As you enter the lobby of the Shattuck Hotel the time changes to mid century elegant. Walk up the marble steps into the bar and reception area of FIVE. We ordered their inventive drinks, starters and entrees...all wonderful. My wife and I were talking about this restaurant on the next day. They are located near the BART station and the Berkeley Rep...very convenient for us for an evening in Berkeley. We will return!

We didn't count on great food, it just happened. We ate here because we were staying at the hotel and there was a chance of rain; we didn't want to go out. Surprise, the food was excellent! The gnocchi and venison ragu was terrific, with the texture and taste of the gnocchi a perfect match to the venison. A smallish wine list with good pricing and eclectic, interesting wines and multiple price points. Oh, and the service and ambiance compliment the meal in every way. There is also an excellent bar, so make a dinner reservation and arrive early.

The four of us (all seniors) came for first time to FIVE. We wanted a good meal for a get-together. Five has fine food, a nice quiet atmosphere. We each ordered the crabe melt sandwich, a salmon entree, gnocee, and duck confit, and shared our food. Five was only 40% full, prices much less than Chez Paneese Cafe, but food is good, not not as good as Chez Paneese. Overall, we enjoyed our relaxing lunch. Service was good also. A nice place to have lunch.

We enjoyed a lovely dinner at Five again, though the noise level makes it a strain to have a comfortable conversation. The live music was delightful on Thursday evening. Good food and friendly service, though we were ignored at first when we arrived by a pretty distracted seeming hostess.

I'm going to try to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that everyone was new there from the hostess to the wait staff AND that they were understaffed. As for the food, it was decent but not outstanding. Best part was butterscotch pudding for dessert.

Besides being located in a beautifully renovated historical building, the restaurant FIVE is a stand out in the Berkeley foodie scene. The décor is beautiful with a black/white theme set off by red Murano glass chandeliers and red glass bread plates. The menu is superbly curated with just the right amount of appetizers, mains, and comforting sides to suit all tastes. A group of four were celebrating and from the friendly welcome by the hostess to the wonderful service by our waiter Justin Thyme (yes, his real name given to him by his chef mother), our evening repast was extraordinary. The standouts for us in appetizers were the chilled poached prawns with mango apple salsa on a green papaya salad, then Dungeness and rock crab salad with avocado and citrus foam, the persimmon salad with roasted golden beets, and the read win poached pear and smoked duck breast salad. (Prices per appetizer $12-13). For mains, the scallops with puttanesca relish and the duck breast with dried cheery and raisin gastrique were excellent. One person enjoyed the angus New York steak and said it was one of the best steaks he’d ever eaten. (Mains$28-$30) We ordered sugar snap peas in garlic for the table ($5) and had two exquisite desserts: a chocolate bread pudding and a lava cake both served with gelato. FIVE boasts a beautiful bar and specialty cocktails reasonably priced. Although on our visit we used a Travelzoo special, this is a restaurant where all of us agreed paying full price is worth the experience. High Five!

Chef Stephane Tonnelier is exceptional. The food was presented beautifully. My favorite appetizer was the crab mixed salad, it was so good. I had the pan seared halibut, which was savory and full of flavor. My husband had the duck with risotto and served with a mixture of fresh vegetables and warmed pear, all very fresh and cooked perfectly. Service was excellent. The dining room was elegant and grand. We highly recommend Five and will return again soon.

This restaurant took over the dining room of the Shattuck Hotel. It is a beautiful room and is well-designed. Even though the place was full with lively conversations, the room was well insulated and you could converse with your table without shouting. The food was spectacular. There were four of us and we all got different appetizers and main courses. Everything was perfect. The food is imaginatively prepared and presented. They also have some vintage cocktails which are interesting to try. Only disappointment was the watery espresso at the end - may I'll skip coffee next time. But the rest of the food was outstanding. It was truly a special evening, even though a regular day!

This is our second time here. We love the ambiance and the food and service are excellent. My only complaint is that I think the food must be very rich, because I end up stuffed. I had the halibut soup (which wasn't supposed to be a cream soup, but was very filling) and the crab salad appetizer and three of us shared a molten lava cake - I ended up almost unpleasantly full and that's not a lot of food. The dessert list is fantastic. My daughter had the scallop entree and my friend had the halibut - both were excellent.

We had read nice reviews about Five so thought we would give it a try last night. The food was very good. We enjoyed the pork chops and scallops and the lobster mac and cheese was awesome. But unfortunately the service was disastrous! Took 15 minutes to get a cocktail!! Then after our dinner was served it took 20 minutes to get our glass of wine we had ordered so it came when we were finished with our meals. The restaurant was maybe 50% full so the slow service was very disappointing. For the lack of service I would not recommend the restaurant or ever go back.

Beautiful spot in what looks like a well renovated "classic" hotel. Unfortunately the food was hit or miss (mostly miss). We started with the smoked duck salad (very tasty but messily presented), and the "lobster" mac and cheese which was stunningly bland and had overcooked pasta. Our entrees were the NY steak (which was overcooked and had to be sent back, and the parppardelle with lamb. The dish had good flavor, but the lamb was quite gamey and the pasta was dense. They were also short staffed so service wasn't the greatest. I can't really recommend this place.

On this visit to Five (we've been several times) the food was just excellent. The smoked duck salad was wonderful with great flavors and textures. It could have been a meal in itself. A Viognier wine sample tasted like it had been open to long. The Mac and Cheese which lists seafood as ingredients was too fishy and tasted like a leftover. The salad was impractical, hunks of beet and peach and big pieces of bitter red lettuce on a flat plate, though the watermelon chip was tasty and interesting. The pork cheeks were not tender, maybe prepared on a previous night, the meat was dark like beef. Scallops were excellent, calamari ring garnish was tough and vegetables also were not tender. Bread pudding tasted refrigerated, barely warm, even on the second attempt. We won't go again for food, but maybe for music and a drink. Attentive but slow pace of service, maybe due to the kitchen. Overall disappointment.
