Diner Reviews
  • "Brunch food was good, but not as good as the dinner menu. Restaurant is in an old house and very unique. Great ambience. Server was having an off day I think - she forgot to bring extra bacon (we asked twice) and she also spilled a mimosa partially on one of our group (she apologized, but I think a free beverage or discount would have been nice)"

  • "After being cooped up all winter my wife and I decided to celebrate the nice weather. Forepaugh's was our choice and for our evening out in provided a very pleasant dining experience. The ambiance was restful and romantic, the service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was interesting and pleasant. I would not say the food was outstanding however, the tastes that the chef had blended into the foods were very interesting and pleasant."

  • "This was a fantastic discovery. I'd heard about the restaurant from a few fellow foodies and can honestly say this is my new favorite restaurant in the Twin Cities. The Victorian Mansion is to die for and our host and server encouraged us to explore all 3 floors. The mansion has many smaller rooms - several suitable for groups and small meetings - it was quiet - no need to shout to be heard. The service was exquisite. Our server was very knowledgeable and made several great suggestions. We ordered the smashed beet salad, blackened scallops, a New York Strip and the walleye. Everything was beyond delicious and the presentation was artistry in and of itself; so much so that I posted photos on Facebook. I will definitely be back."

  • "We were excited to try Forepaugh's. We rarely get to go out in St. Paul and had the opportunity to get dressed up for a nice night out on the town. The mansion is gorgeous and they invite you to wander around and check out all of the rooms. Our server was attentive and well versed in the menu and the host was very inviting. Signature drinks were great! I had a grape martini and my husband had an italian one. Our meals were very good but it seemed to take a little longer than I would have expected even for a high-end restaurant. We were in no hurry, so that was OK with us, but if you had plans after dinner plan for a little extra time at the restaurant. Overall loved the experience and will be back!"

  • "The Victorian house that Forepaugh's is located in is beautiful. The ambiance of the restaurant is wonderful. The food was well prepared, and the wait staff was fabulous!"

  • "The restaurant was very quit, clean, showed class, elegance, chic and romantic with a lil old fashion twist. We loved the place. Unfortunately, our meals weren't as fantastic as the service. The Host/Manager, John and our server Nick were Absolutely Fantastic. Thier service was Superb and maybe the best service we've ever recieved. It felt, without a doubt, very genuine and professional. 5 Stars for service. Because of that, we will surely return to Forepaugh's. Thanks TJ."

  • "I had brunch with a friend. The food and service was great. The only thing I would fix would be the rails on the stairs."

  • "Inside of an old mansion, Forepaugh has a lot charm. Very romantic. One Minnesota's best! The staff is fantastic and the food is wonderful."

  • "Craving beef wellington, chose Forepaugh's since it is hard to find on menus locally. The appetizer and salad were very good, but I have to say that I was disappointed with the wellington. The pastry crust was bordering on burnt (well beyond a golden brown color) which detracted from a pleasing taste. At that price I would have expected better."

  • "The only, tiny, complaint would be that it took a long time between our appetizer and the main dish. So long, that the waitress asked her manager to speak to the kitchen. They gave us free dessert. It didn't bother me as much as my husband, I rather enjoyed the leisurely pace since we had nowhere else to be."

  • "Great food - just not enough of it ! For the price I expected to at least get filled."

  • "Everything was really great. The only reason I marked service a 4 rather than a 5 is because we were forgotten about at the end when it came time to get our check. We needed to leave for a show, which the waitress knew, and the delay in getting our check made it so that we barely got to the theatre before the 1st act started. That was truly the ONLY thing I can complain about."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a fabulous romantic dinner together celebrating my birthday. We loved the friendly, comfortable atmosphere. The host encouraged us to explore as this was our first visit to Forepaugh's. Then we enjoyed a wonderful meal beginning with the deconstructed beet salad. This was a taste adventure! Onto the Beef Wellington and Salmon, both dishes were wonderful. Finally we splurged with dessert. Another deconstructed artistic delight, this time Bananas Foster. We already have our eye on what to try next time. We will return to Forepaugh's, we had a wonderful evening!"

  • "I didn't think Forpaugh's would be for me... since I am both thrifty and vegetarian. Without having been there I expected Forpaugh's to be way too upscale, stiff, and traditional-meaty for me. When my friends suggested it I was disappointed, but what a nice surprise-- the ambiance was friendly and fun, the Happy Hour prices were affordable, and the options included many non-meat items. I'll go back. The other nice thing is that you could even bring kids there-- very cool."

