Founding Farmers - DCRedeemed ExperienceI've dined at Founding Farmers when it first opened and didn't exactly enjoy my experience. Going back a few weeks ago I was hesitant, but throughout enjoyed my brunch on a busy Saturday morning. Fast forward to two days ago and once again I was impressed. Best waffles I've ever had, perfectly seasoned chicken, and yummy eggs. Their lemonade is the best in town, I swear. And we loved our waitress, she was great. Everyone gave their meals and experience 5 stars and it was the perfect start to my day.
Thanks FF!5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food and great settingWent for the first time with my wife before going to a show and we both very much enjoyed it. Her drink (Scorpion) was a refreshing, tropical flavored drink. My Dark & Stormy with real ginger beer packed a lot of punch and flavor. We had the bacon lollies for an appetizer, which were good, although a little too much on the sweet side for our tastes. Seeing the PEI mussels walk past though, we'll definitely be trying them next time. My shrimp and grits was just ok (the 'low-light' of the meal). The grits were ok, the sausage was too spicy for me (stupid northern European roots), and there was a lot of grease in the plate towards the end. Her chicken & waffles were excellent, but the mac & cheese side left something to be desired.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGreatnessThis place was amazing as always. I loved the atmosphere, the service, and, of course, the food. It gives a great dining experience, and there's lots to choose from.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMMother's Day GiftMy family and I ate at Foundinger Farmers on Mother's Day 2013. I had not been to this restuarant prior. I really enjoyed the options they had for brunch as well as the accompanying prices. I am a native of Ohio, as are my visitng family members. We were all very pleased. I will be sure to visit again.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMThe best breakfast in theThe best breakfast in the Wash Metro area...maybe the East coast. Make sure you reserve (on OpenTable) well in advance.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful Healthy ExperienceLoved the idea of a resterant celebrating sustainable farming and fresh food. Went here on Mother's Day Sunday before a concert at the Kennedy Center. Our waiter could not have been more charming and efficient. There was such variety on the menu we had trouble choosing. The fried green tomatoes are delicious as was the lobster macaroni and cheese. Try the warm cookie plate for dessert with a scoop of home made ice cream!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent Mother's Day ServiceThe drinks were a little slow coming out, but other than that the service was prompt, attentive, and just wonderful. Our waitress was lovely, I wish I could remember her name.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMMother's Day BrunchHad a wonderful Mother's Day Brunch here. I had the Crab Benedict, and it was probably the best breakfast I have ever had!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent! We really liked Founding Farmers... from the corn bread to the home-made ginger-ale, everything was great. A must-do while in DC. Food was very fresh and we were really surprised by how affordable the prices were. For a family of 5, we 3 teenagers, we spent less than $200 - including tip. We will be back.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMvery good but a little loudWe went to celebrate our 17th anniversary. It came highly recommended. The food was excellent but it was a little loud.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding Dining ExperienceOne of the best dining experiences we've had in a while. The relaxed environment and excellent service along with a diverse and interesting menu of drinks and food, all of which had outstanding flavors and presentation, resulted in a excellent evening of food and enjoyment. Watch out for the deserts, they are huge!! Enough for two easily.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMQuickly became my favoriteAfter my first visit, Founding Farmers became my favorite breakfast spot. Of the dozen or so times I've been, I've only had one bad experience, and the manager did everything she could to make it right. The banana foster milkshake is a must try (not listed on the menu, so ask for it). The banana foster pancakes are also delicious. I usually order the steak and eggs as my go to fab, but the chicken and waffles and blueberry pancakes are also great!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMhealthIt was great to know the food I was eating was sustainable and healthy.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMFood allergies? Don't Worry!I've been to FF before & it's always great. This time, I brought my Mom, who has tree nut, cocoa, & shellfish allergies, there for Sat. night Mother's Day weekend dinner. Our server was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and most importantly, careful about what she recommended to my mom, from drinks to entrees. She did it in a way that most servers don't- we didn't feel like we were getting any "special" treatment- just that my mom was a regular diner. That was really exceptional. She mentioned the allergies before we did (I had put it in the notes on the res.) and my mom felt really at ease (rare!) and comfortable. Not to mention the food and cocktails were amazing as always. Thanks, FF! Best experience w/allergies we've ever had!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always I had a fantasticAs always I had a fantastic experience! Definitely make a reservation as soon as you know you want to eat here because it fills up! I had the black pepper Gnochi (second time ordering this) and it did not disappoint. It is my favorite item on the menu so far (although I don't think I would be disappointed with anything on the menu!) I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you haven't already!5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMBreakfast was amazingThe food at Founding Farmer's has never disappointed me. It is always fresh, hot, and delicious. If you are ever in the Foggy Bottom area, it is a must go to restaurant. I also love the fact that they use local grown and in season things to inspire their menu. Their homemade ginger ale is to die for and I have their crab eggs benedict every time I go for breakfast or brunch (it's that good!).5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food is fresh, wings areThe food is fresh, wings are to die for, breads and spreads are a must. Try their milkshake. Seating is a pain ,they seat you per your reservation and are quite inflexible about adding a chair. And they have two floors .... for lunch at11:45.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMFinally! Yess!Me and a group of friends have been trying to get a reservation at Founding Farmers for months and we finally got it; it was good food and a fun time. I love the energy of the place.