Diner Reviews
  • "The plates are a little big. So if you look for size over quantity this is your place. It's decent Italian eating.definitely good for cravings ."

  • "We've been to Fontina Grille before and their food is great. But this time when we went, I order the pizza siciliana and the pizza was really salty. I'm not sure if that's the way it is or not so I didn't really complain."

  • "been eating out at italian restaurants for forever -- a native New Yorker, I've had my choice. and experienced many. in the five years living in Montgomery county we've tried many and this one hits the spot ! the food is fabulous and the servers are wonderful ."

  • "Food ok, a little heavy-handed with salt. Service not very friendly. But will go back to try other drinks at the bar."

  • "We try to go to Fontina Grille about once a month. The food is always great. The service is terrific and the management makes sure everything runs smoothly. This restaurant really is a "neighborhood gem.""

  • "Great place to catch up with gal pals. 1/2 price bottles of wine but because the server didn't mention this (we had to ask, i gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. Very accommodating and friendly staff - food was delicious and the place stayed open for us as we gabbed away past mindnight!"

  • "This was my second time in 3 days to visit this restaurant. First time, I had the salmon dinner and it was just okay. Bread was delicious, company was great and the staff was good. Second time, I got salmon on the salad and it was overcooked and not so great. Bread was surprisingly also over-baked. Staff was terrific again. Steak salad got good reviews from my friends- it is highly recommended. We had 2 desserts the first night - chocolate cake - a bit dry, tasted like it came out of the fridge/freezer, but the peanut butter bombe was fantastic. Both times the wait staff was super accommodating and the staff at the host stand was very welcoming."

  • "I have been going to Fontina Grille for years and it is always excellent. The wines are reasonable, the food is tasty and the atmosphere is inviting. I'm never disappointed."

  • "We've been regulars at Fontina Grille since they opened, but in recent months our experience has been disappointing. The quality of the food has become quite uneven. EXAMPLES: I still love the mussels and the vodka penne, for example, but my last two fish entrees have been dry and accompanied by a heap of unimaginative vegetables barely cooked. My companion had a chicken piccata recently that was so tough and salty that it was inedible. It appears the kitchen is on auto-pilot and quality control has been a victim of the the routine. Sadly, we'll be going down the street to Il Pizzico more often. We'll check back to see if things have gotten better, but our fondness for this place is wearing pretty thin."

  • "The food is almost always great. Our waiter left much to be desired. We've had him before. We learned his name this trip. From now on, when we make reservations or when we arrive at the restaurant, we will ask to have any other waiter but him. Everyone else who worked our table was great."

  • "Fontina Grille is a mixture of a neighborhood restaurant and a place for a special occasion. Having the Open Table option is a definitely plus, especially for a special occasion. Menu is well organized for both light and hearty eaters, servers are professional and very attentive, food is well prepared and great tasting. For those more health conscious, there is a nice wheat penne option. Overall, we have been to Fontina Grille a number of times and always leave happy and full. Keep up the good work."

  • "Love, love, love Fontina Grille. They are a hidden gem in King Farm. We have been going there for years and just love it."

  • "We were a group of 10 people. We all ordered different dinners and everyone enjoyed what they selected. I selected this restaurant for two reasons, the noise level is decent so you can talk to one another and the food is consistently good."

  • "Arrived on time for a 7:00 reservation. Did not get seated until 7:40. Uncomfortable waiting space. Was promised a round table- tried to sit us at 2 tables pushed together , where 2 would have been on the crack. Eventually got to the round, but shaky start to what was eventually a good meal."

  • "Adequate portions, great flavor, not over spiced or over seasoned. One of the best Italian places in the DC/MD area."

  • "I really liked the food at this place and the ambiance is great! They have great wine and their prices are fair! I'm defiantly going back soon."

  • "We chose to try Fontina on Valentine's Day, which was a bit overbooked and frenetic atmosphere. However, we were impressed enough by the number of people who obviously were regulars, that we intend to return on a more realistic day, when service should be a bit faster. The food was great...seabass risotto was excellent and the service was very friendly, but understandably slow."

  • "The server took some time to take our drinks (but understandable given the holiday). I would not recommend the house salad - very bitter and sour! I ordered the rib eye and it was good."

