Diner Reviews
  • "My family + another met at 5 on Sunday for dinner. The food was unique and had loads of flavor. I wanted to try every appetizer. My son isnt too adventurous but I dont think he ever ate more in one sitting. He had the plantains and brisket. I had the guacamole shredded beef appetizer and the salmon. Best guacamole ever! Enjoyed leftovers the next day as entree portions were huge. The only issue was they kept changing the air (was often blowing on us and freezing), the lighting, and music level. I think each changed 10 times throughout the meal. I would absolutely frequent Fonda for the food and service."

  • "Came in with high hopes and an appreciation for authentic food from Mexico. Didn't find much to love. No Sangrita to go with the tequilas. Chile relleno was a letdown. I hate to say it, but I would pass on this restaurant and go to Empellon instead."

  • "We ended up leaving before we even got food. I ordered a Bloody Mary and it was the worst drink I have ever had. The brunch menu didn't have many options so we paid for the drink (even though I couldn't finish it, it was so bad) and went to Waffles and Dinges down the street. Would never reccommend this place."

  • "We enjoyed our second meal here. The waiter was great-- fun and attentive. Great food, awesome drinks (margaritas and sangria), and they comped us a round after they had to move us from one table to another, which we appreciated. It was really loud when we arrived (a bit before 9) but quieted down around 10."

  • "I come to Fonda on a near weekly basis for happy hour and the amazing guacamole and it NEVER disappoints. On the dinner menu, I particularly love the pollo norteño and the fish. The dishes are flavored so well and so complexly that as each bite unfolds there is something new about the dish to enjoy. This was my first time at Fonda for the brunch special. The service was fantastic and the food was very good, but it wasn't comparable to the dinner fare. A friend who ordered chileaquiles said they would go for something else next time because the ratio of chips to everything else was off, making it mainly a bowl of chips. I enjoyed my omelette, but there was nothing inventive about it."

  • "One of the best brunches in NYC - delicious food, drinks didn't stop flowing, attentive staff who knew we needed refills before we even realized it ourselves. Excellent for groups - make a reservation at least a day ahead, though, to secure a table!"

  • "I took my girlfriend to this wonderful Mexican restaurant for her birthday and we had a wonderful evening. The portions are small but absolutely delicious. The ambiance is fantastic - quiet and candlelit. The service is excellent - our waiter knew the menu very well and was able to answer all our questions and suggest a few things. I highly recommend the fish taco, it is mouthwateringly delicious. We were a bit late to our reservation but were seated immediately. There is a full bar as well, but note that they do close down completely at 11."

  • "the waitstaff tried on two occasions to take away played with food that was clearly being eaten. that's really unfortunate lack of training. it's punishingly noisey... so at a small table for four there was simply no possibility of heating what the person sitting diagonally across said. that produced interesting conversational dynamics. one dies not wish to have to yell throughout dinner after all. it's hard still to find good Mexican inspired regional cooking in NY city. and this place is better than most. they could use a bit lighter hand with the salt however. some of the plates were overwhelmingly slaty to the point that the salt rather than bringing out complex tastes erased them."

  • "polished off guacamole, had to order 2 orders it was that good. Mole was excellent."

  • "Came here for last day of NYC Restaurant Week. Guacamole starter was good; ordered the Carne Asada for a main and meat was overcooked, under-seasoned and completely flavorless. Only one dessert option left. Really rowdy and noisy, even at 7pm. Not worth the $38 price point per person, and wouldn't come back."

  • "Went to Fonda for brunch last Saturday with a group of 6 people. It was recommended by a friend. Great food. Everyone ordered something different and was pleased with their meal. Unlimited brunch is one of the best deals in NYC! You can choose mimosas, bloody Mary's, margaritas, beer or a Rosalita ALL UNLIMITED for 1.5hrs!!! This is probably the best/tastiest food I have ever had at an unlimited brunch place. It also had a very cool ambiance. Would definitely recommend!"

  • "I took my husband here for his 60th birthday as he loves Mexican food. It surpassed all our expectations. The cuisine was flavorful and well presented. The variety of beers on tap was terrific. The service was prompt and cordial. We'll be back for sure."

  • "We really enjoyed out experience. Endless margaritas were great and the food was delicious I just wish our server was more attentative."

  • "The food was excellent and I would definitely go back but we had to wait entirely too long for a table. We went for restaurant week and dad reservations for 2 at 7:45. We showed up on time and didn't get seated until almost 8:30. They offered us a quarter of a margarita while we waited. So that whole situation was frustrating, but otherwise our waiter was fine - it was just the host staff that we were unhappy with."

