Diner Reviews
  • "Look no further - the chef is innovative and manages to respect the individual ingredients while still elevating them as part of complex dishes. This is the best restaurant in Saint Louis."

  • "Went for my parent's wedding anniversary and had the best dinner. From the knowledgeable wait staff to the innovative cocktails and, of course, the extremely talented chef... it was a night to remember. Absolutely loved this restaurant and can't wait to go back!"

  • "I've thought about this for a bit before reviewing and both my dining partner and I walked away with the same experience. We are both huge foodies and have been fortunate enough to have dined in some of the best restaurants across the globe. The meal we had at Five was in the top 10 meals of our lives. We cannot understand why there isn't a line around the block to get into this place! Hands down a better French bistro than anything going in Manhattan at the moment, and we are frequent visitors there."

  • "Five Bistro is easily one of the best restaurants in the St. Louis area, perhaps even the Midwest. The food is fresh, clever and extremely well prepared. Five stays away from the often-found St. Louis theme of "more is better" and focuses on quality. The service is great from seating to service to farewell. Clearly a culinary gem."

  • "This is a true gem. This small farm-to-table find in the Hill will knock your socks off. Get the four course tasting menu. The gnocchi was lighter than air, and the flavors were absolutely perfect. The parsnip soup was silky and divine. The scallops seared perfectly. And the pannacotta is actually worth the entire trip. Jacob, our server, was warm, attentive, and knowledgable. This is a memorable experience for sure. One critique would be that they need music on the patio... But my iPod worked just fine. Go to Five Bistro!"

  • "Each of the four courses was creative well thought out and DELICIOUS! Great service and all together wonderful evening."

  • "It's easy to see that the chef and his family love their restaurant and have a passion for sharing it with others"
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "Very interesting and always fresh menu makes this place well worthy of multiple visits. We had the full 4 courses; some of it was okay, but frankly everything was bold enough that a little miss is part of the adventure. But warn you many places would strive to serve this place's 'misses'. The lamb this evening was out of the world though and the smoked trout appetizer was amazing. We'll definitely try to visit again when in town."

  • "Food was great. a little expensive- $29 for 2 scallops"

  • "Awesome food, farm to table. Always fresh, small portions, full flavor!"
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • "This special meal is definitely worth the $50.00 it costs. I only wish the portions were bigger so I could enjoy more of the delicious flavors."

  • "My second fabulous meal at Five this month. I dined with 7 different people over the two occasions and everyone had a great meal. Fabulous service."

  • "We're never disappointed with the menu at Five, and it's different every time we go. Love the decor, cozy atmosphere, personable service, nice bar; adventurous, delicious food. "

  • "Earthy notes, meatlovers enjoy, different produce, excellent presentations and enjoyable cocktails"
    Dined on 5/27/2014
  • "The food was average, with so many restaurants in the same price level, and type of cuisine, we would just go to another similar restaurant where we liked the food better."
    Dined on 5/24/2014
  • "Five Bistro is a cozy little spot. It features locally grown products. Overall the food was good not great. Many of the entrees seemed a bit on the salty side. Service was inconsistent, at times impressively friendly and at other times we felt forgotten."
    Dined on 5/14/2014
  • "I just tried Five for the first time and the food AND service AND cocktails were exceptional. I cannot wait to go back and try more courses. We made a meal of just the appetizers, ordering 2 orders of the risotto! EVERYTHING is local...like backyard local! Something for everyone on the cocktail list and lengthy wine list. "

  • "Everything from the food, to the wine, to the ambiance was perfect for our 5th anniversary. You can tell everything is made with thought, and love. Great special occasion restaurant!"

  • "Delightful evening, enjoyed exquisite cusine. In my opinion, price of.menu items makes this a "special occasion" dining experience."

