A word from forage
Chef Whittaker’s vision features dishes that are unpretentious and innovatively prepared using products sourced from local and organic farmers, fishers and producers whenever possible. These combine for a menu featuring snacks such as “crackling & popcorn”; a variety of creative dishes from 'sea', 'land' and 'soil', to nosh on together or enjoy solo as a main; and desserts for a sweet (and a bit savoury) finish.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Forage is a restaurant that must be tried by foodies seeking innovative healthy fare using local sustainable ingredients. Emphasis on innovative: creative combinations of ingredients and methods of preparation. An example is their kale salad, with the kale slightly charbroiled before mixing with dressing and bits of dried fruits. A mushroom medley knocks your culinary socks off. We have been there three times and have been delighted, though on most recent visit a few of the dishes were slightly off their mark. Tapas albeit generous-sized portions meant for sharing, so plan on ordering several so you can sample the creative genius of Forage's chef, who reportedly raises many of the ingredients on his farm."

  • "Simple, easy, elegant ambiance. Very knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating staff. Unique dishes made with locally grown/made ingredients; each one surprisingly more delectable than the last, made to share, enjoy and revel in together. Great idea with the chef's "meat draw". Music could be a little quieter but great choice in tracks."

  • "Amazing combinations of flavors. Great small plates for sharing. Service and ambiance is totally comfortably upscale yet prices were very reasonable. Top experience in Vancouver vacation."

  • "We had a great experience at Forage. It might be a bit trendy to go local right now but that shouldn't doesn't mean it's a bad thing. It's nice to know where your food is coming from and Forage does it really well. The room is relaxed with a good vibe, the food is fantastic and the service is on point. It's wonderful to see a staff that has such pride and enthusiasm for their product."

  • "Everything was amazing. Great service, the Elk was to die for, wI'll go back for that."

  • "Everytime I go to the restaurant with my family, I find there REALLY fantastic. Food is perfect, indeed. It is cooked perfectly and tasty so that I can be VERY happy everytime. My favourite is classic benny and baked potatoes. I'm crazy about potatoes and they cook wonderfully. Service is always so nice and friendly. They use local ingredients and that's one reason why I like there. Even if it's your favourite, you have some menu that you don't like in restaurants. But every menu at Forage is very, very nice. A restaurant like this is really rare. If I get a good job, I will certainly go there for breakfast everyday."

  • "We were seated promptly on arrival and accommodated when asking to change tables to allow a sidewalk view. The chowder was amazing and lives up to the reputation. I ordered the lamb and it simply was one of the best tasting I have ever enjoyed. My wife's halibut fillet was perfectly cooked and as fresh as could be. The wine recommendations by the glass were spot on. We have a new favorite in Vancouver!"

  • "We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary at Forage, flew in from Calgary! couldn't have been a better dining experience! food was delicious, ambiance was fun and funky and the service impeccable!!! thank you for making it amazing.. Also, we picked this restaurant because of the nature of the food... i love the idea that restaurants care not only about service and making money but actually feeding people food fit to be eaten and also sustainable for the planet. Hope other restaurants will catch on to this idea!"

  • "The bartender was on fire, he made a fantastic old fashioned. As usual the appetizers were great, the mains were enjoyed by all. I was in the mood for a burger, I don't eat them very often, and their burger is fantastic. Service was attentive, with wit and concern for our well being. Not my first time and will not be my last."

  • "Elements were good. We ordered several dishes and they came all at once. Wine choice limited."

  • "Service was rushed and somewhat lacking although I understand it was Friday evening. Order weren't fulfilled and waiter wasn't exactly helpful until I insisted my request wasn't met. He should have taken the initiative, so not impressed. Simple Request for peppermill went ignored. Food wasn't exactly what I would rate as being stellar."

  • "I went as a group of six for a work-related dinner to Forage. I found the server friendly, professional and extremely knowledgeable. Service was prompt and a accurate. The food was creative and delicious, however, the portions were extremely small and we left hungry. I would recommend Forage for a date night or business lunch. Good ambience, great cocktail, beer and wine selection and great service. Overall definitely worth checking it out!"

