Diner Reviews
  • "Opted out of my suburban diner comfort zone w a surprise dinner & theatre in DC to celebrate birthdays for my wife & best friends. Theatre choice was easy- a Beatles tribute band playing at the excellent Warner Theatre, just a block away. After reviews, the decision was simple. The noise factor wd be plenty later, so an ambiance contributing to conversation & a reputation for consistency made the Fourth Estate the right match. Fixed menu option assured nice choices- appetizer thru entree to dessert. Three of four orders for crab cakes- all crab, no filler. Med rare on the steak, the chef was spot on. ...& the photographic halls of history, a nice plus! With dining so fine, it was assumed the surprise complete. ...But on to the Band!"

  • "We were seeing a play at the nearby National Theater, so we made reservations at the National Press Club, just for the history of it. We couldn't have picked a better place. The restaurant is on the 13th floor, and when you get off the elevator you have to work your way through a bit of a mildly confusing maze to get to the restaurant. But trust me, you'll find it. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the food was spectacular -- all four of us raved about our dishes. We notified the restaurant in advance that we were using a TravelZoo coupon, which they accommodated with no noticeable deterioration in quality of food or service, and they even made great recommendations. We'll definitely be back!"

  • "It was a very class and unique setting to have lunch. We looked at pictures of those who spoke at the National Press Club through the years. We then had a delicious American Bistro style lunch which was well prepared and more than adequate in portion size. The chef also greeted us which made us feel welcomed and special. The service was well timed and friendly. It's a great place to go and get out of the hustle and bustle of the city."

  • "The food was great, setting was private, quiet and classy. Our waiter was superb. I took my friend there for his first time for his birthday dinner and he was MOST impressed! We'll be back! (Not exactly a "scenic" view, but the wall art of the National Press Club is fascinating!)"

  • "This place is totally worth the difficulty you may have finding it. The lobster bisque was really delicious and I regretted ordering a cup instead of a bowl. The mixed greens salad also was very good. My strip steak was a perfect medium rare. My husband, who loves crab cakes and can be very picky about them, could'nt stop praising the ones here. They were a good size and had very little filler. The service also was outstanding. The only "complaint" I have is that it's a bit of a walk to the restrooms. However, you'll pass very interesting photos of reporters and news events. Given the food and the service, I've already scheduled my next meal here. If you've never been, you must go!"

  • "A lovely dinner experience made so by excellent service, a very nice setting and a room where you can hear your fellow diners. Attentive without being obtrusive, how nice is that!"

  • "The delicious crabcakes were all lump meat with nobread fillers. They were very tasty and a great size also. You get 2 for a very reasonable and affordable price. The best in the NW dowtown area."

  • "The restaurant is quiet. We had a prime table in a corner, so our conversation with our guest could be heard without being loud. The house wine was perfectly fine. One steak dish was not to the taste of one of our group, but the crab cakes, the duck breast and the other entrees were very nicely done. We had been there three times, as visitors from Hawaii. The chef took the trouble to greet us. That was very nice. I like her cooking and menu."

  • "We were not quite sure what to expect., however, our birthday celebration at the Fourth Estate Restaurant was wonderful. The reservation process was excellent! They were very accomodating with our late arrival due to my husband and I coming from one direction and my cousin and her husband coming from a different direction. The food was also very very good; as a group we had the Seared Ocean Cod, Chimichurri stuffed Chicken Breast, and Grilled New York Strip Steaks. The steaks were tender and cooked just as ordered and the Chicken was very flavorful as was the Cod. Our waiter Basisami (forgive my spelling error) was attentive and delivered everything right on cue. Loved having my water glass full at all times! Overall, an excellent dinner"

  • "I took my brother and his girlfriend here when they came to visit this summer. My brother is a big news junkie so the ambiance was spot on for him. It was nice and quiet so we could enjoy our conversation and wine. The service was a touch above average, the food was well prepared yet un-inspired. The crab cakes had just the right amount of filler to meat ratio. This is a perfect place for meeting clients for lunch or taking out of town guests."

  • "The deal with the Groupon should not limit the experience. There is no deal if the portion sizes are less and the service is abreviated."

  • "Such a special place, Along the hallways you can see pictures of people who made history by reporting it - just looking at their faces brings back memories of the times. The 5th Estate food and service are grand, but it's being allowed to experience the aura of this private club that makes it so special. Is there anyone in America who has not heard of the National Press Club? Non members only have access through this elegant, open to all restaurant - and if you have out-of-town guests - this should be a must on your dinner "tour" list!!."

  • "I recommend eating at the Fourth Estate when you need to host a client for lunch. It is quiet, good food and a professional setting."

  • "The Fourth Estate is almost hidden in the National Press Building. We saw the sign for it when we entered, but had to ask the security guard how to get to it. If there were signs directing one to the restaurant, we didn't see them. The staff was great; very welcoming and professional. We both asked the waiter for a recommendation between two different entrees; his suggestions were great. We were in and out in less than 90 minutes, although we didn't feel rushed. I had the lobster and butternut squash risotto, which was very tasty. The squash could have been cooked a little longer, but it was good. We were both surprised by the chocolate ice cream that topped the pear and mango crisp; vanilla would have been a better choice."

  • "We really enjoyed our Valentines Day dinner. Our only disappointment was that our table was far too close to the busing station which was a bit distracting."

  • "The food wasn't great, and the service was ok. The place seems to be a hotspot for older socialite types, and the food tastes like its meant for older taste-buds."

