Diner Reviews
  • "There were 6 of us celebrating a family birthday. It was a magical evening with unbelievable food and ambience. It even snowed a little for us, so our view was a winter land. Just incredible all around!"

  • "I love this place for the unique setting, the atmosphere and the view... and so will anyone you invite to join you there. The menu provided a variety of selections for the discriminating palate, but we stuck with the basics. We had steak and lobster, which were both excellent. Service was well-timed and friendly and with an extra touch that makes the evening a little more special. All in all we had a very pleasant and affordable evening there."

  • "Beautiful spot but a little tired. Service lacked finesse. Food was good, but not stellar . Would not return."

  • "I have dined at the top steak houses and some awesome restaurants in CA and this was by far my favorite restaurant I have ever dined at. It was the entire experience from the minute we were seated to the awesome views to the excellent food and service. We had a wine recommendation based on my favorite wine they didn't have that tasted just as good, the food was cooked and tasted perfect and the service was excellent. I liked that you get the sides with the meal vs. other high end restaurants where everything is A la carte and there was even constant little goodies being brought throughout the night. This is one of those places you get what you pay for and it is worth every penny. Thank you for making our evening one to remember."

  • "I'm a 3rd Timer. Maybe a last Timer. One dish pleases my longing for my favorite dining spot in Boulder. The pan seared, duck confit & duck tenderloin pithivier - this dish was truly created for me. What happened? Totally different. The taste, the appearance, the portion...I was extremely disappointed."

  • "First time in Boulder, picked this place based on the reviews and we were not disappointed. Really good food - and the kept bring out different small courses (complimentary) that were really good. The view from on top Flatiron is of course, the best in Boulder."

  • "This is expensive, but worth the money. The staff are attentive and unobtrusive, and there are many to make sure everything you want is perfect. The food was fantastic and the main meals were of generous proportions. The view and ambiance is amazing and the noise level is nice and quiet so you can easily hold a conversation. This really is a special occasion location, but definitely worth it! All the little "extras" as well that they provide between courses are amazing!"

  • "You could have a great meal for a couple for about $100, but that would be missing out on so much of what makes Flagstaff House restaurant a memorable and worthy experience. Come prepared to not be concerned about money, and you'll find there are few restaurant experiences like it. Perfect for special occasions, groups, a romantic night out. We recently celebrated our anniversary there, and it made the event a wonderfully memorable one. Highest recommendation to all the serving staff, chefs and kitchen staff, parking attendants! Thank you!"

  • "For a couple of years I wanted to visit this place, but never had a will to do the long drive from Denver. Finally got there. Heavily overrated and definitely overpriced place. View is awesome. Duck and fuagra appetizers were great, this is where everything "great" about this place ends. Filet mignon is marginal, halibut is blend, rabbit was OK. For the price I'd expect a lot better food. Service is mixed too - Flagstaff is positioning itself as an upscale restaurant which shows, but good luck waiting for the waiter to ask if you need another drink, or to come up and ask if you need anything at all. Waiters showing attitude when client is not happy should also never happen in the place like this."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a delicious dinner while overlooking Boulder. The service was great, and the atmosphere was perfect."

  • "We had the `Europe inspired chef's menu' which was terrific and had (optional) impressive wine pairings --- interesting French wines that complement each dish. We especially enjoyed the pork, venison, and dessert courses and their pairings. The service is the best and the view over the city lights of Boulder is stunning. It's hard to think of a better dining experience to celebrate a wedding anniversary (as we were)."

  • "I recently ate for the first time at the Flagstaff house - it was a beautiful experience. First of all, we timed our dinner well with the sunset over the front range, and we had a beautiful view. The food was so excellent that both my mom and I gleefully overate until we were close to bursting. The lobster soup was especially delicious. I'm not really used to sorbet palette cleansers, which was a nice treat. Our waiter was very knowledgable about the wine list, and was able to recommend an excellent pairing for my main course. All in all, it was an excellent dining experience!"

  • "The ambience and wait staff are amazing! This is definitely a special occasion experience as the price is steep. However, the view is wonderful with a great view for every seat. The food is delicious with an amuse bousche between each course. They provide nice details with a gift of their delicious bread to take home. Yumm!"

  • "The food was good. The presentation of the food was excellent. The view is spectacular. The server's response to everything was "lovely" and the girl who cleared the table was always hovering. The rolls were mediocre at best. I said that I would recommend it to a friend only for the view. We live in the NY area and at the price of this restaurant there are many that far surpass the quality."

  • "We had the venison and rabbit meals (can't recall exact names) as well as their Calamari and Ray fish appetizer. Throughout the entire dinner the waiter was always bringing small samplings of various things and I can definitely say I'm not sure there is anything on the menu that I wouldn't love. They also make excellent cocktails, and would very much recommend the "Blood and Sand" or an Old Fashioned with any of their excellent bourbons."

  • "You can always count on the Flagstaff House to deliver an extra-special experience. This time, I noted in my OpenTable reservation that we were secretly celebrating my sister's wedding anniversary. So, in true form, they printed up a special version of the menu for our table that said "Happy 18th Anniversary" at the top! At the dessert course, they presented the couple with a stunning sculpture of a 12" tall heart made of caramelized sugar with the inscription "Happy Anniversary" replete with cookies and treats. The dinner was executed beautifully as usual -- filet mignon, King Salmon, lobster bisque, Coq au Vin, and Colorado Trout. It's nice to be able to count on an exemplary meal whenever you go to the Flagstaff House."