  • "We were greeted and seated promptly when we arrived. The restaurant was pretty empty and we were a party of 3. I expected to be seated at a 4 person table but instead was seated in an ads corner table where 2 people were at the corner of a booth and 1 was on a chair with their back to another table, odd and slightly uncomfortable arrangement. The good overall was not bad, portions were smaller than I anticipated even for a sharing concept restaurant. I did appreciate the locally sourced and seasonal ingredients and I think there was good balance on the menu. Overall not a bad place to dine. Service was attentive and our glasses were never empty for long."

  • "I had to cajole my husband to go to Forage, the somewhat limited menu put him off. However, everything was first rate, from the quality of the ingredients to the somewhat innovative preparations. The seafood chowder & the roasted mushrooms were delicious & the grilled kale salad was a knockout! Most of the local wines on the list were unknown to me, but the barkeep made a nice recommendation that matched our meal well. Husband went home happy."

  • "My wife and I were at the hotel where Forage is located for a week, and we ate there several times. They provide food that is locally sourced and of the highest possible quality: Very imaginative and interesting dishes, beautifully prepared and presented and with a great wine list. The staff are very knowledgeable and attentive. All in all, it was a great foodie experience. The noise level could be a bit high at rush times, and it is highly recommended to make a reservation at peak times, particularly the weekend."

  • "We were with a group of 5 which made it fun to try many of the dishes. The share plate format is a great way to sample numerous offerings as they all sounded so interesting. Love the locally sourced non-typical foods. We had a very knowledgeable and attentive server and they got us out in time to make it to our event."

  • "Forage was exactly what we wanted...local food done well. We loved how all the ingredients were listed...our server even gave us some tips when we said we were going to try to recreate a couple dishes at home."

  • "Forage provided a great dining experience. Having shared tapas style plates allowed for a complete dinner experience. I found the locally sourced menu to be exciting and as varied in type as I have ever experienced. The service was engaged and the ambience favored cross table talk. The meal was a top five restaurant experience for me. I would place Forage as a must do while visiting (or living in) Vancouver."

  • "Our 1st trip to Forage, overall we enjoyed it, but the pace of the meal was a bit erratic. our waiter Simon suggested sharing, but this wasn't appealing. one side of the table didn't have any food in front of them for about 20 minutes, while the other 3 were enjoying their larger size appetizers. However, the wines were excellent, and we ordered another glass. My entree, the fettucini carbonara was flavourful, the pasta melted in my mouth. I started with 2 succulent oysters, accompanied by a dash of horse radish, and a strawberry vinaigrette, delicious. One thing, on our way out, we noticed a chalkboard with the special of the day, lamb shoulder, I probably would have ordered that, but our waiter didn't mention it."

  • "I had made a reservation on-line with Open Table. When we arrived we were advised that we would have to wait upwards of 1/2 an hour for a table and that it may be outside (not what I had envisioned). I was not amused and prepared to leave. I asked what the purpose of making a reservation is if I have to wait for 1/2 an hour. I was told that they were just so busy....in any case, the restaurant manager, Matthew, told us he would do his best. We sat at the bar, contemplating our next steps, when Matthew advised us that they would have a table for us in about 5 minutes. We stayed and very much enoyed our meal and the service was attentive and professional. While it started out a bit 'rocky' I would certainly return."

  • "I went with a group of 3 for brunch around 10:45, with a reservation. The hostess and servers were great. We had one party member who was running late, but the server was very nice about it. The food was very tasty. Would definitely recommend the lentils, french toast and salmon bennies. They are really good at cooking soft eggs. Also recommend making reservation online."

  • "Generally one item we ordered was quite nice. The rest was not so great. We made a mistake in our ordering and ended up with three waiters and I think the owner if not the manager gossiping about it loudly by our table and then learning at us. Didn't make for the best experience. "

  • "The food was very good but the service let down the whole meal. When a small group beside us (who seemed to be known to the staff) arrived, we were forgotten about. We waited ages for our second course, then it took so long before we were asked for a dessert order that we got fed up and went home. This ruined our nice meal out, wouldn't bother going back."

  • "Both times we have been to forage, we have been extremely impressed with how they combined fresh foods to make extraordinary flavours. The kale, grilled lightly with a hint of blue cheese and the assorted local mushrooms are two of our favourites. And those are just sides! The pork belly entree is deadly but delicious."
