A word from FOG CITY
This iconic San Francisco restaurant reopened in September 2013, heralding the return of a beautiful destination for modern, eclectic cuisine and cocktails along the City’s Embarcadero. At the helm is renowned chef and owner Bruce Hill. The landmark Fog City Diner, which first opened in 1985, was completely re-imagined by chef Hill and the restaurant’s founders. Maintaining the energy and spirit of the beloved original, this new incarnation offers innovative menus in a sophisticated, warm and open environment. Join us for lunch and dinner seven nights a week, an afternoon cocktail, or weekend brunch. If your reservation time is unavailable, please give us a call so we can better inform you of additional booking options.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We took our friend here for her birthday and stayed for hours, trying everything, sipping new cocktails, and enjoying the view. The ambiance is fabulous -- great for any special occasion or date. The waiter knew it was our friend's birthday (from the reservation), and the first thing he said to our table was happy birthday (to her). The food was outstanding, and we loved the place so much we went home with fog city diner glassware (purchased, not swiped!)."

  • "I work close to Fog City and now have tried it in its new form twice. I like the open, airy look of the restaurant, though the decibel level has risen to the point of being unpleasant. It was hard to have a conversation with my friend. I had a burger, which was excellent, though I missed the broader selection on the former menu and the prices are higher."

  • "This place was recommended by a native San Francisco resident and man am I glad he told me about it. The vibe is very hip without being too hipster and the food was amazingly good. The menu is a little small nth as someone who can't have dairy or gluten I was able to enjoy all they had to offer. If you're looking for a nice place that isn't too price and not full of tourists I would highly recommend this place. You don't have to make a reservation but you'll usually get a better seat if you do. And if you like eggs you HAVE to order the deviled eggs. Not sure when I'll be back in San Fran but be assured that when I am I'll visit this place again."

  • "The wood roasted chicken ROCKS! Juicy and perfectly seasoned & enough for two to share. Excellent strawberry shortcake & cappuccino topped off a great meal."

  • "This restaurant and all they have accomplished in their "redux" version is perfect. The previous incarnation was already fantastic but what they have done in overhaul of decor and kitchen makes it a TOP SPOT in SF stops for food, bar, and view. Everything is exactly as I would have made a restaurant of my own had I been able. The best of all is the ROASTED CHICKEN which is bar none in quality, flavor, presentation. A foodies dream. But the sides and dessert were absolutely perfect as well. Ask for Abraham or Tobias as your waiter. KNOWing THE CRAFT OF THE KITCHEN should aspire all to their waiter greatness. We all want a good review of what comes forth from the kitchen: they both know how to make your palette melt..."

  • "I had anticipated my return to Fog City after the renovation. I found the renovation and new restaurant interior to be very nice. It is no longer the diner look but a nice restaurant feel on an odd corner street. The food, however, did not impress me at all. I will preface that living in SF, we venture to a lot of good restaurants. The ahi tartare was one of the worst we've had - on weird hashbrown tough rounds. The cauliflower nuggets were okay in their breaded and fried coating. Grilled Octopus Salad was also a disappoint meant with little flavor and little bit of Octopus. Deviled eggs were okay-bacon always helps. We may have just ordered the wrong items, but we will not be returning."

  • "I've always loved this location, but the food had declined over the years. So I'm really delighted that they have reworked the menu and bar options to better display the best of the Bay Area. We started with two incredible vegetable dishes - Brussel sprouts and cauliflower - and then shared a huge tender pork chop and perfectly cooked fish. We also enjoyed our cocktails which were slight twists on classics. And of course there was the incredible view. The only false note was at the end when the waiter brought us a "birthday dessert" and never offered us the full dessert menu, coffee or after dinner drinks. Management should review this policy since the outcome doesn't match the intention."

  • "I have not been to the Fog City Diner since the remodel - overall the outside appearance has changed in addition to the food choices. They have definitely changed from comfort food to small plates. We tried the brussel sprouts - tasty, deviled eggs were a bit salty. Chicken was expensive $34 good for sharing. Overall dining experience was 4 stars."

  • "Had the Sunday brunch at the Fog, the Brunch menu is great and the Country Benedict was delicious! Have been going into the Fog since they opened in 1985, and while it has had some "down periods" I am very happy with the new chef as well as the "new look". Always a great and lively bar scene, and now the bar is bigger! The noise level on Sunday was non existent, but I have been there on a crowded Friday evening where it was intolerable. Still, the food and the great service are worth the shouting!"