  • "We made a reservation on a night that is busy for any restaurant due to it being a holiday. When we arrived, they warned us that they were running behind by 15 minutes. At 30 minutes, I asked about our table, and the staff went out of their way to get us and some of the other couples seated. From there the staff was prompt getting us drinks and getting us started since we had been waiting. I'm disappointed they managed a busy night poorly, but they did everything they could to help us out short of free items, so there has to be something to be said for that. Other than that, food is worth the price. For italian in a family-friendly atmosphere that's not a chain, this is my top choice - huge menu with plenty of diverse options."

  • "Food and service are always good.... I was taken back slightly when we ate there last Saturday (party of 4) and they automatically added in the tip (18%) I have come to expect this with larger parties dining out... but 4???!!!"

  • "My boyfriend and I arrived early and were taken care of at the bar while we waited. The bartender came when we needed, offered to give recommendations, and was extremely thorough and pleasant. Once my party arrived, we realized that we would need to rush through dinner to make an appointment later (our mix-up). Our server got us in and out in time without making us feel rushed. All of this was great. The only concern we had was that my stepmother asked about the kind of tomato sauce they used in a dish. The server assured us that it was a house-made sauce made from fresh tomatoes. When it arrived, she realized immediately that it was not. Luckily, he brought a different dish for her within minutes and (sort of) solved the problem."

  • "My friend and I went to Fontina Grill on a Monday night, we expected the place to be dead but it wasn't, there was a good group there. Our meal was very good, we both had the Salmon & Spinach, which was cooked perfectly & tasted delicious. And what a bargain on the Early Bird Special, that included a salad & dessert. The bread was also very good! Definitely will be going back!"

  • "Fontina Grill is a GREAT restaurant. We have never been disappointed. It is a family owned spot where everyone is always warm and friendly and makes you feel very welcome. The food is excellent and we have never had a bad meal or been disappointed in either the food or the service."

  • "The food was fine, but I left uninspired. The noise level was very high, so it was difficult to have a conversation with those just across the table."

  • "I am a long-time patron of Fontina Grill but was sorely disappointed at the pecan-crusted Rockfish the other evening. The actual fish was paper-thin, breaded/crusted in a thick casing that dominated the taste, and fried just enough to dry it out. My companion had the same entrée and got similar results. Very disappointing. Our previous two times one of us got the chicken piccata and it was thick and tough. Sincerely hope this is not a trend."

  • "My wife and I had been to the Fontina Grille once before and had a wonderful dinner. The food and the service were well beyond what I expected from a neighborhood restaurant/bar. So at the last minute on New Years Eve I called and was able to get a table for dinner. We have our 16 year old special needs son with us and my wife has a some specific food allergies. We arrived a little early, but we didn't wait long. It wasn't too noisy and we were surprised with man playing jazz guitar next to the bar. Perfect. We had the same waiter as last time. He was very helpful and answered our questions and the food was amazing, again, beyond anything we expected. Even the marinara is killer! Better than my Italian grandma's! Highly recommended."

  • "Despite our disappointment on this visit, we will probably visit again. On this occasion, the crab cakes were extremely salty, the salmon was bland and overcooked, and the cabernet sauvignon ordered came as a sauvignon blanc."

  • "I've never had a bad meal at Fontina Grille. The service is good, the food is always delicious and it's a great place for a family dinner or a nice weekend casual meal with a date or spouse. Don't expect nouvelle cuisine. But if you want a nice, consistent, well-priced neighborhood Italian restaurant, this is the place."

  • "Great food. Great service. The management there is amazing. They make you feel like the guest of honor. Must have the sea bass and the crab stuffed portobello mushrooms. Quite sinful."

  • "While the mussel dish was excellent, the salmon dish good, and the salad fair, I would have come again except for two things: The Courvoisier that I had after my espresso cost me half of what I pay for a .750L bottle; and an automatic tip of 18 percent on the total bill, including the alcohol tax, was added to my credit card slip. I tip fairly, including on the undiscounted price when a discount has been extended, but I expect it to be voluntary. Furthermore, offering an adjustment after a customer complains means that those who don't complain are being treated unfairly. I do not plan to visit this restaurant again even though it is the best restaurant within walking distance of my home."
