Diner Reviews
  • "We were disappointed in the taste of the food. It was definitely fresh ingredients, but it had no flavor. We were really surprised after reading other reviews on Open Table."

  • "We were given a gift certificate for Five and went for dinner on a Saturday. We were pleasantly surprised at what a unique dinning experience we enjoyed. The food is so unique and delicious. We did the 4 course dinner and every course was fabulous. The portions were just the right size to enjoy. I have recommended Five to several friends already . We will definitely go back"

  • "Limited menu but still good choices. The four course meal had nice selections and not overwhelming to choose. So many restaurants are too loud to have a conversation, this was perfect!"

  • "My girlfriend and I were pleasantly surprised when we dined at Five Bistro. The food was amazing, as was the service. The restaurant was clean and elegant. A great overall dining experience."

  • "This was quite possibly the best restaurant experience of my life. Every dish was fantastic, the service was impeccable, and the creativity was outstanding. We chose the Prix Fixe option which included choice of one appetizer, one soup or salad, one entree, and dessert. I am very glad we ordered that way. Note: I say it was quiet there but realize that we went for a very early dinner and there were very few other customers at the time we dined. The interior was beautiful. All around - we loved it! Dinner for four was not inexpensive, however, for the quality, variety, innovation and service, the price was completely in line."

  • "I didn't find the meal to be a good value. I expected to really enjoy the food, and found it to be good. The sorbet was the only dish in our prix fixe that I really enjoyed. We were seated near the bar and were subjected to a very loud talker. It diminshed our dining experience."

  • "We had a great celebration for my birthday last Saturday. The menu is limited so you need to be somewhat versatile. The charcuterie platter was amazing - apparently the chef smokes and cures all of his own meats. Fantastic. Portions were small, which I like so I don't stuff myself to the gills. My husband likes plain food so he had a hard time with the menu - we did get them to make us all ceasar salads which helped him out and was delicious. I had the short ribs which were cooked to perfection. And for desert some fabulous chocolate delight. Highly recommend it."

  • "I like that they utalize local fresh sources for 95% of their dishes"

  • "Waitress must have been new and wasn't too good at explaining the dishes as some of the others that we overheard..."
    Dined on 3/21/2014
  • "Food was just excellent as always.... But be sure and check your tab as this is the second time the staff Overcharged...."

  • "This was my 2nd time to dine at Five and it was just as wonderful as the first time. I am from out of town and chose to visit Five again, it was so memorable. The bourbon cocktail on the menu was perfect! And the food is seriously, fantastic. I'm a flt attendant and dine all over the country and FIve Bistro is one of my favorite places. Alicia was our server and she was absolutely terrific in explaining the menu to my elderly father. 5 star service and food!"

  • "All of my expectations were exceeded; I ordered two of their specials (which I never do) and both were fantastic. Our appetizer and desserts were excellent as well, portions were appropriately sized, and our waitress was patient and helpful!"
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "We love going to five. 4 course menu with the wine pairings is the way to go- gives you the most options to try the most menu items."

  • "Food was delicious. I'd heard about small portions before eating here, but really not an issue. I had seared tuna and many at the table had the seafood special. Began the meal with their Charcuterie plate, which was delicious. Service was the only issue. Two at our table had to wait inordinately, one for a glass of wine and one for their entre. Surely will return."

  • "Poor service. 15 min wait for server, poor knowledge of cocktail/wine list, had to ask for fundamentals (bread, water refills), modest knowledge of menu items. Despite 800 pm reservation, restaurant was 1/2 empty & diners were all finishing up half way through our meal which actually lead to less staff attention rather than more. Food: Two "specials" were gone by the time we ordered them (including a Caesar salad?). Very hit and miss within the 5-course tasting menu. Two amuse bouche were the best items. Squash soup was average. Potentially great risotto with saffron and herb butter completely overwhelmed by black pepper. Excellent tuna/egg/bacon/cheese salad. Braised rib very good. Dessert A+. Lots better for less $$$ in town."

  • "This place is by far our favorite restaurant in St. Louis. Great food that changes daily. Wonderful owners that treat you like family."

  • "We have been to Five Bistro three or four times now, and the food is always outstanding. I'm always surprised more people haven't heard of this restaurant, although I enjoy that we can usually get a reservation when we want to. I highly recommend the tasting menu, which allows you to try four or five dishes (appetizer, salad, 1-2 entrees, dessert). The portions are small, but the food is rich so you leave feeling satisfied but not overly full. They also offer wine pairings with the menu, and they do a nice job complementing the food. The service and ambience are also nice. We will definitely be back to Five Bistro!"

  • "The food had great presentation, but for the cost, they were very small proportions (especially for the men in our party). There was very limited parking. The staff was very attentive without being intrusive. I am glad we tried it,and the food tasted great, but my husband and I said for the cost we would probably go somewhere else."

  • "Five Bistro was recommended by a friend of mine. The food is made from local, fresh produce, which is always a plus. We had the five course meal for Valentine's. Each of the dishes was expertly made, and each bite was a burst of flavor. We had anything from handmade ravioli dipped in butter to a salad with a deviled egg, sugary toasted pecans, and pickled radishes, to a beef bourgoinese that fell apart in your mouth. Also, for those of you who don't drink, the bartender makes great mocktinis. The ambience is great, and it has a very romantic atmosphere. The service is terrific. That said, you may not want to be starving when you go here, the portion sizes are miniscule. But this is a perfect place for foodies for a special occasion!"

