Chef Whittaker’s vision features dishes that are unpretentious and innovatively prepared using products sourced from local and organic farmers, fishers and producers whenever possible. These combine for a menu featuring snacks such as “crackling & popcorn”; a variety of creative dishes from 'sea', 'land' and 'soil', to nosh on together or enjoy solo as a main; and desserts for a sweet (and a bit savoury) finish.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "One of the best experiences we've had in a long time. Interesting food combinations perfectly prepared, and the most professional service possible."

  • "Forage boasts an interesting tapas style experience. Portions were perfectly sized and dishes were fairly priced. However, food was extremely salty, especially the farro "risotto" and the popcorn ane crackling. My favourite was the grilled kale salad. It was full of flavour, despite it being a tad salty. Service was excellent and prompt. Food runners explained each dish that was delivered to our table which made the meal more memorable. Overall, great place to try!"

  • "We went for my Birthday with a reservation telling you about the Birthday in our reservation. Not one word from your staff.A table in the corner near the bathroom. Gross! The Elk was Blue Rare. The waiter acted like we had committed a crime by complaining about the Elk. We will NOT return."

  • "Visited my mom and her buddy when they were down visiting the big smoke. Blue hairs tearing up the town!!! They had eaten dinner their first night and quite enjoyed it. We had brunch and it was awesome. My kids enjoyed the food but what is not to enjoy about BACON... Food is so good my mom's friend was meeting her family for lunch. I believe the ladies were planning room service to later too."

  • "Having heard good things of Forage in the media and intrigued by the concept (and a lover of mushrooms) we finally got the chance to go this week. We had a memorable dinner with excellent service, just the right balance of responsiveness and knowledge without being overbearing. Loved the concept of small shared plates and a great selection of BC wines and beers. Food was superb with amazing halibut cooked to perfection and great gnocchi with stinging nettles and of course all with lovely wild mushrooms including the first of the season morelles. We'll be back!"

  • "I ate here with a group of 6 of us in total. The food was fantastic! The service was friendly and very thoughtfull. One of my friends was tired and the waiter without even asking brought her an espresso and didn't charge her for it. Impressive! The plates are perfect for sharing and a good way to try lots of things on the menu. I will be coming back for sure!"

  • "The overall uniqueness of the menu is fun. Reading about the ingredients of each dish definitely got the 'juices' flowing. Sadly, many dishes were a bit underwhelming. The Gnocchi needed a little more flavor, probably some salt would have done the trick. Roasted beets? I make them better at home. The game burger was quite tasty. Wouldn't take much to make the dishes taste as good they sound. Great presentation."

  • "Really interesting menu. All local food. Delicious and well presented. Service was great"

  • "Locally sourced sounds good but it seems like they forgot to source some local salt and pepper. The octopus salad could have used a lot more sauce (it had salt!) and some acid; although, the octopus was very tender. The kale salad was well seasoned but nothing special. The elk also lacked seasoning and could have used a lot more salt and more char. Overall the flavors were underwhelming. Also, looking at other tables the dishes were not consistent either. Our elk had blobs of sauce while the neighbouring table had nice swirls. For the price and the hype our meal was underwhelming. Maybe they were having a bad night but we had higher expectations."

  • "This place is becoming a local favourite. Locavore style menu. The burger was a surprise, but now my favourite burger in the city. Only better burgers I've had are Pono Burger and Umami Burger in Santa Monica, California. Just try it. You'll see. Brunch is phenomenal as well."

  • "I met my fussy vegetarian friend for dinner....I love different food and took a chance after checking out the menu. My friend was very impressed...which is a feat in itself! we both loved the Honey bread, Kale chips and especially the stinging nettle with brie....yum! the waiter made the evening, very attentive, informative but not overly invasive. I will return next time I am in Vancouver."

  • "Went for Saturday morning brunch and had a great experience. They have a standard brunch menu with a few unique stand outs. All the food was great and every dish is well portioned."

  • "Four of us were greeted and seated promptly for our reservation. It seemed really noisy at first but we got used to it. The food was delicious and eggs were prepared as requested. One of our party received the wrong entree but it was quickly replaced. Seems there are 2 similar items on the menu. Our waiter was great and kept our coffee topped up. I certainly would go back here."

  • "Good food and vine selection. The food was tasty and well seasoned. Some sharable plates are maybe a bit small compare to others on the menu. Overall we had a great night at Forage."

  • "It was extremly great. Even normal dishes like pasta taste like heaven. Meat and fish is more delicious than anywhere else. The dessert at the end made the point on the i."

