Diner Reviews
  • "This is one of my neighborhood favorites. There is a small but good selection of East and West Coast oysters, and the PEI mussels bask in a variety of complex broths. Even the bread delights, and it's perfect for dipping into the mussels broth! The salted caramel and lemon-filled doughnuts are a delicious way to end the meal. The cheerful art makes any seat cozy, but to enjoy an open view, ask for a table under the skylight. Limited street dining is available as well, and the bar area, though cramped, is bright and lively."

  • "Excellent restaurant. Best moules frites I have ever tasted. I recommend to start with a crab cake. Then order the mussels, provencale preparation. Is delicious. The only critic is the restricted list of Belgian beers. They should have the four classic trappists, all varietes (ie. They do not have Chimay Blue). Book in advance. The place is always full. Very demanded."

  • "Went to flex mussels with my family and we thoroughly enjoyed the fabulous food. Service was slow to get us our entrees,we each had a different mussell dish, but it was worth the wait and we enjoyed the festive, busy atmosphere. Great night out"

  • "Went for early dinner after metropolitan on sun. At 5:30 pretty empty but totally filled up by 7. Wonderful selection of raw oysters. Our server was engaging, friendly & helpful in navigating the menu w/suggestions. & the mussels were prepared in ways we never had before & excellent. Try the Parma & add mushrooms. Can't miss accompanied w/truffle fries. Good wine selection & that donut dessert! Definetely a keeper."

  • "Then do not miss this restaurant. My wife said they were the best mussels that she ever had, even better than Peter's Calm Bar on Long Island, where she grew up eating mussels. They prepare mussels a dozen different ways, each more delicious than the next. For dessert, their fresh donuts are not to be missed. Choose your fillings and enjoy!"

  • "We had a wonderful meal.....mussels were outstanding an the fried calamari, oyster and shrimp appetizer was a great pick too...can't say enough about the truffle fries...yum"

  • "Flex Mussels was a wonderful dining experience. The only problem is that the mussels are so good (especially the mussels parma) they preclude us from experiencing other restaurants in the city. Open one on Long Island."

  • "The mussels were wonderful and I love the large selection of broth. The kale salad was disappointing, but I really don't go to this restaurant for the kale salad."

  • "I really enjoyed the service and food in this one of a kind restaurant. It opens at 5pm for dinner. We spent all day at the MET and got to the restaurant 30 minutes before our 5pm reservation and they let us sit at the bar with a glass of ice water while they finished prepping. That was a really nice gesture. We had the oysters to start. They were really fresh and tasty. I had the mussel special dish with lobster bisque, scallops, shrimp, and macaroni. Mussels were cooked just right and were tender. The cocktail list is refreshing too. The service was very attentive and we were not rushed at all. Well done! I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Went with Mussel lovers although I myself don't eat them. Wish a little more selection for non-mussel eaters. Other than that, all was good."

  • "I made a reservation the night before and was seated at a table in front of the kitchen. I saw a party of 3 - same as my request - seated in a much better spot right after me. I asked the manager if we could move to a quieter location. He said not - fortunately the hostess had better customer service skills and seated us in a quieter location after aobut a 5 minute wait. Other wait staff were lovely - the manager had horrible customer service skills. "

  • "Having walked by the restaurant many times, we finally had dinner here. Much to our surprise, the ambiance is great, the good is beyond our expectations and the service was excellent. The selection of mussel preparations is vast. Each one that we ordered was extremely tasty and slightly different from each other. Vegetables were well prepared and equally tasty and fresh. Great choice."

  • "Happy Hour is an amazing value at this small, modern, call it boutique restaurant. I wouldn't do a romantic evening at Flex Mussels, but it's a trendy, hip place to go... and especially if you want a great oyster deal (12 for $18 during happy hour). We first did the drinks and oysters at the bar, then we moved to an outside table for two and enjoyed apps and mussell dinner. We had a southern and a maine mussell dish. The southern was perfect for me and my wife loved the Maine. They are very generous portions of mussells and we didn't leave hungry. I would come here again... but only if you want to partake in the limited fare offered on the menu. You best be a mussell lover!"