  • "First time back since the changes. The inside is nothing special.Rather cold and plain in my opinion. It's very, very loud and we were there late on a Thursday so I can only imagine what it would be like at peak times. The food was o.k., not special. The drinks were nice but quickly got warm. I am somewhat offended that you have to pay for bread in a SF restaurant. And then you can't get more butter. Prices were all over the map but had a hard time deciding on what to get as options were limited. Finally, my pet peeve. If you want to rush a diner out of a place, don't take a 9pm reservation. Towards the end of dining, we had no less than 5 different people come by to clear our table when we weren't done."

  • "Fog City looks amazing now and completely different from the original. The service however is slow, even if you have a reservation expect to wait 15 mins (as told to you by a very surly front of house) and don't go there hungry, from ordering to food arriving was 40 minutes (despite all the dishes being cold). Skip it, there is better places to eat."

  • "With the renovations, the ambiance has changed from a sort of upscale psuedo-diner to a more standard San Francisco upscale restaurant with great views and amazing, locally sourced, brilliantly constructed food. I have no quibbles with the food itself. Presentation was beautiful. Service was a bit slow due to the crowd, but our waiter always showed up eventually. Biggest complaint is the noise level. With fewer booths and closer seating, it's really hard to avoid the conversations on either side and have any level of intimacy."

  • "The view was just ok, they tout it as part of the appeal but it fell short. It was so loud in there we were unable to hear each other OR the server. He was great, probably the best part of the experience. The food was ok, not bad by any means. But for the portions and price...wouldn't go back."

  • "My husband and I discovered Fog City Diner 27 years ago and loved it then. The idea of small plates was a new dining experience for us. We live outside of the city now and had not dined at FCD in 20 years. We only realized last year that a renovation was in progress. Friends from SoCal were in town for dinner. We met at the new and updated Fog City and were so happy to find the DNA of the original was still there. The food was modern but not beyond. Service was very friendly and attentive. It is great the outside design was not changed, but giving the guest a nice surprise with the interior. We won't wait 20years to visit again!"

  • "This is my second time here and this time we were a group of 6. That made the sharing food concept here a bit difficult as we ordered 4 mains plus sides and everyone got a little of everything, but still not a full meal. The food is good, especially the whole chicken and lamb skewers but it would be better if they just made smaller portions and everyone could have their own!"

  • "My wife and I had lunch here on a whim. I hadn't been since the remodel, and it is very nice! The service was great and it was not crowded on a Tuesday afternoon. The food was excellent. My only nitpick is that the portions of food for the main courses are way too small. Especially for the prices charged, there should be a lot more protein with the lamb skewers. What I did have was delicious, I simply wish there were more. The baked fries are excellent, and the in-house custard with carmel sauce is divine."

  • "Well greeted and welcomed upon arrival. Water and all menus supplied to each of us. Wait staff was excellent, well informed and courteous. The food was terrific(nuts, brussels sprouts and cauliflower) and the delectable whole chicken. Yummy!"

  • "Maybe we had the worst table in the restaurant, but the acoustics were horrendous, which is unacceptable for a recently remodeled restaurant of this calibur. We could here the conversation of a group of diners two tables away loud and clear while we could barely hear our foursome. My husband could see directly into the ladies restroom every time the door opened. Our plates were left on our table for almost 20 minutes after we were all done. Our server took away my drink before it was empty. She offered a replacement but never apologized. My daughter's salad arrived first; she was halfway finished with it when my salad arrived; we had both finished our salads when my husband's soup arrived. We were in shock - no comment from the waitstaff."

  • "Not only was the food fantastic, but the service was beyond exceptional. I had the trout and never had better. It was tangy and sweet at the same time. Not at all greasy. For dessert, my server recommended the strawberry shortcake. Flaky, flavorful, delicate, sweet - but not too sweet. just the right combination of strawberries, cake, and cream... though a few more strawberries would have been nice to have on the side. I had gone here as I was told they carried my favorite wine (Rubissow), but unfortunately, they didn't. While bummed, the server provided me with 4 alternatives to try and I found one that was very good. I appreciated her patience in helping me find the right one."

  • "Went to FOG for a birthday lunch/dinner. Service very slow and uninspired, probably because we were the last group in the lunch shift. drinks, appetizers very slow to appear. server never smiled; didn't ask how my daughter preferred her hamburger (came medium, she likes rare) food was just OK. $3.75 per oyster was outrageous for these tiny things. overall, lunch was $150 for four, without dessert. Will NEVER return."

