Diner Reviews
  • "I recently ate at 555. The food was awesome and the service was good. I would recommend this restaurant to a friend."

  • "This was our second visit to Five Fifty-Five and we were very impressed again with both the food and service. The lobster mac and cheese is unbelievably good and well worth the price. The server was friendly and very attentive and the restaurant itself is beautifully decorated. The drink list is impressive, with several cocktail, beer, and wine choices. Five Fifty-Five is definitely one of the best restaurants in Portland and well worth the visit."

  • "Five Fifty-Five is one of the most under-rated restaurants. In a city with many great restaurants, it is near the top. It consistently puts out imaginative and skillfully executed dishes."

  • "My wife and I went there for our anniversary and we weren't disappointed. We both had the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairings and were overwhelmed with the flavorful creations presented us. Our waitress was not only very friendly and courteous but attentive without being overly so. She made excellent choices for the wine pairings that accentuated the chef's inspirations superbly. This was our first visit to five fifty five but we've already made plans to return. Highly recommend!"

  • "We went here for our anniversary. Making the reservation through OpenTable was easy and effortless. We ended up with an excellent table by a window. The whole dining experience beginning to end was fantastic. The five course dinner was perfect. Our waitress was attentive and so nice. I didn't even notice that we were there for 2.5 hours. Everything seemed to be timed perfectly."

  • "We have eaten at 555 many times over the years, but it had been awhile since we had had the opportunity. This past Saturday, we did have the chance, and we had an excellent meal and overall experience. Highly recommend!"

  • "Great return - a few off things (service) but a great experience."

  • "I celebrated my birthday there and loved every minute of it. The lobster Mac and cheese was amazing. My husband's steak was a bit undercooked but the waitress graciously had the chef rectify the situation,"

  • "The meal we had at Five Fifty-Five was very good albeit pricey . I would heartily recommend the grilled Caesar there which is a small bunch of romaine (I think) lettuce which has been placed on the grill than drizzled with a creamy Caesar dressing (yummy) and topped with garlicky croutons. I chose to have a couple of small plates rather than a large and that worked out perfectly. Portion sizes were fine and I left comfortably full. I had the Berry Foie Gras and the Bang Island Mussels. I can easily say those were the BEST mussels I have ever had.......large mussels in the most delicious spicy broth. Easily the best part of my meal. The service was attentive and courteous as well providing for a very enjoyable experience."

  • "I made my reservation for 2 through Open Table - really easy. They called to confirm on the day I had reserved. A little later that day we decided to add a third person to the reservation and they were very welcoming and accommodating even though they were busy. I have an allergy to garlic which provides a challenge for many chefs, but Five Fifty-Five met the challenge. We each had the "Chef's Tasting" and made sure to order something different for each course, so we go to try 15 different selections. The items which appeared to be straightforward were as expected and delicious. Those which appeared to be complicated, unique and interesting were all that. There was something for picky eaters and something for the adventurous."

  • "My husband and I dined at 555 while visiting Portland seven years ago and had a fantastic experience. Went back on Friday night and was disappointed. Maybe we ordered wrong, maybe it was an off night, but I'll never complain about the price of an entree if I'm wowwed, but I just wasn't. Next time we're in town we'll stop by for a drink but try dinner elsewhere, hopefully sooner than 2021."

  • "The chefs tasting menu is beyond amazing. Each course offers new flavors and textures that all compliment each other nicely. The thing that was the most amazing to me and said the most about the chefs skill was that I never had to use any salt or pepper, everything was seasoned to perfection."

  • "Truly enjoyed the experience. Thoughtful, vibrant, brilliantly executed. The 5 course tasting was fabulous."

  • "From the warm welcome through the 5 fantastic courses, the espresso finale and fond farewell, my husband and I enjoyed our dinner at Five Fifty-Five thoroughly. Every taste was a treat. We especially enjoyed the "foie" berry shortcake, a very successful combination of flavors and textures. We loved being able to choose the tasting menu courses from each category, mixing and matching things we knew we would not want to share with options to maximize our tasting opportunities. Superior, service enhanced the evening, although I can't say the same about the open kitchen. As much as we respect the chef and entire kitchen staff, we'd rather hear each other than orders being called and the sounds of the batterie de cuisine."

  • "My other half and I dined here for the very first time, and it certainly won't be the last. We both chose the chef's tasting menu and each course was absolutely delicious!! The only negative is that the servings were a little on the small side. I didn't think we were going to be getting full sized servings, but my fiance was still hungry and looking for snacks by the time we got home. That probably shouldn't happen after spending $200 on dinner for 2. That would be my only negative from our dining experience, but it tasted so good that I won't complain too much"

  • "We've enjoyed 555 on visits to Portland for more than a decade. Not only haven't they rested on their laurels, they've continued to innovate and excel. We had the tasting menu and enjoyed an extraordinary and beautifully designed white gazpacho, excellent foie gras, scallops et al. Our server provided insightful perspective on both the menu and the eclectic wine list. We also find 555 a very good price/value. As New Yorkers, I only wish we could have an overall dining experience like this at home!"

  • "Christian was a great waiter! Attentive, knowledgeable, personable and willing to ask chef if we could have tuna from the tasting menu..We gave the chef kudos for saying we could have tuna as app. It was wonderful. I would like to see more small plate choices. We thought the portion size was perfect as was the pace."

