Diner Reviews
  • "We have been going to the Five Crowns for over 30 years and have found that experience has deteriorated over the last two or three years. Food quality, ambiance (change away from the old English) & service deterioration are evident."

  • "Love 5 Crowns, who doesn't? Quiet.classy, romantic. Mr. Tommy M.'s regaling with stories and history also makes dining fun and memorable, Only complaints this evening were lukewarm food and a server that, though friendly enough, seemed in a hurry, and performed her duties in a merely perfunctory manner. They weren't that busy, and for the price, there's no reason food shouldn't arrive piping hot. Will go back though."

  • "The best prime rib in the world? Yes! We have been dining at Lawry's (parent company of Five Crowns) for years. When living in Chicago and now California, we never fail to receive first-rate service and memorable prime rib. Seafood choices are available as well as other tempting items."

  • "We dearly love the prime rib. It literally melts in your mouth (English Cut). The atmosphere reminds us of England with lovely views from the dining room windows onto the patio."

  • "We celebrated our daughter's birthday and had a perfect evening. There were 6 in our party and everyone enjoyed the evening immensely."

  • "We love the Five Crowns and dine here every chance we get. Their menu does change depending on what is available and fresh along with their well known prime rib. Everything was delicious from start to finish."

  • "An established location that my wife and I wanted to go to, turned out to be the local hangout for the over 60 crowd.... Nothing wrong with that, but definitely not the place for my wife's 28th Bday!! Onto the food........ Hmmm..... A bit disappointing, any place that hails as a fine dining establishment, but can't serve hot mashed potatoes, leaves me pondering "how hard is that to get right"!! Salmon tartare was delicious Risotto was quite good, something crunchy in there should be left out, maybe artichoke?? Dunno... Do away with it, it messes with the mouth feel Pork was a bit undercooked.... Not a good thing for pork Mashed were served cold... Twice!! Even after the sweet server (Britney) insisted on letting chef know. Dessert comped"

  • "The beef was excellent but everything else that came with it was too creamy and rich. You have a choice of Creamed corn or Creamed spinach. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant. I would go back onlqy if I was dying for prime rib."

  • "My wife and I have enjoyed 5 Crowns for a number of years. It is our "go to" place for birthdays and anniversaries. I appreciate the traditions, but also welcome the newer more creative additions to the menu. My wife usually sticks with the Prime Rib. While I enjoy that also, I like to try to get more fish into my diet so I often have chosen the Salmon or other seafood item. The service is consistently excellent. We have used the "Two for" specials a few times and find them a good value. Over the years we have had occasion to visit your sister restaurants-Tam O'Shanter and Lawry's (in Las Vegas). They are good, with a similar menu, but we continue to prefer our favorite-5 Crowns."

  • "We've been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. Plenty of variety and several old favorites."

  • "The music did not fit the atmosphere, too loud for dining and I cannot eat ambiance. What was a landmark Is us now a bus stop for under cooked food that was also cold. Had to send my dinner back! The only thing that was good was the hot dinner rolls. This is not the restaurant I have patronized for years. Go to Antonello's! Consistently good food. We will not be back to 5 Crowns."

  • "I will not eat prime rib anywhere but Lawry's Restaurants. My sister and I always celebrate our birthdays there, as we did last Sunday night. The only thing I will always miss are the times we sat around the piano bar and sang all evening long. Those were the greatest times! We also love to go to the Side Door for early dinners. Five Crowns will always be our very favorite place to dine!"

  • "The Five Crowns, like the other Lawry's restaurants, still has the best and most delicious prime rib dinners. The Five Crowns has a number of other dishes as well, so patrons can eat there as often as they like and enjoy a variety of tasty menu selections. The service is excellent. Sadly, they toned down the 16th century Tudor theme which was so charming and unique, but the ambience is still warm and inviting."

  • "Service was great. The ambiance was quiet and relaxed. The food was underwhelming. For the price I was expecting to be blown away, but was disappointed at the taste, texture, and overall quality of the prime rib I ordered."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "We celebrated our 20th anniversary at 5 Crowns. The ambience and service were excellent. The cheese charcuterie could have offered a little more. My prime rib was cooked to perfection, but, was somewhat tough, and not a lot of flavor. But, all in all, a very pleasent evening."

  • "Our experience was amazing. Our server was a gem. Fun, witty and informative about the history of the restaurant. We have not been to the restaurant in some time but now will visit often! Loved it."

  • "We've been dining at 5 Crowns for over 35 years...it's always been our "go to" place for birthday or anniversary celebration dinners. Sunday, we took our children, their spouses and 2 young grandsons to celebrate my husband's birthday. We had a 5:30 reservation so we could eat, relax and be finished before the little ones grew tired. Service was so SLOW, we weren't served our entrees until 6:45. When dinner finally came, the roast beef was fatty, half rare - half well done (on the same slice), potatoes were crusty as if they'd been under a warming lamp...and we were all so ready to leave after the long wait and challenge of keeping the little ones entertained no one enjoyed their meal. No explanation or apology about the wait..."

  • "Every aspect of our experience was outstanding. The staff were very warm and pleasant. Service was quick. We felt like royalty. The food was perfect. Double cut rib eye was huge and very savory. The Scottish salmon was the best salmon I've ever had. It was so tender, moist, and flavorful. The truffle Mac and cheese was very tasty but was almost too cheesy. We got engaged that night and we were blessed with some celebratory champagne and then a celebratory desert at the end. Everyone there really cares about the customer and the experience. We will go again."