  • "As long as you know what you're getting into price-wise, this place is topnotch. From start to finish you feel like royalty, like they want you to have the best. Although, if you're vegetarian or vegan, you might be disappointed in what they have to offer. I say "might " because I haven't tried any of their vegetarian dishes; I simply noticed there weren't many exciting options."

  • "The views were magnificent and the restaurant was beautiful. We did not experience a welcoming atmosphere when entering in spite of the beauty. Service was good but extremely stoic and that partnered with what we all felt was average tastes in each of our dinners made the evening less than the festive yummy event we had hoped. We found it mediocre - certainly not bad but not good enough to return. We apologize for writing a negative review but it the feeling that we had when we left the restaurant."

  • "I've been dining at the Flagstaff House for at least 30 years, and even had my wedding there 7 years ago. It is truly the finest in food and service, with a mind-boggling wine list."

  • "The view and the steaks are the two main reasons to go to this restaurant. A couple of my guests tried the Denver Wagyu steaks and loved them. The server tried to convince us to get the Japanese Wagyu which was much more expensive - but my guests enjoyed the Denver version anyway. Definitely order the chocolate lava cake when you put in your dinner order!"

  • "We had a disappointing dinner experience for our Valentine's night out. We were seated at a fairly large table that had been placed in the middle of the seating area. We could either shout our conversation ( very romantic!) or slide around the side of this and sit with the mental legs of this temporary table pressing against your legs. There also was a cold air breeze passing through the floor area which required my wife to place her coat on her legs.. The service was fine but because of the placement of our table, we had a constant movement of staff serving the other tables in the area because we were placed in between them. The food was very good as usual. In all years we have dined at Flagstaff, this was the least satisfactory experience."

  • "I have had the good fortune of dining at some of the renown restaurants in the world and I am happy to say that we have one in our area. It is a special place for special occasions. And sometimes - just as a treat! The food has a continental flare and the breads and pastries are wonderful. Most delightful were the unexpected little food touches before, during and after the meal. The presentation and service was terrific. On a personal note - this restaurant always reminds me of my Aunt (Kyoko Kita) who helped Colorado entertain the Crown Prince and Princess during their visit to Colorado. She and her Sogetsu group did many flower arrangements during the royal visit and it was a special time for my family."

  • "The view of Boulder is breathtaking day and night. Excellent cuisine, varied and imaginative without being over the top. Service is friendly and impeccable."

  • "This is definitely a place for special occasions, which we have done several times. After a few years of eating in downtown, we went back again and were disappointed. The view is still the best in Boulder, of course. But the food was uneven--great appetizer (tuna tartar) and salad, the entrees were just so-so (duck--should be rarer and chicken--very salty sauce), and excellent dessert (creme brûlée). The same went for drinks--amazing cocktail (side car) and bourbon on the rocks, but the wine was a bit of a problem. Two people ordered red wine by the glass, and, after searching for a while, they said they were out. How could they not know, since the wine list is on an iPad, which meant they could update once a particular bottle was out."

  • "Food was good. The service was good, although they rushed at times to pick up your plates before you were done. Disappointed in where we were seated. When I called and requested a window seat, they said it was first come first serve. Understandable since this is a place know for its view. When we got there the place was almost empty. They seated us in the very back corner near the door. There were several seats against the window. When I asked if we could get a window seat, she said they were reserved. Made no sense. Was really disappointed. The draft by the door was so cold they had to put a space heater on. The experience was ok, but I wouldn't rush back."

  • "The food was great and so were all of the staff except our waiter. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt - we all have bad days, but he seemed exasperated and impatient from the time we were seated. The duck and the trout were both delicious and perfectly cooked. The view of the valley at sunset was beautiful."

  • "My wife and I have been here many times. We have brought the kids here on Mother's Day (admittedly a few years ago!) and every dinner has been wonderful and memorable. We have noticed that they are able to accommodate families and couples so everyone has an enjoyable time. The food and the staff are exquisite. The personal touches they provide always make this the place we go for a special occasion, or if we need a special occasion they make it one."

  • "We had a nice evening here, but for $100 / plate, I would've expected a better experience. It was around 15 minutes before our waiter even arrived to ask us for drinks after we got in, and this sort of service continued throughout the evening. Our food was OK -- both entrees were luke warm and dry, which was disappointing."

  • "By boyfriend and I went to Flagstaff House for Valentine's Day and we had a great experience. It is pretty pricey, making it a good fit for those special occasions that come up a couple times a year. The staff is friendly and helpful and all tables offer an exceptional view of Boulder. Being a college student, I am not use such fine dining so I was amazed at the fact that the valet parking was complementary haha. I ordered the filet mignon (rare). It was cooked to perfection and plating was very impressive. Overall, the food and service were exceptional. I look forward to dining there again and I highly recommend Flagstaff House to anyone looking for a phenomenal dining experience."

  • "This was our second visit to the Flagstaff House, and it was just as wonderful as the first. The food is incredible and the service is friendly and top-notch. The only negative, and it wasn't a big deal, was that there were so many tables in the dining room that my husband compared it to "Maggianos" (he kept getting people bumping into his chair). But that could have been because they had a lot of tables booked for Valentine's weekend. In any case, we can't wait to go back for our next special occasion."

  • "Flagstaff house used to be iconic dining in the Boulder area and was my favorite restaurant. Have been there many, many times. However, food this last Valentines day was not just average but really terrible across everything that we ordered. Considering the cost ($475 for 2 people without desert) really hard to forgive the serious problems with the food. Can't see going back anytime soon."
