Diner Reviews
  • "We used to go to the Five Crowns on a regular basis, but since they changed the menu, & wine list, we only go there now for the prime rib. Even it has changed in portion sizes, which are now cut thinner, no matter what size you order. I ordered the smallest, my husband ordered the second to the largest and the major difference was his came with a bone and mine did not. It is still a nice restaurant, and the food is good, just not as special as it used to be."

  • "The Five Crowns is still one of the best restaurants in Orange County. Every bit as good if not better than the Tam O'Shanter, her sister restaurant in the Lawry's chain. The food was the best. Great salads and wonderful prime rib cut the way my wife and I like it. The surroundings were absolutely wonderful and the service was the best. Our server went out of his way to make our anniversary celebration the best ever. This restaurant remains one of our favorites!!"

  • "My family went to Five Crowns when it first opened in the 60's. It is still good. The atmosphere reminds you of an English home and pub. My meal was delicious. The service was attentive."

  • "I've been dining at Five Crowns for more than 30 years now and I've never had a bad meal. I always look forward to the excellent meat, fowl, and wine at this historic establishment."

  • "Literally the best prime rib I've ever had, and I've had prime at a lot of nice restaurants over the years. 5 crowns remains true to its roots with excellent service, food and ambiance in one of the classiest restaurants in orange county. Its been a favorite of our family's for years and never disappoints."

  • "A splendid experience as always. The one nit I might pick is the front desk. Although, extremely well organized and technically effective; I think we may have sacrificed personality for efficiency. All around, we were well treated especially as our arrival was delayed by traffic; the food was perfect and the wait service delightful and well informed."

  • "We love Five Crowns. When I am longing for prime rib roast and the great sides, that is where we go."

  • "This is a great place to celebrate a family party of any kind. The service was great, the food was outstanding and the celebration was fun. Everyone had a good time and loved their meal. We ate and laughed and promised to come back to capture the fun."

  • "Five Crowns is always reliable and good. I prefer the older section to the newer, brighter section."

  • "We have enjoyed Five Crowns every Christmas with our family for years. This year was our 49th Anniversary and we both decided there was no better place to celebrate that at this beautiful restaurant. Our 12 years old grandson joined us and he loved it, also. Thank you for never changing in anyway."

  • "The atmosphere was nice but the prime rib was a major disappointment. It tasted old to the point of borderline spoiled, lacked a beefy taste, was mushy, and not very tender. The mashed potato was bland and no baked potato was served. The busboy was good but the waiter was disengaged. He didn't bring out the wine glasses and we had to remind him to serve bread. His remembering to bring a birthday desert for my mother saved the service from getting a one-star rating. On positive note, the hangar steak was excellent and the French onion soup and bread (notably the squaw bread) were quite good. For a restaurant long known for its prime rib, what they served was not good. Until they improve the prime rib, I cannot recommend this restaurant."

  • "Great food and great service. Overall great dining experience, but bring your appetite because the portions are plentiful!"

  • "Overall, for the price I was disappointed with the food. I ordered the filet which was a bit chewy as well as the mushrooms. My son had the chicken and the breast was very dry. The artichoke appetizer had more breading than artichoke and was very greasy."

  • "We were very disappointed about dress code. Some people wear shorts, jeans and flip-flop shoes. The restaurant should be formal attire."

  • "Food and service is good but it is a little pricy."

  • "On the positive. Service was fantastic, server and busser were both great. Sat outside which was nice. However, the food was not great. Not at all. Had wanted to visit here for years and we had family in town tonight so we thought this was a great chance to show them a legend close by. I am embarrassed we did. Steaks were tough and overall the food just was not up to par. Maybe being a holiday weekend they had the B team in the kitchen. Not sure, but not likely to return."

  • "Party of four. All salads, entrees, and sides were up to Five Crown's high level of excellence. Service was great. We'll be back!"

  • "Very disappointing for a Lawry's restaurant, prime rib was bland and chewy, service lacking, but on the bright side location was nice"

  • "Let me start by saying I though my meal was very good. The heirloom tomatoes were fantastic and the prime rib was juicy, tender and perfectly cooked. The chocolate souffle was also very tasty. They had a very nice wine list although we had brought our own to drink. My only complaint would be that 2 of our 6 guests didn't feel well the next day. They were the only two who ordered and ate the creamed corn. Although I had 2 bites of it, and found it to be good but very sweet (hard to believe creamed corn can be that sweet without adding sugar), I had no problems the next day. Being from Chicago and missing Lawry's Restaurant, I missed the iconic salad Lawry's used to serve but the prime rib was definitely one of the best."

  • "Excellent service. Food delicious ( grilled peaches and burratta salad a standout, heirloom tomato salad, prime ribs, and salmon). Bread brought to the table was also excellent."

