We enjoyed the food and food choices. This was our first time at Founding Farmers. It was pretty noisy but not enough to drive you crazy. You definitely need reservations. We had reservations and were seated right away. However, the people that were coming in without reservations were told it would be an hour or more for a table. This was a Monday night.

Founding Farmers in D.C. did not disappoint. The food was very good and the service was excellent. Our server, Sequoia, was a purer pleasure. She was helpful and her suggestions were spot on. The only problem is the quantity of wonderful choices available on the menu. I had the shrimp and grits and it was terrific. last time I had the delicious chicken and waffles.Try the cucumber cocktail - so refreshing! Oh, and don't pass on the chicken wings. They are Amazing!

Tried going for Sunday Brunch but was super busy. We made reservations for a later time with opentable. Table was ready when we got there and they were still busy! (Love opentable) Food was good. They also ran out of some food choices which we found out after trying to order them.

I thoroughly enjoyed the food and ambiance! The servers were plenty but few times had to flag one down for something (milk should be automatic with coffee or asked; so should butter, jam, ketchup.. but weren't). The four of us enjoyed every bite and will be back for sure!

This was my second time returning to Founding Farmers. I have only ever been here for breakfast but I will not hesitate in saying it is the best breakfast I have ever had in my life. The eggs are cooked and seasoned deliciously. I get the leek hash browns and at first will admit I was tentative, but they are amazing - do not need ketchup - they stand on their own. The fresh homemade strawberry preserves that are brought out are truly the cherry on top. I would highly recommend this place. Also - you WILL need a reservation, and with some time in advance. It's worth it though.

My wife and I took a trip to DC for four days. We were told to try out finding farmers. The best spot I've been in a long time. The environment is appealing and friendly. The menu has something for everyone and I mean everyone. We will definitely go back to this restaurant again.

I came for dinner on a Saturday and was pleasantly surprised that we didn't have to wait at all to be seated- we did have a reservation, but experiences at the sister-restaurant Farmers Fishers Bakers had made me anticipate a long wait. Everything we ordered was great, especially recommend the salmon. Really lively ambiance, overall a great experience!

We are visiting Washington DC on vacation and like to try new places when traveling. Found this spot on he web and was an amazing find. The food was excellent, including the skillet cornbread which was the best we've ever had anywhere. Our server was friendly and entertaining. The wine list was very nice and the ambiance was unique, interesting and inviting. Highly recommend Founding Farmers to anyone, including vegetarians. A unique and delicious selection of vegetarian entrees. You won't be disappointed!!

I have eaten at FF for brunch and lunch several times, but this was my first dinner at FF. While the food was very good, the atmosphere is not exactly fit for a dinner date. It's great for groups, because then you'll get a booth, but for a two-some or four-some the seating is very tiny and close together. The waitress was great, but she kept me waiting 25 minutes for my drink--busy bar I suppose. The portions are huge, even the appetizers. As such, we were full on the appetizers alone and just ended up getting more drinks and dessert, which was also huge. The drinks were very small:( I think FF is a D.C. gem, but not for dinner, where the things that make it so appealing for brunch or lunch only drag it down: too quirky, too casual and too trendy (although the guests looked quite unfashionable--there was a dude in sweatpants!?). It's just not worth the cost of a meal out, the success of which rests on service and atmosphere. The quality of the food must also be good, but I assume if I'm at a nice resturant it will be. The wine was overpriced and underwhelming, and selection was limited.

  • Comfort food with a fresh look.
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009

The online menu was tempting but the descriptions couldn't adequately convey how fresh, innovative and well-prepared the dishes were. Farm-fresh deviled eggs with the crisp crunch of chives and lightly candied bacon served lollipop style on skewers went well with craft beers. Slow cooked beef and pork ribs were outstanding, as were the sides, which included a nice twist to traditional succotash prepared with a medley of root vegetables and cauliflower instead of the traditional corn and limas. The fried chicken salad with freshly made Ranch dressing was a winner, as was the house ciabatta bread that was served with it. The bread was so good we ordered more for the table. A tempting array of desserts seemed too much after the meal until we spied the warm cookies. Five different varieties of cookies, still warm from the oven, provided the perfect touch of something sweet to be shared by our party of four. The only challenge with FF is for those avoiding sugars as most of the dishes included fruit, sweet sauces/glazes, or starch.

  • Founding Farmers Finds Niche
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009

With all the craze about farm to table food, Founding Farmers has found their niche. With great flavors, a stellar ambiance, and extensive cocktail list, Founding Farmers ensures that any foodie will be more than satisfied at a reasonable price. Every dish is filling, nuance, and tasty. With my third time dining there within 3 months, I was impressed that yet another dish hit the mark for me. As a word of caution, make a reservation. The restaurant is always jumping no matter the hour, but reservations are honored very well, and easy to make. Certainly, I will return in the near future.

As always the food was exceptional. Unfortunately this visit our waiter was very apathetic and unhelpful, which surprised me considering my prior favorable experience with the wait staff. It won't deter me from coming again though, since this is my favorite restaurant in the foggy bottom area.

Went here for a dinner, and was surprised at the relatively reasonable prices (except for drinks, which were quite pricy, and while not bad, probably not worth what they were charging -- presumably the bar is subsidizing the food menu somewhat). The food itself was also rather good, but the drawback of the noise level was something of a turn-off. I'd go back for the food, but wouldn't, for example, bring my family there as they would most certainly not enjoy the noise level. Overall a nice experience, though.

