Diner Reviews
  • "Our hostess offered us seats at the bar because our reservation was running late- it turned out wonderfully. The bartender was excellent and knowledgable about the food, and our experience was great."

  • "The wait staff was knowledgable and friendly. The wine recommendation was spot on. The fruit salad was original and the pastas were yummy. So why the 3 stars? About three bites into our desserts, the check was placed on the table. No offer of another glass of wine, which my husband wanted. No offer of an after-dessert cup of tea, which I wanted. Staring at your bill while not even done with your food suggests one thing: you are on borrowed time and should leave because your hour and a half of allotted dinner time are up. This is a classless way to end a dining experience and leaves the diner with a bad taste in their mouth no matter how good the food was."

  • "I heard about this through word of mouth, and I did not regret it! Portions were decent, and the food was very very authentic. Make sure you try out their desert menu"

  • "Was thrilled to get a reservation when we were going to be in San Francisco for the weekend. Didn't feel it lived up to the hype. Zucca pizza was interesting - good flavors except the crust was charred black & soggy from too many toppings. Pappardelle noodles were stuck together. The green beans were drowning in oil. Highlights - the panzanella and the chocolate budino. I wish we'd had a bigger party so we could have tried more dishes. Maybe we just struck out with our choices. Service was good, music was too loud."

  • "We couldn't get in until 9:15 It is soooo worth the wait. Both wines they suggested were remarkable. We "over ordered" intentionally to try more items and "thought" we would take the remaking home.... Didn't happen...are it all. Chocolate Budino is a must for chocolate lovers! Now stop reading and make an open table reservation!"

  • "My family and I had the best dinner here during our 5 night stay in San Francisco. Everything was so delicious from the sourdough bread before dinner, excellent pizza and pastas as well as amazing vegetables, so fresh and vibrant in our appetizers. Coming from Chicago we appreciate great food and this really lived up to our expectations! Highly recommend Flour + Water."

  • "We arrived 15 minutes early for a 715 reservation and were sat 20 minutes after our reservation time, with no apology and an annoyed, hurried attitude. Our waiter was like a ghost, seemingly popping up to frighten us and then leaving and not returning. Our appetizers were fine, though not impressive as we had been led to believe, and then a half hour passed before our entrees arrived. My fiance's pizza was again, fine, though not any better than San Francisco's other "artisan" pizza as we had been led to believe. My pasta was, I will admit, fantastic, though at $22 for about three bites, particularly after such a wait, was still not worth the cost. Seemed that Flour + Water was more concerned with "coolness" than experience."

  • "Enjoyed our first time there on a perfect warm evening! The service from the start was excellent. The servers were very knowledgeable and pleasant. Our food was tasteful and excitingly presented. The seared sea bass was so tasty moist and flaky. It was a perfect night for dining."

  • "F+W has an amazing selection of Italian wine to accompany the great pastas they serve."

  • "Everything is good, but the pasta is to die for. Innovative and excellently prepared. If you like pasta, you gotta try this restaurant. Too bad you can never get in because it's so popular"

  • "We had a perfect summer meal: corn pasta and heirloom tomato salad--amazing waiter--will be back ASAP!!!!!"

  • "The staff are super friendly and the waiter helped us to pick what we should order. He also appreciated that I am a Lambrusco fan. The food was very good and very interesting. We had the caponata (sp?) and the stone fruit salad. Both were delicious - ask for bread to go with the caponata. We had a pizza margarita, also very good. Then we had the corn pasta with the chocolate mint and holy moly. It was very unique and I'm glad we got it, even though I think we ordered the duck pasta! But sometimes it's good to just go with it. The peach gelato for dessert was a nice ending to the dinner. I'd really give it a 4.5 - almost perfect except for the music level and the slight delay in getting another glass of wine. But I'll be back!"

  • "....especially for a place that has a 75-day advance booking via Open Table. The service was low-stress and impeccable. The angilotti, caprese - everything was unique and stunning - with the ironic exception of the pizza. Ours came out with a soft, almost undercooked crust. Well, undercooked for the middle two thirds, then cooked well but overly doughy with too few toppings & sauce on the outer ring. It's not that it didn't taste good - but the texture was off. Or at least it seemed that way to us. It may be that we just didn't didn't know what to expect - 'cause we thought f+w was all about super-thin crispy pies. This is a minor thing. We were still talking yesterday about the great meal we had at Flour+Water"

  • "While I'm no fan of thin crust pizza, those made by Flour and Water could make a convert of me ... delicious. Salads too are rave worthy. The service, even on a busy Saturday night, was just the right combination of attentive without becoming an annoyance. The only part of my experience that did annoy me was the extreme sound level of the patrons. I was totally unable to hear my dinner companion and left with my ears ringing from the acoustic abuse. That said, I'll keep going back for the food. It's that good. I'll be the guy in the noise protective ear muffs."

  • "Wish there had been more variety in the menu, especially for the sauces of pasta items. Every dish we ordered was heavy on cream and cheese and I got tired of eating them in the end of our meal."

  • "I had high expectations considering how hard it is to get a reservation at this place. The hostess was awesome and sat us early as they had a table available, but omg was the service bad throughout dinner. The waitress was not friendly at all, nor was anyone who came by to drop off food. They were very short with us and never cracked a smile. Side note, we are a very presentable group - engineers and business analysts. We were very friendly and completely sober so there was no reason for us to be so disrespected and given such brief and curt service. If this was Chilis, that would be one thing, but this is a much nicer restaurant so overall, very disappointed with the service, but the food was great."