  • "Lobster and veal cheek on a plate should have been amazing!!! Unfortunately it was extremely bland! Nothing provided a wow factor other than the service."

  • "The food was fabulous. The ambiance was exceptional. The server was very pleasant and attentive. The problems seemed to be with the kitchen and not with the server. It took an exceedingly long time to get our food. We arrived about 6:30, and didn't leave until 9:15. For that reason I will think twice about going there again."

  • "Dinner on a Saturday night with a friend and two out-of-town guests. Later my guests wrote "The food was absolutely terrific -- honestly the best I've had in a long time -- and that house so beautiful." I agree. Food wonderful, service great, friendly staff, great ambiance. With two very modest bottles of wine and tip, the bill came to $300, which is expensive in my book...but, you do get what you pay for. Highly recommended for any special occasion."

  • "The service and ambiance are good, but the food quality was inconsistent. The appetizer was very tasty with a nice balance of flavors. The entree (beef wellington) was made with a tough cut of tenderloin and was somewhat one-dimensional. The service was good and the staff did offer to provide another entree. Overall, I don't believe the food is worth the price."

  • "Had family visiting and thought we would go somewhere not only a little more upscale, but unique, and thought we would try Forepaugh's. I am was so disappointed. My guests were very kind about it, but the fact that no one finished their food or even half of it, said it all. We were there for dinner on a Saturday, had appetizers, main courses and drinks. The food was too pricey to be that bad in my opinion. The old house was interesting. I had a Minnesota history buff with me, but they were pretty disappointed that all the old photos on the walls were fake, I guess people dressed up amd staged them. So I was kind of embarassed that I thought I was bringing them to this cool place, and it ended up being a lot of hype."

  • "Some of the food was spectacular, while some was of much lower quality. My daughter and I each ordered the Beef Wellington, medium, and in the end my daughter's was cooked medium well to well, while my steak was well on the ends and quite raw (not rare, not cooked, cold and raw) in the center. The filet cut was also suspect as the meat had quite a bit of stringy toughness to it. I could not send it back as our server did not revisit our table until twenty minutes after the food was served. To be fair, my family members did enjoy their meals, it was me who felt the food to be subpar. Overall, I was very surprised at this experience at Forepaugh's, as in the past we have always enjoyed ourselves and greatly enjoyed the food. An off night?"

  • "Wow. What a great evening with excellent service, the bartender, waitress, host, they are all wonderful, even the coat check person. The dinner: the Cupids cloud was very fun, a smart way to start the evening. We loved it, laughed. Each course was more creative & good than the previous; main course of filet mignon & lobster was generous. The wine pours were generous too, we had SPCO so we decided not to rush dessert and come back for a nightcap. The waitress presented each of us with a rose, normally only giving 1 to the female person in party but since we were a couple of dudes, she gave us both 1. It was a sweet gesture, classy operation. Came back, and they saved our dessert! Chef Donald is a highly skilled and bold chef. Kudos!"

  • "We enjoyed the six course dinner on the Valentine's Day menu with the wine pairings While the cotton candy featured as "Cupid's Cloud" was an unusual way to begin the meal, the balance of the meal was extraordinary."

  • "Forepaughs sometimes gets forgotten due to the newer and trendier restaurants in the Twin Cities. But make no mistake it is one of the best restaurants in the city. The mansion is gorgeous, the service, impeccable and the food is to die for."

  • "I've been aware of this restaurant for a couple of years, as my firm often uses it as a place to dine with our most coveted clients. However, I had never dined there personally. I'd heard nothing but good things about it but none of those reviews came close to doing the place justice. It far exceeded my expectations from start to finish. I was warmly welcomed by the hostess like a relative arriving from a long journey. A warm smile, a warm fire and a very warm and welcoming atmosphere was my first impression. The intimate setting of small tables, luxurious furnishings & quaint rooms was a very pleasant contrast to what the average restaurant, whether it be high end or not, tend to offer. And the food was deliciously prepared and served."

  • "Have heard about Forepaugh's forever. Somehow never got around to going. We'll go again soon. Lovely mansion atop a hill overlooking St. Paul in a neat neighborhood. Perfect to go early and park at Xcel; walk over; enjoy a great meal; walk back and enjoy the concert. Food was very good. Service was very good. Setting was excellent."

  • "this is a beautiful place to dine. the wine our server recommended was perfect. we ordered a salad which was very good. the main course was walleye and duck. the duck was a little tough, but flavorful. the walleye was a little fishy tasting. the presentation was beautiful. we shared a banana dessert. it was the best i have ever had. i would go back just for the dessert."

I would highly recommend for a quiet romantic evening."