  • "From the deviled eggs to the Brussels sprouts my group was so thrilled with the restaurant. I recommend the Strawberry Shortcake as well as the grilled shrimp entree. The ice cream lovers were initially disappointed by the size of the frozen custard but the quality filled them up so they left with a smile on their faces."

  • "My curiosity got the best of me, and I had to give the new Fog City a try. I had heard a couple negative comments, but I'm glad that I didn't let them dissuade me. From the moment that I entered the restaurant, until when I left, everything was perfect. Ibrahaim at the bar served up one of the best Manhattans that I've ever had. The host, Tyler, was very, very welcoming and friendly. We were seated at a great table with an awesome view. Our waiter, Jose, was very knowledgeable of the menu and how each dish was prepared. To top things off, the meal was phe-nome-nal!!! It was incredibly delicious. I highly recommend the pork chop."

  • "Fun, happening spot. Pricey but it's on the water so not surprised. Food was good although a little heavy on the oil/butter. I had the shrimp (all three of them) and spinach. Strawberry shortcake was delicious. Brussel sprouts tasty. Oysters were devine. Salad good but again, a little overdressed. Bread was yummy."

  • "I was quite disappointed going back to the newly remodeled fog city (no diner). I had the tuna salad which I think was supposed to be a Tuna Nicoise substitute. They used a poached (over cooked) pulled tuna and it would have been better grilled fresh. The butter lettuce was wilty with no color and little flavor. My friend had the salmon flatbread which looked good but came out looking like two slices of open faced bruschetta, no sides. The inside of the restaurant looked great and the service was good. If they could only bring back the quality, flavor and presentation of the food."

  • "Tables crowded together and it was very noisy. Had to shout across a very small table for two. It distracted from the food, which was quite good. Unfortunately we won't be back because the crowding and the noise made the dinner unpleasant."

  • "Multiple special occasions had been spent here in the past. College graduation, engagement, romantic dinners. This past Saturday has changed my view and loyalty. Bread came after a long wait and asking three times. Water was poured for some and the pitcher was left empty. Food quality was over all good. In a city of vegans and vegetarians not one item on (or off) the menu existed. It was looked down upon when we asked for lemon to flavor the blan cauliflower. Food came to the table we did not order and then they billed us for it. The food came out in random order and we had to remind them many times about a few of the items. They finally brought our broccoli at the end of the meal! The menu should be labelled w/ small plates and big plates."

  • "Starters to mains, the food was great! Brussels and the cauliflower apps were particularly outstanding. The table enjoyed the pork chop (cooked to perfection and flavors well matched on the dish), the rib eye was an ideal medium rare. We also had a lovely, courteous staff taking care of us - from the moment we entered. My parents are tough critics and they were impressed."

  • "The "new" Fog City has settled down and is turning out nice meals, The big problem is the two-seater tables, arranged in a tight curved window space in such a way that the server has to squeeze by every time he/she wants to address either our table or the ones on either side! It's very very awkward. If they removed just one of the tables in this space, diners wouldn't feel so cheek-by-jowl, and servers wouldn't have to insert themselves constantly between the tables."

  • "Our group of five on a Friday evening was seated in a window booth facing the Embarcadero. The adjacent bar area hadn't filled up yet, but the noise level already made conversation difficult. After an initial problem understanding our waiter's explanations, service was smooth. We ordered a variety of things to share. The grilled brussels srpouts, while crunchy outside and tender inside, were overwhelmed by oil. The grilled broccoli were better, perfectly done in fact. A kale and quinoa salad was not overdressed but was among the blander dishes we ordered. The lamb skewers were flavorful, resembling adana kebabs in Turkish restaurants. The tuna tartar served on little puffed rice cakes were merely okay."

  • "I have been coming to Fog City (Diner) for some 25 years, every time I travel from NY to Ca. Although the new restaurant atmosphere is pleasing and much more posh, the food (tapas style small plates) left a huge void. We tried six dishes, some arrived at the same time (hot and cold) together, a salad with a hot green vegetable. Impossible to enjoy together. Grilled octopus had almost no octopus. Planked salmon was SUPERB!! Our server was exceptional."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "While the renovation on the outside was not potentially worth the wait, the interior facelift, the food, and service still lives up to it's iconic status. Great for any time of the day, Fog City captures the San Francisco ambiance very well."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "The noise level at the new Fog City is absurd. The service was overly attentive - explaining the one daily special and that the chicken is an entire bird rather than a single portion - was helpful. But we didn't appreciate the server reading the entire menu to us. Drink orders were screwed up twice. The food was quite good but not good enough to put up with the noise level."
