Diner Reviews
  • "I have never been able to catezgorize a restaurant as a must eat until now, do not walk, do not run, but find a cab and speed to this restaurant! The service exceeds a 5 star level, the food is perfection, you will need a reservation ( open table saved us a 2 hour wait list ) and you must save room for dessert. I travel weekly, I find desserts too complex or expensive, but here a 20 minute forewarned wait for what I would call the perfect dessert was the best decision I've ever made in my life. I chose to top it off with a vanilla milk shake, again a wise decision. After finding myself over stuffed I was happy to learn they will package both to go to your hotel. Don't hesitate, I am picky, and you need to jump at a chance to eat here!"

  • " Seems like there is always a wait even when you have a reservation, but it was totally worth it! We had the sliders, chicken wings, and deviled eggs for appetizers. I had the pot roast for my main course. It was astounding! The prices were very reasonable for a high end restaurant and the portions are huge. It is definitely loud and crowded but the servers were attentive and very nice. I don't drink but it looked like the bar was very busy and had a nice vibe. but I cannot say anything about their drinks since I didn't try them. If you love good food but want a quieter experience, I would think week nights are more appropriate. I cannot recommend this place enough."

  • "We had visited the Founding Farmers in MoCo, but this was our first trip to the District restaurant. My daughter and I loved it. We had the brie and apple farm bread, then she had the chicken pot pie and I enjoyed the shrimp and grits. We were both so glad that we saved room for the beignets! Our server, Nora, was pleasant and attentive, and the servers who brought the food from the kitchen were great as well. I will definitely plan on another visit."

  • "Great and awesome clean food. Organic and freshly made right there in the restaurant every morning. The food tastes spectacular."

  • "This restaurant has amazing food that is all locally grown ans made fresh everyday! Delicous-a must try."

  • "The first time we went to Founding Farmers, we had a good, but not great experience. Good food, good drinks, but the service was a little off. After I wrote my review, I was contacted by Founding Farmers who wanted another shot at making it right. I was VERY impressed with their desire to get better and their responsiveness to their customers. We gave them a second shot and it was totally worth it. The service was spot on, the food was really good and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. We actually needed to eat early (4:30 reservation) so we expected a quiet restaurant....but we were totally wrong. The place was hoppin! It is great to have an option like Founding Farmers where you can have a vibrant atmosphere at any time"

  • "I found Founding Farmers on a trip to DC a few years ago. Since then, anytime I'm in town, I try to stop by. The food quality seems to have declined... The whole experience reminded me of a glorified cheesecake factory."

  • "This was the third time that I have visited this restaurant . As usual, seating was timely, service was great. Our dishes were amazing! I personally had Goat cheese Raviollis, oMG, they were delicious. The only bad part, was we had no room for dessert !"

  • "We felt that some of the food we selected wasn't as good as we had experienced in the past. (multiple visits for breakfast) The eggs benedict florentine wasn't up to par and the grits were not warm enough. The eggs benedict with crab was superb and the beignets were terrific. Cappuccino was excellent."

  • "Had a fantastic brunch with out of town family, they were very impressed with Founding Farmers' food, ambiance and service. One of our party left their credit card and one of the managers found my phone number to call me and make sure we got it back."

  • "Friendly, great service and the food is excellent."

  • "Delicious food, wonderful service, we would definitely go back! The only thing we would improve is the tables are a bit too close together and conversations of the table next to us were a bit intrusive."

  • "I had been to Founding Farmers for lunch but took my husband and niece this time. The evening got off to a bad start as we were seated next to the bar and we were jostled and it was very loud. My husband's meal came cold (prime rib) and with the wrong elements of the meal. It was sent back and took almost 24 minutes to return. When it returned it had been microwaved and was still cold. They took the price of that entree off of the check but we determined that we will not return to the restaurant."

  • "So yummy, make a reservation in advance to avoid the lines! Cornbread is a must"

  • "If you are dining for brunch you must try the Cream filled French Toast. To Die For. Menu is amazing and service very attentive and knowledgable. Will return again when next in DC. Make a reservation as it seemed full all the time."

  • "Air condition was not working. Upper level was HOT. Sitting at a group table on the end was not enjoyable. The salad was made with iceberg lettuce. I missed that detail on the menue and truely regretted my selection. Redvelvet cake was really yummy."

  • "This is my second time here and I think that Founding Farmers is really hit or miss. The appetizers were very good, the drinks were good but the main meal was too salty for me, the meat loaf. I am sure other people might not think that it was salty but at there really is no need to salt the food if there are salt shakers on the table. I think they can do better."

  • "We have traveled to DC twice this year and have had dinner both times at Founding Farmers. The food and service have been great. I would recommend making reservations so you don't have to wait. Reservations are easy to make on the FF website. We will eat here again when we travel back to DC."

  • "Was looking for a place to eat close to GW. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety & ambience. The place was contemporary but casual and comfortable. We enjoyed our dinners immensely and were thrilled with the farm to table culture. Definitely will go there again."

