Diner Reviews
  • "I found this restaurant by chance, we were planning a trip to Maine for the weekend and decided to go a little farther north than we ususally go. Decided on dinner in Portland. Googled restaurants and 555 came highly recommended. The service was wonderful, the staff is polite and watchful but not overly in your face. One time they even replaced silverware and I never noticed!! The FOOD was unbelievable, from my Asparagus salad to the Pork, each mouthful was a new flavor. They have hit this out of the park!! We heard while there that travel channel is visiting soon, after that you will never get in the place! Glad we got there. if you love food and new experiences this is a Must!!!"

  • "excellent, attentive service and interesting menu. My salad was delicious with fresh and plentiful greens and just the right accents (goat cheese and beets). Entrée (hangar steak) was on the tough side but my friend's scallops were delicious! The little tiny "tidbits" served before and after were delightful. Expensive. PS You need LOTS of time to make a choice from the drinks menu!!"

  • "I've enjoyed 555 many times. This time I ordered light; and the gnocci was too salty. at first it was OK then I couldn't finish it , didn't want to end the meal on a down note. I'm telling you because I often oversalt my own cooking because -- I love salt! But this was too salty. thanks."

  • "If this isn't the best restaurant in Maine, it's pretty darn close to being number one. Everything we had was wonderful. In particular, the soup and gnocchi were outstanding. If you are looking to celebrate an event, or just enjoy a fabulous meal, go to 555 Congress Street."

  • "Very poor service, waiter was unengaged! Bad value. Nice food way overpriced. We won't be going back!"

  • "This is based on my 3rd experience dining at 555. I would have to say that, compared to other restaurants in Portland, it is overpriced for the food and service. Our server seemed uninformed and not terribly enthusiastic; the service was mediocre. The "Prix Fixe" option for the evening was a selection of available menu items for exactly the same price as they would have been if selected individually. In other words, electing the prix fixe meant narrowing your range of options for no benefit. If there was some benefit, our server didn't bother to explain it. The food quality was uneven. My cheese plate was delightful and creative, but my wife's salad was drippy with dressing. My main course was ok, my wife's was very good. Overall, OK."

  • "We arrived late for our reservation but they were very accommodating. We were seated upstairs, which was fun because we could look down over the center. I ordered a Caesar salad with white anchovies (love them) to start. They grilled the romaine lettuce which gave it a very nice flavor and the dressing tasted home made, but I did not ask. I ordered the peppered scallops for my entrée and it was superb. The atmosphere was lovely. I was out with 2 vegetarians and they were very happy with their grilled tofu veggie plate."

  • "Maybe it's because I ate here after a weekend in NYC, but just not understanding the hype around this restaurant. It was good, but not outstanding. The atmosphere was subdued on a Monday night and decor typical. The deconstructed oyster chowder off the chef's tasting menu was a highlight. Other à la carte dishes, while good, didn't live up to the hype of the restaurant. Service was passable, but my server seemed new to the job and lacked knowledge of both the bar and menu, causing her to have to check for nearly every question. I might eat here again, but honestly, there are other, better restaurants in Portland."

  • "We had the prix fixe 5-course dinner and couldn't be happier with the result. The service was attentive without being intrusive, the timing was perfect, and the food done extremely well. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to have a fantastic, relaxing dinner with terrific food and a fine atmosphere."

  • "Given all the hype 555 gets, we were a little surprised by the unimpressiveness of our meal. It's not that anything was overtly wrong, but rather that we expected to be more wowed than we were. The celery root soup was fine but had nothing to distinguish it other than that it was on the edge of too thick. Our pork osso buco was tender and flavorful, but in the end it was basically just that... braised pork. The pine nut puree that accompanied it, something that could have added that extra zing, was pasty and burnt tasting. The dessert lemon drops (essentially lemon granita) were surprisingly poorly presented - basically shapeless blobs plopped on a platter. My "artisan" cheeses were bland and uninteresting. Perhaps an off night?"

  • "Made a reservation through open table. Although we arrived a few minutes early, we did have to wait thirty minutes for our table. When we originally were seated, they put us in the bar area, but the hostess was very understanding when we requested a seat in the dining room instead. The food was all delicious. I think out of all the courses, the dessert was the only disappointing one. My pork loin was awesome."

  • "disappointed with the terrible mini sized portions-overpriced for samples of food. sons steak was literally only 2" by 2"- please, a steak should be at least 6 oz .Husband got 2 scallops on top of about 2 TBS of pureed potato or parsnip have no idea since it was so small of an amount it didn't register in the mouth. we left starving. We moved here from Sacramento, CA and should have known that since the Chef was from NAPA, CA we should have stayed away - All of Napas restaurants are a big ripoff overpriced with miniature portions at every restaurant just like the mass produced low quality wines Napa wines versus the super good wines and foods that you can enjoy in Sacramento - especially the Placerville wines are the best!!!!"