  • "This was our first time dining and we loved it. For someone with food sensitivities, there could be a bit more freedom in the menu. Beyond this, everything was exceptional and both my wife and I had prime rib, which was delightful. Thank you!"

  • "My husband and I had a really delicious meal at Five Crowns the other night to celebrate a big work promotion for him. Our server, Paula, was wonderful and we felt very attended to by the additional assistant waitstaff and bussers. Our first courses were both really good, and my husband loved his main course of steak and sides. I thought my main course, the risotto, was good, but not fabulous. We ordered espresso and fruit cobbler for dessert that was outstanding and were given a complimentary strawberry trifle while we waited for dessert that was also really delicious. Will definitely be back!"

  • "The food and service were great. Only thing I would change is the music. Not very romantic like the rest of the Resturant. Cream of mushroom is a keeper."

  • "Food and service were excellent. Our waitress was an expert on gastronomy, giving details of ingredients and preparation I found fascinating. The horseradish cream (?) was spectacular. Would like to try the carrot cake, but it was not on the menu lthat night."

  • "The creamed corn, creamed spinach, and chocolate souffle are still excellent, but many changes in menu, decor, and service style have moved the restaurant out of the special occasion bracket and into the dinner house class. Only the "famous" prime rib remains, but without the presentation found at the Lawrys's in L. A. The English manor house furnishings have moved out along with the special menu creations and the wine steward. All servers are trained in assisting with wine sellections. Really? Just another symptom of the move into the average dinner house class. No wonder men wear shorts and open collar shirts to dinner here and many patrons no longer dress for dinner."

  • "have dined here many times over the years....but it's been a year since our last visit...subtle changes in presentation...prefer the former style of horseradish offered by server, creamed corn and spinach in separate bowls...saw some patrons in shorts! on a Saturday nite! we all ordered prime rib, different cuts...my husbands was very dry... however, the service was wonderful as usual....efficient , friendly without being invasive...and thank goodness those horrible wench costumes are history!!"

  • "The prime rib and the creamed corn were the very best I have ever had. The outdoor covered patio with candles was magical and our server Omar made us feel like crowned royalty. I highly recommend for a perfect evening."

  • "Great salad; mushroom soup is to die for. The prime rib was very good, though I could do without the bone. Our service was first rate, attentive, even staying up with my water sippage, which could be termed high. I want the recipe or the dark dinner rolls!"

  • "This was my second dining (dinner) experience at Five Crowns. In our party were guests from Japan. Their prime rib entrees were excellent as was the mushroom soup. Our server, Phil, was attentive and friendly."

  • "Of all the Lawry's restaurants we have dinned at, the Five Crowns Restaurant remains a perennial favorite of ours. The old English inn motif is charming and romantic. We love the ambience of fireside dining or the airy greenhouse room and have celebrated many anniversaries here over the years. The traditional prime rib is always great!! There are other classic menu items such as steak, chops, etc. and the wine list is very good. The Side Door gastropub has great cocktails and on our latest visit, a DJ was setting up on the garden patio. We had the Creme Brulee for dessert..so-o-o good! After dinner, we walked down to the beach and enjoyed the sunset."

  • "We made reservation a week before for my Grandsons graduation celebration. We expected to have a inside table with the ambience that Five Crowns is noted for. We we seated out in a patio area. It really took away from the celebration. The prime rib was ok but without the ambience it was nothing special."

  • "Our daughter was in town on business and we decided to have a nice dinner out. While making the reservation, I requested "The Nixon Room" if it was available and we were quite pleased that our request was honored. We all ordered our old favorite standby, the California Cut prime rib, medium rare with two tasty sides. Our waitress asked if we would like a chocolate souffle for dessert as it takes quite a while from order until table ready. We ordered the soufflé and were plesed we did. The dinner was superb and the soufflé added a nice finishing touch. It was perfect for the three of us. All in all it was a very pleasant evening for us and we're pleased we chose the 5 Crowns for our celebration."

  • "Father's Day Brunch-- Prime rib of course! Filet Mignon "steak" and poached eggs 5 stars! I'm a fan of keeping things simple and I also adore Lawery's Prime Rib for fancy fine dinners. Masculine energy from the British Pub decor. I reserved a booth to keep my 4 y.o. quiet and in her "chair." For 2 H, we enjoyed a scone, muffin, and croissant basket; salad or soup; main course; and lastly (not included "with" the brunc) berry cobbler-- warmed with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Not frou frou and overly done like so many places... Just great CONSISTENT food. Order kiddo meal as soon as you sit down. Excellent service without being intrusive. Walk down to Inspiration point to calorie burn after eating too much. Satiated smiles for miles."
