  • Bad farewell lunch

I came here w/ 3 other coworker's for a "farewell breakfast" since I was leaving to go to a new job. We got there about 9:30am & were one of the first groups in our section. Man oh man, the service was terrible! The waitress looked like she was a freshman in college & didn't know what the hell was going on. She never stopped to check on our table, refill our waters, or ask us if we needed anything. We waited well over an hour for our food - ridiculous! They couldn't make an omelet or scramble eggs which was beyond weird to us; we were told they really can't modify foods off the menu. ABSURD! The grits looked like cottage cheese..gross! The manager ended up comping the whole meal. The only thing I would recommend was the beignets.

I made reservations, and I'm glad I did! For those without a reservation, the wait was 1 1/2 hours. I only waited a few minutes while they prepared our table. My cousin is wheat intolerant, and they had a gluten-free cheat sheet which helped immensely! The service was impeccable, and the wait staff friendly and so fun! Can't wait to go back!

I had t been to Founding Farmers for a while and had forgotten how good it is. We had stopped going because it was just so hard to get a reservation and the wait was ridiculous. However, I have to admit, making a reservation in advance is worth it. Lunch was wonderful. Everything was fresh and the food was definitely not the ordinary lunch menu.

  • Popular but overhyped

The food was good but nothing special, which was surprising given its popularity. We made a reservation for a Monday at 9pm - and it's good we did, the wait when we arrived was an hour & a half. Along with many others there, we were seated about 15 late. The restaurant was extremely noisy and the close quarters made a conversation difficult. Food was average - roasted tomato soup was delicious, pesto bread good but short on pesto. I specified medium well on my avocado bacon burger & it came out medium rare; they took it back without complaint but I had to wait for another 15 minutes. Burger was average. Not many vegetable choices, especially considering their advertising as a farm restaurant. Decent, but definitely not with the hype.

Took daughter & her boyfriend there. It was on a Sunday night, very busy for 6:30 and noisy. The item I requested was not available. I do wish they had just said in the beginning this and this are not available tonight because by the time they server came back and we were ready to order you have in your mind that you really want that item and then you have to rethink. Not a big deal I know but it just would have made it easier.

Visited early on a Sunday evening. The place was packed, per usual. Sat upstairs for the first time. It is much quieter up there. Downstairs gets a bit noisy and crowded sometimes (partly because people circle the bar like vultures waiting for an open seat). The food was excellent. Started with bacon-wrapped dates, which were awesome. An entree steak was cooked perfectly - texture and flavor were wonderful for a cheaper cut. Chicken in enchiladas was a bit dry. Burger was outstanding. Squash ravioli was delicious. Portions are fit for humans. Cocktails were well crafted, if a bit pricey ($12 for a John Daly). Service was top notch. Good team effort. Will keep visiting until I've tried the whole menu.

I was underwhelmed. The waiting list and line was unbelievable! We made reservations so were able to be seated fairly quickly. We chose Founding Farmers based on the reputation of the food...however, it was average (I ordered a prime rib, my wife, the crab cakes). Not worth the price or hassle...and we left disappointed to some degree.

Had heard of it from a family member and decided to give it a try before a concert at DAR Constitution Hall. Out server knew the menu and answered all of our questions offering excellent suggestions. Everything we saw being delivered to diners looked amazing. We had an appetizer with bread, home made chips and 4 dips that was delicious. The meatloaf was perfect comfort food. My dinner companion had the post roast and loved it. And we split a bottle of organic wine that was reasonably priced and very good. We were too stuffed for dessert, perhaps our next visit.

The rave reviews, along with a good vegetarian and omnivore menu selection, led me to make reservations here during our 48 hour stay in DC. We were so glad we did. Started with the Brie/Onion Jam/Apple farm bread - delish! Shared a house salad with husband, blue cheese was a good quality & lettuce was fresh. For entrees I had the vegetarian meatloaf/vegan mash potato/grilled broccolini and it was really very good. My husband, who was enjoying an 8 oz filet, tried a bit of my entree and liked it as well. A gem of a restaurant - wish their was one nearer to my home town, would be a once a week place for sure! Good beer and cocktail options as well.

We loved Founding Farmers. Everything we had was very fresh and perfectly cooked. I highly recommend the skillet cornbread appetizer. Our server was excellent, very friendly and on top of things. The atmosphere was fairly loud; it was very busy when we were there, but we could still hear each other. This is maybe not the place for an intimate meal together. But this is a place to definitely visit and enjoy the fantastic food.

I'm in DC for a two week vacation with my family, coming from the SF Bay Area in CA. We had such a great experience that I was quick to make a reservation for the second week of our trip. The ham & cheese Mac & cheese was the big hit with my family. The adults loved the Brie bread appetizers. But the sodas were very different and not as big of a hit with the kids--adults liked them. Waiter was perfect, thank you, Colton!

Always a good meal at FF. I strongly encourage making reservations. This place is full from 5:00 pm until closing. I don't think their mac 'n cheese is any good. Took almost 15 minutes to get seated after arriving at our reservation time. That is understandable at prime time on a Thursday evening but we were then seated at the table right where we were waiting which was empty the entire time we were waiting. It was a booth closest to the door and waiting area and across from the bar. There is a lot of energy for the after work crowd but almost impossible for the diners close by to have a conversation. Perhaps the experience upstairs would have been different. I ordered the chicken for an entrée. It was dry and not much better than a barbecue chicken prepared at a supermarket.

Lively Thursday evening summer crowd; food was good. Service was enthusiastic but incredibly rushed throughout the entire meal, despite our telling server that our group of four had not seen each other for almost two years. Staff even tried to clear plates prematurely. Restaurant at that point was not full. It was certainly not conducive to leisurely dining.

There were several fish of the day selections - I chose trout with the meneuire style preparation - excellent, particularly when paired with the watermelon salad. The only negative is the noise level - quite high - and it's one of those restaurants that irritatingly won't seat you until your party is "complete" even if it's just a table for two.

I'd heard a lot of good things about this resteraunt and was excited to go but from the second we walked through the door it was a let down. No one was friendly or apologetic about their sluggish pace at seating people with reservations at the busy lunch rush. Then the waiter did not even great us in a friendly manner. The food was just okay. The real problem with this resteraunt was since it has been hyped up so much not living up to its expectations was very dissapointing.

Having heard such a hype about this restaurant, we tried it on a weekday, during the slow period, since it usually has overwhelming crowds. Disappointed with both food and service. Don't want to base a negative review on just one visit so will try to temper my remarks. We tried the highly touted cornbread, which was okay, but super sweet and a bit soggy. It was more similar to cake, didn't have the good texture associated with using stone ground cornmeal, which they didn't use. Had a vegetarian entree, which was tasteless and overly salted. One of us had a cheeseburger, which was okay but not as good as Five Guys. I felt the service was a bit condescending. All the DC hipsters love this place so might give it another try.