  • "We love Forage. The service is usually outstanding, apart from one rude young hostess two visits ago. The food is generally fantastic, although we noticed our game burgers (a signature dish) we're not quite as good as usual. Also, the fries seemed different - perhaps a different oil? I miss the cone for the fries ... Somehow it was more delicious!"

  • "Host had great attitude, great energy. Server was less so, but was up to expectation! the dishes on the menu were all very mouth watering. The kale salad was very delicious. the amount of sweet was just right to balance the savoriness of the kale. portions for the octopus dish was way too small. Good flavour and the palette combination was interesting. Perhaps the plating concept was the thing that didn't work for me, tiny pieces too shattered all over. Then the bison tongue. very intriguing dish.. the meat was cooked to perfect but it was way too salty, even the 65 degree egg yolk couldn't balance the saltiness. Finally was the flatbread. the dough was crunchy and light. the brie and sauce was a bit over powering the toppings."

  • "Brunch and our first visit to Forage... Brunch menu selection was somewhat small and consisted of fairly generic choices, but the food was very fresh and well prepared. Moderate prices, so a decent value for money. House made jam and ketchup a very nice touch and very tasty indeed! Restaurant was quite busy on Sunday morning, but food and beverages were delivered quite promptly to our table and no one pushed us to leave. Refills of coffee offered without us having to ask! Waiter did not however check on our meals and brought our bill without asking if we wanted anything else (and we did want a couple hits of espresso for the road). A good comfortable place for brunch."

  • "Overall the experience was great. The food was delicious though perhaps a little overpriced for the portion size until you take into consideration organic local etc which is a big draw for the restaurant. Our service was a bit slow but the server was responsive and kept us updated. I look forward to going back again with people who can all share ( this time round we all had dietary restrictions that differed so we couldn't share which is how the menu is designed)."

  • "We ordered 4 items from the menu for dinner. The roasted cheddar pan bread, grilled kale salad, the octopus and the halibut. They were all excellent but don't expect a lot of food. When we got back to our hotel my husband insisted that we go for dessert in the hotel restaurant so he could fill up. Good restaurant for people who have small appetites"

  • "The service was very good -- attentive yet unobtrusive. I would have liked it to be a little quieter but the noise wasn't overbearing. The food quality was quite good, and the preparation was technically skilled and well thought through. The downsides of the food were that (1) there was way too much salt, making me speculate that one of the line cooks was in love, and (2) there was way too much oil or butter in everything (except my elk, which was good except that there was too much salt). I realize that being pro-loads-o-fat is trendy, just as being anti-fat once was. And I know it makes things shiny, and I'm as easily distracted by a nice shiny object as the next person is. But I left yearning for a meal inspired by Michel Guerard."

  • "I cannot get enough of your turkey hash with gluten-free toast and the JAM. Oh my the jam is amazing. This is the only place I can have hollandaise sauce and I just love it. Thank you for not messing up the flavor with wheat flour. I also appreciate that you only charge $1 extra for gluten-free toast. I know it costs more to buy and the surcharge is necessary but I sure appreciate how being charged $3 for 2 pieces when a full loaf is $7!"

  • "The service was excellent, and my entrée was great too. I was very unimpressed by the dessert; I would have thought such a place would have a pastry chef, but it would seem not. The "featured snack" wasn't what I expected either. I would go back there for the entrée but I wouldn't get anything else."

  • "We had brunch on Saturday. It was great. I had a traditional bacon and egg breakfast and my friend ordered the Turkey Hash. We were both pleased with the meal and the service. What struck me most was that as I looked around the room people were conversing and enjoying the atmosphere. Believe it or not -- not a phone anywhere in sight. A great experience which I have already recommended to others. Thanks. Janatee"

  • "I knew I would be visiting Vancouver and had been hearing great things about Forage, so I made a reservation a month in advance. When I make a reservation that far in advance I hope to get a decent table, yet when we arrived the hostess seemed to be in a bad mood and then sat us at the darkest table that felt like it was in everyones way and removed from the rest of the ambience. This would have been understandable if there were no other tables open but only half of the tables were full at that point. I would have liked to have been able to see the presentation of our food but the lighting at our table was awful and made the whole outing unimpressive, however the taste of the food was excellent. Overall, it was a disappointment."

  • "One of the best - if not THE best - meals we've had in a very long time. The ingredients were obviously of the highest quality, everything was perfectly cooked, the combinations were inspired and the presentation was excellent. Terrific wine list too - good to see so many BC and Pacific Northwest wines, some of which can be hard to find."