  • "First off I came to Flex for two things. One - they had a sparkling rose-it's off the menu, but still online. When I asked for cava the waiter tried to push prosecco on me.I don't like prosecco and I know the difference between the two.Second-the other reason I went to this restaurant was for their wedge salad-also gone, but also still on the online menu.I ordered the octopus instead, the bacon was underdone, rubbery; also incredibly over salted. The actual mussels I ordered were still good, but the sauce was greasy. The salted caramel doughnuts were skimpy on the filling. Overall I just feel like the food has really gone downhill. Maybe I came on an off night, but with so many great choices in the city - I will probably not return. "

  • "If you love mussels you will love flex mussels. Tucked away on the upper east side you will feel like you've stepped into true NY. Every dish on the menu is exceptional and tasty. Great salads. Fresh oyster options too. Don't leave without dessert! "

  • "Excellent mussels with expansive variety of stews to accompany them. Lovely and tolerably quiet given the popularity of the restaurant. Looking forward to returning."

  • "Loved this UES staple. Definitely will return, and the truffle fries are incredible. Had the basil/pesto mussel dish as well as the fungi. Both were insane, and want to go back to try something different! "

  • "We had an outstanding dinner! It was our first visit but we will be back. The chowder and mussels were awesome!"

  • "The food was amazing! For mussels to fill me up in a me was remarkable. Although the food arrived late, which was completely understable on a busy night, it was worth the wait. The server should have been updating us or filling our bread basket while waiting. I found the general manager a little rude that night (perhaps he was too toxic to care!). But overall, it was a great dining experience."

  • "I have been to this location twice. The second time around was terrible. We ordered appetizers which they forgot to bring to us. When we got our dinner, one section of the crab tasted like detergent, we sent it back and our waiter later on came back and apologized because she tasted it and noticed the same.10 minutes later, my friend got another cleopatra and that one was ok. At the end of the night when we got out bill the manager came by to tell us the truffle fries we ordered was on them for our troubles.I would've thought at least my friends cleopatra should've been compt since there was detergent in her food. I've been to 13th at numerous times without and issue. I will NEVER go here again. Was so upset I didn't even get the donuts!!!!"

  • "The variety of mussels is pretty impressive. And even if you're not a big fan of the donut, you HAVE to try the donut dessert. Although this time around, the donuts were not as fresh. But that was probably a rarity, I've been many times and this was the first time it happened."

  • "I had been to Flex mussels on 13th st previously. This was my first time at the 82nd st restaurant. I found the staff to be nicer and more helpful, and the food to be slightly better. I had a very good experience overall and would definitely recommend this place!"

  • "This is a restaurant that deserves its star rating. Small (ish) and busy, a reservation is a must, and it must be confirmed too afterwards. The wait staff was very attentive without being intrusive. The bowls for discarded mussel shells were picked up regularly from out table. The options for muscles is vast, but I personally would suggest simply as their muscles and oysters are so good and fresh. A thumbs up, although I did find the price for fresh oysers on the half shell a bit on the expensive side. Otherwise, great!"

  • "Had to wait for our table for close to 15 minutes after having a reservation, no apologies from the hostess. She did say when I got there right before my resevation, "we'll let you know when there's a table available" What? I have a resevation. After seeing people being sat, party after party, they eventually got to us, still no explanation or apology. They sat us in between the kitchen door and party of 16, which were extremely loud. The noise was evident, everybody could hear them. It was just two of us and we could not hear each other. Not good."

  • "The mussels were really great, and the selection of different preparations was really impressive. The fried oyster appetizers and french fries were OK but nothing great. But if you like mussels, this is the place to go. The quantity was abundant and the sauces were terrific."
