As always the food was exceptional. Unfortunately this visit our waiter was very apathetic and unhelpful, which surprised me considering my prior favorable experience with the wait staff. It won't deter me from coming again though, since this is my favorite restaurant in the foggy bottom area.

Went here for a dinner, and was surprised at the relatively reasonable prices (except for drinks, which were quite pricy, and while not bad, probably not worth what they were charging -- presumably the bar is subsidizing the food menu somewhat). The food itself was also rather good, but the drawback of the noise level was something of a turn-off. I'd go back for the food, but wouldn't, for example, bring my family there as they would most certainly not enjoy the noise level. Overall a nice experience, though.

  • Shaky Thursday evening at Foundig Farmers, DC.

    Dined on 11/20/2014
Thursday 11/20 6:30 pm reserved. Our second visit, the first was just right. They've lost their way, this is a management issue. More clientele than existing staff can handle, service has suffered. Main course served at disparate intervals, one main arrived 10 min. before the other three. Trout was seriously overcooked, my Arctic char, however, was perfect. Two sides were not as per order. Another table was charged to our cc no. The error was fixed at once. Wine spilled by server. However, it's the best, reasonably-priced wine list that I've ever seen. Sadly disappointing for a place with good to excellent food. A less than agreeable evening with friends.

Love the locavore focus, but it's a crowded place even with a reservation, and the service is so-so. Food is good for what it is, but my last meal there missed the mark as being super special. Overrated and hyped up at this point.

We've been to Founding Farmers DC several times and always had a great meal and a fun time in a lively atmosphere. Service is efficient and friendly, the food is very good and a nice mix of trendy and classic. The creations from the bar run the gamut too. This restaurant is very much like an American-style bistro, where nothing is taken too seriously but the experience always satisfies.

Had lunch with 3 co-workers on Wednesday. There was a little bit of a wait for our reservation. Everyone was happy with their lunch selection and the cornbread was a big hit. One of us is a vegetarian who needs to avoid/limit gluten. While there were lots of great vegetarian choices, most were not gluten free. I suggest FF revises a few of it's "meatless section" choices to be gluten free. For instance, it would be easy to make the cauliflower steak gluten free. But all in all it was a good experience.

  • My wife's birthday
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014

With the help of our server, we had two great dishes! The crowd was the hipster crowd and LOUD. We had to wait even with a reservation, which was not a problem, the problem was I felt I had to keep going to the hostess station to be sure she would not give my reservation away. It was my wife's birthday and I wanted to make this a special night. The hipsters were obnoxious and privileged thinking, other than that, it is still one of my favorite spots. The food was pretty darn good. We left satisfied. My wife had the chicken and waffles, the Mac n Cheese was watery, but tasty. Her waffles were good...nice touch with vanilla flavored syrup. She said the chicken was good, but not fried to a golden brow, but it was done, flavorful and seasoned well. I had the goat cheese filled ravioli over butternut squash, DELICIOUS! We had dessert at home, cake and champagne. We had a good time, hostess was very good, service good, but it was too loud. We both had the cucumber melon drink....loved it! My wife had two. My wife also ordered the Clementine and she said it was nasty, too hot and too strong. The last time I had it, it was very tasty.

  • The food part made the night...
    Paullly
    Dined on 11/17/2014
-The downstairs is smaller and their "waiting" area is not big enough. By the crowd, you'd think it was a weekend night, not a Monday night (of course, that would be a good thing, just need more space). -They have a policy that they don't seat until the full party is there. We had 3 of 4 and we had reservations. We were planning to order drinks and appetizers but they wouldn't seat us. We didn't understand because from 3 people or 4 people, the size of the table wouldn't change. -We decided to buy drinks at the bar downstairs while we waited. They had a list of a few beers on a chalk board. Everything we asked for, they were out of. We asked for a beer list, there was none. I understand they change their beer frequently, but how can we answer the question of "What would you like?" if we don't know what you have? BUT...we finally get seated, moving away from the crowded downstairs to the wonderful upstairs dining area. This is where things really turned around. +The ambiance upstairs was so much better. It wasn't crowded but comfortable and homey. +Our waiter, John, was FANTASTIC. He was everything that any waiter should strive to be. He definitely was the core to why things went so well. He was personable and funny. He easily split our bill 2-1-1. +The food is AMAZING. Of course the GO TO is the Chicken and Waffles. I asked John what other items were good. He told me the other 2 popular dishes, but that his personal favorite was the Shrimp and Grits. That's what I got and I cleaned.my.plate. Best shrimp and grits I have ever had. +The beers are good. Yes, we were a little turned off that we had no idea what was available to us, but John also made it easier for us. He also came and told us when the bar just switched out to a different beer, which we appreciated. +The Desserts are delicious. We shared the beignets and Red Velvet cake. John put a candle on it since we were there for a birthday. Overall, was a fantastic time. We now know what to expect for next time.

The food was very flavorful with a good variety. However, the place was busy and the tables crowded so close together that it was next to impossible to have a conversation with the person across the table from me. The other thing I was not fond of is that there are no refill on soft drinks or iced tea which, at $4 a drink, was very pricey.

