  • Private Party Facilities: Four Square is unique in the Triangle area in its ability to offer flexible private dining areas for groups of varying sizes. Our smallest private room seats 8 to 10 guests at a large round table, perfect for board meetings or small family gatherings. Parties of 12 to 24 can be accomodated in each of our two mid-sized rooms, and parties of 25 to 40 may reserve our largest private room. For larger parties, the second floor can accommodate as many as 75 and the entire restaurant may be reserved for up to 125 for a seated dinner. If used as a stand-up cocktail/reception the restaurant can accommodate 200. Please call the restaurant directly to book private parties.

A word from Four Square Restaurant
Four Square is located in the Bartlett Mangum House, a restored 1908 Victorian home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Outside, massive Doric columns flank the entrance. A wraparound porch, second floor balcony, and slate roof capped by iron scrollwork complete the picture. Inside, the intimate dining rooms each have their original coal burning fireplaces with tiled, carved wood and mirrored mantelpieces. Leaded and stained glass windows and beautiful woodwork can be found throughout.

Our menu changes bi-monthly to reflect our commitment to bringing diners the freshest and most seasonal products available. We rely on local famers and purveyors to bring us the region’s best, from vegetables and grains to seafood and meats. We have a passion for food at Four Square, and we hope you sense it when you dine with us.

Presentation, service, description offered by our waiter were all several "cuts above" the rest. I would highly recommend this establishment. While certainly very good, dessert was not quite on par with the appetizers or entrees."

  • "In a large turn of the century farm/estate house, Four Square is divided internally into multiple small rooms that give an intimate feel, and comfortable noise levels so that it is easy to have a dinner conversation. It also has a private screened porch for outdoor dining when the weather is right - often true evenings in Durham. The menu is varied, not overly large, and varies from season to season. The wine list is excellent with a wide range of choices and prices. The chef's touch is wondrously creative and every dish is to be savored. His menu items are prepared at the level of the very top tier of restaurants in Durham, a known "foodie" city."

It's like the chef went to the farmer's market and turned the ingredients on their heads - butter-bean gravy with blackberry chicken, peaches with fried thyme - total yum! The wait staff was perfect; they even shared a recipe upon request. The screened side porch is perfect for a summer evening. There is nothing that isn't perfect about Four Square."

  • "Outstanding, innovative food accompanied by friendly, very professional service. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful night out together. The pace of service was perfect and allowed for great conversation and, yet, no sense of waiting for the next course. The waitstaff kept an eye on our plates and drinks and only moved on to the next course when we were ready. Result - a truly great evening! While it is a little expensive, Four Square remains a great value!"

  • "Fine dining, ambiance and service was what we experienced the evening of our 47th wedding anniversary on August 5. We arrived a little early to enjoy a celebratory cocktail at the bar made to our own recipe. The dinner menu was enticing and we went for new, different, something I couldn't prepare at home. The crispy corned lamb belly as a starter was superb and my husband enjoyed the sweet soy octopus. We both were blown away by the crispy smoked quail and remarked on the artful presentation of all the dishes. We complemented the dinner with a very fine Zinfandel that bloomed steadily through the evening. Dessert continued the adventure with Agave-yogurt mousse and jalapeno ice cream. Our server was professional and a delight."

The service was the standout by far. Our waiter was friendly but not too chatty, had excellent recommendations, and would ask to clear plates before doing so. He also managed to notice we were celebrating without us bringing it up and brought out free made in house ice cream. The appetizer we wanted was out for the night, but we went with his suggestion of the marlin and it was delightful. The food is definitely great. Unique and flavorful. The location is also in a historic and charming house which I found to be lovely and romantic. Overall we had an excellent meal and experience."
