Diner Reviews
  • "Total experience excellent even with the cappachino machine busted"

  • "Great menu! A little something for everyone! The option of a tasting menu is perfect to get a taste of all the courses!"
    Dined on 7/20/2014
  • "Had an amazing meal - Fava bean & mint salad was incredible!!"

  • "We had the 5 course tasting menu, choosing one option from each category. I loved the portions, though those looking for leftovers may be disappointed. Each course, was flavorful and a bit surprising--in a good way. Our service was great, informative when needed, always "of course you can" when asking about ordering options. A return visit, and we were not disappointed."

  • "My husband and son and I chose 555 to celebrate a very special occasion and we were not disappointed. The mussels were delicious - perhaps the best we've ever eaten. Our waiter was well informed about the menu and helpful in clarifying our choices. The service was efficient and unobtrusive and the overall pacing of our meal was just right - no easy feat since one of us ordered the 5 course tasting menu and the other two ordered starters and entrees. This was our second visit to 555 and because we don't each rich food that often we are not likely to return again soon but it will remain an obvious choice for special occasions."

  • "We really enjoyed our perch overlooking the food prep which we watched off and on. Almost everything we ate was quite amazing, from the melon soup to the pork belly, to the fish dishes. We had the chef's choice including the wine pairings as well as the choice of 5 items, one from each category. It was a great way to taste a wide variety of preparations."

  • "Got the five course meal with some oysters added on, everything was absolutely perfect, including the very knowledgeable waiter"
    Dined on 7/19/2014
  • "Standouts were the bread basket (in my book, bread and salad are good restaurant indicators), the chilled melon soup (a work of art), and the amazing chicken with succotash and cornbread (you never had chicken like this before.). Also, the house bottle of pinot noir was excellent."

  • "Great 5 course menu with wine pairing. Seating upstairs is nice, as it puts you away from most of the bar noise. Can certainly recommend the food, and portions are not too large."

  • "Enjoyed a wonderful dinner. Our server, Laura, was outstanding. One of us took advantage of the five course tasting menu. Everything we ordered was very good. The only drawback was that at times the noise level was too high."

  • "Thanks for making our annual trek to 555 such an excellent choice for celebrating our two anniversaries."
    Dined on 7/17/2014
  • "The food at this restaurant was stellar and had an amazing fusion of flavors but sadly the poor service trumped the experience. The service was aloof and we had to waive our server down several times when we needed anything. Service was deplorable for a restaurant to charge these kinds of prices for such a poor service experience. Not at all what one would expect when paying about $100 per person for a meal."
    Dined on 7/17/2014
  • "20 minutes before our order was taken. One hour before our entrees arrived, and no explanation or apology from our waiter. The truffled lobster Mac and Cheese lost its truffle flavor by the time it reached our table if it ever had any. If you want a fine dining experience in Portland, Fore Street Restaurant is a far better choice."

  • "My friend and I came here and shared the 7-course chef tasting menu and a 5-course build-your-own tasting, which means we tried a significant portion of the menu, much to our delight. The food was expertly prepared and seasoned, beautifully composed (but not pretentious or gimmicky), and perfectly portioned for a tasting. Highlights were the stuffed quail and crispy duck leg. Not only was the food fantastic, but the service was wonderful. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and set the tone for a really memorable meal. Knowing we were sharing everything, he paired and paced our courses for the best possible progression. All around a phenomenal dining experience."

  • "I had hear from locals that this restaurant was overpriced. I found the price to be appropriate for an establishment of this caliber. Food and service were both excellent. I had the lobster mac and cheese and could not have been happier. Will definitely visit again when we return to Portland."

  • "Terrific, delicious, wonderfully presented food; you are pampered & made to feel special throughout your dining experience"

  • "We enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant. Our waitress was friendly and good. My meal of scallops was good. My husband had the hangar steak and brocollini. The brocollini was soooo salty it was inedible. Being new to the area and it being our anniversary we were disappointed by our meals."

  • "We went here for our anniversary. Making the reservation through OpenTable was easy and effortless. We ended up with an excellent table by a window. The whole dining experience beginning to end was fantastic. The five course dinner was perfect. Our waitress was attentive and so nice. I didn't even notice that we were there for 2.5 hours. Everything seemed to be timed perfectly."

  • "We have eaten at 555 many times over the years, but it had been awhile since we had had the opportunity. This past Saturday, we did have the chance, and we had an excellent meal and overall experience. Highly recommend!"

  • "My wife and I went there for our anniversary and we weren't disappointed. We both had the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairings and were overwhelmed with the flavorful creations presented us. Our waitress was not only very friendly and courteous but attentive without being overly so. She made excellent choices for the wine pairings that accentuated the chef's inspirations superbly. This was our first visit to five fifty five but we've already made plans to return. Highly recommend!"

  • "I recently ate at 555. The food was awesome and the service was good. I would recommend this restaurant to a friend."
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "Five Fifty-Five is one of the most under-rated restaurants. In a city with many great restaurants, it is near the top. It consistently puts out imaginative and skillfully executed dishes."

  • "This was our second visit to Five Fifty-Five and we were very impressed again with both the food and service. The lobster mac and cheese is unbelievably good and well worth the price. The server was friendly and very attentive and the restaurant itself is beautifully decorated. The drink list is impressive, with several cocktail, beer, and wine choices. Five Fifty-Five is definitely one of the best restaurants in Portland and well worth the visit."