  • "Hubby and I had dinner here during restaurant week, read all the reviews on the drinks and just had to try it. We were pleased with both the food and drinks. Happy hour drinks at $6, such a good deal. Food was tasty, slightly different than others.... Will be back...."

  • "I love Mexican food and Fondas was a good change up from the more popular places in the city. Guacamole was excellent. Would recommend to others."

  • "Made a last minute reservation for dinner on Friday night. The bar was buzzing and we were seated with no delay. The server was really helpful with the menu and answering any questions about the margaritas and was very helpful getting us in and out so we could still make it to a UCB down the street on time. The guac was as good as advertised, love that they give warm soft tortillas as well as chips. Spicy mushroom soup was really interesting special (didn't love the masa dumplings, did love the mushrooms), skirt steak taquitos and chicken flautas were both worth ordering and a value at $8 ea, and the beet salad was loaded and delicious (as were the 5 big shrimp served on the side). Will def be back for dinner and $10 margaritas!"

  • "A really good atmosphere! The food is well prepared but spicy. Mild guacamole is already very spicy :)"

  • "This place is amazing! We started out with margaritas, which were all great. The guac was fresh and delicious and served with fresh chips and tortillas. Even the salsa they brought with the guac was fantastic! We then had a tlacoyo and flautas and I felt like I was eating in Mexico City (where I grew up). We then had tacos, beef and pastor, which were very tasty as well and made with fresh tortillas. The pastor is not authentic but the taste was amazing. We also got cochinita pibil which was absolutely delicious. We got esquites and nopales as sides and even those rocked. We would definitely go back!"

  • "I will return to Fonda's only for the brunch and the drinks. I ordered chile relleno, it was lukewarm and had a round of Borsin cheese on it. It definitely tasted and looked like leftovers. The service and the drinks were great though."

  • "This place is so versatile. They have tasty, cheap brunch with awesome french pressed coffee. I come here often to hang at the bar for happy hour foods and drinks. The guac is also awesome! This is a great all-around place for brunch, drinks, dinner, or late night food."

  • "Great food and good service but if you go during happy hour (only at the bar M-F 5-8) be prepared for serious NOISE especially if you're seated in the front of the restaurant."

  • "We love Mexican and our 15 year old son has celiac disease. This restaurant is awesome for incredible food and much is/was naturally gluten-free. The atmosphere was cozy and fun, the food was incredible, my son had no problem finding plenty to eat, the margaritas were amazing. We LOVED this restaurant. The chips were gluten-free that came with the guacamole -- and many dishes came with corn tortillas. Can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Delicious, authentic, fun."

  • "I made a reservation for 6 people for a birthday dinner at 9... we were a full 30 minutes late but they held our table for us which I thought was SO generous. The food was very good, but the margarita's weren't my particular favorites. They didn't offer pitchers, which was very sad. Good food though and nice ambiance!"

  • "We went for dinner here because we wanted authentic Mexican food. We were not disappointed. The food is very good, especially the guacamole. The only complaint we have is they are a bit heavy on the cilantro. The place is very busy and somewhat noisy but this is expected. :-) Service was good and we were not rushed. Definitely would go back."

  • "Came here for a boozy brunch. Service is lacking a bit. We saw our waiter when he took our order and after we paid. We were chasing servers for drinks since no one came to check up on us. The food was delicious though! Also the place could be updated a bit, looks a bit dated."

  • "This is authentic Mexican food - a rarity in New York City - and what a thrill to find it in the East Village. The quality of the food, the decor and wonderful service attitutde makes this restaurant stand head and shoulders above its neighbors!"

  • "Went here with my boyfriend Saturday night. We had a corner table for two, it could have been romantic but the acoustics are loud, we couldn't hear our waiter when ordering, and I received the wrong salad because he heard me wrong. He took the salad away, was very apologetic and quickly brought me the correct salad. On to the food: it was all excellent. The Duck Zarape is delicious. My boyfriend is allergic to gluten and dairy, which always makes dining an adventure, but the tortillas are gluten free and they were very accommodating about no dairy. The prices are also reasonable, we had the guacamole, duck zarape, tacitos, Pork Pubil, two drinks each and the bill came to $109. We are definitely going back soon, their brunch is next!"

  • "Really good deal for brunch. 25$ will buy you a great entree from a choice of 10, and bottomless drinks from a choice of 5. The bloody marys are spicy and strong. The guacamole and chips are somewhat on the pricy side for 11$ but a must-have here nevertheless...the guaca is out of this world. The only thing off is the noise level, but thats inevitable in a popular brunch place. The service was fantastic! Tip them well"
