Diner Reviews
  • "Great food but wished they had a better way of opening for brunch on the weekend. We were in a very large group of 8:45am reservations on a Saturday waiting for the doors to open at 9am. There has to be a better way to start the morning... perhaps have several hostesses to report to once the doors opened and the crowd all tried to head for the front desk. Once we were seated, the food and service was good."

  • "Founding Farmers brunch is INSANE! So, so, GOOD. Drink prices are expensive, but we opted for one of their house-made sodas (it was delicious and cheap!) and water to keep costs down. Turns out that wasn't really necessary b/c the dishes themselves were reasonably priced and outstanding. Do yourself a favor & get the chicken & waffles. Just do it. Also recommend exploring their smaller or shared plates. We had the banana fluffer nutters, so much fun & really good. I knew brunch would be crowded, so I made reservations about a week before, and had plenty of options. Come Sunday morning, the place was slammed. The couple before us was told the wait was 1.5hrs, yikes! But with the res we were seated in a couple mins. Absolutely recommend!"

  • "We were in DC to see grandchildren at GW and we stayed in a hotel across the street. This restaurant was only close but also very good! Nice staff and since they make everything fresh, it was great to have light fares. Maryland crab cakes were wonderful!"

  • "I had dined here in the past and thought that this would be a great place for my boyfriend and I to have a date night while we visited DC for the weekend. Everything about our experience was excellent EXCEPT that once we arrived for our reservation at 9:45pm we were made to wait until 10:15pm to be seated. This irked me a little bit because, having a reservation, one would assume that you would be seated at your reservation time. In this case there was no "open table" waiting for us when we arrived. Once seated the service, food, and experience was exceptional."

  • "My husband and I were celebrating our 17th year anniversary on Sunday. We had a great time at your restaurant. We were seated immediately upon arrival."

  • "My friends and I have been wanting to visit Founding Farmers for ages and we finally did so last weekend. It did not disappoint! There is so much to choose from on the menu and everything looks so amazing! We wish we had gotten there a tad earlier because the breakfast menu looks incredible (seems like it ends by 2 pm on Sundays). We had the fried green tomatoes, chicken and waffles platter and the beignets- all were absolutely delicious and came in proper portions. Founding Farmers also has a unique drink menu so ensure you experience Founding Farmers from the very first sip to the last bite. We had so much fun and we highly recommended this DC treasure."

  • "On the plus side, Ben, our waiter, was very attentive and friendly. On the minus side, the green beans were undercooked."

  • "The hostess checked us in 20 min early for our reservation and then forgot about us and seated everyone without reservations before us. Never apologized and wouldn't have noticed except we asked. All three hostess girls we not friendly or helpful or even nice. Our waitress was very good and helped to save the experience."

  • "Nice restaurant. I was there for breakfast on a Sunday, during Cherry Blossom season, so needless to say it was crowded. I had a reservation I was late for and that was not a big deal. We were seated pretty quickly considering the line for those without a reservation. Food was good, and fresh. Well prepared. It was breakfast, so I can't say it was the best meal I ever had but I would definitely come back for lunch or dinner. All ingredients are natural and made from scratch. Our waiter got sidetracked and did not attend to us much but we didn't really need that anyway. Thumbs up! Make a reservation, don't be late!"

  • "Food was good. Crowded but service was very good. Had a reservation but still needed to wait 20 min to be seated. Would definitely return on my next trip to DC.m"

  • "Very good farm fresh food. Great waiter after a lousy checking experience. Had lots of great sandwiches and hot dogs. The Mac and cheese expert cleaned his plate. We had beignets for dessert and fought over them. Worth the splurge!"

  • "Great meal and service. We were there on a Friday night at 7:00pm and it was very busy. Reservations are a must."

  • "Even though we had a reservation, we ended up waiting 30 minutes for a table. I believe there was a mix up, but it's difficult if you are meeting people. The restaurant ended up giving us free appetizers to make up for the wait."

  • "Loved Founding Farmers! a TRUE "farm to table" restaurant with great drink menu, incredible food, and great service and atmosphere! And the prices were shockingly reasonable, especially for D.C.! HIGHY RECOMMEND!"

  • "Founding Farmers is my favorite restaurant in D.C. The service is fantastic as well as their food. I also like how they do their beer. You choose what type you want e.g. IPA, Pale Ale, Lager and all of them are rotating weekly. Every beer they've had has been great. I brought my parents here who were visiting from out of town and they loved it."

  • "The service was solid, the food selection was substantial, the quality was way above average, and the taste was great. However, the sound on the bottom floor was terrible; it was very loud. Part of this was due to a table of boisterous women; even the staff were startled by the intensity of the volume on one occasion!"

  • "I've been to Founding Farmers a few times before, and I've enjoyed their breakfast every time! This time, I brought a friend from out of town who is a pretty strict vegan, and she loved the food as well. I had the Founding Farmers breakfast with bacon, English muffin and lots of coffee - yum! Thanks, and I'll be back :)"

  • "The service was slow, we were not seated right away even tho' we had reservations. Food was not cooked to order and was nothing special. Restaurant is way over rated."