  • "I hosted a work dinner at Five with an out-of-town guest and everyone was impressed. The service was exceptional and I say this as an east-coaster who regularly complains about mediocre service in St. Louis. For example, servers kept coming to check if our guest needed more hot water for her tea, which as a tea drinker I find is frequently overlooked. All of our dishes were timed perfectly too. The food is great: beautiful presentation and flavors to match. Very reasonable prices for fine dining in this market, especially considering their focus on local ingredient procurement. I always appreciate it when there is an $8 glass of red wine on the menu! Our only complaint was that it was a little loud at times and this was on a weekday. "

  • "The restaurant had only 3 seafood entrees on Good Friday, one of which ran out. Overall, restaurant was a disappointment. We have enjoyed Five bistro in the past. "

  • "We were disappointed in the taste of the food. It was definitely fresh ingredients, but it had no flavor. We were really surprised after reading other reviews on Open Table."

  • "We were given a gift certificate for Five and went for dinner on a Saturday. We were pleasantly surprised at what a unique dinning experience we enjoyed. The food is so unique and delicious. We did the 4 course dinner and every course was fabulous. The portions were just the right size to enjoy. I have recommended Five to several friends already . We will definitely go back"

  • "Limited menu but still good choices. The four course meal had nice selections and not overwhelming to choose. So many restaurants are too loud to have a conversation, this was perfect!"

  • "My girlfriend and I were pleasantly surprised when we dined at Five Bistro. The food was amazing, as was the service. The restaurant was clean and elegant. A great overall dining experience."

  • "This was quite possibly the best restaurant experience of my life. Every dish was fantastic, the service was impeccable, and the creativity was outstanding. We chose the Prix Fixe option which included choice of one appetizer, one soup or salad, one entree, and dessert. I am very glad we ordered that way. Note: I say it was quiet there but realize that we went for a very early dinner and there were very few other customers at the time we dined. The interior was beautiful. All around - we loved it! Dinner for four was not inexpensive, however, for the quality, variety, innovation and service, the price was completely in line."
    Dined on 3/26/2014
  • "I didn't find the meal to be a good value. I expected to really enjoy the food, and found it to be good. The sorbet was the only dish in our prix fixe that I really enjoyed. We were seated near the bar and were subjected to a very loud talker. It diminshed our dining experience."

  • "We had a great celebration for my birthday last Saturday. The menu is limited so you need to be somewhat versatile. The charcuterie platter was amazing - apparently the chef smokes and cures all of his own meats. Fantastic. Portions were small, which I like so I don't stuff myself to the gills. My husband likes plain food so he had a hard time with the menu - we did get them to make us all ceasar salads which helped him out and was delicious. I had the short ribs which were cooked to perfection. And for desert some fabulous chocolate delight. Highly recommend it."

  • "Food was just excellent as always.... But be sure and check your tab as this is the second time the staff Overcharged...."

  • "This was my 2nd time to dine at Five and it was just as wonderful as the first time. I am from out of town and chose to visit Five again, it was so memorable. The bourbon cocktail on the menu was perfect! And the food is seriously, fantastic. I'm a flt attendant and dine all over the country and FIve Bistro is one of my favorite places. Alicia was our server and she was absolutely terrific in explaining the menu to my elderly father. 5 star service and food!"

  • "All of my expectations were exceeded; I ordered two of their specials (which I never do) and both were fantastic. Our appetizer and desserts were excellent as well, portions were appropriately sized, and our waitress was patient and helpful!"
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "We love going to five. 4 course menu with the wine pairings is the way to go- gives you the most options to try the most menu items."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "Food was delicious. I'd heard about small portions before eating here, but really not an issue. I had seared tuna and many at the table had the seafood special. Began the meal with their Charcuterie plate, which was delicious. Service was the only issue. Two at our table had to wait inordinately, one for a glass of wine and one for their entre. Surely will return."

  • "Poor service. 15 min wait for server, poor knowledge of cocktail/wine list, had to ask for fundamentals (bread, water refills), modest knowledge of menu items. Despite 800 pm reservation, restaurant was 1/2 empty & diners were all finishing up half way through our meal which actually lead to less staff attention rather than more. Food: Two "specials" were gone by the time we ordered them (including a Caesar salad?). Very hit and miss within the 5-course tasting menu. Two amuse bouche were the best items. Squash soup was average. Potentially great risotto with saffron and herb butter completely overwhelmed by black pepper. Excellent tuna/egg/bacon/cheese salad. Braised rib very good. Dessert A+. Lots better for less $$$ in town."
