Diner Reviews
  • "The wait staff is very busy, and the food runners don't help the way they should. My side dish never came. My entree plate was almost given to the next table. I was told the restaurant was closing so I had to pay my bill before my dessert even arrived. The shrimp and low country grit was disappointing. The grits were mushy in spots and undercooked in others. The bacon wrapped dates were hard and overwhelmed with balsamic vinegar. The restaurant has long waits for service and it's loud."

  • "I'm not from the area, but have dined here twice. The food here is fantastic. Mostly locally sourced, but if not it comes from sustainable sources. Nice wine list, great cocktails. I'll be back sometime!"

  • "One of the best restaurants in DC. The food is excellent, as is the service. We went on a Monday night in the summer, and it was packed. Highly recommended."

  • "Founding Farmers is known as place that serves classic American food, and they certainly do. I had the fried green tomatoes, roast chicken, boiled potatoes and green beans. It was all fresh, excellently cooked and very traditional. I enjoyed the meal a lot, but this is not a place you would go to for complex or exotic flavors. The ale they had on tap was good, too. Only downside is that it was totally mobbed--and on a Monday night! Although I had reservations, there was a long wait for the table. It's quite noisy, although not in an unpleasant way--more active and lively. So worth doing for simple, well-done American food, but be prepared to wait."

  • "The food is delicious! Great service. Local beers were a treat to sample. Overall experience was awesome."

  • "We were not made to feel welcome upon entering the restaurant. We didn't feel they cared one way or the other if we were there or not. Defines were very good the food was hit and miss. I ordered a starter salad and it came the same time as on entree. I had the pot roast which was just ok. Good size portion just not to my taste. Service was good bit definitely not over the top. The restaurant is a solid 3."

  • "This is one of my absolute favorite places in DC, same with the majority of my friends in the DC Metro area. On this particular occasion, our group's server was top-notch. We appreciated all of his attention to detail and the great recommendations he gave us, encouraging us to branch out from our normal entrees. Can't say enough good things about this place. Will be back soon."

  • "I've never ordered something at FF that I didn't love. The menu has something for every taste and craving. I've discovered though that it's best for small parties and for lunch. At dinner time, even with a reservation, you mind find yourself waiting to be seated and it's often PACKED, and the upstairs dining room and the downstairs waiting area (I can't speak of the bar area) are uncomfortably hot. Also, apparently, the kitchen tends to run out of things on Sunday nights. Stick to lunch and you'll have a better experience."

  • "The menu here is good. However, the execution is terrible. For instance, our goat cheese ravioli came out luke warm while the squash and chicken that were in the center of the plate was hot. My apple pie came out luke warm as well. When asked for it to be reheated, it was stuck back in the oven and came back out chewy and burnt tasting. The hostess staff do not know what they are doing. Everything seems very unorganized, like the restaurant opened 2 weeks ago or something."

  • "Some of our food was very good...like fried green tomatoes and shrimp. Goat cheese ravioli and fried chicken were not so good."

  • "Any restaurant that has Popcorn of the Day as an appetizer, and a meatloaf with no meat is tops on my list. DELICIOUS! and thank you for being a prize within our vacation to DC."

  • "We were referred to Founding Farmers by friends who recently moved from the city. They recommended "if there is only one restaurant you seek out during your visit to DC, Founding Farmers is where to go." We were not disappointed. The soup and bread with brie for starters were excellent. We had the crab cakes and rotisserie chicken - both very good. Waiter was attentive and made excellent recommendations - including what to avoid with food allergies. The only disappointment was no chocolate dessert option for someone with egg allergy. We were a little early for our reservation, but wait was hardly long enough to get a drink at the bar!"

  • "After many failed attempts, I finally got a chance to eat here. Food and service were both awesome! We had the goat cheese burger with salted watermelon, chicken & waffles with brocolini and fried green tomatoes. Prices were about $15/entrée. Server was attentive and enthusiastic. Will definitely return as they have a lot of other items on the menu I would like to try."

  • "I came from Philly to have brunch here for my partners birthday. I assumed brunch was served all day. My reservations was at 2:15. Brunch ended at 2:00pm. My partner and I left because she really wanted brunch so we went elsewhere. I am sure the food there is lovely (per a DC resident recommending it), but I came there for brunch only to be 15 minutes too late."

  • "I went to Founding Farmers for brunch with a friend. The restaurant was packed and we ended up having to wait about 10 min to be seated despite having a reservation. However, the restaurant was packed for good reason - the food is AMAZING. And very reasonably priced. I had the founders' breakfast and my friend and I split the skillet cornbread, and everything was fantastic. I will absolutely be returning!"

