Diner Reviews
  • "Had a very good meal, a little too noisy for conversation. "

  • "Flora has a great location, across the street from the Fox Theater, and we were surprised again at how good Flora is, especially for the occasional trip to Oakland and a pre-show dinner. Drinks at the bar are finely crafted, the wait short, the staff attentive to our needs(like getting to the show in time!), and the food was particularly good. We tried a variety of appetizers, salads, and entrees(the burger-great; fish-very good, and the pork chop-outstanding), and found the experience very enjoyable. The room is large, can get a bit loud, and despite being seated next to the front door(the only open table due to the pre-show crowd), the meal was well paced, and expertly served."

  • "The food was good. However, the service was lacking. We may go again but there will have to be a good reason."

  • "The noise level is really kind of a problem but the food is great. The caramel pudding is fantastic!"

  • "The service was very good and the appetizers were delicious. However, when our entrees arrived we weren't as impressed. Not as much flavor and interest at the 2 appetizers we had just ordered (fresh mozzarella and the steak tartare were the appetizers)."

  • "don't hesitate.. order everything, you won't regret it. local produce, great meats, fabulous cocktails, and scrumtious deserts."

  • "Flora is, overall, very very good. The toast points with pate were great. The dessert was wonderful. However, my steak was ordered medium rare, It arrived very well done I sent it back for a medium rare replacement. It was replaced with a steak with just a hint of pink. As my dining companion had just about finished, I accepted the dish. No apology was offered, no concern shown. For such a fine dining establishment, it failed in the basic medium rare preparation of an other wise excellent piece of meat. I would not return to this establishment."

  • "Very close to the Paramont in downtown Oakland. We enjoyed dinner and the service was excellent."

  • "Food was very good but not necessarily notable, but I do realize we are quite spoiled about food. But what we enjoyed most was that they took our comment from the open table reservation, and printed out a special menu just for my husband's special birthday. "Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm 64?""

  • "Great service and wine selection but the food I expected to be far better my braised short ribs seemed to have been reheated and the place is known for food quality. The best thing was the atmosphere and service"

  • "Concert at the Fox made parking very difficult. VERY dark in the restaurant VERY loud Expensive Great chicken- greasy croutons and oily salad. Will try it again for brunch but overall not as expected"

  • "everything we had here was great -- salad was great, the bollito misto (?) was terrific, and although we were having the apple tart for dessert, our waiter brought us a taste of the caramel pudding which was heavenly and made us regret our choice. next time."

  • "My most recent dinner at Flora (Tuesday, March 25) was excellent. I have dined at Flora four times and this had to be the best of the four. I've enjoyed the previous meals, but this one was exceptional. Our waitress was top notch and patient in describing the parts of a dish which we might wish to alter (dairy, dressing, etc.) I am already looking forward to my next visit."

  • "Booked dinner here as a good mid-point to meet friends BARTing in from SF. We started with drinks at Fauna - they made some delicious cocktails. We then had dinner with starters, mains and dessert. Everything was delicious. . .I rated 4 stars instead of 5 because I couldn't help feel like we were a burden to our waitress. She wasn't outright rude, but she wasn't friendly either. Despite that, we'd definitely go back."

  • "I took a team member here to celebrate her new position and to thank her for her work - Flora noted that on specialized their menu with a note - how wonderful!"

  • "Being from San Francisco, we are a bit spoiled but when we stumble across a restaurant like Flora, we really enjoy it. Nested in a continuing emerging area, Flora offers a solid choice of imaginative foods, good wine and a nice ambiance. If you are in that area, this would be our top recommendation."

  • "Very crowded, dark, and noisy. Could not see my food or my companions. Hard to hear them. Tiny expensive martinis. Tiniest I have been served. Will not return or recommend."

  • "This is my favorite brunch spot in the East Bay! The food is consistently good and I always leave with a smile on my face. This time I got the shrimp etoufee followed by the donuts with 3 dipping sauces."

  • "Salted Caramel Pudding - one of the best desserts I've ever had. My husband and I always order it."

  • "It took over 15 minutes in order for first to receive our first drink. Our waitress was never to be found throughout the meal. When our food finally arrived my steak was lukewarm. My girlfriend's burger was cooked well but noticed it did not have a tomato slice so she asked for one. I realize the question seemed to be a bit odd but the expression on the waitress face was a bit insulting. She told us that Flora only uses local ingredients and tomatoes were not in season, which would have been nice to know before we ordered the burger. Towards the end of our dinner they kept trying to take away our plates like as if they needed the table for someone else. My Girlfriends birthday dinner was ruined."

  • "I was here in January, house salad was great, bass was cooked to perfection and the sides were perfectly paired. The pork and spazle were also executed flawlessly (one of the best dishes I have ever had, the rib more so than the chop). The meats were moist and full of flavor, tender, and everything came together beautifully. The servers are colorful, a little snarky/edgy, but it works. This second time we dove into the cocktail list, a very fun list. The quality of the food preparation was shockingly disappointing this round. The bass entree was over cooked, the bass fritters were bland, the spazle was burned, the pork belly & chicken were good. My guess is a chef QC'd our first meal and we only had a cook this time. I'll give another shot."