We were visiting D.C. from San Francisco and discovered the restaurant after doing a Google search. Despite numerous recommendations on good places to eat, we ended up going here three times in four days (would've been four times but there were no reservations available one evening). All of the food was fantastic, and we're big foodies. Everything was incredible - taste, freshness, originality, presentation, staff, ambiance - we can't say enough positive things about it. Even the tableware was great! We were so enamored of the restaurant that we even purchased their cookbook to bring home with us, and an initial glance at the book has shown us that we were wise to buy it. It's a great read, and the recipes all look do-able (with perhaps a few substitutions to accommodate our local food availability). Great find; definitely well worth checking out!

I used to work in the Clydes restaurants, and we were always told to never let a plate leave the kitchen incomplete. My burger was delivered to me without my fries, and by the time the fries showed up, I had already eaten half of my burger. I like founding farmers, but the place is so busy that it is effecting the dining experience. You can't move anywhere, and you simply feel claustrophobic.

This restaurant used to be one of my favorites, however this experience has resulted in me NEVER going here again. Our reservation was not honored, we arrived and waited 30 minutes to be seated, once seated in the noisy bar area, the server didn't know the appropriate age of the Rye Whiskey that they yammer on about, the food was overly sweet and too rich, and prepared without a thought for quality. Will skip this restaurant in future and will tell friends not to go, although that's unlikely to make much a difference to their bottom line as they seem to be content to function as a GW undergrad bar.

This place is wonderful. They had great options for my vegetarian friend visiting, and excellent meat options for my inner carnivore. My friend was extremely impressed, as was I. Made the decision to try this place purely based on the Intelligentsia coffee on the menu. Our reservation as 8:45 AM. We arrived about 6 minutes early and the doors were locked. There was a mom with her daughter also waiting to get in. They had been told that the opened atl 8:45 and would have to wait. It was about 30 degrees outside and it seemed a little odd that they couldn't open the door and ask us to wait to the left and not stand in the cold. So - my first impression was disappointing. The comment that was made when we were let in and i told the girl at the front that it was very cold out there was "we open at 8:45". The food was excellent, the wait staff was excellent and everything expect the initial greeting was perfect. But - as the saying goes - "you never get a second chance to make a first impression". How very true.

Very noisy hopping place on Friday nights. had been there before but it was never this crowded. Showed up early but we were seated 10 minutes after our reservation time. Nothing wow on the specials but that may be due to the season. This is a local farm to table place so winter isn't going to be as good as spring/summer. Excellent value if you like Reds on the wine list. Try the Decoy merlot. Service was OK. Odd thing at the end of our meal and we were asked about dessert there was a lot of hemming and hawing on our part the server suggested the begniets . They were worth the 20 minute wait but he should have told us there were 5 beignets. There was 3 of us. he could have upped it to 6 or but it to 3. I'd go back but on a different day and time of year.

We had a reservation and asked for a table near the window. We were seated 25 minutes late at a high top table which we ended up sharing with one couple and then another and not by choice. When seated, we asked the hostess if she had anything else as one in our party has back problems and as we did not wish to spend our dinner with others at the same table. She has a very nasty attitude. It was bad enough that we were seated so late and she acted as if we were just walk ins and had not made a reservation. To make matters worse, although two of us had been before, the food was terribly disappointing and we sent back the pot roast. We will not return. The cornbread was the best thing we had. Bland deviled eggs, very dry roasted chicken and just average otherwise.

A friend had suggested I visit Founding Farmers, since she learned I was in DC on business. We were a group of four, between the ages of 40 and 65, from all different walks of life. We were so pleased to find out that there was abundant selection for all of our tastes! I had prime rib; others at my table had a burger, pot roast, and chicken and waffles. Our server, Sam, had suggested the Devil-ish Eggs appetizer, which was very different, and delicious! (some had crab or salmon stuffed in them!) We all enjoyed our meals very, very much....but could not resist sharing a dessert. we had the plate of cookies, which was perfect! We also enjoyed the coconut green tea with our dessert. I do not know if/when I will be in DC again, but I do know that if I am, this will, without a doubt, be a location on my agenda! Great job, Founding Farmers!

This was but the most recent of many business breakfasts at FF. As always the service was fast and pleasant and the food was fresh tasting and perfectly prepared - a great breakfast spot.

Waiting only about 15 minutes past our res time (on a Wednesday). But once seated we had an awesome experience. Emily was our waitress. She was helpful and everything she recommended was excellent. We started with fried green toms, they were ok, the had the skillet cornbread. Oh my god. It was amazing. Must try and $5 for 2-3 people. I hades the pork prime rib chop which was phenomenal. My wife had the Arctic char which was excellent. We had a Farmer Jon mixed drink which was smooth and beignets for dessert which were excellent. Will definitely go again and will tbe commend it. If you are wanting less Georgetown Uni folks and more quiet, ask for the second floor, it was much quiter and the bakery smelled amazing.