  • "Hi. I visited the Fourth Estate at the National Press Club in DC on Friday, 14Feb2014. Due to a huge snowstorm, I was stranded in DC until Saturday. As a result, I was able to tour DC. This was one of my best finds. It's a quaint restaurant located on the 13th floor of the National Press Club Building on 14th St. The restaurant was quiet and had a very nice ambience. For Valentine's Day, they offered a prix fixe menu with four appetizer choices, four entrée, choices, and four dessert choices. Also, they offered each person a glass of either prosecco or bellini. The wait staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and the history of the press club. Great restaurant - I would highly recommend. it!"

  • "I think this is a downtown gem. I signed for one of those voucher deals and end up at this restaurant. I am glad I did. Other way around it would be impossible for me to find this restaurant. The food is incredible. The drinks are moderately priced. Overall pricing of the menu for the overall value received is outstanding. And most importantly, it is a quite atmosphere. I highly recommend it."

  • "Enjoyed hearing young performers from the Blues Alley-affiliated jazz group which plays there periodically. Chef was very engaged, circulated in the room to converse about the food experience and had substantive interaction on her cuisine approaches. Food was excellent, wine choice was good, but I mark them down a star on service because of ineptitude between the serving staff and the club's reception desk about how parking validation is supposed to work... got bounced back and forth between the waiter, the reception desk and back to the restaurant. Finally one of the assisting servers (not our waiter) was able to take the garage slip back into the kitchen and after five minutes reappeared with the decal stamp that provided free parking."

  • "Tucked away several floors up and well worth the trip. Exceptional service, wonderful food, personal attention and the unique experience of sitting at tables shared by world figures and dignitaries, past and present. It's the Washington Press Club dining room - an experience of cuisine and history combined. Highly recommended on both fronts."

  • "This was a perfect spot to go to for dinner before going to a show at The National Theater. The host was pleasant and chummy, providing us with great stories about the NPC before our meal was served. If we weren't pressed for time, we would have gone at d the entire restaurant to look at all the pictures. The atmosphere was just perfect - casual enough to not feel stuffy, but elegant enough to feel like a special night out. The food was very good, the wait staff was tremendous, and we all had a great experience. This was great for both young and old adults, and we had a great experience! We highly recommend it!"

  • "Besides good food, you have a wonderful opportunity to people watch at the 4th Estate. Like the Old Ebbitt Grill - the 4th Estate comes with its own history - an amazing one at that for Washington, DC. Everybody who is anybody has eaten and/or spoken there and the walls are lined with pictures of people we all recognize. The Chef has been there for several years and is exceptionally talented - the food always pleasing - but for me - the adventure is in whether or not I recognize him or her at a nearby table!!"

  • "I loved the atmosphere, especially being in such a historical restaurant. I was surprised to see all the journalists photos, some I had actually forgotten. Let me say, I think the service was great and the china was absolutely beautiful."

  • "It's a scenic view - because you're inside the National Press Club and you get to see all the amazing photographs they have on the walls. I went with my sister and we had a fantastic time - the meal was excellent. We both had the steaks and they were cooked to perfection. The decore is a bit old-timey but it's part of the Press Club. But the food was just lovely and we met the chef!"

  • "Have dined at Fourth Estate previously and had delicious jumbo lump crab cakes. This time there was very little lump crab in the crab cakes. I had recommended them to a dining partner from Annapolis where crab cakes are king, and I was very disappointed in the quality of the crab cakes we received. Don't know what happened, but they need to bring the lump crab cakes back. The rest of the food was outstanding. Two people got the sirloin steak, and it was outstanding. The salads before our entrees were extremely delicious, and the service was outstanding. I highly recommend Fourth Estate for dinner, just avoid the crab cakes."

  • "We'd love to take our visitors here now that we found this gem. Very DC with great photos of Press Club visiting celebs and politicians. Great for people who like well made classic food. I had pear salad with goat cheese and candied walnuts, nicely dressed...not too much dressing as to drown the flavors. My main was steak cooked exactly as I asked and with a nice crust. A delightful surprise side was small sweet peppers stuffed with goat cheese. The other side were terrific fat fries...crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside. Hubby had African peanut sweet potato soup-smooth, tasty. Rack of lamb perfectly cooked with a delicious white bean ragu. The chef came out to chat and mentioned the menu changes every couple of months, seasonally."

  • "I wouldn't have found Fourth Estate without the internet. Tucked up on the 13th floor of the National Press Club building, not something to stumble on. Getting there, apart from DC traffic, was painless. Nice building, friendly doorman. The restaurant itself was pretty small, and elegant. Host provide my data and I two complimentary glass of sparkling wine, and the wait staff was attentive all night. My date had the crab cakes and really enjoy them. I ate from their prix fix menu (I think always available and a good deal for a nice dinner downtown). My salad was outstanding, the short rib were good but nothing to write home about, and desert was tasty but not mind blowing. Beautiful location, great service, and good food for the price."

  • "The Fourth Estate Restaurant is small, quiet and intimate. The service is top notch. It's nice to be able to eat out and not have to try to talk over the noise in the restaurant. It's a nice little get-a-way when you want an intimate, quiet dinning experience with great service. The crab cakes are very nice as well as the pear salad and the spinach salad."

  • "Full disclosure: I am a National Press Club member, but I don't believe that clouds my opinion here. The ambiance is perfect for those who desire the D.C. power player experience and want a fine meal. The service is attentive, but low key. The food is excellent. At member prices it is a wonderful dinner bargain and even for the public, the prices are more than reasonable for the quality of the food and service."