  • "We were five for dinner at Flour and Water on Thursday June 12. Reservations were made 60 days in advance. The food, wine, service were outstanding. Our waiter was friendly and knew exactly what we wanted in food and amounts. We shared all the courses. At the end we told him we would like to bring him with us at our next restaurant dining experience so that he could be our waiter!"

  • "My gf & I came in for a late night anniversary dinner. As we walked in I said hi to the man behind the hostess desk, but before I could tell him my name he cut me off. He politely said that the hostess would be right with us, which was ok. We waited a couple minutes & then were denied eye contact by the hostess. We then had another failed attempt at saying hello after the hostess finally looked up and then cut me off with a fairly unpleasant "I'll be with you in a moment". Eventually after almost 10 minutes we got our hello & were taken care of. Besides the awful greeting service was 5 stars. Our server was engaging, knowledgeable & really seemed to care. The tasting menu was very impressive. It was a great progression and spot on pairings."

  • "My husband and I go to flour+water at least once every 3 months. The menu is always changing to use local and seasonal ingredients. The pizza, pasta, salad- everything is fantastic. I would order a bunch and share. We constantly refer people that visit from other cities and countries to flour+water, and they all seem to agree that it was a highlight of their SF experience."

  • "The overall experience was a great one. The food was super yummy and the service was great. We had a reservation, but the guests before us were taking longer than the hostess expected and we were sat about 20 minutes past our reservation. We didn't care, but the hostess, waitress, and manager were super apologetic about it. I appreciated them acknowledging it. To me that is a sign of really caring about your customers and great customer service. That, plus the outstanding food made for a great evening!"

  • "Desserts, service, wine, and environment was outstanding. The bread was dense and the pizza dough just ok. The homemade pasta was soft and fresh. The entree pasta dish with chicken was a little bland. I expected better and would only go back friends wanted to try it. "

  • "This is the third time we ate at Flour and Water, each time it either took us some time waiting at 5PM (as walk-in) or booked 2 months ahead of time. We continue to find the food outstanding. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. But if you are unfortunate to be seated under the speaker you will find yourself yelling through most of the dinner in order to have a normal conversation with your friends."

  • "another wonderful dinner from the great people at F+W. the quail and pork belly dish was one of the best dishes i've eaten this year. pizza dough was a little "doughier" than past times but still top notch. music got a little loud haflway through dinner. "

  • "Went to flour and water after about 3 years of trying to get the family together to go when I go back to the bay area. It was kinda worth the wait. The food was great. We ordered the rabbit raviolli (that's not what its called on the menu, but that's what it is) and the pig raviolli, as well as a marg pizza and a couple of other appis. My brother's said that the rabbit raviolli was the best pasta they had had in their life, until they had the pig raviolli. THe best part of the evening was their waitstaff. Friendly and attentive without being overbearing. We literally had to ask for nothing the entire evening. It was like they just observed our table saw what we needed and brought it to us before we could ask. They are awesome! "

  • "Had a reservation but still had to wait quite awhile. The meal was pretty awesome: the toasted almonds and the salmon crudo were outstanding. The duck tortelloni was pretty boring, however, but the salsiccia pizza was exceptionally good. The wines and beers we had, which I don't recall, were excellent."

  • "Visiting from Atlanta and hearing such great reviews we were really looking forward to trying the Neapolitan Pizza at flour + Water. Having lived in Naples Italy and working in various pizzerias we have a good understanding of Neapolitan Pizza. While our appetizers were good, the pizzas should have never left the kitchen. After waiting 30 minutes, they arrived black on the bottom, with very little cheese. I understand that Neapolitan pizza will have charring to blister the dough but not large areas burned black. When we complained to the general manager, he explained this was how Neapolitan pizzas were normally prepared. My understanding is that pizziaolo fell behind and did not know how to operate his wood burning oven."

  • "We arrived 15 minutes early, but couldn't get the hostess to bring us a drink for over 20 minutes and were seated about 30 minutes after our reservation. The wine list is a little over priced given the wines, they were out of the one we wanted, so the server kindly suggested a wine that was 50% more expensive. When we described what we wanted he still recommended the one wine which was way over our price point. The pasta dishes were the best, the beet ravoli especially. The pizza was burned so there was just charred flavor. Throughout the meal the server was a little rude, and inattentive. In the end this place did not live up to the hype, and beyond that just wasn't that great - especially given the prices this place was not worth it."

  • "Been hearing great things re: F+W, and it lived up to the expectations. Casual but foodie crowd, friendly towards families (seriously, I didn't get to eat this kind of food as a kid) counted two families with 3 kids each, I suppose the higher-end pizza ingredients were appreciated. Started with the lamb crudo, amazing - served with a soft boiled yolk-of-perfection, it was rich & creamy with a subtle lamb flavor. Followed by the funghi and fontina pizza and the pasta pappardelle w/ pork, we were in for rich and elegant eats. We finished with the chocolate budino. Overall, the crudo and pasta were my faves, the budino a close second. Casual but cool dining, a superb and wonderfully executed menu, kind service - a great dining experience!"
