The food was good, the ambiance lively with lots going on, but the front desk was not very welcoming. Guests were questioned closely and then sent to the wrong place (one ended up in the kitchen) or left to linger. Guests may not know there are "members" and "public" restaurants, only that they have been invited by someone who has a reservation. It seems to me that the front desk should know who has a reservation where, and direct people accordingly. What would otherwise have been a lovely meal at a historic place was thus marred. I am thinking twice about going back.

Most of the reviews I read before dining at the Fourth Estate were very positive and definitive and our experience mirrored all the good ones. Everything was perfect. While the menu is limited, there is enough variety to fit all tastes. The meal and wine prices were in line and the value for that price was absolutely in line. Every dish was very well prepared and extremely tasty. Our waiter Cecilio was exceptional, very professional, personable and always available but never pressing. The big thing that was mentioned in many reviews was that the restaurant was not crowded resulting in a quietness that was very conducive to conversations with your dining companions. We greatly appreciated this aspect; and the ambiance and décor are very soothing and relaxing. We will return and recommend it highly. The walls leading to the restaurant with all the pictures return many memories. All in all, an extremely enjoyable evening for us. Bob G

The visit at the Fourth Estate Restaurant was outstanding. From the moment I walked in, my group was greeted and welcomed. Our waiter was excellent. He was very thorough and I wish I had taken his advice on the crabcakes. I had the NY steak which was cooked to perfection. My wife had the crabcakes and she let me sample. They were the best crabcakes I have had during my visit to the Maryland/D.C. area.

Surrounded by historic mementos, we enjoyed a quiet birthday dinner. Service, menu and ambiance did not disappoint. Fried oyster starter presented at best 3 and 1/2 very small oysters - a little disappointing. Second bread serving substituted dinner rolls because there was no more french bread! Overall a very good menu selection. Considering location, tradition and ambiance, I would definitely give them a 2nd chance to improve on the minor irritants. And I would recommend the restaurant to anyone for a special occasion.

The service was excellent with waiters there to give suggestions, make sure you were satisfied and meet every need without being intrusive. The crab cakes were the best we've ever had and the raspberry/chocolate mousse was to die for! We will be returning to this restaurant!!

Place was nice. Kind of "old-fashioned formal". Service was good (not great, but good). Food not so great. Not really bad, but not worth going back for. Very limited choices of appetizers/sides. Desserts good. Wines good. Would have been overpriced had we not gone with a discount "deal". The place was almost empty, on a Saturday night, but since it's in the National Press Club building I guess they do more "daytime" and ballroom/conference business. Even in an almost empty house, they still managed to overcook one of the entrees (sent it back - it came out right the second time). The wine pairings were very good, as was dessert. I've seen many favorable reviews, mostly for daytime visits, so maybe better if you go for lunch/brunch.

We selected this place in visiting DC as it said it was quiet and the food was good. It was all of that. Very much enjoyed looking at all of the great Pulitzer Prize Photos and press history. The duck breast was outstanding, the filet and salmon were as well according to the other guests. Would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a special occasion dinner where you want to be able to have some conversation that doesn't require shouting.

We took advantage of a Travelzoo deal to finally try this restaurant for brunch (they are open for dinner only until 9:00pm, which we find a bit too short). The crab cake was delicious, and so was the chocolate/raspberry mousse for dessert. However, although we enjoyed the food and found the gallery of photos entertaining, the ambiance is too much "Congress-esque" and serious for our tastes (which makes the perfect place for an important meeting). We enjoyed the food, but we are not sure we would return, living in Washington DC and having so many restaurants to choose from...

We had an excellent dinner with friends from Massachusetts and were all very impressed. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was quiet and elegant. The quiet suited us well since we had a lot of catching up to do. The host and our server were attentive to detail and even took the time to tell us some interesting history about the restaurant. We loved being able to walk the halls later and see the pictures of all the famous people who have visited the National Press Club. Since The Fourth Estate is right in the center of DC, I would recommend it to any locals or tourists. If I lived there, it would be a frequent place for me to dine.

This would go on one of the best kept secrets list- we just got to hear of it and went in for a late dinner Saturday night on a conference trip to DC. Being history buffs we were captivated by the framed photos on the walls- so like museum exhibits telling stories -the news photographs were compelling too. The food was one of the finest in the city- the asparagus chicken was delicious- as was my melt in the mouth veggie and cheese enchilada. We shared a chocolate/vanilla ice cream in a tapered margarita glass with a basil mint garnish. This is a quiet place made for friendly intimacy and good conversation - an experience we truly enjoyed!

We were a group of four needing a pleasant spot for discussion over lunch. Our luncheon lasted 2 1/2 hours. Setting was quiet. Service and food were superb. Chef visited our table midway through the experience. We had almost no business papers on display. I had a small notebook to take notes. Fourth Estate was a better choice in the NPC than the less expensive Reliable Source which can be crowded and noisy. Everyone was happy about food, service and setting.

Despite overlooking an atrium in the National Press Building, the service and food at the Fourth Estate more than made up for it. Engaging and helpful wait staff, spectacular food and not overly loud. The chilled cantaloupe and blueberry soup was a perfect start for a hot humid Washington day. the crab cakes were made with no fill so solid crab meat, lightly browned and absolutely delicious. I and my guests had a wonderful relaxing lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the food.

This place is really good, but it seems that a lot of people don't know about it. The wait staff actually remembered us and recalled how much we loved the crab cakes. The chef came to our table to greet us, and asked whether the meal was to our liking. You don't get this level of service at many restaurants. As for the food, it's great! This time I had lamb chops and my husband had his favorite crab cakes. The lamb chops were really good and nicely seasoned. They were served with a type of sauce/gravy which was OK, but I think they would have been fine on their own. The crab cakes were awesome, as usual. Please give this place a try. You won't be sorry.

This place has good food, good decor, and good service. While they are not perfect, we were very happy. I'd give them 4.5 stars. We had a table of 8 people for Saturday night dinner. We found them on open table, then found a deal on travel zoo. The restaurant was only 25% full. They had a mixup with our reservation and gave our requested table to a different party. However, they apologized and made it up to us. We had crab cakes, steak, cod, and chicken. There were also salads, bottles of wine, and desserts (flan, mouse, ice cream, rhubarb tart). The only mediocre food was the 2 steaks that were overcooked. We sent one steak back and received an excellent replacement.

Unique dining experience, where VIP's and all the rest of us combine, with history, value, and wonderful food. My wife and I just had dinner there with 6 friends including a national radio show host; all loved it. As a member of the Club's House Committee, I see the comments each month, and 99% are totally positive. We ate in the cubicle staring at wall-size photos of Eleanor Roosevelt and her friends in formal get-up with amazing hats. The rest of the restaurant and the Club's halls have photos of Presidents and VIP's. Great place to bring friends and family. It's on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building, 14th and F. Just take the elevator to 13. You feel like you are in an exclusive venue--you are, and it's open to the public.

The food was terrible. Went for lunch. Impressive venue but virtually empty. We ordered the cantaloupe soup and there was every flavor but cantaloupe. The flavor that it did have was a muddy mess. The salmon was tasteless as if it were frozen for a long, long time and the sauce was broken and runny. However, the wait staff was attentive and professional.

Go for the history, the crabcakes and the spicy pineapple granita. Very quiet spot with good service but lacking on menu options. Steaks were ok but they subbed out a side item without mentioning it during ordering. Manager gave us free dessert but then the ice cream had freezer burn. Crabcakes were good although pricey. If you like spicy foods, try the spicy pineapple granita for dessert - delicious.
