Diner Reviews
  • "Great menu that is interesting enough for foodies but can accommodate kiddos. Very fresh food, bright atmosphere and fragrant smell from the bar (fresh squeezed juices)"

  • "I dined with my husband and children (7 & 10). Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We started with fried green tomatoes and ranch pop corn. The goat cheese dip was fantastic with the tomatoes, my husband loved the green goddess. We shared the wedge with blue cheese, whole family enjoyed. I had butternut squash ravioli, husband-meatloaf, son- Yankee pot roast. We passed all of the dishes and all were Delish. They accommodated my daughter with homemade pasta with Parmesan- she was thrilled. We ended the meal with Red Velvet Cake, the best I have ever had. Huge slice, not too sweet. We were also happy with their Extensive & interesting cocktail menu & very nice wine selection. Will go back next time we are in town!"

  • "Disappointed with food this time around; pastas were over cooked and a bit slimy. Burgers fell apart."

  • "Our server was friendly and helpful, the food was delicious and paced appropriately, and our fellow diners all seemed to be having as great an evening as we were. The appetizer of Breads, Dips and Crisps was one diner's favorite, the Lobster Mac & Cheese was another's, but our dessert selection of Chocolate Mousse for Two (which was enough for four people to share) sealed the deal for me."

  • "We had reservations for the Fourth of July, arrived 5 minutes early and were seated right on time. Very busy restaurant, but still did not have to wait too long to be served. Food was great!"

  • "Been here twice before, this time we were sharing it with my mother from out of town. She loved it too and we were as extremely happy with everything we had as we have been in the past. The chicken pot pie, meatloaf, straw and hay pasta, and the farm bread starters are to die for! We look forward to going back and trying the rest of the menu. :)"

  • "We visited DC for a long July 4 weekend, and I made a reservation here a month before our visit. It is an incredibly busy place, and even though we still had reservations, we had to wait 10 minutes or so for our table. I suspect that this was due to the July 4 weekends crowds in DC. The food was delicious and the service was excellent, considering how busy the place was on our visit. I had the Wood-Planked Salmon Entree, which was very good and came with a generous amount of fresh green beans and broccolini. My husband's July 4 weekend special (small portion of bbq ribs, small chili dog, and two small slider burgers with a delicious onion relish, fries) was very good as well. We enjoy the farm to table efforts and they do a great job!"

  • "First of all, make sure you book through Open Table because this is one of the most popular breakfast places in DC. No reservation and the breakfast wait can be up to 90 minutes. However the food is worth it. The eggs are fresh and organic and served in oversized portions accompanied by shredded leek hash browns, choice of toasted bread and choice of meat. The stuffed french toast is decadent: stuffed with vanilla pastry cream and served with maple cinnamon syrup. Of course it is all enhanced with a spicy Bloody Mary starter! Coffee is strong and delicious and there is no pressure from the wait staff to hurry you along. Highly recommendable --great service and great atmosphere"

  • "I tried a new menu item the Chicken Pot Pie, it was excellent, their drinks are great, the appetizers are awesome. Everything my family had to eat was awesome"

  • "We had a party of 10 for brunch. We had a reservation but still had to wait about 15 minutes for our table, hence the 4 stars on service instead of 5. Everything else was a great experience. Our waiter was helpful and efficient, the food was delicious and even though the restaurant was very crowded we had no problem hearing the conversations at our table. Loved it and will plan to go back!"

  • "This was our 2nd visit to Founding Farmers. We would have gone more, but have had trouble getting reservations. The food is wonderful and creative. The adults in our party are vegetarians, but we had our 2 young grandchildren who eat meat if it is local, no antibiotics, and humanely raised. They were elated to be able to get hot-dogs with a side salad. All of the food items and beer were excellent. It is noisy, but that wouldn't keep us from going back."

  • "Friends and I went for a retirement celebration on a Sunday - so glad to have a reservation as it was over an hour wait for a seat - waitress was attentive and comped fried green tomatoes since they were not timely delivered. Bar drinks were very good, food variety excellent and very good - entrees delicious and appealing - will definitely go again!"