  • "We loved this place. Food was excellent. Lots of different choices from home cooking to healthy. We would definitely return and have recommended it already."

  • "Great food, but our server was a bit distracted and we had to wait a while for him to take our order. We also had to ask the food runners for extra silverware because there was only one set on the table."

  • "After taking our drink orders (iced tea and a mixed drink), we didn't see our waiter return to our table for 45 minutes, so we decided to cancel our order with the manager and head to another restaurant in the area (West End Bistro). At Founding Farmers, the noise level was unbearable (we were seated next to the bar on the first floor) and the restaurant's floors and tables were dirty because of how many people were coming in and out. I made reservations two weeks prior to trying to dine at the restaurant, and I was so utterly disappointed!"

  • "Excellent food and service - each time I have been there. It is very popular so expect a wait. It is best to make reservations - you will get in close to your reservation time. Very crowded but it is DC and that is part of this restaurants experience. DID I DAY THE FOOD IS EXCEPTIONAL?? Once seated the service is impeccable and fast."

  • "Founding Farmers is always great. Had group of 3 for late lunch at 3pm on Satuday. Amazing set of three pre-prohibition drinks, and three people in our group had chicken and waffles, burger, and the strip steak with enchiladas, respectively. Amazing food, 10/10 great service. It was mobbed for 3 pm on a weekend, and with reservations we still had to wait 20 minutes. The only problem was that many people were turned away, but there were open tables-this was a hostess issue though, not a service issue. Was the highlight for my family visit from out of town, one said it was almost as good as seeing the cherry blossoms themselves."

  • "Kory, our server, made the dining experience really great! He was attentive, hilarious and had great knowledge of the menu! Delicious dinner, Founding Farmer has a great menu and lots of different options for all!"

  • "We waited one hour for a table even though we had a 9pm reservation. Food was average at best. Disappointing was the overpriced deviled eggs for $14, which looked great but under seasoned."

  • "We made a reservation at 1930 on a saturday. Thank god we did because when we arrived walk ins were being given a 4 hr wait! Food was great, portions are large so keep that in mind. Highlights of the evening were the cornbread, mussels as a starter, plank salmon and roasted chicken. They also make their own lemon soda (sprite) which is really good and refreshing. Ambience is ok i would enjoy more separate ambiences for a more private less cafeteria feel. Service was impeccable. The bill was aprox 150 usd for 5 of us."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of DC. Great service, excellent food, interesting eco-friendly space -- and moderately priced for it all. Definitely a place to take out of town guests (and in-town friends). I've never had a bad experience there. A very busy place, be sure to get your reservation in early."

  • "I have been to Founding Father 5 times. The food always great, the execution of even simple items excellent. However, it is annoying that even with a reservation you almost always have to wait- they clearly overbook!"

  • "Food was good, but really busy on weekends. Had to wait 20 minutes to be seated with a reservation."

  • "The menu was so alluring. I could have ordered almost anything, it all sounded scrumptious! The shrimp and grits was not anything like I pictured it, but it still was delectable. Everything is brought in fresh that day and our server happily explained the restaurant concept and menu. If I lived within an hour of Founding Farmer's I'd be a regular. But alas, I live 7 hours away."

  • "We go to FF at least once when we visit DC. The food and service have remained consistently good, and we will be back next time we're in the District. Definitely make a reservation, you could have a long wait without one."

  • "Maybe it was because I just finished running the Rock and Roll marathon but every thing that came out of the kitchen (including their lemon aid) was AMAZING! The memory that lingers in my mind and on my tastebuds is the beniettes that we devoured for dessert. The 6 beniettes came with three dipping sauces that enhanced the warm and light breading: hot chocolate fudge, sea salt carmel, and raspberry puree. Please don't miss the opportunity to have a little heaven at the end of your meal."

  • "Great food and service! May pass on the bacon lollipops next time, and they don't give free refills for iced tea- but excellent food overall!"

  • "We had a great time at Founding Farmers! We had reservations at 5:30 but wanted out friend to joing us. When we got to the restaurant we told them that we would have 3 instead of 2. They said when he arrived to let them know. We pushed out our reservation to 6 p.m. We were in at 6:10, got a great table, great server, great food!!!! Unbelievable food!!!!!! Nothing like it. I had the gnouchi and sausage! Nothing like it.....it was so awesome! Our server was friendly and very helpful, cheery and personable. We sat at the bar when we first got there. The bartender notice 2 chairs opening up so he turned towards me and told me, we were already on our way over to the chairs but he was very fun! Overall a very positive fun experience!"

  • "The food is delicious and the bar program is one of the best I've seen in town but the service (or total lack thereof) is exceptionally bad. Every time I've been, and this last time was certainly not an exception, the servers and bartenders treat you as if they're upset you stopped by. Eye rolling, flat out ignoring, extremely snarky responses to everything is par for the course here. Again, credit where credit's due and the food and drink are great, but there are plenty of other comparable options with good service."
