Five CrownsWhat a wonderful experienceWhat a wonderful experience I had at the 5 Crowns from the Valet, Hostess and the great wait staff.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMwe love five crowns for specialwe love five crowns for special occasions!! outstanding prime rib!5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways Reliably EnjoyableWe have been going to Five Crowns for almost 20 years. And every time, it is consistently very good. Our server was a certified sommelier, so she helped us pair our dishes perfectly. Looking forward to our next visit.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyable, even on Mother's Day!We were seated promptly at a round table for 6 downstairs. The food was fantastic as always. My husband and I had the traditional prime rib medium rare with creamed spinach, mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. My mom had salmon, which she said was excellent. My dad had lobster bisque (yum) & chicken that was very moist & delicious. My son had chicken fingers from the kids menu, which was breast meat breaded in a pankow type coating. Crispy & juicy. My daughter had the spiral pasta with butter and parmesan-nothing to write home about, but acceptable. We shared chocolate cake & strawberry rhubarb crumble for dessert. Both were delectable. Service was prompt & friendly. We used to go a lot more-before kids... We will definitely be back!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMLove 5 Crowns! It had been 2 yrs since we have been to 5 Crowns. I loved it all over again!
Can't wait to go back. Great service, Great food!! Quiet and Romantic.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMA traditional restaurant withA traditional restaurant with consistent good quality meals and excellent service.
Iconic establishment in the OC dining scene.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was great, service excellent.Food was great, service excellent. They treated us very well. We love to go to the Five Crowns for special occasions, and they never disappoint.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyable Finish to Newport CoastFive Crowns was recommended and were not disappointed. Excellent with attention to all details. We chose from the Tasting Menu. The Leek Soup was delicious and very subtle, the Caesar Salad with dressing on the side, was good except it had cherry tomatoes, not part of this salad, but it didn't detract from it. We both had the Prime Rib, which we requested medium but came medium well. With the au jus, it was very good and tasty. Our desserts, Creme Brulee for me, was delicious and my husband's Cheesecake was quite good, not too sweet and tasted freshly made. The wines were appropriate. Since we were staying in the Newport Coast area, this was just the right distance and the waitstaff made it very pleasant.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMALWAYS MAKES UP HAPPY!We have been dining here off and on for years and always leave happy with choosing this wonderful restaurant! There's not a better place for Prime Rib, and the service is attentive without being suffocating. Tommy, the wine steward, is their "national treasure" and everyone loves him!! We always ask to be seated in Maria's section as we enjoy her friendly, professional service. CC Brown's Hot Fudge Sundae with two spoons is THE BEST way to end the meal. Remember, calories don't count when you're eating out!!5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellentFive Crowns never disappoints. In fact they continue to add delicious food to their existing menu. Always delicious.4/29/2013 12:00:00 AMFive Crowns is a great neighborhoodFive Crowns is a great neighborhood restaurant. The staff are friendly and attentive. Food is great although pricey.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMTook advantage of the $45Took advantage of the $45 Tasting menu; the wedge was Fabulous!! The crab cake was disappointing in appearance and quantity. The chicken was GREAT, the prime rib was thin and uneven in cut. The cheesecake was below your quality and the bowl the Crème Brule was served in was way too large.
First time sitting on the patio; there were several large parties, we were a party of two. The volume of noise was overwhelming and distracting. Would suggest using the patio for LARGE groups rather than parties of two (unless specified).
Will be back; enjoyed the service and old world charm.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMLOVED ITLoved it for our wedding and still loved it for our 5 year anniversary. Never change4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food, but not a great valueService and attention were nearly perfect. Martinis were prepared quickly and tasty. We ordered dinner off the April taster menu. Crab cakes and potato leek soup entrees were delicious. Main courses had some unfortunate flaws including still-bleeding chicken and watery potatoes; however, the prime rib was excellent. The desserts--creme brûlée and cheesecake--were devine.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMHave not been to this restaurantHave not been to this restaurant in t
Years. Remodeled, great food, wine and service. Very attentive, food and wine selection good. I will be back.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMNice for a great evening mealLike the other restaurants in the Lawry's group, prime rib is a big thing here and it's very good. I mean very good. Done perfectly and served with two sides and Yorkshire Pudding. I got the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach and while the potatoes were very good the spinach was a quite heavy with bacon and that was basically all you could taste. Did I say the prime rib was great?
