Five is a nice restaurant in the Shattuck Hotel in downtown Berkeley. Solid food, service and very nice ambiance. We were a group of 5 and each enjoyed his/her meal. And the bonus! : conveniently located across the street from the BART station entrance!

Service and ambiance were both wonderful but menu are a bit "outdated". Would definitely return with a revamped menu. Great place to hang out with friends as tables are very spaced out (rare in Berkeley) and the bar area is quiet (which is a plus if you want to carry a conversation)

We have been so happy with the food each time we have eaten here. Delicious vegetable rolls as an entree, great warm chive biscuits as an appetizer and their signature butterscotch pudding for dessert. However, the service, until we complained, was very slow -- and this was before they got busy.

On this visit to Five (we've been several times) the food was just excellent. The smoked duck salad was wonderful with great flavors and textures. It could have been a meal in itself. The service was very good and our server was expertly familiar with the wine list. The ambiance at Five is so nice. It's rare to find a restaurant these days where four people can sit and talk quietly over dinner, and actually hear each other!

A Viognier wine sample tasted like it had been open to long. The Mac and Cheese which lists seafood as ingredients was too fishy and tasted like a leftover. The salad was impractical, hunks of beet and peach and big pieces of bitter red lettuce on a flat plate, though the watermelon chip was tasty and interesting. The pork cheeks were not tender, maybe prepared on a previous night, the meat was dark like beef. Scallops were excellent, calamari ring garnish was tough and vegetables also were not tender. Bread pudding tasted refrigerated, barely warm, even on the second attempt. We won't go again for food, but maybe for music and a drink. Attentive but slow pace of service, maybe due to the kitchen. Overall disappointment.

We had an excellent dinner with family....our waiter William provided exemplary service, as well as suggestions regarding the menu. We sampled five appetizers and four entrees- every one was superb! Favorites were the duck dishes, the biscuits, and the mushroom specialities. We will definitely return, and the price fixed menu is also a great option.

FIVE has a nice spot in Berkeley with a great menu and decent staff. However, the dishes on the menu that I was so excited about were actually not exciting at all. The beef tartar was small and lacked flavor. The little dribbles of sauce and garnish weren't enough to spice it up. It sort of tasted like a raw hamburger to me. The orrachetti mac and cheese was very liquidy - expected a more creamy/cheesy sauce. It also tasted pretty fishy. The mushroom ravioli dish tasted okay, but lacked excitement and the kale made it pretty bitter. The scallops and calamari was decent - both cooked well, but the strange green sauce was unappealing to look at and didn't have the flavor I was expecting. Probably won't go back...

Five has a nice menu although somewhat limited. WE did enjoy the food and the wine. Although this restaurant is in an older historic building, it has recently been renovated and it has its' own special charm. It almost seems as if 2 different designers were at odds with each other when they planned the layout and they had to compromise with the results. The dining area is open off of the lobby blocked off by the huge bar. Some of the decor looks vintage and some of the glass chandeliers looks overdone like they came from an 80's disco.. It might be nice if the staff wasn't in such a hurry to start re-setting for breakfast at 9pm..

We purchased an online coupon for a meal for 4, so I was a little skeptical. Walking in, you are in the lobby of a small older but nicely updated sort of art deco hotel. The restaurant is off to the right behind a huge bar which is designed to look even larger, as if it is mirrored. Very cool effect. We had just the right amount of attentive service, the drinks were spot on, and the food was imaginative, presented well, and tasty. A good experience and the coupon made it even better!

What a wonderful experience, I had the wild boar gnocchi which was to die for, crisp pea pods and hazelnuts added texture and the bolognese like sauce with the gnocchi was wonderful, I was conducting an orchestra with every bite. My girl friend had the California duck, she loved it. We had a nice bottle of Pino Noir with the meal then went to see Dave Matthews at the Greek theater, I would go back just to dine at Five

We had a little difficulty finding the hostess stand, but that was due to the happy hour crowd in the bar area. Once we found our way we were greeted warmly and taken to a cozy little spot away from the bar. The place is a bit noisy, but spaced well. The server was slow to the table, but once she did she was very attentive, gave great menu advice and was on top of everything. She honored a special request, came back numerous times for our special needs and even handled a disgruntled table astutely as 3 young boys came running through the restaurant to their table. The food was tasty and well presented. The tartar was unique yet familiar; pappardelle outstanding, the duck was tasty but a little fatty(which is not in their control)

Our service was spotty, and slow. Don't think it was the fault of the waiter. The food was, well, trying really hard, but just not there yet. A party of six, we were there for almost 3 hours, way too long, and things were forgotten and not done well. I think it will improve, the management was attentive to our needs, just not much to do for it. The GM was on his second day. It will probably improve over time.

Our party of four had an early Sunday dinner (5:30), so we had the staff's full attention and had a quiet room. The decor is striking, with black and white print wallpaper, a huge chandelier, and matching wall fixtures of white/clear glass with red glass accents. All of us ordered the fixed price menu at $36 for a Kir Royale, appetizer, main, and dessert - a great value and really tasty. We started with the tomato carpaccio and smoked duck breast salad, followed by sockeye salmon and a lamb pappardelle - all were excellent. For dessert the creme brûlée was good, but the real winner was the apricot clafoutis. We'll be back!

We were greeted by the sweet host who remembered to say Happy B'day to my honey, and it just got better. While checking out our options we quickly realized that the less expensive fixed price menu offered amazing food at a great price. I had the mushroom ravioli and heirloom tomato salad and he went with the lamb shank pappardelle. Both excellent! There was also a refreshing kir royale, a lovely little gruyere cheese puff surprise, and don't get me started on the chic chip bread pudding. Our server was patient and attentive without fawning. I adore this restaurant.
