A word from Five Fifty-Five
Steve and Michelle Corry, the proprietors of Five Fifty-Five, arrived in Portland armed with a passionate vision and extensive experience in the restaurant industry. Steve began his culinary career as a brew master at several breweries in Northern California. In 1999, he attended the New England Culinary Institute in Burlington Vermont. After graduating in 2001, he returned to California to work at Domaine Chandon in Napa Valley. A graduate of Boston University with a Bachelor's Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration, Michelle Corry has worked at numerous prestigious establishments, including the French Laundry in Napa. Together, they have envisioned a dining experience that would combine a comfortable atmosphere, professional service, and fresh, simple, and delicious food sourced locally.   • "Overall, the dining experience was great. The food is amazing and our waitress was fun and engaging. Our only issue was with the wait time. We had a later reservation, at 9:30pm. We showed up earlier, at 8:45, with the intention of getting a drink at the bar first. The hostess told us we'd probably be seated around 9:15. At 9:40, I asked the hostess about our reservation, and she told us "oh, we've been looking for you." It would have been nice if they actually had been, as we'd been at the bar for almost an hour. As we were being seated, I counted 5 open tables at which we could have been seated in that time. We were the last party to leave the restaurant that night."

  • "My husband and son and I chose 555 to celebrate a very special occasion and we were not disappointed. The mussels were delicious - perhaps the best we've ever eaten. Our waiter was well informed about the menu and helpful in clarifying our choices. The service was efficient and unobtrusive and the overall pacing of our meal was just right - no easy feat since one of us ordered the 5 course tasting menu and the other two ordered starters and entrees. This was our second visit to 555 and because we don't each rich food that often we are not likely to return again soon but it will remain an obvious choice for special occasions."

We had the chef's choice including the wine pairings as well as the choice of 5 items, one from each category. It was a great way to taste a wide variety of preparations."

Service was deplorable for a restaurant to charge these kinds of prices for such a poor service experience. Not at all what one would expect when paying about $100 per person for a meal."

If you want a fine dining experience in Portland, Fore Street Restaurant is a far better choice."

  • "My friend and I came here and shared the 7-course chef tasting menu and a 5-course build-your-own tasting, which means we tried a significant portion of the menu, much to our delight. The food was expertly prepared and seasoned, beautifully composed (but not pretentious or gimmicky), and perfectly portioned for a tasting. Highlights were the stuffed quail and crispy duck leg. Not only was the food fantastic, but the service was wonderful. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and set the tone for a really memorable meal. Knowing we were sharing everything, he paired and paced our courses for the best possible progression. All around a phenomenal dining experience."

Our waitress was not only very friendly and courteous but attentive without being overly so. She made excellent choices for the wine pairings that accentuated the chef's inspirations superbly. This was our first visit to five fifty five but we've already made plans to return. Highly recommend!"

A little later that day we decided to add a third person to the reservation and they were very welcoming and accommodating even though they were busy. I have an allergy to garlic which provides a challenge for many chefs, but Five Fifty-Five met the challenge. We each had the "Chef's Tasting" and made sure to order something different for each course, so we go to try 15 different selections. The items which appeared to be straightforward were as expected and delicious. Those which appeared to be complicated, unique and interesting were all that. There was something for picky eaters and something for the adventurous."

  • "The meal we had at Five Fifty-Five was very good albeit pricey . I would heartily recommend the grilled Caesar there which is a small bunch of romaine (I think) lettuce which has been placed on the grill than drizzled with a creamy Caesar dressing (yummy) and topped with garlicky croutons. I chose to have a couple of small plates rather than a large and that worked out perfectly. Portion sizes were fine and I left comfortably full. I had the Berry Foie Gras and the Bang Island Mussels. I can easily say those were the BEST mussels I have ever had.......large mussels in the most delicious spicy broth. Easily the best part of my meal. The service was attentive and courteous as well providing for a very enjoyable experience."

  • "My husband and I dined at 555 while visiting Portland seven years ago and had a fantastic experience. Went back on Friday night and was disappointed. Maybe we ordered wrong, maybe it was an off night, but I'll never complain about the price of an entree if I'm wowwed, but I just wasn't. Next time we're in town we'll stop by for a drink but try dinner elsewhere, hopefully sooner than 2021."

  • "From the warm welcome through the 5 fantastic courses, the espresso finale and fond farewell, my husband and I enjoyed our dinner at Five Fifty-Five thoroughly. Every taste was a treat. We especially enjoyed the "foie" berry shortcake, a very successful combination of flavors and textures. We loved being able to choose the tasting menu courses from each category, mixing and matching things we knew we would not want to share with options to maximize our tasting opportunities. Superior,service enhanced the evening, although I can't say the same about the open kitchen. As much as we respect the chef and entire kitchen staff, we'd rather hear each other than orders being called and the sounds of the batterie de cuisine."

  • "My other half and I dined here for the very first time, and it certainly won't be the last. We both chose the chef's tasting menu and each course was absolutely delicious!! The only negative is that the servings were a little on the small side. I didn't think we were going to be getting full sized servings, but my fiance was still hungry and looking for snacks by the time we got home. That probably shouldn't happen after spending $200 on dinner for 2. That would be my only negative from our dining experience, but it tasted so good that I won't complain too much"