  • Shaky Thursday evening at Foundig Farmers, DC.

Thursday 11/20 6:30 pm reserved. Our second visit, the first was just right. They've lost their way, this is a management issue. More clientele than existing staff can handle, service has suffered. Main course served at disparate intervals, one main arrived 10 min. before the other three. Trout was seriously overcooked, my Arctic char, however, was perfect. Two sides were not as per order. Another table was charged to our cc no. The error was fixed at once. Wine spilled by server. However, it's the best, reasonably-priced wine list that I've ever seen. Sadly disappointing for a place with good to excellent food. A less than agreeable evening with friends.

Had lunch with 3 co-workers on Wednesday. There was a little bit of a wait for our reservation. Everyone was happy with their lunch selection and the cornbread was a big hit. One of us is a vegetarian who needs to avoid/limit gluten. While there were lots of great vegetarian choices, most were not gluten free. I suggest FF revises a few of it's "meatless section" choices to be gluten free. For instance, it would be easy to make the cauliflower steak gluten free. But all in all it was a good experience.

With the help of our server, we had two great dishes! The crowd was the hipster crowd and LOUD. We had to wait even with a reservation, which was not a problem, the problem was I felt I had to keep going to the hostess station to be sure she would not give my reservation away. It was my wife's birthday and I wanted to make this a special night. The hipsters were obnoxious and privileged thinking, other than that, it is still one of my favorite spots. The food was pretty darn good. We left satisfied. My wife had the chicken and waffles, the Mac n Cheese was watery, but tasty. Her waffles were good...nice touch with vanilla flavored syrup. She said the chicken was good, but not fried to a golden brow, but it was done, flavorful and seasoned well. I had the goat cheese filled ravioli over butternut squash, DELICIOUS! We had dessert at home, cake and champagne. We had a good time, hostess was very good, service good, but it was too loud. We both had the cucumber melon drink....loved it! My wife had two. My wife also ordered the Clementine and she said it was nasty, too hot and too strong. The last time I had it, it was very tasty.

  • The food part made the night...

    Dined on 11/17/2014
-The downstairs is smaller and their "waiting" area is not big enough. By the crowd, you'd think it was a weekend night, not a Monday night (of course, that would be a good thing, just need more space). -They have a policy that they don't seat until the full party is there. We had 3 of 4 and we had reservations. We were planning to order drinks and appetizers but they wouldn't seat us. We didn't understand because from 3 people or 4 people, the size of the table wouldn't change. -We decided to buy drinks at the bar downstairs while we waited. They had a list of a few beers on a chalk board. Everything we asked for, they were out of. We asked for a beer list, there was none. I understand they change their beer frequently, but how can we answer the question of "What would you like?" if we don't know what you have? BUT...we finally get seated, moving away from the crowded downstairs to the wonderful upstairs dining area. This is where things really turned around. +The ambiance upstairs was so much better. It wasn't crowded but comfortable and homey. +Our waiter, John, was FANTASTIC. He was everything that any waiter should strive to be. He definitely was the core to why things went so well. He was personable and funny. He easily split our bill 2-1-1. +The food is AMAZING. Of course the GO TO is the Chicken and Waffles. I asked John what other items were good. He told me the other 2 popular dishes, but that his personal favorite was the Shrimp and Grits. That's what I got and I cleaned.my.plate. Best shrimp and grits I have ever had. +The beers are good. Yes, we were a little turned off that we had no idea what was available to us, but John also made it easier for us. He also came and told us when the bar just switched out to a different beer, which we appreciated. +The Desserts are delicious. We shared the beignets and Red Velvet cake. John put a candle on it since we were there for a birthday. Overall, was a fantastic time. We now know what to expect for next time.

  • Good Food, but too loud

The food was very flavorful with a good variety. However, the place was busy and the tables crowded so close together that it was next to impossible to have a conversation with the person across the table from me. The other thing I was not fond of is that there are no refill on soft drinks or iced tea which, at $4 a drink, was very pricey.

We were visiting D.C. from San Francisco and discovered the restaurant after doing a Google search. Despite numerous recommendations on good places to eat, we ended up going here three times in four days (would've been four times but there were no reservations available one evening). All of the food was fantastic, and we're big foodies. Everything was incredible - taste, freshness, originality, presentation, staff, ambiance - we can't say enough positive things about it. Even the tableware was great! We were so enamored of the restaurant that we even purchased their cookbook to bring home with us, and an initial glance at the book has shown us that we were wise to buy it. It's a great read, and the recipes all look do-able (with perhaps a few substitutions to accommodate our local food availability). Great find; definitely well worth checking out!

  • Unfinished plates and Too Busy

I used to work in the Clydes restaurants, and we were always told to never let a plate leave the kitchen incomplete. My burger was delivered to me without my fries, and by the time the fries showed up, I had already eaten half of my burger. I like founding farmers, but the place is so busy that it is effecting the dining experience. You can't move anywhere, and you simply feel claustrophobic.

I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere at Founding Farmers. It was my first visit and I was not disappointed. I was so impressed with the food quality and deliciousness. The beignets were so amazing for dessert and I highly recommend the chicken pot pie--best one I have ever had in my life. No matter what meal you have at Founding Farmers, you will love it.
