  • "Flea Street Cafe is named after its address, Alameda de las Pulgas or "Avenue of the Fleas"! Just part of the playfulness of its founder and renowned chef, Ms. Jesse Cool. As usual, ingredients are locally sourced as much as possible, most organic, and socially conscious-raised meat. The combinations are unusual, but some of the regular offerings (like the bread, the salads, the cocktails) are deserved old favorites. Our choices were all delicious, which is our normal experience here. It is not inexpensive despite the name—it is at the top end of Peninsula restaurants, just a notch below the top San Francisco establishments."

  • "Strangely I was told I didn't have a reservation when I arrived even though I had an email from Open Table and a Flea Street staffer had called me the day before to confirm. They worked quickly to resolve it but it was still an interesting start to the evening. The lavender and lemon cocktails were sooooo good, as was the gnocchi. The bread & biscuits deserve an honorable mention, too. It was a belated birthday dinner out for me and once they discovered that they brought out a candle and two truffles, yum!"

  • "Only getting better, Flea Street creates delicious farm to table fare that everyone loves. Point Reyes Oysters on the hall shell, puréed mushroom soup with hint of cream, winter vegetable plate even a meat lover would eat, gnocchi soft with chunks of fresh ricotta, fish perfectly prepared, house made sorbets. Nice mix of cocktails (lavender lemon drop wonderful). Only wish is she would expand her wine list. Only California wines misses the boat on some superlative choices to pair with the food. Only misstep was the service does not quite keep pace with the polish of the food. All in all, everyone love this place."

  • "Haven't been to Flea Street for a while. I must say everything is just as great as I remember. Never gets the hype as Manresa (too much pomp and very slow service) or Chez Panisse (great food but a long drive for pensinsula diners) but is a MUCH better experience than either. Love the neighborhood feel and the attentive service. Food is fabulous -- sorry -- REALLY fabulous. If you've never been there, give yourself a treat."

  • "This restaurant disappointed. A nicely tender black cod sat on a slightly congealed mass of Israeli couscous, flanked by mysterious root vegetables. Gnocchi perfectly serviceable. Front of house uneven: on the one hand, wait staff friendly and attentive. On the other hand, we arrived 15 minutes late, and hostess informed us that we would need to vacate our table by 8:45. There are more tactful ways to handle such things. Chowhound, you let me down!"

  • "This is probably my current favorite spot in the bay area. Three words: organic buttermilk biscuits. These absolutely divine morsels of buttery fluff are served warm from the oven. Definitely ask for seconds, but be warned that you might not have room for dessert. You can order some to bake at home ($15 a dozen). If you're in the mood for a drink, I highly suggest the lavender lemon drop cocktail Anyways, Flea Street Cafe is perfect for a special occasion or just a nice dinner. My favorite main course is the "which came first" pasture raised chicken. It's hard for many places to cook chicken perfectly. Service is great here, even when they are busy. The waiters were thoughtful and split our food into 2 plates since we were sharing."

  • "The menu, quality of the food, preparation, and presentation are all outstanding. But I felt that I spent too much for the evening-- over $150 for 2 people without wine. Three problems make me hesitant to return: 1) It became far too noisy to speak around 8 PM (despite being in a corner). 2) There's obvious pride in service, but I received the wrong second course and was repeatedly bumped by the servers walking by. 3) $8 per bottle of seltzer water made me feel cheated overall. These bottles are refilled for maybe 50 cents. It's one thing to pay for something extraordinary, but this made me feel that all the prices are inflated to make things seem precious."

  • "I'd heard of Flea Street for a number of years but never made it by. It was wonderful. From a great mojito at the bar to excellent food and service, the Alaskan cod was sublime and my wife's vegetarian Winter Vegetable selection was amazing. She even like the brussel sprouts (no small feat!) Overall, it was fantastic. The entrees range from $25-38, so expect to pay a bit more but we found it to be worth the price! Definitely will visit again."

My daughter heard the owners speak at the 2014 Eco Farm conference in Monterey and insisted we go there. We invited a few others to join in. It was a wonderful evening. The restaurant is simply decorated but the colors are warm and inviting. The tables are spaced well; I love to be in a restaurant where I can hear conversation in the background, so I know everyone is having fun, but I can still hear my own table's conversation perfectly. The menu was interesting, and the waiter was very informative about ingredients and portion sizes. Short ribs, the steak special, and the vegetarian plate got rave reviews."

  • "I have visited The Flea Street Cafe once before and it seemed more appropriate for a romantic dinner than a work dinner, and I was right! Our waiter was terrific (personable , knowledgeable, helpful). The food was perfectly prepared, and the proportions were such that we felt quite satisfied but not uncomfortable . They had our table ready as soon as we arrived. The only small item they missed is that I had mentioned that it was our anniversary when I used the Open Table site but the waiter was not aware until we were finishing our desert and my wife mentioned it…they obviously did not read the reservation."

  • "Three of us went to dinner on a Sunday night. Everything went well until the two orders for short ribs came. Both my friends looked at each other at the same time after taking their first bite and stated that the food was barely warm. We told the waiter and he did reheat one dish and she then enjoyed her food. My other friend is uncomfortable having her plate return to the kitchen and come back to her on a complaint and ate it as it was. They brought her a side dish of the potatoes and those were barely warm again. Not sure what the story was."

I have definitely had better meals that have been a lot more memorable for less money.
