Diner Reviews
  • "The menu was very innovative. My husband had char grilled octopus and I had a seafood sausage appetizer. Both were very good. On to more seafood! Had grilled cobia with corn and tomatillo sauce and poached grouper for our entrees. Fish was absolutely wonderful - fresh and cooked perfectly."

  • "We went to the Florida Cookery for Mother's Day brunch. The food was decent, but nothing was amazing or fantastic. I can't complain, but there was no "WOW" factor either. Brunch included an omelet station, salmon, lamb, bacon, eggs, sausage, fries, pasta salad, baked chicken, veggies, Caesar salad, and a few other items. I thought it was strange that they chose to serve lamb at the carving station, as opposed to beef or pork. The desserts were not memorable at all. Brunch did include one complimentary mimosa or bellini, which was nice. The baked chicken looked underdone...very pink, so I was afraid to eat it. I've had much better brunches in the South Beach area but this wasn't bad for $49.00 pp (plus tax and 18% gratuity added). "

  • "Really, this was the best thing we ate. My friend and I ate here for out last night in Florida and it was a perfectly fine meal. We are both very food oriented and somewhat picky and were a little disappointed about some of our choices but overall the food is better than most we had in Miami beach. I agree with others that it costs a lot for the quality but I think that's about the location rather than the food itself. Our waiter was very attentive, the pool area is actually quite nice and we had a great time."

  • "The adventure started off by trying to find the rest. When we called the rest, they said it was located on 15th street so we went up & down 15th street to find it, turns out they were on Collins. Once we went inside, someone asked us to go upstairs which we did. When we went up, there was no one. Finally went inside the kitchen. The waiter told us that lunch is served downstairs. So, we walked down. The waiter took our order on time and the food came out fairly quickly. After we were done eating, the waiter disappeared and the plates weren't taken off the table nor did anyone come to ask us if we needed any more drinks or dessert. No one came for the check either. After we asked for the check, it came about an hour later. Won't go back."

  • "I really enjoyed Florida Cookery, outside patio seating is nice. I think for lunch or brunch would be nice as well. We did have dinner and i was really surprised and excited to try the different appetizers. We had the three different meat empanadas which included alligator, AMAZING! We also had the pork cheek with plantains...all very good. Service was also very good, Joel was attentive and enjoyed chatting with him."

  • "The evening was dreadful. I requested a regular menu on New Year's Eve when I made the reservations and again when I confirmed, but was seated with the set menu. The menu was blasé and not very Florida with some black-eyed peas thrown on a plate and 1/2 bite of lobster claw on the surf and turf. (The filet was good.) The waiter had difficulty understanding what we wanted as well as explaining what the restaurant offered, so it was not until I returned to write this review that I understood that the $30.00 beverage package included all premium drinks and not just house wines. The restaurant was loud and the service inconsistent. One minute plates coming too fast, the next, water glasses not filled. We left early to go elsewhere."

  • "Looking for a good place to dine (food is the most important criteria for us), and this was recommended by NYTimes but did not appear on any top ten lists for Miami. For a $200 dinner + wine for two, you can do much better than this in Miami (if not in Miami Beach). The ingredients are good. But, the food is underwhelming. The grouper appetizer had ingredients that didn't appear to be going well together. The Ceviche was the most yummy of all dishes. The 2012 Wind Gap pinot was not preserved well (a bit sour). The main waiter was friendly and we had a great time talking to him, but didn't not know much about the food or wine. We were served also by multiple people (at least three) which was odd."

  • "We were very disapointed. The Lobster was Cola and we got no Instrument to Open it. The Paella was dry, the mussels were all closed. For 58 Dollar we had o only Rice ."

  • "This is was by far some of the worst service I ever had in Miami (despite the manager apologizing!) .. We basically had to stop servers as they were walking by to order as no one ever came to our table. When we finally ordered drinks, my friends ordered strawberry mojitos and 20 minutes later (after asking about our drinks) the manager finally delivered the raspberry mojitos our waiter ordered. We had to wait for everything despite the place only being moderately filled. It felt like no one had any control of when food would come out of the kitchen or what would show up. Overall the food was good (except the paella) but didn't make up for poor service and really long waits for everything!"

  • "we had reservations weeks in advance for Thursday night during Art Basel. When we arrived for our 8:45 reservation they told us the restaurant had been rented out for a private party, but they had devised makeshift seating on an outdoor walkway in a second floor wind tunnel between two buildings. Tables were awful, there was no atmosphere, and they expected us to pay their $40+ for entrees. An apology was offered, but that was it. There had been no advance warning, even though they called us that morning to confirm our reservation. We left."

