The scallops were spectacular, the mussels as well - and the taste of the lamb meatballs and gnocchi will never be forgotten. We were absolutely delighted with the service and the value - our whole meal with wine was $130 for two, partly because they offer a choice of many small plates that can be split among diners. Just a really outstanding meal, one I will not forget soon. I always go to Fore Street in Portland, and love that restaurant too, but I am dreaming of my next trip to 555. (Not for nothing - they were very gracious with me - I screwed up the reservation and made it for Friday night when I meant Saturday, and they called me and did not get irritated with me- in fact, they re-booked me. Lovely atmosphere, though I imagine it gets quite loud on weekends when crowded. Ask for a table upstairs for privacy & a birds-eye-view of the space below. The chef's tasting menu options (one 5 course, one 8 course) were very appealing; my friend ordered the 5 course & they were accommodating of a few small substitutions. I had the pork loin & pork belly main course- it was decadent. He ordered peppered scallops & mussels & raved about both. For dessert you MUST try the homemade ice cream- the salt & vinegar was unique & tasty. The cheese course was great, as was the service. A+. We shared the miticana cheese with crostini, toasted sweetened nuts and we added the home made fig bars. All items served were balanced, as well as perfect in temperature, portion and form. The wine pairing with the pots de creme was well met. We changed to a floral wine instead of the suggested (expensive) pairing on the goat cheese cake and were pleasantly surprised. The orange saffron gastrique served with the pots de creme was sublime. Eat dessert or cheese here and feel free to take the suggested wine pairings. The dessert and cheese menu is fairly priced and beautifully prepared. Prices are high but definitely worth it. Food presented well (I loved eating upstairs and watching the plates being prepared) and tasted so good. I can tell when the meal is excellent when the tastes, odors, presentation, colors, and textures slow me down (otherwise I eat too fast and too much).

The open kitchen allows you to see what the chefs are up to, whether you're on the main level or up in the balcony which rims the main dining room. For foodies, there's something magical about watching pros make the food you're enjoying. The multi-course (ours was 5 courses) tasting menu highlighted signature dishes and cheeses from the menu (the cheeses are excellent - many are from the finest cheesemakers in Vermont), and the portion size meant that at the end of the meal I was pleasantly full without feeling overfull. The room is in fact an old fire station. The kitchen occupies a section of the main floor. Decor is dull. But the food and service are exceptional. Most famous among main dishes is a lobster mac and cheese (did they invent this dish?) which is excellent but too rich for my taste. I had a roast duck--not the trendy duck breast--which was just perfect, as was lemon souffle for dessert.