  • "This was our second time to Forage, and we wanted to brings friends for a special occasion, service and food was excellent, until someone decided to turn the music up to "sports bar" level, with a very less than desirable musical selection. The ambiance in the restaurant and atmosphere at our table suddenly disappeared, and the space had become very uncomfortable. Upon asking a random server to turn down the music, a very cold " I will see what I can do"....was the reply. The volume of the music did in fact come down, if only slightly. And although we had to this point a fabulous evening, we felt the need to leave as we were speaking a elevated levels to each other."

  • "My partner and I live very close to the location but had never really noticed the restaurant before. At a silent auction event we won bid on a gift certificate for there seeing the address and happily won. We went in with zero expectations but were blown away with amazing food and service. Also love their concept of local and sustainable. The staff clearly put a lot of thought and care into the dishes they create. Loved the whole experience."

  • "We ordered a mushroom dish that gives the option to add a poached egg. The egg was an additional $3 to the already $14 dish. It comes with three thinly sliced pieces of bread, we wanted more bread to finish the dish, two more small slices arrived. Adding another $2.50 for the extra bread. Food was good, but I don't like when restaurants get lost for $2-3 dollars. Extra bread price should not of been charged. A mushroom dish ended up costing $20, that's crazy."

  • "Disappointing. Waiter: Maybe they don't have enough wait staff. The waiter was always rushing from our table. Did not provide the level of service I expect from an up and coming new restaurant listed as one of the better ones in Vancouver Magazine Food: Scallops were done well. Ahi tuna was overcooked. Perogies was chewy and dry. Gnocchi was slightly overcooked and chewy although the kale and mushroom combination would have made this the runaway winner if the gnocchi has been prepared well. I would not go again."

  • "Forage was not where we had set out to go. We were going to the Twisted Fork and got caught up in their total disorganization and lack of care for those "Lining up" before they opened, so we started looking for a new place, and found this. From the moment we arrived to leaving, they were so hospitable, and the food is fantastic. The Kale Salad is one of a kind, don't miss this, and at breakfast! Really loved this. When back in Vancouver it will be my breakfast spot!"

  • "We both started with a bowl of award winning chowder for $8 each. While the taste was ok the serving size was a joke. It's served in an ugly little fruit cup that reminded me of a hospital stay back in the 70s. My partner had the burger and said it was good. I had the evening duck special. Again served on a strange plate suitable for a lunch sandwich. The meal itself seemed far too small a serving for the price but it was so over the top rich I could only eat half. The duck was very good. All in all we might return and try something else or have the burger. They need to improve their dinner ware if they want to be a fine dining restaraunt. They do after all charge fine dining prices."

  • "Say no more. Everything I was very satisfied with, the service was very friendly (should've gotten her name, whoops), ambience is nice not too dark or bright. I can understand the pricing for fresh, organic food, not complaining. Noticed it was mainly couples or group of couples. I heard this place is fantastic for brunch from many of my friends. Would go here again :)"

  • "Loved the vibe, the energy, the atmosphere. We started chatting with the table next to us as they were showing us they're orders and making recommendations, which we took. Looking at what they had ordered compared to our own, we definately got skimped out on. The plating was inconsistent as our neighbours had received 4 scallops and us three etc. Though the quality was exceptional, we weren't overly excited about the service. The server didn't have the best knowledge on the wine list which I asked about, and we had completely finished our glasses and had to wait long periods of time before another was offered. I would recommend this restaurant and will try it again."

  • "Dining at forage left me wondering if I would give it another shot. Pros: creative, organic, fresh, sustainable, local food dishes served. Tapas style so great for sharing. Friendly service, clean, and a unique meat draw that we happen to win. We walked all over town the rest of the night with a huge slab of vacuumed sealed pork belly, great conversation starter! Cons: music was much too loud so you had to speak with gusto to your partner across the table. Dishes came out one at a time and already had cooled off. This is because everyone in the restaurant seems to receive the same dish at the same time and in the same order. Pricey for what you get since you need to order between three and five dishes for two people."

  • "Went on a Saturday with another couple. Server explained that everything on the menu is (including alcohol) is local - BC. They had some great BC Beers & BC wines. Without us even having to bother to mention it, the server offered to accommodate any dietary restrictions we may have. Elk - delicious. The burger - really really good. Octopus - not the favourite of the night, but still quite tasty. funnily enough, the server said that his favorite dish on the entire menu was the Cheddar bread - and although my husband & I liked it, our friends weren't too keen on it. So it was a bit of a hit and miss. ambience was pretty good. It wasn't 'hopping' but it wasn't quiet or subdued either. Definitely a place to go and have a good time."