  • "While I gave one stars across the board because you must check something the truth is stranger than fiction. Never got to eat at Florida Cookery because even though reservation for 8:45 pm was confirmed at 4:30 pm The resturant bumped all reservations for a last minute art basel event. So I could sit in the breezeway and order from their menu Or go to their other resturant called the Catch. While everyone was polite when our menus flew away even when weighed down with plates we opted for the other restaurant. So, usual south beach silliness masquerading as a service business"

  • "I left a review yesterday but it was removed??!! We had a very expensive (for 3 @$140 plus tip) lunch that was lacking in all areas. The empanadas arrived clearly with different fillings from menu and servers description. It took asking 4 times to get what was in them. The food was NOT fresh, VERY salty, heavy and not the quality that the prices indicate. The server was clueless and while we did not harshly complain - the table behind us did. If you are going to charge high prices in S Beach then you should work to serve good food. One of the most disappointing meals I've had in S. Beach. Good service could have helped bad food a bit but bad service made it all worse. Think before dining here and peruse the menu w/ open eyes."

  • "Found this restaurant via the Slow Food Miami links and loved it ! The menu is interesting, the food very tasty, the products used of great quality. The staff was warm, enthusiastic and helpful but not over-bearing and seemed genuinely concerned by the quality of the food which was being served. The athmosphere is pleasant but relaxed, the decoration and lighting really nice and - most important - the noise level was kept to a minimum: which allowed for a normal dinner conversation without lip-reading or shouting. Quite unusual and welcome for a Miami / S. Beach restaurant."

  • "There are some natives to South Florida that really don't like to go deep into south beach because of the tourist attraction it has even though there happens to be some of the best chiefs in the world. I recommend you the Florida Cookery as on the fringe of an attraction with its flare for the natives without the noise of tourist and certainly excellence in it menu. What the Florida Cookery definitely has is substance in it's menu and most of a fantastic taste across the world combined into a presentation that is very hard to duplicate anywhere. Its majestic scenery just adds an element of elegance with a feel of comfort which does always goes well together but, the exception will be the Florida Cookery."

  • "I was there when the main restaurant was having a private event, but they were serving on the patio. The food and service were fine but it was just not busy enough for a weekend night. Adjusting some prices and presenting different menu options might bring a bigger crowd. Not bad for a quiet dinner but there are other options in the area with more energy."

  • "Wonderful meal and drinks! Best Miami Spice meal ever! But would have preferred their pretty indoor dining area upstairs. This is Miami Beach, we spend enough time outside."

  • "The restaurant is located in the stunning James Hotel, worth a visit alone for the beautiful renovation of this Deco landmark. For lunch on a Saturday, the inside restaurant was closed, so we ate on the patio. The service was very friendly and attentive(especially by SoBe standards!). The menu is an imaginative mix of updated Florida favorites. The creamy, almost ricotta-like burrata mozzarella on fried green tomatoes was a standout, as were the BBQ ribs appetizer. The key lime tart for dessert was tiny, but delicious. As to be expected for a South Beach hotel restaurant, prices weren't cheap, but not outrageous either. I wouldn't go for lunch on a Tuesday, but for special occasions when in the area, I'd definitely go back."

  • "I went here by recommendation of a friend who I consider a foodie. She said it was great for dinner and wanted to try brunch. That was a bad idea. From her omelette that was just a tasteless egg white slab with the veggies thrown on top to them trying to charge us individually for the unlimited mimosas it was a horror show. We were the last to leave since we had so many issues... Never again"

  • "I had an enjoyable dinner there a few months ago when they first opened. The restaurant at that time was upstairs and inside, To my surprise, the restaurant is now downstairs, outside seating only. This was supossed to be a special girls night out for my friends birthday. No one wanted to sit outside and sweat while dining in 90 degree heat especially when we've gotten all dressed up. The place had a very cheesy atmosphere, mainly hotel guest and out of towners. Not at all what we were expecting. Also, very uncomfortable hard chairs, dark table, the staff didnt seem to be very concerned and so we got up and left. We had dinner somewhere else (INSIDE with airconditioning)"

  • "Was there for Miami Spice as an opportunity to try it out since we live in the area, but unfortunately it was not what we expected: Red wine way too warm (as if it was in the sun), our entrees came 8 minutes apart (even the kitchen was definitely not busy). Entree portions were very small and nothing special at all, which I would have expected with such raving reviews. I had the sorbet dessert, you get to pick 2 flavors and the key lime flavor was not edible - too sour and bitter."

  • "We wanted a reservation here at 8 but open table only allowed a time for 6 or 9pm which led us to believe the reservations were filling up. When we showed up at 8:45 we found the indoor dining area was closed for a private event and the only seating was outside in the pool area. The only other people there were 3 people that had been in the pool and one other table. There were no fans to keep customers cool due to the inconvenience of not being able to dine indoors. The food was good - but not excellent and not worth having to eat in the hot summer night. Would have like to have been told outdoor seating only in advance. The conch chowder & Oxtail were the best dishes we had that night - would order that again if ever went back."

  • "Really enjoyed Kris Wessel's latest culinary endeavor - this is a clear winner, and the setting certainly helps. This is where Miami Spice works its magic; I definitely want to return to Florida Cookery again!"