My girlfriend got the pork chop and it was huge and had a fantastic flavor.
They have a decent wine list, nothing huge but the wines they've chosen are very good.
The staff were all very friendly and really seemed to care you were enjoying yourself with numerous trips asking if everything was okay or if we needed anything else.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMOur waiter was fantastic. Our waiter was fantastic. We had excellent service and he knew everything about the menu. The food was delicious especially the crab cakes. We had a great evening.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulouswonderful as always. Impecable service, great food, wonderful ambiance.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMThe Good, The Bad, and the No UglyIt's nice to see that some of the "old" items are back to the way they were prior to the new chef taking over and making a lot of unnecessary changes to a wonderfully warm and coozy atmosphere.....such as the "wait staff" being more attentive individual needs with water, butter, etc., instead of having a bottle of water on the take to help one self or providing a small desert for the birthday guest instead of a cheesie birthday card. One thing that would be nice is a couple more appetizer items to choose from. Also, the wine list seems to be very nice, but a bit pricy for those of us on a limited income. It would have been nice to see a couple of wines with a more affordable price. What happened to the "house wines" of the past?4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was a lovely spotThis was a lovely spot for our two couple birthday celebration. Staff was friendly and attentive. Ambiance was very nice. Only issue was a very loud party of 10 right next to us. Fortunately they left just before the main course arrived.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a very nice time overall. We had a very nice time overall. Took advantage of the three course special dinner. Paired it with wine. Good service overall.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMFood varies from very goodFood varies from very good to excellent. Bizarre loud music at times.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was very good , wineFood was very good , wine selection was good. Service good.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMMy first time, but not myMy first time, but not my last. Everything was outstanding. Our server Shelly was warm friendly and professional. The Atlantic Lobster appetizer was beyond good. Beautiful restaurant. Side Door is good. Five Crowns is better.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMSo Historical Write a Book.I am so glad they updated their menu. Last year when I came there was only one thing on the menu I wanted. The $45 special was great. The perfect size-not too little, not too much. The price was still a little high but the ambiance was worth it. The nice server knew so much about the history of 5 CROWNS it was fun to get a few words from her. Would love to have a small booklet about the history to buy or read while we dine.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were seated in the "NixonWe were seated in the "Nixon room" which is wonderfully cozy and our waiter was great .
All four of us had steaks or prime rib and all were pleased. Excellent side dishes.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMOur Second Try at this restaurant..I love the changes since the last time we had dinner here (better music, no costumes, superb service, great food) -- this place has the best prime rib anywhere and my wife liked her pasta with mushrooms as well. The artichoke appetizer was also very good. The prices are steep so this isn't a place to frequent often, but every so often will do. The new Side Door pub on the side seems really cool and a location that we will want to get back to.4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMI HAD NOT BEEN PLEASED WITHI HAD NOT BEEN PLEASED WITH THE FOOD OR THE SERVICE FOR QUITE SOME TIME
BUT I HEARD THEY HAD A NEW CHEF AND I TRIED IT AGAIN ON FEB. 17TH FOR
MY NIECE'S BIRTHDAY AND WAS VERY WELL PLEASED AND SO I RETURNED AGAIN
ON APRIL 3RD. I FIND IT IS NOW BACK TO THE OLD STANDARD OF THE FIVE CROWNS.
I HAVE BEEN GOING THERE FOR FIFTY YEARS!!!!4/3/2013 12:00:00 AMPrime rib is always consistentlyPrime rib is always consistently tender and roasted to perfection. You can cut it with a butter knife, seriously, even when you order it rare. Their whipped horseradish is a must! Five Crowns has the best souffles on the planet so save room for it. Roasted bone marrow is a signature side dish and is served with french fried onions. I think I prefer the bone cut into cylinders versus the cross-section. A lot of it was absorbed by the white cloth napkin underneath.4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMEverything was good exceptEverything was good except the mash potatoes were sadly straight out of box.. Prime rib was done to perfection though.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMSteak with french fries??????Steak with french fries?????? High price for entry. Steak good.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyable; choose inside orEnjoyable; choose inside or the patio dining area. Attentive but not overbearing service; quality and value3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMThe best Prime Rib in OrangeThe best Prime Rib in Orange County.
