A word from Four Square Restaurant
Four Square is located in the Bartlett Mangum House, a restored 1908 Victorian home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Outside, massive Doric columns flank the entrance. A wraparound porch, second floor balcony, and slate roof capped by iron scrollwork complete the picture. Inside, the intimate dining rooms each have their original coal burning fireplaces with tiled, carved wood and mirrored mantelpieces. Leaded and stained glass windows and beautiful woodwork can be found throughout.

Our menu changes bi-monthly to reflect our commitment to bringing diners the freshest and most seasonal products available. We rely on local famers and purveyors to bring us the region’s best, from vegetables and grains to seafood and meats. We have a passion for food at Four Square, and we hope you sense it when you dine with us.

Four Square has been one of our favorite restaurants since they opened in 1999. My wife and I went this time for her birthday. The food was great - interesting, unexpected, and delicious - the service was all you could ask for - and the wine (a Chehalem Stoller Pinot from 2011) a perfect pairing for the duck we had as a main course. I can recommend the chacuterie plate, highly recommend the duck (confit and duck breast with a wonderful potato croquette), and the peppermint ice cream with devils food cake was excellent. Lovely meal, lovely place. We'll be back - very highly recommended as one of Durham's best.

When we arrived our waiter - Seth asked if we wanted to try an Asian themed dinner. WE agreed and then had the most delicious five course meal. Apparently Shane (the chef) enjoys doing these sorts of things - mixing up the menu a bit taking what is already there but making combinations with a particular theme - our options were french or Asian. It was a fabulous evening.

While my entree was excellent, my wife's was just so-so. The menu on this night at least leaned almost exclusively to game and seafood (we're a long way from the coast). Nevertheless, our server was outstanding, and the setting was special.

Food was okay - while the monkfish appetizer was great, the entree (tuna steak with Asian mushrooms) was okay. While the tuna was cooked as asked, the sauce had no flavor at all and there were very few mushrooms. The bison flank steak - some pieces were overcooked (which was still palatable) and others were tough (unpalatable). Desserts were best part of dinner - blood orange sorbet was awesome and jalapeno ice cream was good (although grapefruit does not go with jalapenos). Because rooms are small, a loud table is distracting - we sat next to a table with 2 parents who were constantly telling their kids to be quiet. The food and experience has been much better in the past. It was probably just an off night.

We visited Four Square last week for the first time. We drove about 100 miles to attend a concert at DPAC and checked opentable to find a good restaurant nearby. What a find! The staff is professional yet friendly. Everything that you could want from servers. We arrived 30 minutes before our reservation, but also 30 minutes before they started serving dinner. They were very polite, helpful, friendly,... Also, best duck we've had in NC! Everything was excellent. Too bad it's a 100 mile drive, but next time we're in Durham we'll be there.

The restaurant is in an early 20th century home with an interesting past (read about in the wine list jacket.) We ate on the screened porch, but the inside is lovely as well. The service was very pleasant and friendly and the food was modern and inventive. We had thoroughly enjoyable meal.

Me and my wife celebrated our 4 year Wedding Anniversary at Four Square. As usual the food and service were top notch. Seth Lange offered many great suggestions and helped create a special night for us. The entire crew at Four Square was on point and the timing of the meal was perfect. If you are looking for a great date night spot this is it.

The food at Four Square was fantastic. I was really impressed with the marrow (although I'd skip the monkfish appetizer). While the atmosphere was a bit stuffy, it wasn't unexpected. The service was top-notch, and I will be returning. I initially didn't think this would be a good place for groups, but they were able to set up a separate table from the main dining room, which allowed our group to be a bit louder than the rest of the restaurant.

I had heard of this restaurant awhile ago, on a list of Durham place we should really go. My husband and I finally decided to go, for our wedding anniversary. We can't wait to go back! We were given the choice of indoor or outdoor seating, with the outdoor being a screend in porch. The lighting was dim and romantic. Our server showed up immediately and was friendly and helpful. I had a question about the menu and she was able to answer it and offered me options. My husband had lamb shank - a huge portion which he truly enjoyed. I had Rabbit Salisbury Steak - just wonderful. A lovely combination of flavors to make one delicious meal. Dessert - we had 3 of them. All divine. We'll be back and so will our friends!

My friend ahd the bison flank and I the duck. We have both eaten better elsewhere. Granted there is an attempt to combine interesting ingredients but the sauce on the duck covered all flavor although the duck was well cooked. The flank steak was bland at best but the vegetables were tasty. Even the luscious looking blueberries in the dessert of vanilla creme lacked flavor. We had eaten here before and figured why not try to see if it got better...it didn't. Keep in mind that food is a matter of taste (no pun intended) but for what this restaurant charges we do not feel it is worth another try. It should be mentioned the service was quite good but be prepared for several servers.

All aspects of the experience were wonderful. The appetizers and entrees were simply superb. The lamb belly and salted cod potato cakes were especially satisfying as was the quail. Presentation, service, description offered by our waiter were all several "cuts above" the rest. I would highly recommend this establishment. While certainly very good, dessert was not quite on par with the appetizers or entrees.

In a large turn of the century farm/estate house, Four Square is divided internally into multiple small rooms that give an intimate feel, and comfortable noise levels so that it is easy to have a dinner conversation. It also has a private screened porch for outdoor dining when the weather is right - often true evenings in Durham. The menu is varied, not overly large, and varies from season to season. The wine list is excellent with a wide range of choices and prices. The chef's touch is wondrously creative and every dish is to be savored. His menu items are prepared at the level of the very top tier of restaurants in Durham, a known "foodie" city.

The menu is a treat to read - each item is a creative preparation of fresh, locally-grown, fresh food. It's like the chef went to the farmer's market and turned the ingredients on their heads - butter-bean gravy with blackberry chicken, peaches with fried thyme - total yum! The wait staff was perfect; they even shared a recipe upon request. The screened side porch is perfect for a summer evening. There is nothing that isn't perfect about Four Square.

Fine dining, ambiance and service was what we experienced the evening of our 47th wedding anniversary on August 5. We arrived a little early to enjoy a celebratory cocktail at the bar made to our own recipe. The dinner menu was enticing and we went for new, different, something I couldn't prepare at home. The crispy corned lamb belly as a starter was superb and my husband enjoyed the sweet soy octopus. We both were blown away by the crispy smoked quail and remarked on the artful presentation of all the dishes. We complemented the dinner with a very fine Zinfandel that bloomed steadily through the evening. Dessert continued the adventure with Agave-yogurt mousse and jalapeno ice cream. Our server was professional and a delight.
