderful food. My wife and I just had dinner there with 6 friends including a national radio show host; all loved it. As a member of the Club's House Committee, I see the comments each month, and 99% are totally positive. We ate in the cubicle staring at wall-size photos of Eleanor Roosevelt and her friends in formal get-up with amazing hats. The rest of the restaurant and the Club's halls have photos of Presidents and VIP's. Great place to bring friends and family. It's on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building, 14th and F. Just take the elevator to 13. You feel like you are in an exclusive venue--you are, and it's open to the public."

  • "Went here with my wife to celebrate selling our condo. Being in the National Press Club gave this restaurant a very classy vibe. Our waiter was extremely friendly and very knowledgable of the menu. We both had the crab cakes which were delicious. The blueberry cobbler was very tasty, not too sweet or heavy on the crust. Overall, we had a great experience and would highly recommend dining here."

  • "The food was terrible. Went for lunch. Impressive venue but virtually empty. We ordered the cantaloupe soup and there was every flavor but cantaloupe. The flavor that it did have was a muddy mess. The salmon was tasteless as if it were frozen for a long, long time and the sauce was broken and runny. However, the wait staff was attentive and professional."

  • "Go for the history, the crabcakes and the spicy pineapple granita. Very quiet spot with good service but lacking on menu options. Steaks were ok but they subbed out a side item without mentioning it during ordering. Manager gave us free dessert but then the ice cream had freezer burn. Crabcakes were good although pricey. If you like spicy foods, try the spicy pineapple granita for dessert - delicious."

  • "Good food, good service, chef came out to meet us. It's an unusual place to eat because it's basically the National Press Club. The photos in the building are great. It's a good out of the ordinary experience with a nice staff"

  • "We went to celebrate a high school graduation, and got a round table tucked into the corner, one might call the Roosevelt table for the great pictures on the wall of Eleanor Roosevelt. The service was friendly, flexible and attentive. I couldn't believe my mom cleared her plate, she loved the Chicken Breast stuffed w/ goat cheese. My son and I got the fresh ravioli with (crmini?) mushrooms and peas and asapargus. Even picky eaters would eat these vegetables. I saved room for desert, and liked the variety. The chocolate flan seemed interesting so we tried it. It wasn't "flan-y" but it was good. Then the teas looked so interesting we couldn't resist the freshly pressed loose tea. I'd like to come back and try the other amazing teas!"

  • "This worked to be a nice place to have lunch just before seeing a show at the National Theatre. I found out on Saturdays at noon the only have the brunch menu, not the lunch menu. The brunch menu is limited. One person the Eggs Benedict with crab and loved it. The crab cake was good as well but I have had better. The service was slow and we had to remind our server to bring the salad even though only 4 tables were seated. Overall, the food and drinks were a nice way to have a good experience before the show. "

  • "Five of us gathered from around the country to share news and family updates. The service was excellent - very well-paced, attentive and cordial but never intrusive or pushy - starting from seating our group at a table in an alcove for a sense of privacy while still seeing out the windows onto the DC skyline. The food was excellent although since we share personal favorites we only sampled a few dishes (superb crab cakes, excellent burger). The quiet elegance (we went on an "off-day", unlike a Press Club day) the ambiance was one of relaxed elegance and quiet suited to private conversation. Delightful and perfect for the occasion. Pricing was certainly fair for the quality of the food and experience. "

  • "A friend of mine and I go out to lunch/dinner frequently in DC and had never heard of the Fourth Estate Restaurant at the National Press Club. We met for lunch on June 6. The service was attentive and impeccable, at a pace that allowed us to catch up with each other. We had the zucchini quesadillas at the waiters recommendation. The filling was flavorful and the tortilla was crispy-a nice start to the meal. My friend had the grilled lobster and gruyere sandwich and I had the cod over couscous. I'm from New England and very seldom find fresh cod cooked right in the DC metro area. This was cooked perfectly, fresh with perfectly sized portions. Impressive find. "

  • "As a member of the NPC I have seen the restaurant space evolve over 50 plus years. Once offices and a lounge is now completely reborn as a sophisticated fine restaurant. Entrance through the club presents an avenue of historic photographs. Classic dining experience."

  • "Wonderful experience in a historical venue. Very enjoyable."

  • "This is a terrific restaurant in a very historic place. The fact that nonmembers are now welcome provides another opportunity for the club to thrive and non members to experience this secret."

  • "Too often people think of the Fourth Estate as a members only club. Its not. It is open to the public. Actually, that's good news as the dining room doesn't get crowded or noisy. The service is terrific and the food is very good. The crab cakes are terrific. And, lobster night is the last Wednesday of every month. I recommend that you budget a little extra time to take in all that the National Press Club has to offer in the way of walls chock full of photos of media personalities. Fun, fun, fun."

  • "This is a awesome restaurant to have great food and a business or social meeting. The seating can accommodate groups or a table for two. The food can range from lobster to a hamburger The staff is professional and experienced from reception to the server. The Catena Malbec was smooth, the bread came with butter and pate, made for a smooth transition to best hamburger ever!"

  • "Service was outstanding, very attentive but also unobtrusive, waiter made good recommendations. We said we were sharing starters and, without us asking, the pear salad came out divided onto two plates, very thoughtful. An interesting and historic place, lots of photos to look at, good food, quiet and relaxing, great for out of town guests. Also perfect for dinner before a show at Warner or National Theatre."

  • "Had the groupon deal for 2 glasses of wine, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts. We had the crab cakes and cod which were excellent. Also had the spinach salad and herb salad, also very good. The mango crisp was amazing. The toffee pudding was ok (more like a bread pudding), but based on others around me I should have gone with the rice pudding instead. Besides the food, the history of the place was interesting. Lots of pictures on the walls of need events and famous people. It's one of the fanciest places I've been to in DC."

  • "Restaurant apparently offers many "specials." My was a $95 coupon, supposedly worth $195, for 4 dinners. My coupon said this included 4 appetizers, 4 entrees, and 4 glasses of wine. After surrendering coupon to waiter he insisted the coupon could only have included 4 desserts, not 4 appetizers; he was wrong, but would not relent. Somewhat silly, since the appetizer prizes were only a few dollars more than the desserts. It did add to our bottom line since our party did order, and pay extra for, 4 appetizers and mostly left barely touched 3 desserts. Not a bad experience, but not worth the effort"

  • "So rare to find a restaurant without the usual DC noise level. Food was a disappointment. Bland veal, undistinguished brown gravy/sauce on top. Crab cake - recommended by the waiter was unimpressive, as was bread and too sweet chocolate tart for dessert. "