  • "I had heard good things about this restaurant. It was ok, food was good not great and the service wasn't that good. Slow waitress and she never came back to ask if we needed refills on our drinks, took forever to check on our food. Food wasn't anything special. You make a reservation and they tell you it might be "around" that time. I think this place is way over-rated. Best thing about it was the bar and the bartender."

  • "Very disappointed - heard this was a hot place for brunch. Disorganized check-in (despite reservation and plenty of empty tables). Staff and server were very unfriendly, seemed to only be going through the motions, no one smiled or was friendly. Breakfast items might be reasonably priced, but the lunch items are overpriced. Food was highly overrated - greasy eggs, only offered a coffee refill after we had settled up our bill. I have had much better food at small local greasy spoon diners, for a fraction of the cost. Not sure what all the hype is all about, it isn't worth it."

  • "I had the strawberries and cream stuffed french toast with egg whites and grits. My friend had the strawberries and cream waffles with hash browns and grits. Everything was amazing! The french toast was so tasty and the grits were very creamy. We had beignets to start with. They are out of this world! What a treat. We have already planned our return."

  • "It was an average brunch spot. I think it is over hyped for what it is. The prices are very reasonable; however, it's nothing extraordinary."

  • "Always worry when going to a place this is close to closing time, but FF didn't make me feel that way at all. Seated, order taken, food prepared and delivered as if closing was still hours away. No rushing! And the food tasted as great as if it wasn't time for the kitchen to close as well. Fried green tomatoes, bacon lollipops (what a concept!), and chicken and waffles, great way to close out the day!"

  • "Usually when I drop $150 on dinner and wine I'd like to be able to hear my table mates without them having to yell over the ambient noise levels. That being said, it was delicious food and good service. So good that sometimes I felt that wait staff were too anxious to take plates away. All in all a good trip."

  • "Some of the best food I've ever had - really creative menu."

  • "great variety on the menu. Nora was energetic and hustled, she knew the menu and interacted well. SO many great things. I had the land and sea with the 8 oz filet, a little more medium well than medium (requested), but so good, crab cake was more crab than filler, vegetables, potatoes all good, dessert delicious, drinks were tasty and appys were fun. Most go again!"

  • "I had a great time at Founding Farmers. I hate that there is not much room for flexibility with size and time. However, I guess that can be a good thing too. I had the FF Cheeseburger and it was pretty good. I will definitely be back."

  • "The scene is always frenetic. Love the beer selection and menu options for all. My crab cakes were outstanding. My guests were not as pleased with their main course choices. The vegetarian options are interesting and creative."

  • "Family of four had 4 quasi-designer burgers (Avocado? Bleu cheese?), fries, and soft drinks for dinner -- bill was $90. $90! I can have a lot better meals, in nicer places, for $22.50/person."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "I love this restaurant but it is very load there. The food is very good, I have loved everything I have ever had there. I have been there several times since its close to my office. The waitress forgot my side dish in my to-go order, which I didn't notice until I had already left. and she gave one person chips instead of the French fries he asked for. Our reservation was for 2pm, so it wasn't like we were there at the lunch rush."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "I have been to lunch here three times now. I really like the place and the food is reasonably priced and very good to excellent. However the service is slow. There is a long lag time between ordering beverages and cocktails and receiving them. Every beverage, every time. And the food takes a little too long. If you are not in a hurry it is fine but for most people, lunch is a work break and you need to pick up the pace. Servers are friendly but need a little more sense of urgency and a little better reading of the guests. No manager presence to speak of. No manager has ever stopped by my table to check on me. That said, I would return and recommend Founding a Farmers for a fun and delicious meal."

  • "This is the second time I have been to Founding Farmers on a special occasion, with a reservation (husband's birthday and friend getting married). Both times, I was asked if this is a special occasion, and if so, did I have any requests. Both times I requested a nice table upstairs (away from the bar) that was quiet, and both times I was seated in the loud and busy bar area. I don’t understand what the point of asking is, if they are just going to seat us where the first open table is, and treat us like walk-in customers off the street. I won’t be coming here for a special occasion again."

  • "My wife got the prime rib, good but on par with most places in the area. I ordered pork chops, they were good but a bit disappointing. The quality & flavor was below what I've come to expect. The order had 2 chops instead of 1 thick chop. They were covered with brown onion gravy. The gravy overpowered the pork. It was needed as the chops were dry. Wonderful appetizer, prosciutto & figs on flatbread with balsamic vinegar. The dessert was excellent, we had the beignets. My wife ordered a vodka drink with cantaloupe and cucumber that was very refreshing. I had a gin and tonic that was made correctly. The service was excellent. The waiter went out of her way to ensure that the chocolate sauce was fair trade when my inquired."
