A word from forage
Chef Whittaker’s vision features dishes that are unpretentious and innovatively prepared using products sourced from local and organic farmers, fishers and producers whenever possible. These combine for a menu featuring snacks such as “crackling & popcorn”; a variety of creative dishes from 'sea', 'land' and 'soil', to nosh on together or enjoy solo as a main; and desserts for a sweet (and a bit savoury) finish.

Always a pleasure to come here. We live on the Island , so the occasional stay at the Listel hotel means we can breakfast and dine at Forage. The changing menu offers new surprises each time we have visit. Very professional service all around. The different tastes of home grown and carefully sourced ingredients makes it very tempting to choose every ' sharing' dish on the menu.

I stumbled upon this restaurant online when I was looking for places with the online reservation ability. The menu is small but the dishes are unique and the orders are meant to be shared. It's a little pricey if you're comparing by portion-size but considering the location and the farm-to-table approach, it's a nice place to eat in if you want to support local farmers. The servers and host/hostess were friendly and acknowledged us right away. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and was able to effectively give us suggestions.

We had an enjoyable night at Forage. All the wait staff exceeded expectations. My only complaint was the front desk staff. Before the girl even said hello, she said we had to be out of our seats by 8 pm as the table had another reservation. We got there before our 6 pm reservation. I told our waiter and he apologized for the other staff member. I can tell you after we told the waiter what happened the meal and the staff were fantastic. The octopus was great. You have to try the squash perogies. They were fresh and flavourful. Our clams were cooked perfect and lots of flavor. We had some innovative drinks from the bar such as the Sazerac. Sometimes you have to forget the little things that happen to have a great time and meal. We will definitely go back to Forage but we will make sure we are out by 8!!!

Wonderful concept -- small dishes and sharing, and locally sourced food and local wines/beer. Food was beautifully presented. Our main courses were delicious -- elk loin, salmon, bison ravioli. Chowder was excellent. However the pork crackling was disappointing. It was a bit soggy, hard to get teeth through and lacking in wow factor. Same with the deep fried kale starter. They lacked crispness. Our server was fantastic, but it took a long time between us being seated and him appearing. We had to wait a while for water which we would minus some points for. Apart from that, our server was knowledgeable, helpful and efficient. The four of us shared all three desserts and loved them all.

The Forage is a GEM. A friend of ours recommended the Listel Hotel, and thus we discovered the Forage. I'm just starting to becoming a neophyte foodie. Some of the more esoteric ingredients needed to be decoded for me and that is where the talent and mastery of the table came into the foray. He was delightful. Animated. Clever.Informative. Entertaining. AND THE FOOD.....well. Where to start. It was superb. There were five of us at the table and everyone was gob-smacked. Thankfully we are all 'sharers' so all the dishes moved back and forth on the table. The Root Biryani was exotic. The beef tongue dish was shockingly tasteful. I don't recall the names of the other dishes, but rest assured they were all scrumptious. We had a desert that was a frozen cheese. That lasted about 30 seconds. Great coffee. Great service. Really reasonable prices. Will be back again!!!

Forage was fabulous. Our server gave us a bit of a 'cheat sheet' on what to order, and it was all perfect. Be sure to have some of that award-winning chowder. It's definitely a unique take on chowder, and it was delicious. We also really enjoyed the oysters. Another dish had a cocoa and mushroom 'soil' that was absolutely fantastic. Went on Saturday for a brunch with 4 people in total. It had been over a year since I'd been to forage and was looking forward to dining there again. The food was as before good, decent components and ive always like their commitment to using local and BC products and their service. However on this visit the service was quite poor, ( forage is usual a step above everyone else). We waited over 12 minutes to get a drink order into the bar, OK maybe someone was busy, our server appeared and brought us our drinks., also we had to ask for water refills and cutlery. Not a huge deal but just enough to leave a less than good impression. Hostess was very pleasant and gave us a choice of seating when we arrived and sent us on our way with a smile at the end of brunch.

The food was great but our waitress was even better, Wish I could remember her name. She answered all of our questions with enthusiasm and was super genuinely friendly the entire time, not "fake friendly" like you often get in Vancouver. She was able to tell me everything I could and could not eat with my food allergies and what substitutions they could make for me. Love the philosophy behind how they create their dishes and that everything is locally sourced. We don't go out for dinner often but we will be back.

We brought some out of town friends here for dinner. The four of us liked the concept of the restaurant. We enjoyed our local beer, a good wine list and the service was great. The only downfall to our experience was that the portions were much too small. The dishes are prepared for family style dining as was recommended by our server but the dishes were way too small to share! It was actually a little awkward and embarrassing dividing up what was on each plate and having to share such a silly amount of food. We will not be returning for that reason. There's just too much choice of good food and dining experiences out there to return to a place that's not good value for money.

We had some out of town guests and took them here - great choice. It's a tapas kind of thing - you order dishes and then share them. They come out one at a time. The mushrooms were amazing, as was the grilled kale salad and the albacore tuna. The waiter was helpful, although the place was really busy we got our food in a very timely manner. The only thing we regretted ordering was the salmon collars... the pickled veg were kind of sparse and IMO didn't complement the taste of the salmon very well. ANd they're hard to eat.

The food was amazing from small plate to small plate. Seasonal twists on modern recipes bringing out the best of ingredients and marrying flavors with herbs and spices. The eco-friendly Albacore with yellow squash was exceptional. Salmon collar with fennel delectable. Nice bio and Canadian wines by the glass. Friendly and informative service. We really enjoyed this place. We were on holiday in Vancouver and found this place on Opentable. The reviews were good and it was a nice 10 minute walk from our hotel (Marriott Pinnacle) so we thought we would give it a try. We were very happy with the experience. The food was served family style, small plates. Everything we had was good! The crowd was friendly and energetic! The couple next to us offered one of their plates since they could not finish, which we though was so friendly. The dining area was small, but I think it is the right atmosphere given the type of food they are serving.

The food was tasty, but my only complaint was that I left hungry. We had 3 courses, plus oysters, and I ha to go find a hotdog stand later on in the night. The food is fantastic. We shared three dishes plus a small cheese plate for dessert, all with a bottle of wine, and found the cost very reasonable. I am a vegetarian and so there were not too many choices for me as I also try to avoid cheese. The menu is always fresh however so anything can be substituted. I went for the Kale Salad and the corn bread with out the cheese topping and they were both amazing. I am not really a huge fan of Kale, but decided to try it and glad I did. My co diners got the Elk and an order of Lamb and said they were amazing, especially the lamb. The service was extremely friendly and attentive. No complaints at all from any of us.