  • "Service well timed but I didn't like being called sweetheart by the waitress. I know she meant well but it's just not me. Not enough light and at one point my sister had to pull out her keychain flashlight. Also difficult to talk to anyone who is not sitting directly next to you. Even then, have to talk right in their ear. But the food is soooooo good!!!!"

  • "My wife and I have gone to Flora a handful of times and have never been let down. The drinks (Brooklyn and Boulevardier) are amazing, food is tasty (even for my vegetarian wife) and the ambience is great. Dona and Thomas have done it again with this gem of a restaurant."

  • "This was my second trip to Flora. We arrived on time and we're s seated immediately. Both me and my date thought the food was excellent. Nice atmosphere. Nice level was a little high, but overall loved it."

  • "I love Flora. Have lived in the neighborhood for 6 years and luckily discovered it my first week. The food is ridiculous (swoon). The drinks are evil (Carter Beats the Devil my friends - you need to drink this, trust me). The service can be hit and miss, sometimes pretty slow and very occasionally with attitude, but usually the service is OK, and every once in a while it's awesome. The only down side: the Noise. This place can get loud. They need a cork wall or something. Can sometimes be hard to hear your dinner partner. But I keep coming back, so that tells you something..."

  • "We had a very nice dinner with good comments from the group on the lovely dinners. Sea Bass, Lamb shank, and steak. Pricey, but you get what you pay for....sometimes. Nice bar next door while we waited for a 5:30 reservation."

  • "I have been going to Flora since it opened. The staff has always been the epitome of professional and friendly. Not this time. zero enthusiasm. I did not feel like any one was glad we came. bummer"

  • "Loved Flora. Everything was great, drinks, food, french fries. The bartenders were attentive and astute. A little challenging to have a conversation with the noise level being so high. But don't let that deter you."

  • "Went there on a Thursday night for dinner for four. Three started with the Cream of Parsnips soup and me with the Little gems salad. Others loved the soup and my salad was very good. Entrees were two steaks, peking duck breast and the white seabass. The steaks were cooked perfectly and were great pieces of meat. There were no comments on the duck that I did not try so I assume it was just OK. Unfortunately, my seabass was way over cooked. In their effort to sear the skin to a crisp texture, the flesh of the seabass ended up a tough dry piece of fish. Such a shame for a nice piece of fish. However, the cannelini bean and turnip greens that fish was served on was very tasty. Save room for the fantastic caramel pudding for dessert."

  • "We went for a birthday dinner. It was a surprise that they printed happy birthday and her name on our menus!! That was very cute! They also put a candle in our dessert. The biggest problem was the noise level. We could barely hear each other right across form one another. Sort of spoiled the evening. The food was good--took awhile to get our order--after some time they offered us bread (which was very good!). The food itself was good, the service and noise level was not great."

  • "Party of six ordered a variety of starters and entrees. Starters were delectable and enough to share among 5 or 6, for a taste. Entrees varied in portion so we shared with one another. Lamb, burger, steak and duck. The food was consistently tasty though there were no prize winners among the items we ordered. Dessert was near perfection with the earl grey panna cotta. Service at the bar was terrific and knowledgeable, busing quite punctual; table side was a bit lackluster and not always terribly attentive or interested in sharing enthusiasm for the food and/or restaurant. Still left a 20%+ tip, in hopes of encouraging increased interest in service. We'd return but opt to sit at the bar for friendly service and starters and wine."

  • "Flora is a trendy restaurant in downtown Oakland. It is extremely hard to park near the restaurant and they do not offer valet service. We had a reservation for 8:15 but didn't get our table until after 8:30. It was hard to see the menu and it was very hard to hear. Our food was good (with the exception of the sturgeon). The duck breast was outstanding. The wait staff were continually trying to clear plates or glasses from our table before we were finished so there was a rushed feeling to the whole evening. Given the prices on the menu, this was very annoying. I would not return to this restaurant unless substantial changes were made."

  • "The location, across from Fox Theater, is easy to find. The food was good (I had the steak). And the cocktail specials were abundant."

  • "I rated the ambience only "fair" as it's way too dark in the restaurant. More candle-power at each tavble would fix that."

  • "For anyone curious about checking out Flora, I would say this place is hit or miss. The menu on V-Day was Prix Fixe (This wasn't a problem) however I was really looking forward to enjoying items off the regular menu. Dinner consisted of veal carpaccio and a shrimp style salad to start, followed by a cioppino style dish and veal ravioli as mains. All dishes were mediocre none amounting to a wonderful explosion to share with friends. Food presentation was perfect and the ambiance was great for a romantic dinner. One big miss was the volatile corkage fee. I called in advance to check if this even restaurant offered corkage (some do not). Over the phone the price was $20 at the restaurant it changed to $30. Big let down. Good luck!"

  • "Our food was very good. However, the service was not. Our waitress was pleasant but not on the ball. After ordering our drinks and meal we waited awkwardly for over 30 minutes before asking the manager to check on our beverages. . It seemed fairly apparent that our order was never submitted after it was taken. When our drinks/meal did come it was without any apology for the delay. The waitress seemed spaced out and less than attentive. In fact all the staff seemed oddly indifferent."