  • "The menu was filled with several eclectic cchoices so it is nice for those dining with several people with varying tastes. I enjoyed the whole quality foods. The service was a bit slow but food makes it worth the wait. Make reservations several days or weeks in advance to dine during peak times. We had a wonderful server who anticipated all our needs."

  • "Was worth having a reservation. The food is excellent, and the service was top rate. Was able to come, eat, pay within an hour. Perfect for lunch."

  • "As usual I was very impressed with the food service at the restaurant. One of my favorite places in DC! Carrot cake pancakes rocked!"

  • "We had a party of 10, which included 4 kids under the age of 9. The food was simply amazing. No one had food that they didn't rant and rave about. I had the pot roast, a whopping $16. It was to die for. Omg and eat the skillet cornbread. It is a cross between cornbread and angel food cake. Wow. Service was outstanding. Ask for Jane. The popcorn of the day was fun for the kids."

  • "The wait staff and dining room staff were excellent. The food was interesting and delicious. Our initial experience with the front of house staff was less than ideal. We arrived about two minutes ahead of our reservation time and the hostess told us she would seat us "closer to our reservation time". If she had said she would seat us in a few minutes or as soon as our table was ready, that would have been fine, but her phrasing was frankly rather annoying. My only other complaint is that there are no bike racks to be found near the entrance to the restaurant, and since its philosophy emphasizes its environmentally friendly nature, this was a shame."

  • "Took my wife here for a birthday celebration. Food was as great as everyone told us. Nice atmosphere. Cons-server was slow and brought us the wrong dessert. The restaurant was hot making it uncomfortable and difficult to enjoy the great food."

  • "There are times when I LOVE Founding Farmers...the deviled eggs, the flatbreads, the chicken and waffles, the homemade sodas. But after having dined there for lunch about 10 times this past year, I have to say that the menu is really hit or miss. I recommend ordering what you KNOW you'll like, or what comes recommended by a friend. Their sandwiches are meh, with chunks of gristle (in the Turkey and Gruyere sandwich), barely discernible flavor and wayyy too much bread. Their fish entrees have been quite plain, and not very fresh. And their sides are either oily or tiny ($4 for 4 small cubes of watermelon? Really?)."

  • "I've dined at Founding Farmers for lunch and dinner for business and pleasure and at all times, this place is awesome. The restaurant is both elegant and rustic with a cool sort of sustainability vibe to it with beautiful steel walls and reclaimed wood. The food is nourishing and delicious. I love the chicken and waffles and fresh lemonade but there's lots to choose from. They have a wonderfully varied menu which will likely be appealing to most palates. Believe the hype, this place is worth trying!"

  • "We had a waitress that just started 2 months ago and while she was a little slow, she did an overall good job. Food was fabulous!"
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "Our first meal here was good. So we returned and the chicken was dry, the ham and peas Mac and cheese was unremarkable and bland, the waitress in training could not help with any recommendations, and the drink she raid would be sweet was very bitter. If you go, stay safe with a burger and the corn bread. Also, very noisy! Very disappointing second visit."

  • "Have been there 2 days in a row...would go third! Tried the lobster Mac and the steak and enchiladas. Both great!"

  • "Whether sustainability is your thing or not, everything here is fresh and outstanding! Went with a group and all meals were exceptional. From the fabulous fried green tomatoes to the delectable beignets ( a must), this place is a treasure. I cannot wait to go again! Make reservations, it's very popular with the DC crowd. Heard the brunch was amazing. Next visit I am trying for brunch."

  • "As a person with food allergies who cannot eat gluten or dairy the servers made every effort to help me find a delicious meal. The restraunt has a safe foods list and the servers know their menus. Their knowledge and willingness to accommodate any needs, from changing mashed potatoes to vegan, to leaving gravies off the plate if they were able, made for an easy selection. They were polite and non judgmental and I will defiantly eat there again. The food was perfectly cooked, possessing a fresh clean effect that made eating truly enjoyable."

  • "Got a recommendation from a Twitter friend. Family of 4 (14 year old plus 11 year old) all loved it. Fantastic kids custom sodas and a great drink menu for Mom and Dad! Food choices plentiful and everyone really enjoyed it. Only regret was that we didn't have any time to eat there again."

  • "A true gem in DC. First restaurant I've ever been that (finally) has fresh squeezed juices as alternative to soft drinks. Food was delicious and service was spectacular."

  • "You never want to only be known as a restaurant for special occasions, but that's why I was there Sunday evening and it could not have been better...my reservation was acknowledged and we were seated within 30 seconds of arrival..the waitress was great, very knowledgable and more importantly gave us time to decide...the food came out perfect, it was hot, it was seasoned correctly and eveyone at our table had a very good meal...we never seem to make it to dessert, but this time after watching all of the desserts come out of the kitchen, we split one, which was excellent.. all in all a great sunday night experience."

  • "I have been here many times, and the food is always a outstanding. I will say the noise level is to loud on the main dining room floor. We had a party of 12, and there was another party of 8 close by. The place was packed on a Sunday night, and it was too loud for a meaningful conversation."