  • "Ordered a variety of lunch items-mussels, chop, burger, bread, salad and drinks. Nothing noteworthy."

  • "The food was great, mostly simple comfort food but very, very good and high quality. It had a very hipster-eske vibe. The waitress was great as well. The only downside was that one of our friends got there 15 minutes after our reservation and we then had to wait an additional 30 minutes to be seated. Not entirely the resturaunts' fault, it was just frustrating since we did make a reservation to avoid that type of problem."

  • "After a decent brunch several months ago, my boyfriend and I decided to return to Founding Farmers on July 4. Although our food took forever to appear, we patiently waited. During that period of waiting for our waffles (waffles and strawberries for me & waffles and chicken for my bf), we overheard several customers asking servers to exchange their waffle for a less burnt waffle. I assumed these people were being extra picky and rude until we received our waffles. They were extremely hard and brown. We ate our waffles with the conclusion that we wouldn't be back."

  • "We were visiting our daughter who lives in DC and had eaten here once before. She did not oversell it in the least! Great vibe and open airy dining room (we ate upstairs). The steak sandwich with fried onions was amazing and didn't even need the au jus sauce that came with it. Very tasty and quickly shared at our table. The real closer is the chocolate mousse bucket for two...our family of FOUR could barely finish this best in class dessert, with fresh whipped cream and drizzled caramel on top. Great service as well. I will definitely re-visit on future business and family trips!"

  • "My wife and I thought of waiting out the crowds after the fireworks at this place. She really wanted to have the "dogs" on the menu only to be disappointed when told that they ran out of the dogs. Really? On the 4th? I think I was more let down that she was, despite me being a vegetarian. So she asked for the Chicken and Waffles, of which they said they ran out of Waffles. Seriously? For a restaurant that touts making everything to order, is it that difficult to make waffle-batter? Well my wife ordered the Shrimp Buccatini, which she loved. I ordered the TurkeyLESS burger, but first got a regular turkey burger. I still don't remember how I managed to control my temper at that point. Yes, and the ever-missing server who was hardly available."

  • "The food is always good, but every time I go, I feel like the front desk and the wait staff feel like they are doing me a favor. At night, they seem to play favorites on who gets tables and where, and then the waitstaff is so smug. Oh well, I guess I'm old school and expect cheerful helpful staff"
    Dined on 6/30/2014
  • "The quality of the food is amazing, the service outstanding! The only bad thing is that it's quite noisy but you can get over that. Red velvet cake is the best in DC! The bacon cheese dates are also a must!"

  • "When in DC you must visit Founding Farmers. The restaurants ambiance is wonderful. The staff were all friendly. The food was delicious! I wish we had a Founding Farmers in Florida!"

  • "Second time at founding farmers and they never disappoint! once again, best to have a reservation or be prepared to wait. we were seated quickly with our res and had a fantastic brunch. the wait staff is knowledgeable and friendly, though very busy so had to help them along, but no big deal. the food is delicious. fluffer nutter app, chicken and waffles, and the behemoth that is the stuffed french toast were all fantastic. would definitely recommend and will definitely return!"

  • "This was our first experience at Founding Farmers. Overall it was a pleasant dining situation. Noise level was high. Ambience was very nice. The food was good but not outstanding. Ravioli dish was overcooked so the pasta was chewey and the beef dip sandwich was primary made of bread. Very few vegetarian offerings. Would not rush back to this restaurant."

  • "It would be nice to enjoy a meal and be able to have a conversation without raising your voice. I understand the upstairs is not as noisy. If I return, I may try to sit upstairs. We got seated close to 5 minutes after checking in with our reservation. The last time we dined there we waited 45 minutes past our reservation. This is the restaurant we've been told is the "it" spot in DC. If that's the case, I wonder about the dining scene there. My poached eggs were practically hard boiled. Maybe I've now ordered two blah meals, but I wouldn't recommend. My best item was the Bloody Mary. Have a drink there and go somewhere else for food."