  • "We enjoyed our Miami Spice lunch very much but found other menu items pretty expensive. More specials would mean more visits, for sure! Kris Wessel's tremendous talent shows through in his new location, especially his gift with salads and veggies - though the little key lime tart was tremendous, too."

  • "After all the reviews I read, Florida Cookery was a complete disappointment. Food was not very good, they were out of multiple dishes on the menu, our waiter was nice, but had no clue what he was doing...all at a ridiculous price."

  • "Unfortunately we chose to sit outside in the evening for dinner and towards the end of the dinner it started pouring rain. We were moved into the semi enclosed space that was hot and there was little air moving. I asked if they had any bug spray because the bugs were really biting. I was told that they had run out of bug spray the night before. The fish I ordered was the snapper of the evening and it was overcooked, but presented well. The restaurant is in a good location in Miami Beach and in a very nice hotel."

  • "I was returning to this restaurant for dinner as I had really enjoyed my first time. Bad news was the chef had decided to move the venue from its amazing-decor, dim-lights upstairs to an almost poolside, kinda-hot outside area. As it got dark, the place came to life: it is beautiful; I did not miss the upstairs so much - a cool breeze helped. Service: knowledgable, friendly, alert but not pushy. Appetizers and entrees: excellent. Dessert (coconut panna cotta w watermelon sauce and mango ice cream): a VERY mixed experience. I would recommend FC, with a caveat: call and check whether the chef has decided to change your dining experience since you last heard/read of this place. Predictability is a big part of what makes any review worth it!"

  • "This is the third time I have been here and it is not going to get my money again because of the service. The waiter was slow, it was way too dark to see the food, and the hostess was not concerned about our happiness. The irony was that it was not even busy at the time. It is too bad because the food is great, Good luck."

  • "Upon arriving for dinner we discovered only the outdoor patio was open. We were dressed "smart casual" in long slacks and collared shirts. The 7:30 PM temperature was 88 degrees with high humidity and the only thing warmer than the weather was our red wine. Their signature lobster dish was not available. We went for the grouper instead. It was over cooked and dry. The waiter did his best to make us happy. The manager wouldn't come near our table, even though he was aware there were problems. Obviously, the owner or head chef need to stop by the place now and then to keep things up to par. There to celebrate my friend's 59th birthday, Florida Cookery was a big disappointment."

  • "Very nice place in a very quiet relaxing setting, with fantastic food. The night we were there they obviously were shorthanded and the service was slooooooooow... Just a pity, the food was so good, but you lose count of it when it takes twenty minutes after your first course to get the second. We never tried dessert: fifteen minutes after they dropped the menus they hadn't been back for the order, so we got the hostess to get us the bill and we left. We will try it again..."

  • "When we arrived to the hotel, the people at the front of the hotel gave us the wrong directions to where the restaurant was in the Hotel. Then we get to the restaurant on a Florida evening where it is hot and humid and they only have outdoor setting. No fans and no air is moving, so we are sweating through the entire meal. It was so hot and humid you could not enjoy anything. Not to mention, we were running late and called to see if we could change the reservation by a 1/2 hour. we were given a difficult time. When we arrived, there was no one there and when we left the place was only 25% full. The food is mediocre at best. The service is horrendous. Run don't walk from this place."

  • "Mediocre food=huge mound of micro sprouts dominated plate of micro shaved hearts of palm rounds on the bottom of the plate with with barely a speck of a brazil nut on top of the sprouts; mushy coconut rice with entree; dry pineapple "barely a hint of" rum cake. Fair service=initial server poor; subsequent server good--had to twice request and hail down someone to initially get a glass of water and twice requested to get complimentary bread in a fairly empty dining "room" (3-4 tables of 2-4 diners). Dining "room" is covered opened area with two standing oscillating floor fans. Signage directing to the ground floor outdoor dining area is poor due to diners confusion of going to an indoor upstairs dining room."

  • "The food was seasoned to perfection. Everything had a kick to eat; nothing was bland. The oxtails was tender and tasty. Even though the Maui Maui was not extraordinarily displayed, it made up for it with the seasoning. The quail salad had lychee fruit in it and all the sweetness went so well well with the other flavors. I can go on forever with positive words about my experience because everything exceeded my expectations. It was a slow evening and I received great attention from all staff members."

  • "It was hard to find the restaurant, the address is only written on the building (set back a bit from the street) and there is no exterior signage for the restaurant. Sadly the lobster entree was sold out when we ordered, perhaps a heads up prior to looking and setting our hearts on that would have been nice. The foie gras appetizer was great, both a warm seared portion and a cold pate. The service was good, despite being initially served the wrong tables' entrees. A trendy yet relatively quiet outdoor dining area was perfect for a date. As a local, I always find it a bit off putting to see tip included on a check for less than 6 people; but the server did clearly explain that gratuity was included, not always the case on South Beach."
