A word from Five Fifty-Five

Steve and Michelle Corry, the proprietors of Five Fifty-Five, arrived in Portland armed with a passionate vision and extensive experience in the restaurant industry. Steve began his culinary career as a brew master at several breweries in Northern California. In 1999, he attended the New England… Culinary Institute in Burlington Vermont. After graduating in 2001, he returned to California to work at Domaine Chandon in Napa Valley. A graduate of Boston University with a Bachelor's Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration, Michelle Corry has worked at numerous prestigious establishments, including the French Laundry in Napa. Together, they have envisioned a dining experience that would combine a comfortable atmosphere, professional service, and fresh, simple, and delicious food sourced locally. "Food quality was very good but portions were unbelievably small for the price. I am not a big eater but even I thought they should have enhanced the portion sizes. I got the scallops(~5 medium) which were served with barely 1/4 cup whipped potatoes and approximately 2 green beans cut into 6 pieces. I will not be returning, but if you go I would recommend getting the $60. testing menu which gives you 4 courses (app,entree,cheese,dessert), so you get enough food to fill you up. The atmosphere was nice, pretty building. Staff was Ok, but felt more snobby than warm and friendly."

"The food and service was very good and our table was in a nice, fairly private location. There was a table , on the other side that was pretty noisy but that can happen in any restaurant. Overall, it was a very nice evening and I would recommend this restaurant."

"Mostly excellent food. We had the tasting menu and enjoyed every course. the Cream of Celery soup, the Mussels,the Pepper Encrusted Scallops and the Cheese Plate stood out as exceptional dishes. The atmosphere was very pleasant with a calming and beautiful decor and the service was efficient and knowledgeable. Though the wine list was big, we were less than impressed by selections and the white wines we had by the glass were served too cold."

"This restaurant rivals Fore Street. Not yet quite as mature, but on its heels. I went for brunch and would highly recommend it. The eggs were so delicious they must have been fresh from the farm. I have lactose intolerance and they bent over backward to care with the ingredients in my meal. A great value for fabulous food. I'm from Cambridge MA and will be stopping in again my next trip north which will not be soon enough!"

"I was really disappointed in the Brunch. The only thing I thought outstanding was the starter bread. The rest of the food was mediocre. We had the breakfast item with sausage, bacon, potatoes, egg and toast. Everything except the egg and toast was precooked and tasted like it. The sausage was cold inside, potatoes were rubbery as if they had been under a light to long, and the bacon was hard. I expect their dinners are better since we have heard so much about this restaurant. It was our first time and we won't go back-for brunch anyway."

"From start to finish, everything here was memorable. Great food, staff and ambience. Portions were a bit small for the price, but the taste and experience made up the difference. Make sure to top off the evening with a salted caramel."
