A word from Four Square Restaurant
Four Square is located in the Bartlett Mangum House, a restored 1908 Victorian home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Outside, massive Doric columns flank the entrance. A wraparound porch, second floor balcony, and slate roof capped by iron scrollwork complete the picture. Inside, the intimate dining rooms each have their original coal burning fireplaces with tiled, carved wood and mirrored mantelpieces. Leaded and stained glass windows and beautiful woodwork can be found throughout.

Our menu changes bi-monthly to reflect our commitment to bringing diners the freshest and most seasonal products available. We rely on local famers and purveyors to bring us the region’s best, from vegetables and grains to seafood and meats. We have a passion for food at Four Square, and we hope you sense it when you dine with us.

Diner Reviews
  • "In a large turn of the century farm/estate house, Four Square is divided internally into multiple small rooms that give an intimate feel, and comfortable noise levels so that it is easy to have a dinner conversation. It also has a private screened porch for outdoor dining when the weather is right - often true evenings in Durham. The menu is varied, not overly large, and varies from season to season. The wine list is excellent with a wide range of choices and prices. The chef's touch is wondrously creative and every dish is to be savored. His menu items are prepared at the level of the very top tier of restaurants in Durham, a known "foodie" city."

  • "Four Square has always been one of our favorites and the latest trip was no less excellent. The blackberry chicken was perfectly cooked-moist with a crunchy skin. The crispy lamb belly starter was out of this world."

  • "Great food and neat atmosphere. Tuna and avocado soup were both amazing."

  • "The menu is a treat to read - each item is a creative preparation of fresh, locally-grown, fresh food. It's like the chef went to the farmer's market and turned the ingredients on their heads - butter-bean gravy with blackberry chicken, peaches with fried thyme - total yum! The wait staff was perfect; they even shared a recipe upon request. The screened side porch is perfect for a summer evening. There is nothing that isn't perfect about Four Square."

  • "Outstanding, innovative food accompanied by friendly, very professional service. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful night out together. The pace of service was perfect and allowed for great conversation and, yet, no sense of waiting for the next course. The waitstaff kept an eye on our plates and drinks and only moved on to the next course when we were ready. Result - a truly great evening! While it is a little expensive, Four Square remains a great value!"

  • "I really do not have a favorite when it comes to eating out. My husband and I enjoy cooking at home. But, now I must say I have a favorite restaurant. The food excellent. The waiter and staff the best. Perfect. We will go back. Enjoyed the atmosphere, really nice."

  • "Four Square was my first dining experience in Durham, and it has set the bar entirely too high. The repurposed Bartlett-Mangum House is a beautiful venue; the servers are informed and attentive; the chef and sommelier are brilliant together. When a special occasion is on the horizon, this is the place you'll want to be."

  • "Fine dining, ambiance and service was what we experienced the evening of our 47th wedding anniversary on August 5. We arrived a little early to enjoy a celebratory cocktail at the bar made to our own recipe. The dinner menu was enticing and we went for new, different, something I couldn't prepare at home. The crispy corned lamb belly as a starter was superb and my husband enjoyed the sweet soy octopus. We both were blown away by the crispy smoked quail and remarked on the artful presentation of all the dishes. We complemented the dinner with a very fine Zinfandel that bloomed steadily through the evening. Dessert continued the adventure with Agave-yogurt mousse and jalapeno ice cream. Our server was professional and a delight."

  • "This is one of the best restaurants in Durham. It is expensive but the food is incredible and well worth the price. The setting sets it apart since it is housed in an old plantation home. The waitstaff was knowledgeable and extremely pleasant. We will definitely return over and over again."

  • "Memorable evening - highlights were the beet salad, the fried green tomato, the tongue appetizer, and a delicious bottle of wine very reasonably priced. Some very interesting and enjoyable flavors. Service was excellent. The house is delightful and the atmosphere relaxing and comfortable. A fine place to go for a special occasion or an intimate dinner. We enjoyed the evening."