  • "We went for valentines day so we had a fixed menu which I am not a fan of but it was excellent. Portions were small so it was almost like small plates. Small plates = small portions = leave hungry! Looking forward to going back when I can try the full menu. Service was excellent. Will definitely return."

  • "The restaurant was very attactive. Unfortunately, we were seated at a small table while the nearly empty restaurant had many unused larger tables on this Thursday at 7pm. The extremely limited menu was a surprise considering the overall price point. There were four entrees: a fish, a pork, a beef, a chicken. The stuffed chicken dish was quite good and beautifully plated. The short rib was presented with a thick layer of unappetitizing fat. Our waitress did not inform us of the one off-menu item, and we found we were needing to look for her when we need of her assistance. Overall, she was very nice but not knowledgeable. I expect more when a dinner and wine for two is around $150."

  • "We had a fine time at this restaurant. The food is very high quality, yet not self-conscious and not "foodie" which I regard as a perverse use of food. The service was excellent. But we were getting ready to leave, and would have been gone in 5 minutes when the owner said he "needed" the table. We had been there almost 3 hours. and had tipped 20% but felt this was an unsavory ending to an otherwise lovely evening. It is not cool to ask your guests to leave before they are ready."

  • "Outstanding meal. Always a relaxing evening with great service and wonderful creative food. Looking forward to our next visit."

  • "The 4 course prix fixe menu is a bargain! I constructed mine with trout cake with a lovely balsamic drizzle, velvet mushroom purée soup, seared scallops served with gnocchi, roasted squash & mushrooms, finishing with a vanilla tasting of pound cake, creme brûlée & sugar cookies. The entire menu is yours to construct your prix fixe, week nights. On Fri & Sat eve there is a set 5 course tasting menu. Entire ala cart menu is always available as well. Food was delicious & well presented. Lovely wine list, very comfortable venue."

  • "The food had great flavor, but I left hungry because the portion size was so small! Wouldn't have expected to be starving after a $200+ bill. Disappointed."

  • "This was our fourth dining experience at Five. As with our earlier visits, the food was outstanding. We had 5 people in our group and we all were extremely happy with our meals and the experience."

  • "It was my first time at Five Bistro and I was so sad to know that I had not been there sooner! The whole experience from location to food to service was excellent! I love the restaurants use of local organic ingredients. This is a place to go on a girls night out, to a romantic date night, or just for night out with excellent food and wine."

  • "Food was incredible. Finally a noise-less restaurant! Small portions but many courses and lots of different things to taste. The only thing that I would add is seat cushions. For a leisure two hour meal, a wood seat is too hard. That said, it hardly felt like two hours thanks to the interesting decor, friendly and approachable waitress, and outstanding quiet atmosphere. Most def a favorite. Menu changes every day! Can't wait to go back."

  • "Five Bistro is my favorite restaurant in St. Louis. The food is creative and delicious -- consistently. The portions are perfect and much attention is given to each dish. The food is locally sourced as much as possible. They are very friendly, as well, with a personal approach to ensure the diner's comort. We always have a wonderful dining experience at Five."

  • "Last summer my wife and I ventured on The Hill Wine Walk. We noticed a restaurant, 5 Bistro, that looked interesting but honestly, I forgot about it. This weekend, while looking for a new place to try, I remembered it. I won't forget it again. A gracious host showed us to our table. Our waiter was prompt to our table to greet us. We had before dinner drinks, both of which were excellent. Our waiter told us about the chef's specials and four course tasting menu, which is what we selected. The food, from appetizer to dessert, was outstanding. 5 Bistro was beautifully appointed for the holidays and was a very comfortable place to have a relaxing dinner with conversation. It is conveniently located in The Hill area of St. Louis."

  • "I love it, you see the menu just printed with the great selections, then the waiter tell you things that are off the menu. One needs longer time to make a choice. But no choice is bad, the all are wonderful. The goose, out of this world good. The tagliatelle, I didn't not speak to anyone while I was eating, it was such a tasting experience, that is a must to have for dinner"

  • "We keep forgetting Five! They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and their staff is attentive and extremely knowledgable about the day's offerings. Choose carefully because the Chef does some remarkable things with all proteins, especially pork. To paraphrase an oft used lyric, " he uses everything but the squeal"!"

  • "We had such a lovely experience. It was a quiet Thursday evening and that meant we could eat from their spevisl $25 price fixe menu. Every bite was incredible. My husband had the $45 meal and they offered him several off menu items. He raved about the meal. And the service? Absolutely perfect. James was knowledgeable and helpful and the most gracious of servers. A fantastic experience."

  • "Five Bistro was fantastic! We had the four-course tasting menu with wine pairings. We were introduced to a Macedonian wine that was so good we bought two bottles to take home (yes, they retail some of their wines!). We also learned all about Madiera and enjoyed that as well. We plan to go back soon and hopefully try one of their wine dinners."