  • "Great return - a few off things (service) but a great experience."

  • "I celebrated my birthday there and loved every minute of it. The lobster Mac and cheese was amazing. My husband's steak was a bit undercooked but the waitress graciously had the chef rectify the situation,"

  • "I made my reservation for 2 through Open Table - really easy. They called to confirm on the day I had reserved. A little later that day we decided to add a third person to the reservation and they were very welcoming and accommodating even though they were busy. I have an allergy to garlic which provides a challenge for many chefs, but Five Fifty-Five met the challenge. We each had the "Chef's Tasting" and made sure to order something different for each course, so we go to try 15 different selections. The items which appeared to be straightforward were as expected and delicious. Those which appeared to be complicated, unique and interesting were all that. There was something for picky eaters and something for the adventurous."

  • "The meal we had at Five Fifty-Five was very good albeit pricey . I would heartily recommend the grilled Caesar there which is a small bunch of romaine (I think) lettuce which has been placed on the grill than drizzled with a creamy Caesar dressing (yummy) and topped with garlicky croutons. I chose to have a couple of small plates rather than a large and that worked out perfectly. Portion sizes were fine and I left comfortably full. I had the Berry Foie Gras and the Bang Island Mussels. I can easily say those were the BEST mussels I have ever had.......large mussels in the most delicious spicy broth. Easily the best part of my meal. The service was attentive and courteous as well providing for a very enjoyable experience."

  • "My husband and I dined at 555 while visiting Portland seven years ago and had a fantastic experience. Went back on Friday night and was disappointed. Maybe we ordered wrong, maybe it was an off night, but I'll never complain about the price of an entree if I'm wowwed, but I just wasn't. Next time we're in town we'll stop by for a drink but try dinner elsewhere, hopefully sooner than 2021."

  • "Came for my 25th anniversary. It was lovely. Food was fabulous, very unusual. Each dish in the five course tasting menu was delicious, very unique tastes. I've already recommended it. Good luck!"

  • "Truly enjoyed the experience. Thoughtful, vibrant, brilliantly executed. The 5 course tasting was fabulous."

  • "From the warm welcome through the 5 fantastic courses, the espresso finale and fond farewell, my husband and I enjoyed our dinner at Five Fifty-Five thoroughly. Every taste was a treat. We especially enjoyed the "foie" berry shortcake, a very successful combination of flavors and textures. We loved being able to choose the tasting menu courses from each category, mixing and matching things we knew we would not want to share with options to maximize our tasting opportunities. Superior, service enhanced the evening, although I can't say the same about the open kitchen. As much as we respect the chef and entire kitchen staff, we'd rather hear each other than orders being called and the sounds of the batterie de cuisine."

  • "The chefs tasting menu is beyond amazing. Each course offers new flavors and textures that all compliment each other nicely. The thing that was the most amazing to me and said the most about the chefs skill was that I never had to use any salt or pepper, everything was seasoned to perfection."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "This restaurant was amazing. I would call it my best dining experience ever. We will be back!"

  • "My other half and I dined here for the very first time, and it certainly won't be the last. We both chose the chef's tasting menu and each course was absolutely delicious!! The only negative is that the servings were a little on the small side. I didn't think we were going to be getting full sized servings, but my fiance was still hungry and looking for snacks by the time we got home. That probably shouldn't happen after spending $200 on dinner for 2. That would be my only negative from our dining experience, but it tasted so good that I won't complain too much"

  • "555 is a long time favorite of my wife and I. Food, service, ambiance are ambiance are always top notch."

  • "We've enjoyed 555 on visits to Portland for more than a decade. Not only haven't they rested on their laurels, they've continued to innovate and excel. We had the tasting menu and enjoyed an extraordinary and beautifully designed white gazpacho, excellent foie gras, scallops et al. Our server provided insightful perspective on both the menu and the eclectic wine list. We also find 555 a very good price/value. As New Yorkers, I only wish we could have an overall dining experience like this at home!"

  • "We had our anniversary dinner there, and when we arrived, our table was ready, complete with a "Happy Anniversary" note. Service was excellent, food was great. We've already recommended it to several friends."

  • "As early diners we were shuttled off to the very top floor which was gloomy and poorly lit for a sunny sunday morning. Eggs ordered sunny-side-up were clearly undercooked and even the waitress agreed with us - she offered to send them back but it was so late into the meal when she checked that we didn't have the time to wait. The Strawberry and Rhubarb French Toast was clearly being kept warm for serving as it was soggy and only just warm on arrival and the 'rhubarb' was three tiny blobs of puree. I had to ask for more coffee from another passing waiter where he served me half a cup as his jug emptied and never returned. Very disappointing"

  • "We enjoyed the 7 course chef's menu and wine tasting. Eclectic, whimsical and tasty! Our server was knowledgeable and explained each dish and pairing. If the cost does not deter you, I encourage you to experience this choice. To us, it was worth every penny."

  • "We had eaten at 555 a year ago and had an excellent experience. We returned, had an excellent meal, but our waiter was less than accommodating, and in general irritating. This is the first time in memory that I have left less than a 20% tip. I felt as if I was judged from the second that we walked through the door. We were not dressed up, we took a last minute trip. We had had a drink and appetizer prior, so the chef's tasting menu was not what we wanted period. Our waiter was visibly unhappy with us. When we opted not to have desert, we were asked if we were "sure about that". Long story short, we're two professionals who just wanted to escape for a night and a nice meal. Food was great waiter not great."
