  • "We try to have a reservation here every two months or so. We love that it's a block away from us, and that the menu is always changing. We recommend always ordering a pizza and a pasta. Sharing is hard to do because you want it all for yourself:)"

  • "I loved this place and would go back anytime I'm in SF. The pizzas were heavenly. Crust had the right amount of chew and tons of flavor. The braised lamb pasta sounded like it would have an ungainly mix of flavors, but was outstanding. The only off note was that we had to wait about 20 minutes for our table, but hostess was very nice about it. The rest of the service was efficient."

  • "Really enjoyed their appetizers and pastas, but the pizzas were just OK IMHO."

  • "I have been to Flour and Water many times-food is usually excellent-portions are on the small side. This time-presentation of food was "bizarre"-creatively challenged. The pasta came out in what looked like a cereal bowl not a pasta bowl and was literally plopped in front of my friend with absolutely no attempt to make it even a bit visually appealing. Then the Orechiette pasta came to me on a relatively large plate and was situated in a crescent design around the edge of plate with olive oil sloppily dripped on the inside of the plate..75% of the plate was empty..it looked very weird.......As an artist, sommelier and a chef myself.........someone wasn't attentive to the plates coming out of the kitchen......sort of a mess."

  • "Once again disappointed by rotating servers. Meal came before drinks. Asked if we wanted a refill after dinner despite rotating server passing twice and seeing empty glasses."

  • "I have wanted to eat at Flour + Water for a couple of years now and saw an open reservation for the the same day aa do thought I would snap it up. We were early and the host directed across the street to Tick Dog for a pre dinner cocktail which was fun. We came back and ordered the misto, wild boar flatbread, cod, and chocolate desert. Everything was just ok. Nothing really stood out for me except the wine which was a recommendation from our waitress."

  • "Very warm and inviting atmosphere. Staff is young but very attentive and super friendly. Excellent food. OMG, the home baked bread is a dream.Great crowd. Wonderful wines. What I liked the most was that the tables were not 2" close to each other. Everyone had some privacy, which is nice when I go out for dinner. It shows me that money is not everything for the owner. I will be back."

  • "If you like pasta, this is the place to go. We ordered four different pastas to share among the table (four of us). We should have ordered one of each of the six on the menu. They were all great, but the favorites were the oxtail and rabbit pastas. The portions were a little small, but we could always order more. Besides, we opted to try a pizza which was excellent as well. We were 20 minutes late for our reservation because our son decided to throw a tantrum as we were leaving the door and we hit traffic. The restaurant only holds reservations for minutes, so we lost our reservation. They were very accommodating, and we got the next available table about 15-20 minutes later."

  • "I would give this place 3.5 Stars. This restaurant came highly recommended to use from several people. The place was quite packed and we had to wait a little bit until our table was ready even though we had reservations. When we were seated no one came to our table for about 15 minutes. The waitress was friendly though when she finally did arrive. The appetizers (pork belly and smoked trout) were very good. The pasta with mussels and clams was the best dish of the night. The cabbage with pancetta and breadcrumbs was also a good dish. However, the oxtail pasta was not very good. the flavor of the red wine overpowered the dish. This place is not bad, but not as good as the hype."

  • "Upon entering the restaurant we were ignored by the hostess and manager for a good 15 second conversation they were having. Luckily when they were done we were seated almost 10 minutes before our reservation! Service was prompt and informative, we got the tasting menu. I was expecting mind-blowing pasta for a place called flour+water. Everything was good but not amazing--particularly the tortellinis which were way under al dente and the broth so salty I think it was a mistake. It's strange that this type of place doesn't change the silverware for each course eaten, I would expect that from a TGIFridays. Each course came out piping hot, which impressed us the most. Overall a nice experience, but I think the restaurant is a little overhyped."

  • "Inconvenient neighborhood. Snotty service. Food is pretty good. Probably won't go back. I cannot understand why it's so hard to get a reservation at this place."

  • "Had two friends visiting from San Diego who both work in kitchens there so felt like I had to take them somewhere food driven and I knew would be a sure bet for deliciousness. Been to Flour + Water a handful of times and it has never disappointed. Tried the pasta for the first time (normally always get pizza) and it was amazing. Great food and service."

  • "We made a reservation for 10:30 PM a month in advance because the restaurant was already booked out. However we decided to try doing a walk in at around 8 pm. We did not have to wait long and we're seated by 8:30 even though the restaurant was completely packed. The hostess was very kind and offered us a glass of very nice wine. The food was exquisite. We ordered an amazing margharita pizza to share, and agnolotti dal plin and a burrata. Everything was perfect and if you like European sized portions the serving size was absolutely perfect. Overall, we had a fabulous time."

  • "3 of us did the tasting menu and were not disappointed. I thought it was a great value for 65 per person. Only one dish that didn't blow my mind, a little too much salt, but everything else was wonderful. Others have mentioned that a lot of the dishes had similar flavors but what else do you expect from a pasta tasting? If you love pasta its a must try. Service was excellent."