  • "This is a permanent place on our dining list! This is the place if you like prime rib! The service is outstanding, and if you want a great bar scene you can go to side bar located inside the lobby of Five Crowns. Well be back!!"

  • "Newport Beach "treasure" showing its age. Needs an upgrade in the interior. Prime Rib was just average nothing special. Our server was friendly and competent. It had been many years since we have dined here and I now know why."

  • "The Five Crowns in Corona del Mar is one of the finest restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of eating at. The food is delicious, our servers Maria and Rebecca were friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. I highly recommend asking for them. It was so nice that a manager came and visited my date and I just to make sure everything was going well. I love the Five Crowns!"

  • "One of the best OC Restaurant week deals! Most places skimp on the portions for OCRW, but not here! Our starters and desserts were full size, and so was our prime rib, about a 8 ounce serving. We left the restaurant full! For a little more than the price of the main course, you get a full meal and great service."

  • "My husband and I came here for restaurant week and had a wonderful time. The food was exquisite and the service was top-notch. It would be a great place to spend a special occasion and the decor makes for a beautiful and romantic dinner location."

  • "Five Crowns has been one of our family special occasion restaurants for many years. This evening was just two girl friends enjoying a reunion at a favorite restaurant. We ordered from the Restaurant Week menu and found the traditional prime rib dinner excellent as usual. The Restuarant Week wine list was a nice surprise and very much appreciated. A lovely, comfortable evening."

  • "Just that. I am very picky, and it is hard to keep me happy on all fronts. Well, this restaurant experience was just breathtaking. The best I have ever had, I think. And I have been to many fine dining, expensive restaurants. We will be coming back here monthly, if not weekly."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 53rd anniversary at Five Crowns. It was a wonderful experience for both of us. I must admit it was a bit expensive, but a very memorial night. Thank you"

  • "We decided to go to the opening night of OC Restaurant Week, after looking over several menus we chose this one. The wedge salad was lacking the tangy blue cheese crumbles and the dressing tasted like bland ranch. Most important part of the 1st course..I pulled a long at least 8 inch hair out of my mouth from the salad. UGH! I tried to eat my shrimp dish but the polenta was like paste at the bottom of the plate and besides I could not get the hair out of my mind. My husband had the prime rib, cut was so thin and small, very disappointing and the creamed spinach.where is the cream the cream corn no better. We both finished with the cheese cake which did not taste anything like the description on the menu. we only enjoyed the wine we brought."

  • "We have always met with friends and relatives to have a special dinner at 5 Crowns for the past 20-25 years and we have always been pleased with the food and service. Tommy, now ambassador, is still there to meet and greet and seeing him is a special treat !"

  • "Our first time at 5 Crowns. We've wanted to go for years but this was certainly worth the wait. Food and service excellent. We ate indoors but the outside dining area is a great addition. Perfect for just having drinks and hanging out. The overall experience was outstanding."

  • "Our party of seven was seated in the outdoor garden area which was perfect for a small group. It was fairly quiet with low music in the background and heated to an ideal temperature. The sevice was very good. Our waiter had an amazing understanding of both the dinner menu and wine list. His suggestions for wine and food pairings were ideal. The menu was limited with one fish offering, one vegetarian meal, and too few desserts. As a strict vegetarian, I opted for the risotto which was very salty and gummy. The remaining six diners all has prime rib or ribeye. One prime rib was very fatty but all the other cuts were met with great satisfaction. A bit pricey at just under $500. Overall, it was a good experience, but likely I won't return."

  • "We looked forward to a romantic evening dining at the 5 Crowns, when we arrived we were seated at a small (i mean small) table next to other small tables about 2 feet away. We were then directed to a larger table. The wait staff were great. I ordered their special prime rib. It was special alright not medium rare but blood rare and the thinnest meat slice i every received for a "high class restaurant". No, i did not take it back, my mistake. The ambiance is not like i experienced 10 years ago, clusters of tables, apparently with the idea lets crowd them in. Not likely to revisit anytime soon."

  • "We visit the Five Crowns when ever possible. Live in Lakewood but drive to Corona Del Mar at the drop of hat. A real pleasure to relax in an elegant atmosphere and enjoy an exquisite meal. Wonderful meals in an upscale atmosphere which never disappoint you. If you want to be a little more casual, The Side Door, (bar/lounge area) is the place to try. Just walk in off the street through "the side door" not the front door and enjoy drinks or a full dinner there too. The Five Crowns is really a treasure of Corona Del Mar."

  • "We've been dining at Five Crowns for many years. This restaurant has lovely ambiance and the people who serve here are so warm and friendly. We just love Tommie, who's been around forever and talks to us like we are all old friends -- he's the best! Prime rib is their specialty and it is fantastic. Lovely restaurant."

  • "Our experience was nothing short of excellent. From the moment we walked in the door until we left, we felt well served. I had the Five Crowns cut prime rib with the creamed corn (yum) and mashed potatos, and my wife had the Filet Mignon. Both dishes were excellent, and both cuts of meat were properly prepared and very tender. My wife commented on how much she enjoyed her Mushroom Soup appetizer (the mushrooms were pureed into a creamy soup -- delicious), and the wedge salad we shared was quite tasty. The selection of wine is excellent, and they even offer a small selection of very upscale wines by the glass or in a 2oz. taster. We'll be back for sure!"