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMCarrot cake nom nom nom.Everything was delicious. The waitress was incredibly helpful. The bacon lollis were just about the best thing I ever tasted, and I've been dreaming of the carrot cake ever since.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMOrder the corn!Founding Farmers is one of the best restaurants in DC, hands down. Its an amazing bang for your buck at $20 for a half chicken that likely lived a wonderful life before it landed on your table. Delicious! If there are two things to order its 1) the mexican corn on the cob (covered in cheese) which is not on the menu. Just ask for it. 2) the beignets on the dessert menu. They take 20 mins to cook so order them once your food has arrived and you'll be happy that you did.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMA popular place that offersA popular place that offers good service, an excellent menu. The one negative is it's a bit noisy. But we'd go back.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways well doneThis is one of those places that is consistently excellent. Wonderful, modern versions of comfort food made with fresh, organic ingredients and all the care and respect the food deserves. Make sure to enjoy a cocktail made by actual talented bartenders.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat restaurant -- too noisyI was looking forward to dining at Founding Farmers, but having a business meeting there was a mistake. Getting in to the hostess desk to check in on our reservation was a contact sport -- so many people piled up waiting in the same area. Our table for 4 was adjacent to the bar, and although it was lunch time, it was so noisy, we practically had to yell to one another. The food was excellent - the Ahi tuna salad was exceptional. I'm just sorry I couldn't have enjoyed it in a quieter setting.
I think it's funny in the rating above for the 'noise level' the highest is 'energetic' -- how about deafening? I had such a headache when we left.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMBecoming a Regular...This was my fourth time at Founding Farmer. The place is always hopping so I had to make this reservation for several weeks in advance, but it was worth it. We started with the fried green tomatoes; they were made great by the green goddess dressing. My mom ordered her usual favorite: the Newbrunswick Stew. I branched out with the crab cakes with pureed butternut squash and the collared greens. The crab cakes were excellent, very crab-y not bread-y. My dad got the boneless rib-eye with the sweet potato and green beans (starting with the farmer's salad). Our server was nice and friendly. I am very indecisive when ordering and she patiently and warmly answered all my questions about the menu, helpfully offering her personal recommendations.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMYummy! After multiple attempts at securing a reservation, I ate at Founding Farmers with a colleague. Overall we had a great experience, but I feel like I need to say that the hype around this restaurant is off balance with the reality of it. The atmosphere is noisy, bustling and casual (this isn't the place for a romantic dinner). The concept is fantastic - fresh, local, natural. The cocktails are inventive. The service was great. The food is very good - we had cornbread to start, followed by halibut. The fish was cooked to perfection but the side dishes of roasted root vegetables and collard greens were overcooked. We shared a massive piece of carrot cake which was excellent. I'd return here again for sure, but Narnia it's not...5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMLarge group dinnerBooked two tables for a total of 20. Nice informal atmosphere though a bit noisy. Appreciated that the restaurant let us squeeze in one last minute addition, and was flexible on checks.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMReal. Delicious.Founding Farmers makes just about everything fresh, especially in their cocktails. In a city known for $10 cocktails, here you can actually get a Dark n' Stormy with homemade ginger beer. I didn't even know that homemade ginger beer existed.
As a Buffalo native, I am hesitant to trust chicken wings outside of the 716, but the slow roasted soy glazed wings at FF are amazing. I would happily get a takeout order of these for dinner any night of the week. Not greasy, and perfectly crispy.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMPopular Place in Washington DCFortunately, we reserved a table at Founding Farmers in advance. On our first visit, a Tuesday night, we arrived a Founding Farmers early and it was already crowded. Once we were seated, we started off by ordering two cocktails and an appetizer. We both agreed that the fried green tomatoes were probably the best we had ever eaten. We are cocktail fans that love to try new drinks. We were very happily surprised by the very large cocktail menu and the variety of great choices. The main course and dessert were absolutely delicious.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMRemarkable cocktailsWe had an excellent dinner at founding farmers. We were lucky enough to find a seat at the end of the bar before dinner and we watched the bartenders /mixologists with amazement as they put together some crazy combinations and outstanding cocktails. The drink menu alone is worth the trip but add great food, excellent service and a wonderful accommodating staff and there is a combination that wins a max rating.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMRepeat dinerFrom CT and have dined at FF at least 5 times in the last 3 years. Service is prompt, friendly and attentive. Food is consistently very good. Portions are extremely generous so arrive hungry! Fun with a large group.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat spot!Love the idea of this restaurant. Great ingredients. Great vegetarian menu. Drinks were way to expensive. $12 for a rum and coke?!5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMMake sure to reserve in advance!Food was fabulous. The wait staff was extremely helpful with recommendations as what paired well together. Our party of 2 ordered fried green tomatoes , apple/onion jam/Brie bread, a large salad and the pork/lentil stew. All were EXCELLENT. I plan on coming here again and sample their craft drink menu. And the prices were extremely reasonable-all that food and a bottle of wine for less than $80!!!. I am glad that I made reservations in advance as there appeared to be a long line.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellentHad a great meal here. Service was very good and the food was top notch.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Food and ServiceThe service is great and the food is out of this world. They serve you nice portions, I had to take half of my lunch with me. I rate the service and food an A+5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMFounding Farmers Birthday Dinner-Sat by the bar, noise level was high
-Didn't order cocktails from the menu, but was told by the server that they can create you a drink. You choose the alcohol and if you prefer sweet, savory or sour and they hook you up.