  • "Impecable service from the moment you walk in. Everyone seems interested in seeing that you have a good time. Innovative food choices - with excellent results. Bartender worked with our desire to try a Rose - creating a flight for our taste testing. Chef/owner came out to say hello and to be sure everything was to our satisfaction. Table was arranged so our party would be able to talk. All-in-all a great evening and memorable dinner - as always!"

  • "We met for a special occasion and were very impressed with out first ever visit here. The food was excellent, tasty and different. There was great presentation and all four of us received our food at the very same time by four servers with great flair. We all felt very special and doted upon. To visit Durham and not dine here would be a huge loss for anyone coming to the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area. I also enjoyed the porch with the swing. It reminded me of my maternal grandparents' home. Deacon Ed from Texas"

  • "Three of us had the salmon, osso bucco, and vegetables, all were excellent. Service is very personalized, wait staff highly experienced at making sure our experience was delightful. We sat on the side porch on a very pleasant evening. Special dietary needs were professionally met."

  • "While the food scene has moved to downtown Durham, those in the know still head to Four Square for the best in fine dining in a beautiful setting with a professional waitstaff."

  • "My favorite restaurant of ANY in Durham, maybe even in the Triangle. This was my second dinner. I am kind of a foodie and the food here is outstanding. Venison, fish, salads, all over the top. Service is good and friendly. So why not perfect? Last time it was the manager, this time it was the "host" who was not friendly despite my friendly overtures. What's up with that?"

  • "I took my boyfriend to Four Square for his birthday dinner and we enjoyed it all. Neither of us are big drinkers, but the wine list was extensive and impressive. The service was the standout by far. Our waiter was friendly but not too chatty, had excellent recommendations, and would ask to clear plates before doing so. He also managed to notice we were celebrating without us bringing it up and brought out free made in house ice cream. The appetizer we wanted was out for the night, but we went with his suggestion of the marlin and it was delightful. The food is definitely great. Unique and flavorful. The location is also in a historic and charming house which I found to be lovely and romantic. Overall we had an excellent meal and experience."

  • "It had been a while since we had eaten at Four Square. Based on the food that we had this time, I would say that the chef has kicked it up a notch. Everything we had was excellent! And the service couldn't have been better. Although the entries are a bit pricey, we will definitely be back again..."

  • "We have eaten there in the past and found it excellent. This time the special sounded so good that we each ordered it. However, the meat was very tough and hard to cut. They saw our trouble and provided us with real steak knives."

  • "Enjoyed revisiting. Excellent seasonal menu. Good wine selection"

  • "This was our second dinner at Four Square. The first dinner 2 years ago was exceptional. This time it was very disappointing. Fish dishes were bland. Both dinner and dessert portion sizes were small. Very expensive for the quality of the meal."
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "The food was excellent and the service was impeccable. Historical notes about the location added a nice twist to the experience. The building itself is wonderful and the decorations inside were reasonable. It would be a great place for a special occasion. The only drawbacks: the menu was prix fixe, so the price was astronomical, and the bathroom decor was not on par with the quality of the restaurant."

  • "We eat here about 10 times a year when we are in the mood for a special occasion meal. This place gets everything right. So, make a reservation, bring your sweetie, and start the meal with a nice sparkling wine. This is a top choice in the Triangle. "

  • "This is a gem....hidden away in an historical home in Durham....awesome food made by chefs who obviously take pride in their "art"....great wait staff who are very knowledgeable about not only the menu but the wine list. I love this restaurant...my husband and I have been coming here for the last five years every year on our anniversary and have not had a one bad experience as a matter of fact it keeps getting better and better!!! I almost don't want to post this review because I hate to have other patrons "book up" our favorite restaurant!"

  • "I had a lovely dinner here with a friend to celebrate his birthday. It was my first time at Four Square but he recommended it highly and now I see why. The service was absolutely the perfect balance of attentive but respectful of our privacy and dining pace. And the food was magnificent. Great ingredients prepared thoughtfully and with interesting flavors. Portions were generous without being overwhelmingly large. We had cocktails before dinner that were delicious and well-balanced as well. It's now high on my list for returning regularly!"