Excellent service, every time I have come here3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMAs good as I remember...The Prime Rib was perfect, the Martini was perfect, the service was perfect. Great night out. I won't wait so long before returning to this classic restaurant!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was a special occasion,This was a special occasion, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMTried and TrueVery good food, good service, and quiet enough so that you can enjoy a conversation. A reliable spot to enjoy an excellent meal. We both had the prime rib which was very tasty as was the wedge salad.3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMA favorite...Been going for 8 years now and has to be one of my favorites. Great food, great service and amazing atmosphere. Worth every penny, definitely go.3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMI've been eating there forI've been eating there for over 50 years and it is always outstanding!3/27/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent service!!Our server Gregg was very helpful and attentive. Food was good, very nice ambience and clean.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMFive Crowns was great! TheFive Crowns was great! The food was wonderful, service was fantastic as well. The managers and our server made us feel very welcome and they gave us a lot of information and background on the restaurant. And for it being our first time there, they gave us a free little appetizer which was delicious. Me and my boyfriend are not of age to drink yet, but they told us they have "mocktails" which I thought was very different and cool. They have a great atmosphere there. I will definitely be back again soon!3/19/2013 12:00:00 AMFresh and DeliciousThe food was fresh and delicious. The menu changes with seasonal ingredients. I had the salmon with brussel sprouts. It was beautifully plated with some parsnip puree; a healthy and deliciously satifying entree. There was a nice choice of wines by-the-glass at very reasonable prices. Tommy helped me select a wonderful malbec. The service was wonderful; attentive without feeling rushed. I will be back.3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMmehWe both had fish, perhaps a mistake in a steak house. Both dishes were fine, but nothing special. The ambience of the setting is fine, and quiet. The service was good, but I think we were asked by four different people if everything was ok. Felt like a focus group, rather than a restaurant! These are mild complaints, but in the end it wasn't a great value.3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMHad a wonderful Dinner. WouldHad a wonderful Dinner. Would go back anytime. The food and service were excellent.3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent prime rib and braisedExcellent prime rib and braised ribs. Yorkshire pudding was only so-so. Service was very friendly and helpful.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMI was expecting a little moreI was expecting a little more quiet and romantic ambiance so that was the only disappointing thing. However, the food was really good and the service was outstanding so it was well worth the visit.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMMy wife and I went to FiveMy wife and I went to Five Crown to calibrate our anniversary. Food and Service was excellent. I only gave a four star rating out of five because where we were seated was a little too close for comfort to the table text to us. My wife and I didn't feel that we could have an open conversation. They were seated so close to us that not only could I hear their intire conversation, If I wanted to I could have reached over and taped the person seated next to me on the shoulder. It just wasn't the quaint romantic experiace we were expecting. If going there again, I would asked them not to seat me at the two person tabled in the center of the dinning room.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMnow serving grass-fed beef - yum!Always a favourite, we were delighted to hear the chef is now serving grass-fed beef, both their steaks and signature prime rib. This turns our favourite indulgence into a healthy, delightful dining (just what the doctor ordered!)
We both had prime rib, and it was delicious! So happily surprised about it being grass-fed, yummy. Thank you Chef!3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGive your review a title (optional)As usual, Five Crowns was exceptionally good. Took my son for his 50th birthday, a dubious celebration. Neither of us eat great amounts but we started with soups which were scrumptious then went on to California cut prime ribs. Waitress Erica was perfect and the only snag was that two of my debit cards wouldn't go through because I had inadvertently locked them with the wrong pin numbers. Cash was given and all in all it was a pleasant dinner. Five Crowns is one of our favorite places to go. Wish they had more shell fish offerings. I would go more often!3/11/2013 12:00:00 AMI think the restaurant isI think the restaurant is losing their traditional image. I remembered the food is much better before, I'm a little disappointed this time.3/10/2013 12:00:00 AMRestaurant Week visitEnjoyed dinner for two during OC restaurant week, but didn't end up ordering from the special menu. The prime rib is their specialty, so went for that and also the short rib. Tried the charcuterie plate and signature salad to start. Both were good. Service was also good, but Saturday night wedding in the adjacent event space was loud. Avoid the patio tables on weekends if you are looking for a quiet, romantic ambiance...3/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