-Ordered shrimp and grits. Was good, but the large grain of the grits was unexpected. They were more like hominy than the breakfast grits I was anticipating
-Other menu items we had, blackened pepper chicken wings, gnocchi & sausage and chicken & waffles were very good.
-Was disappointed that our server didn't tell us beforehand that the beignets took 25 minutes to prepare, so even though we had our hearts set, we didn't have them.
-Overall good divining experience, would probably return to check out other menu items.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMFounding FarmersGreat restaurant, wish I had more time in DC to try more of their dishes but would definitely come back if I find myself in DC again.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat ExperienceMy daughter and I were visiting DC for a couple of days and had dinner at the Founding Farmers during our stay. We had a fabulous experience from as soon as we walked in the door. The staff were friendly and attentive. We found the restaurant to have an extensive menu with lots of great options to choose. The cornbread appetizer was very good. The Entres were very good and were cooked exactly as we ordered. i had the Plank Salmon and my daughter had a steak. I would definitely go back there on our next occasion to visit Washington.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent FoodThe food and service were fantastic. The varied menu and bar listing was in depth and delicious.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMfarm to table fabulousFresh food, well-crafted drinks, and great service in an un-pretentious atmosphere.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMComfort Food in Big CityFounding Farmers is a great place to go to hang out with friends and for the delicious food.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMFresh and Delicious! We went with a group and had a great table but it was a little loud. The menu is a fantastic selection of fresh and inventive farm to table items. They are very vegetarian and vegan friendly. We had a diverse crowd and everyone seemed very happy with the food. I would definitely recommend (even as a foodie from NYC!)5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMrecommended as best brunch in DCDefinitely was awesome brunch! Great service. Great menu!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMJust Perfect...From the staff, to the ambiance to the food everything was on an exceptional level. Fit for a special evening or just a fun night with friends this place has everything for everyone! Book early and book often. We only wish we lived in D.C. so that we could experience all three of the daily meals at this gem.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistently excellentI've been to Founding Fathers several times now, and I can say that my food has been consistently delicious. I would particularly recommend the mussels appetizer, the black pepper and sausage gnocchi, and the chicken and waffles. The service can sometimes be slow, but I feel they've been getting better in that department lately.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful ExperienceI took a group of 5 following the Race for Hope. We got to the restaurant a tiny bit earlier than my reservation time but we were luckily able to get in a little earlier. We had amazing food and our waitress was simply fantastic. I've been here 4 times now and this was by far the best time I had been there. No one spoke when their food came out, but the smiles said it all. Again, the service really was the cherry on top for our brunch. Our waitress was by far the most attentive person I have ever had at any restaurant. When I get her name off my receipt I will have to send out a follow up because everyone should request her from now on when going to Founding Farmers.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a better than wonderfulWe had a better than wonderful dining experience here. From the moment we checked in at the door to the moment we walked out the door. My two sisters and I ordered the Prime Rib which was served perfectly to our liking and truly enjoyed it along with their signature macaroni and cheese. YUM. However, the quality control monitor in the kitchen, unbeknownst to us, saw the remains on our plates and thought that meat quality was a bit fatty so they adjusted our bill to make up for this. The manager, Catie, brought this to our attention and could not have been more apologetic. We thought "WOW, their food standards really are what they say... the best and freshest available". Truly a restaurant that practices what they preach!!!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat meal as usualWe go here every couple months with other couples for drinks and dinner and are never disappointed.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMReserve early!Founding Farmers is one of the must dine experiences DC has to offer. Considering I've always gone in small parties, the service is excellent and the food is some of the tastiest Americana I have enjoyed anywhere.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMLove Founding Farmers except for...This is my second visit to Founding Farmers. My husband brought me here for my birthday (my reservation was a 6:00pm) and it was a pretty good experience except the music was waayyy too loud and it gave me a headache! Maybe this is because we were seated near the bar area which I will not sit near again!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWeekend BrunchVisiting from Texas a friend recommended Founding Farmers for breakfast. It was a great choice. Loved the huge stack of pancakes and the hash browns. I did not ask, but presume that the maple syrup was real maple. It certainly tasted like it. The hot chocolate was made with a very fine dark chocolate and was not the typical sugary hot chocolate. It would have been nice if they'd had a microwave to be able to heat up the hot chocolate as it was not as hot as I like it. I presume that has something to do with the organic nature, but I'm not sure what. Note that they open late (9 a.m.) on weekends for "brunch" (same menu as weekday "breakfast" which starts at 7:00 a.m. Homemade strawberry jelly was great on English muffins.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