  • "We enjoyed the 7 course chef's menu and wine tasting. Eclectic, whimsical and tasty! Our server was knowledgeable and explained each dish and pairing. If the cost does not deter you, I encourage you to experience this choice. To us, it was worth every penny."

  • "As early diners we were shuttled off to the very top floor which was gloomy and poorly lit for a sunny sunday morning. Eggs ordered sunny-side-up were clearly undercooked and even the waitress agreed with us - she offered to send them back but it was so late into the meal when she checked that we didn't have the time to wait. The Strawberry and Rhubarb French Toast was clearly being kept warm for serving as it was soggy and only just warm on arrival and the 'rhubarb' was three tiny blobs of puree. I had to ask for more coffee from another passing waiter where he served me half a cup as his jug emptied and never returned. Very disappointing"

  • "We go to 555 frequently for special occasions. We've never had a bad meal and we find it to be the most reliable fine dining restaurant in town. Some of it's strongest areas are the great service of the wait and bus staff, the beer and wine menu, and the desserts. I do wish they introduced more new menu items and specials, although the regular options are always consistently good. The bar is great, too. We often come for just drinks and desserts."

  • "We had eaten at 555 a year ago and had an excellent experience. We returned, had an excellent meal, but our waiter was less than accommodating, and in general irritating. This is the first time in memory that I have left less than a 20% tip. I felt as if I was judged from the second that we walked through the door. We were not dressed up, we took a last minute trip. We had had a drink and appetizer prior, so the chef's tasting menu was not what we wanted period. Our waiter was visibly unhappy with us. When we opted not to have desert, we were asked if we were "sure about that". Long story short, we're two professionals who just wanted to escape for a night and a nice meal. Food was great waiter not great."

  • "We chose the 7 course chef's tasting menu with wine pairings and were very happy! The waitress was able to swap out one of the oaky chardonnay choices, which was very appreciated. The timing of the courses was great and we were more than satisfied by the end of the journey. We will definitely come back for another special occasion."

  • "555 was actually our 2nd choice for dinner in Portland and luckily for us our first choice was booked. We could not have asked for more. We opted for the 7 course chefs menu with the wine pairing, a challenge I must admit but well worth the effort! We asked for one change in the menu and that was the substitution of the truffled lobster mac and cheese for the red fish, we worked out the upgrade with no problem. Can't say much more to describe the experience than incredible. 555 is now on our top 10 list, which is composed of several restaurants in Paris, including Jules Verne and Louis 13th, it's that good. If you get to Portland, this is a must try. You won't be disappointed."

  • "My wife and now make Portland a destination (we live in Tarrytown, NY) when we travel up to northern Maine. It make the drive so much more relaxing. The city is fabulous and there are so many great restaurants. This time we stayed at the new Westin ( which was okay, not great) and ate at 555. Familiar concept here. Open kitchen, named after the street number. Beyond that, the food was incredible. We had the asparagus salad and the grilled Caesar salad. Both amazing. Filled with such flavors. Then we shared a lobster mac and cheese which was to die for. Needless to say we eat lots of lobster in Maine and usually avoid it in restaurants. Nicer to buy it off the boat and boil it fresh. But this was beyond sensational. We will be back for sure"

  • "The spring dinner menu was fantastic. The salad with fennel was great, but the risoto with fiddleheads and tomatoes with and a ramp pesto was unbelievably great! "

  • "For Portland, this restaurant was too pretentious. Waiters were too formal - not warm and inviting. Felt more like a upscale, stuffy, NY experience rather than a warm, Maine experience. The food was very good but only offered salmon dish for entree - another local fish would have been great. I've been here several times over the past 7 years and not sure I would return for a long time and if so, would try the bar for appetizers and wine. The wine list is superb."

  • "I chose Five Fifty Five based on the recommendation from TripAdvisor (now I know I can trust these recommendations). We made reservations for our anniversary dinner. Our appetizer was seared ??? Best ever. It actually did a great job of making us look forward to dinner. I had the pepper-crusted diver scallops with carrot vanilla emulsion and my hubby had the truffled lobster mac and cheese. First of all the presentation was very professional and the food tasted really great. Everything went well together, the carrots were the best tasting carrots I have ever had. Dessert was rhubarb souflee and house churned ice-cream, both to die for. I would definitely go back and recommend this restaurant to others."

  • "We enjoyed the 7 course tasting menu. Service was friendly and efficient. Out waiter explained everything and answered all our questions. This as our third time at 555. It is one of the best restaurants in Portland."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Five Fifty-Five. We each ordered the 5-course tasting menu. The food was excellent and locally-sourced, and the waiter was so considerate of the fact that I was newly pregnant (and still really nervous about that fact). He went back to check with the chef between each course to make sure every ingredient was safe, and he kept the ginger ale flowing. At the end of the meal, my dessert came out with "congratulations" written in chocolate on the plate. My husband raved about the wine pairings, which I would have loved to try."

  • "We had an outstanding meal at 555 by entrusting our fate to the chef. Although the 7-course tasting menu is described fully on a menu page, we were fortunate to enjoy several delicious surprise courses along the way too. Our service was attentive and friendly, even as the restaurant steadily filled throughout the evening. Definitely one of the best dining options in Portland!"

  • "We had a wonderful brunch for 4 adults; I enjoyed one of their specials and we split a cinna-bon. Not the best cinnamon bun I'd ever had but it was made up for by the food. Each plate was incredibly composed - like a fine-dining experience but perfectly sized portions and extremely delicious. They even sent out house-made coffee cake and lemon muffins to start the meal!"
