A word from Four Square Restaurant
Four Square is located in the Bartlett Mangum House, a restored 1908 Victorian home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Outside, massive Doric columns flank the entrance. A wraparound porch, second floor balcony, and slate roof capped by iron scrollwork complete the picture. Inside, the intimate dining rooms each have their original coal burning fireplaces with tiled, carved wood and mirrored mantelpieces. Leaded and stained glass windows and beautiful woodwork can be found throughout.

Our menu changes bi-monthly to reflect our commitment to bringing diners the freshest and most seasonal products available. We rely on local famers and purveyors to bring us the region’s best, from vegetables and grains to seafood and meats. We have a passion for food at Four Square, and we hope you sense it when you dine with us.

The food at Four Square was fantastic. I was really impressed with the marrow (although I'd skip the monkfish appetizer). While the atmosphere was a bit stuffy, it wasn't unexpected. The service was top-notch, and I will be returning. I initially didn't think this would be a good place for groups, but they were able to set up a separate table from the main dining room, which allowed our group to be a bit louder than the rest of the restaurant.

My girlfriend and I both had the monkfish starter and the duck breast and tuna, respectively, for our main courses. All three of these of these dishes were fantastic and our server, Meredith, presented as knowledgable while not being intrusive. Well done to the Four Square staff.

Four Square is consistently excellent. We have been dining there for years and it is always a fantastic experience. It is a lovely place for a special dinner. Their patio is particularly nice - if the weather is cooperative, ask to eat outside and you will not be disappointed!

I had heard of this restaurant awhile ago, on a list of Durham place we should really go. My husband and I finally decided to go, for our wedding anniversary. We can't wait to go back! We were given the choice of indoor or outdoor seating, with the outdoor being a screend in porch. The lighting was dim and romantic. Our server showed up immediately and was friendly and helpful. I had a question about the menu and she was able to answer it and offered me options. My husband had lamb shank - a huge portion which he truly enjoyed. I had Rabbit Salisbury Steak - just wonderful. A lovely combination of flavors to make one delicious meal. Dessert - we had 3 of them. All divine. We'll be back and so will our friends!

My friend ahd the bison flank and I the duck. We have both eaten better elsewhere. Granted there is an attempt to combine interesting ingredients but the sauce on the duck covered all flavor although the duck was well cooked. The flank steak was bland at best but the vegetables were tasty. Even the luscious looking blueberries in the dessert of vanilla creme lacked flavor. We had eaten here before and figured why not try to see if it got better...it didn't. Keep in mind that food is a matter of taste (no pun intended) but for what this restaurant charges we do not feel it is worth another try. It should be mentioned the service was quite good but be prepared for several servers.

All aspects of the experience were wonderful. The appetizers and entrees were simply superb. The lamb belly and salted cod potato cakes were especially satisfying as was the quail. Presentation, service, description offered by our waiter were all several "cuts above" the rest. I would highly recommend this establishment. While certainly very good, dessert was not quite on par with the appetizers or entrees.

In a large turn of the century farm/estate house, Four Square is divided internally into multiple small rooms that give an intimate feel, and comfortable noise levels so that it is easy to have a dinner conversation. It also has a private screened porch for outdoor dining when the weather is right - often true evenings in Durham. The menu is varied, not overly large, and varies from season to season. The wine list is excellent with a wide range of choices and prices. The chef's touch is wondrously creative and every dish is to be savored. His menu items are prepared at the level of the very top tier of restaurants in Durham, a known "foodie" city.

The menu is a treat to read - each item is a creative preparation of fresh, locally-grown, fresh food. It's like the chef went to the farmer's market and turned the ingredients on their heads - butter-bean gravy with blackberry chicken, peaches with fried thyme - total yum! The wait staff was perfect; they even shared a recipe upon request. The screened side porch is perfect for a summer evening. There is nothing that isn't perfect about Four Square.

Outstanding, innovative food accompanied by friendly, very professional service. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful night out together. The pace of service was perfect and allowed for great conversation and, yet, no sense of waiting for the next course. The waitstaff kept an eye on our plates and drinks and only moved on to the next course when we were ready. Result - a truly great evening! While it is a little expensive, Four Square remains a great value!

Four Square was my first dining experience in Durham, and it has set the bar entirely too high. When a special occasion is on the horizon, this is the place you'll want to be.

Fine dining, ambiance and service was what we experienced the evening of our 47th wedding anniversary on August 5. We arrived a little early to enjoy a celebratory cocktail at the bar made to our own recipe. The dinner menu was enticing and we went for new, different, something I couldn't prepare at home. The crispy corned lamb belly as a starter was superb and my husband enjoyed the sweet soy octopus. We both were blown away by the crispy smoked quail and remarked on the artful presentation of all the dishes. We complemented the dinner with a very fine Zinfandel that bloomed steadily through the evening. Dessert continued the adventure with Agave-yogurt mousse and jalapeno ice cream. Our server was professional and a delight.

Impecable service from the moment you walk in. Everyone seems interested in seeing that you have a good time. Innovative food choices - with excellent results. Bartender worked with our desire to try a Rose - creating a flight for our taste testing. Chef/owner came out to say hello and to be sure everything was to our satisfaction. Table was arranged so our party would be able to talk. All-in-all a great evening and memorable dinner - as always!

We met for a special occasion and were very impressed with out first ever visit here. The food was excellent, tasty and different. There was great presentation and all four of us received our food at the very same time by four servers with great flair. We all felt very special and doted upon. To visit Durham and not dine here would be a huge loss for anyone coming to the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area. I also enjoyed the porch with the swing. It reminded me of my maternal grandparents' home. Deacon Ed from Texas

My favorite restaurant of ANY in Durham, maybe even in the Triangle. This was my second dinner. I am kind of a foodie and the food here is outstanding. Venison, fish, salads, all over the top. Service is good and friendly. So why not perfect? Last time it was the manager, this time it was the "host" who was not friendly despite my friendly overtures. What's up with that?

I took my boyfriend to Four Square for his birthday dinner and we enjoyed it all. Neither of us are big drinkers, but the wine list was extensive and impressive. The service was the standout by far. Our waiter was friendly but not too chatty, had excellent recommendations, and would ask to clear plates before doing so. He also managed to notice we were celebrating without us bringing it up and brought out free made in house ice cream. The appetizer we wanted was out for the night, but we went with his suggestion of the marlin and it was delightful. The food is definitely great. Unique and flavorful. The location is also in a historic and charming house which I found to be lovely and romantic. Overall we had an excellent meal and experience.
