  • "I've been to Flex many times and usually have a great time but this night was off. The waitress ignored us and the bus boy broke two glasses at our feet and it never really got cleaned up. The mussels were really tiny and the portions much smaller than usual. I'd still go back because of previous good experiences but that night was not a great one."

Would definitely ask if you get a mussels dish that's cooked in a chowder or thicker sauce to be cooked well done to make sure they are really cooked thoroughly. That said, really great food, great service, and creative twists to the classic mussels dish."

  • "Arrived right on time for our reservation, but a bored hostess told us we would need to wait for our table, which took about 10 minutes. The reception/bar area is packed and so this was an awkward wait. Once seated, out waiter was great but dinner only so-so. I had the Little Neck, which arrived in a skillet packed with clams and mussels, but it was sitting under hot lights or a broiler too long. The mussels and clams were tiny, shriveled and dry. There was only about two or three tablespoons of broth in the bottom of the skillet. It was tasty but I had to make my way through too many desiccated shellfish to get there. My daughter had better luck. Her San Daneiele was much better - mussels were huge and plump with oceans of broth."

  • "Went here early evening to eat for my birthday with coworkers. Ordered the san Danielle mussels with cream and prosciutto and onions.The broth was great! Mussels were a bit small but cleaned well. The bread was warm and chewy, went great with the broth. The policy of the restaurant is a bit rigid. My party was 4 and three was there at the time of reservation. They wouldn't seat us until the 4th was there which was ridiculous because the restaurant was empty. Flex mussels open at 530. My reservations was for 530! Wasted precious time to eat. We could of ordered a lot more but we had to go to another event so we rushed. Missed opportunity!!"

  • "We went for mussels but the experience was so much more. While we had to wait a little for our reservation, the entire experience made it worth it. The mussels were fabulous. We also shared crab cakes that were wonderful. The waiter was helpful and loud enough to be heard. And the donuts….oh wow!! Will definitely be going back."

  • "My husband and I had a wonderful dinner. The calamari appetizer was large enough for two and I had the Thai mussels which was delicious. The lemon meringue dessert was faboulous. The waiters were energetic, helpful and very friendly. We will return."

  • "The mussel dishes are varied, unique and uniformly excellent. Although the other dishes are very good the choices are limited and basically simple. I found the beet salad notably good. For desert you must have the fresh donuts which can be had in a variety of fillings with a wonderful dipping sauce. Plan ahead, reservations are hard to come by. The only negative was the noise level which made conversation difficult. The dining crowd is definitely on the young side. If you're not a member of this group, depending on your psyche, dinner at Flex will either make you feel younger or much older."

  • "This is one of my neighborhood favorites. There is a small but good selection of East and West Coast oysters, and the PEI mussels bask in a variety of complex broths. Even the bread delights, and it's perfect for dipping into the mussels broth! The salted caramel and lemon-filled doughnuts are a delicious way to end the meal. The cheerful art makes any seat cozy, but to enjoy an open view, ask for a table under the skylight. Limited street dining is available as well, and the bar area, though cramped, is bright and lively."

  • "Excellent restaurant. Best moules frites I have ever tasted. I recommend to start with a crab cake. Then order the mussels, provencale preparation. Is delicious. The only critic is the restricted list of Belgian beers. They should have the four classic trappists, all varietes (ie. They do not have Chimay Blue). Book in advance. The place is always full. Very demanded."

  • "The mussels are amazing. I'm particularly fond of the Thai version but will happily eat my way through all of the varieties. I also really love the fried oyster appetizer. The restaurant a little loud but not too bad. Tables are close together so don't plan to say anything that can't be overheard. MUST book reservation a day or so in advance. During my second visit we ended up chatting up the diners on both sides of us, giving a communal feeling which was really fun. The couple that had been there numerous times advised us of the AMAZING freshly made donuts with your choice of filling - DO NOT SKIP THE SALTED CARAMEL!! Also, ask for the drunken donut special. however, service is BLAH to poor. no drink refills, no checking on you, etc"

  • "Our threesome got to the restaurant early and the bar area was packed, so we needed to go to a bar around the corner for cocktails. That was fine, since they had happy hour prices! We were seated immediately upon our return and the service was exceptional! We started with the crab cakes, which were delicious and full of meat. We ordered two types of mussels -- one with a Mexican flair and the parma. Both were delicious -- and the bread to soak up the juices was perfectly crusty and dense! The ice cold sauvignon blanc made this a perfect meal!"

  • "Went for early dinner after metropolitan on sun. At 5:30 pretty empty but totally filled up by 7. Wonderful selection of raw oysters. Our server was engaging, friendly & helpful in navigating the menu w/suggestions. & the mussels were prepared in ways we never had before & excellent. Try the Parma & add mushrooms. Can't miss accompanied w/truffle fries. Good wine selection & that donut dessert! Definetely a keeper."

They prepare mussels a dozen different ways, each more delicious than the next. For dessert, their fresh donuts are not to be missed. Choose your fillings and enjoy!"

  • "I really enjoyed the service and food in this one of a kind restaurant. It opens at 5pm for dinner. We spent all day at the MET and got to the restaurant 30 minutes before our 5pm reservation and they let us sit at the bar with a glass of ice water while they finished prepping. That was a really nice gesture. We had the oysters to start. They were really fresh and tasty. I had the mussel special dish with lobster bisque, scallops, shrimp, and macaroni. Mussels were cooked just right and were tender. The cocktail list is refreshing too. The service was very attentive and we were not rushed at all. Well done! I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "I made a reservation the night before and was seated at a table in front of the kitchen. I saw a party of 3 - same as my request - seated in a much better spot right after me. I asked the manager if we could move to a quieter location. He said not - fortunately the hostess had better customer service skills and seated us in a quieter location after aobut a 5 minute wait. Other wait staff were lovely - the manager had horrible customer service skills. "