  • "Our Pastas had been prepared hours, if not days, before and lack flavor and texture. The Farmer's salad was good, but the minestrone soup was mushy and bland. The turkey sandwich had no flavor, lacking even the mustard it was said to come with, and since they had run out of chips, limp, cold fries were substituted. Not a stellar performance. While I think they are trying to stick to the original premise of fresh, local ingredients, the execution does nothing to fully use the virtues of the ingredients, Service was slow but friendly and the place is nice, especially upstairs where the noise level is passable. Very sad to loose this place from our restaurant rotation."

  • "I have been to Founding Farmers a few times and typically the service and food are excellent. However, this last time on June 29th, it was a but different. With reservations, we were sat right away. But the service and food were off. Servers were very friendly but they didn't seem sure of themselves. I ordered a dinner salad and when they brought it to me, half the ingredients were missing. When I asked about it, they had to look at the menu to see what was missing. A seasoned employee would have known. I will return, it was just an off night for them."

  • "We visited the place on the 4 of July eve. The restaurant was full and we were late comparing to our reservation time. Nevertheless, we were given a table in just a few minutes. Our waiter was great trying to anticipate all our needs. The food was very good and the size of each meal was very generous, yet the price was quite moderate. A real gem in a neighborhood."

  • "I was scared off by the noise level downstairs at the reception desk, but once we moved upstairs we were removed from the roaring din near the bar. The food was good; my reuben sandwich was really good. Our server was always available to refill our drinks without being intrusive. The chocolate mousse dessert is described as being for two, in reality it could have easily fed 3-4. On the whole, I thought it was good value in terms of the quality of the food, the service and the prices."

  • "Sadly, the first time I visited a few years ago it was almost perfect and was an upscale experience, from the food, decor, service to the ambiance. This time, however, was quite a let down. We went for lunch on a Friday and the place is packed like a zoo. The place is showing wear and tear. Our server didn't show up for 5-10 minutes to take our order after we sat down. After we ordered, for 20-30 minutes there was no sign of our server and no food. We had to flag down the waitress at the next table and ask her to find our server. When food finally came, two of the entrees were fine but nothing to write home about; and one entree was so salty it was almost inedible. Our server offered his apologies but nothing else. I won't be coming back."

  • "My friend and I went for a late dinner on a week night (Wednesday, 9pm) and we were still forced to wait 10 min to be seated. Although that would irritate me at most resturants, it's something Founding Farmers is notorious for so I was pleased we only had to wait 10 and not upwards of 30min. However, we got seated and immediately placed our order since we knew what we wanted. It took the waiter probably about 25 min to even bring water to the table, and he was very aloof and even rude. When the food finally came, probably at 45 min after being seated, there were no problems and the food was delicious. The waiter however never came to check on us. All we had to eat was an entree and coffee to follow and the meal was 2 hours long."

  • "I live in the neighborhood and my wife and I have visited Founding Farmers dozens of times over the last couple years. Our last three experiences have been terrible, marked by declining quality of service, food and general management of the resturant. We brought a party of 8 at 6pm and were seated for an hour before we received the first of the dishes we ordered, which were brought out 1 by 1 over the span of 15 mins, many of which we're not even remotely close to what we ordered. I had to leave the table twice to try and find our waiter. We had to flag another for help with drink refills at the 90 min mark. We had entrees with no silverware, coffee with no cream. It was miserable, I was embarrassed in front of my guests and won't be back."

  • "Love Founding Fathers. Food is great. Service is outstanding. I must go there more often."
    Dined on 7/3/2014
  • "The food was very tasty and the waitstaff was adequate. Nothing real special that made them noteworthy. The issues with reservation times seem to continue but seem to be due to people lingering at tables. The Hostesses were unprofessional and seemed like schoolgirls that didn't realize they were there to work. I would eat here again but not at such a busy time."
    Dined on 7/3/2014
  • "I enjoyed the food. The seafood deviled eggs were an interesting idea and work well. The regular deviled eggs were a bit too much of an attempt to be different with a course grind and no mustard. I'm a bit of a traditionalist about my comfort foods. I had the pot pie which was as good as I've ever had. The dish was too big so I took it some of it home, got stuck in traffic, scrounged up a fork, and ate in my car. Wonderfully done and alone makes this place worth a revisit. Service was polite and solid. My only complaint is that the tables are too close for a reasonably private business or personal lunch."