  • "The atmosphere is warm and comfortable, casual with lots of wood and nice lighting. We were seated immediately and the server was super prompt and knowledgable. Wine list all Italian wines, server helpfully suggested good pairings. No hard bar and wine lovers might find the all Italian selection a bit limiting. We chose a simple pasta with balsamic and lots of butter...sounded too simple but was heavenly. The wood fired pizza -- pork sausage with broccolini -- had amazing flavor and perfect crust, honestly the best pizza I've ever had. The side of greens was equally delicious, and dessert -- rhubarb crostini (actually small tarts) with crème fraiche was absolute heaven, not too sweet. All in all I would highly recommend this place!"

  • "My daughter loved this restaurant a few years ago, so I was looking forward to trying F+W when she was in town again. The food was okay but didn't knock me out. The noise level was painful. I left the restaurant with a headache and sore throat from trying to speak with our dining companions. I do not understand the hype. I've had better pasta at Perbacco, other pizzas/antipasti and entrees at A16 etc. And the ambience totally destroyed any desire on my part to return. As Michael Bauer points out, excessive noise levels in restaurant is the number one complaint he receives and F+W deserves to be on that list. Too loud music doesn't add to the energy level, it leads to patrons not returning."

  • "I loved it almost like most visits, the ambiance is always great the service is the best! In SF (I know that it sounds a little out there but it's true) but .... It was the first time that the food did not blow my mind. We chose the tastings and at least two out of the dishes were ok and it's not the end of the world but this place is so amazing so it wasn't the best surprise"

  • "My husband and I had heard many good things about Flour and Water so we were excited to try it! After snagging a Sunday night reservation over a month in advance, we arrived at he restaurant and were seated promptly. The service was good and the food was pretty good, but not amazing. The most disappointing part was that we ordered two appetizers, two entrees, wine and dessert and we left feeling hungry. We are not huge eaters, but the portions were very, very small. After spending $150 on a meal or two, you don't expect to be hungry. I didn't understand what all the hype was about!"

  • "My wife and I had a wonderful meal here a over a year ago. It was great food and a wonderful experience. We just took friends there and what a change. The music was really loud, the light was insufficient to read he menu, a couple of dishes were way too salty and we almost paid for a bottle of wine we didn't order. When we complained about the salt the server just asked if we wanted it taken away.. In their glory days they seemed to really care. Now, not so much."

  • "After so much hype, I was pretty disappointed by this place. Our pasta was great, but our pizza was burnt and almost inedible. It's not a bad restaurant, but it's way overrated. There are a million places in the city that do this better for a more reasonable price."

  • "We anticipated this dinner after reading multiple favorable reviews in the Chronicle, but we're very disappointed by our visit, primarily because of the ambiance ( overly loud unappealing music), but also the scattered service, and minuscule portions of pasta which we're not as innovative as we had expected. The tables were also too closely spaced, exposing us to the loud bratty kid practically sitting with us. Wouldn't return or recommend it."

  • "this was my first time eating at flour +water and i was skeptical about all the hype. now i am a believer. it was definitely one of the best meals i have had in my 10 years in the bay area. the food was interesting but not over the top, flavorful and perfectly accented, the portions were exactly how i like my food (enough to really give you a taste, but not so much that you leave feeling gross) and the waitstaff was super friendly and attentive. i really really enjoyed the entire experience. it was exceptional."

  • "We went with 4 people, had a pizza and roasted veggies as an app, pastas for mains and 2 side dishes. With desserts we were all well fed but not stuffed and every dish was fantastic!"

  • "This is my go-to place when I want to impress the socks off visitors, celebrate a milestone, or just chill out with the husband. The pastas and the pizzas are the show pieces of the menu. That said, the truth is the whole menu is fantastic. Our typical dining strategy is "we'll have everything on the menu (ok, maybe only 2 of the 4 pizzas but certainly all the pasta dishes and a couple of appetizers)" (easily accomplished with a table of 4 or more). This is the ONLY restaurant in the City when told "you'll need to wait XX minutes for your table" when my reply is "please open a bottle of wine for me, we'll be outside when you are ready to seat us." Love this place to pieces!"

  • "While visiting from the Tampa Bay area, I managed to grab a last minute reservation due to a cancellation. It turned into the best dinner I've ever had! Could not stop ordering pasta dish after pasta dish. The best handmade pasta... Ever. This is a definite must visit. I will be thinking about this experience until my next visit to SF."

  • "A weekend of dining in SF reached its apex at Flour and Water. It's hard to find issues in either the food or service. We started with giardiniera and pickled egg, and it was a simple but well balanced combination of creamy and briny with an added layer of richness from the egg yolk. The papardelle with braised pork, cabbage and mustard sauce was very satisfying thanks to perfectly al dente house-made noodles and luscious little shreds of pork in a mustard sauce that never overwhelmed other flavors. The rucola pizza was close to the most perfect pie I've ever had. Often bland alone, the ricotta is marvelously rich and more flavorful when combined with olives; the chili and arugula add two different kinds of spice. Loved it."

  • "I have been so excited to eat here for about a year now, and I think my expectations were too great. We ordered the full tasting menu, and while each course was good, not a single one made me wish I had more of it. Nothing was bad, but I was not wowed in the slightest. I would not pay that price again to eat that meal."