  • "555 never disappoints. The restaurant had a busy night. Not only was it restaurant week, but there was a concert in town, as well. However, our night was perfect: great 5-course tasting menu, creative cocktails and fabulous wine list. We are so glad we chose to dine here!"

  • "Probably the best scallops we've ever had. I now realize how over cooked most other retaurants serve scallops. Definitely a solid restaurant and plan to go back next time we're in Portland."

  • "The food looked amazing and the ambience was great. However, the quality and quantity of the food left much to be desired especially when compared to the price. I would never go back."

  • "555 offers a well balanced menu with perfect portion sizes. The tasting menu is created to tease your palate with a variety of flavors that all combine to make each bite a different experience."

  • "If anything, 555 is underrated This is a superb restaurant. The 6 course meal is well done and there is no slop in the system. No filler dishes here. Both the beet and caesar salads were excellent. The scottish (smoked) salmon was a highlight but then again, so weren't the gnocchi. The scallops and strip loin were both crafty dishes. A lot of flavors. Well cooked and not overdone. 555 is good. Really good. Need context? Better than L'Espalier (Boston) and much, much better than White Barn Inn (Kennebunk)."

  • "The food was outstanding specifically the muscles. Also the wine list was enormous. Lastly the waitstaff was excellent. The only downfall the resturant had was the temperature, it was extremely warm."

  • "food was amazing - must try the foie gras terrine and carrot soup. All things considered this is a foodie heaven and extremely reasonable prices (3 course prix fixe). Server was very attentive and knowledgable and atmosphere was relaxed and romantic."

  • "We had an early reservation before a show and enjoyed the restaurant with just the early crowd. The grilled caesar was amazing -- a stunning tower of greens lightly glazed and grilled, parmesan shavings, a little dressing, and expertly woven in white anchovies meticulously deboned. Hanger steak and pheasant courses were equally spectacular. All is all an amazing expires, topped off with a pre fix third course of cheese and ice cream and well made espresso. Could not recommend them more highly."

  • "We had an extraordinary dinner on a very busy night at 5-5-5. The food was perfectly prepared, the service attentive and the wine list still the best in Portland."

  • "A five course tasting menu started well, but courses 4 and 5 took forever. Even though we had preorderd the desert souffle ahead of time, it came 25 minutes after the previous course. Downstairs very noisy - there are upstairs tables, but we were not seated there despite stating twice that this was to be a special occasion. Disappointing."

  • "Loved this place. Went here for my birthday and much special attention was given. My daughter was delighted when she received a mocktail in a martini glass! The food was imaginative and great efforts were made to provide local ingredients. There are very few places that meet my food standards and this restaurant has been added to the list."

  • "I had heard very good things, but the reality didn't meet my expectations. We had the three-course menu, so maybe the chef's 8-course selection would have been the way to go. There were two main problems: 1. Our first and second courses came much too quickly, and our amuse-bouche came during our first course. I'm not sure if it was supposed to come before the first course or between the first and second, but while I was eating my soup was not the right time. 2) I apparently received the wrong second course, because I received another when I was almost done with the one I had. The explanation was that I got the steak from Menu #2 when I had ordered the steak from Menu #1. The one I ordered was better -- the next day."

  • "This place was great, service was top notch, and the food was incredible. The person I was with asked for chocolate milk and the waitress sadly said they didn't have any, a few minutes later she came back with a glass of homemade chocolate milk. She had melted down some chocolate and mixed it herself. The food was out of this world too, I will be going back here every time I am in Portland!"

  • "We took our adult children to 555 to celebrate a birthday ... we had been before, but they had not. It was a real treat for all of us. My cauliflower soup was perfect on a cold night and my scallops were huge and perfectly cooked. My husband had the vegetarian special which was a perfectly prepared gnocchi. The "kids" had different steaks and each was cooked to their preferences. The turtle soufflé was an awesome ending to a nice evening inJanuary in Maine! We will be heading back to 555 next month for a Sunday brunch with friends and I an already looking forward to it !"

  • "I knew we were in for a nice evening when the hostess offered to take our coats. From start to finish, the waiter (Dixon) was attentive, informative and professional. Each course looked like art, and was absolutely delicious. We were seated on the balcony, which was fantastic. Very pleased with the whole experience! Thank you!"

  • "Don't get me wrong, our experience was fine, but not what we have come to expect from this highly rated restaurant. Our server was very accommodating and clearly went the extra mile to make our experience a good one. The foie gras appetizer was excellent, the hanger steak good, the duck breast tough (parts of it couldn't even be chewed), the soufflé excellent. Our most recent past experience there was outstanding. I guess I was surprised by the quality and taste of the duck. Will we go back? Probably, but not for a while (remember, there are tons of good places to eat in Portland). Would I recommend it to a friend? Probably, but relating this caveat."
