  • "Overall a good dinner. I will go back. We had the best waiter ever. Wish I could remember his name. It is beautiful. There are some convenient places to park. It is a little confusing because when we walked in we saw a bar, but did not see the name Five anywhere so we thought we were in the wrong place. "

  • "Had a lovely diiner at Five celebrating a birthday. A beautifully remodeled space inside the restored old Shattuck Hotel. The dining room is a bright wide open space tall ceilings and 8 huge architectural windows street side making it a bright cheery space. We had halibut and another had pork cheeks with bacon polenta. Both were delicious with intetesting veggies and sauces that blended flavors subtly but fantastically. I like the focus on veggies and there were several vegetarian menu choices. We split lava cake for dessert that came with a birthday candle. A fine meal and special evening."

  • "As guests at the Shattuck Plaza Hotel, we had enjoyed brunch at FIVE several time in the past. This time, however, we were very disappointed. It took more than 30 minutes to be served -- for an omelet and ham & eggs! The food was mediocre at best, and cold as well. Coffee refills were slow in coming, too. It seemed that the kitchen was only going through the motions. Someone needs to pay a lot more attention and put a little care into what they're doing."

  • "I was looking for someplace nice for my boyfriend and I too eat before the show; Five had an open reservation, their website looked great and stated that they were award winning. I guess they're not as good as they had been because the food was not very good, the service was not good (we ended up opting to sit at the bar which is full service), and the cocktails were not well made (starting with the cheap quality of the spirits they used). It was a big disappointment, but luckily the show was good as was the place we went after since we hadn't eaten much at Five. I will say the butternut squash soup was pretty tasty."

  • "Food was very good, as were signature cocktails. Great for quick pre-theater bite to eat. I recommend the shrimp starter and the biscuits. I also had a mixed green salad that was not listed on the menu that was quite tasty, though the candied walnuts were more like clumps of sugar than they were sweetened nuts. We had time constraints and our service was both accommodating and impeccable. Would return again for a less hurried meal, as the entrees that were being served to patrons around us looked fantastic!"

  • "Overpriced Food: One steak sandwich with caramelized onion = pretty good. The steak was very thin. Tasty with the onion. It came with small, roasted potatoes that were oily and honestly, not that great. The other dish a the table was a big mistake. Turkey club sandwich. I've had better at lesser restaurants. The turkey was thinly sliced and tasted just a slight cut above lunch meat. A great club should be "carved" turkey from a roasted bird. At the price they charged it should have been… but was not. The fries that came with it were run of the mill, nothing special. Service: We were one of two tables seated. After we ordered, 3 tables were seated. They all received their food before us. I would not return and I would not recommend."

  • "The dining room here is great! The tables are well spaced out, and even though it was full it never got very loud which allowed for nice dinner conversation. The service was friendly and prompt, and the food was delicious. We loved the crispy rolls with julienne vegetables, and the duck breast we ordered was perfectly cooked, although the potato puffs that came with it left a lot to be desired and were very mushy. We also had the pureed parsnip soup, which wasn't really a hit with any one at the table, but the buttermilk chive biscuits ended up being a favorite. I would definitely recommend this place, and will be back myself to try other dishes."

  • "Three of us really enjoyed our meals. It is walking distance from the movie theater. I loved my scallops and root veggies. The guys enjoyed the ravioli and gnocchi with boar (I loved it too). Dessert was a great combo of kiwi, chocolate and sorbet. I am not a big drinker and asked for 1/2 glass of wine which was accommodated and delicious."

  • "Four of us went to brunch at Five. Food was ok. Nothing that I would ever want to order again. Waiter messed up part of the order so one member of the party had to sit without food while the rest of us had ours for what felt like a long time. Then the kitchen seemed to forget our dessert order. Both items were premade, cold dishes that should not have taken much time. Took 20 minutes and waiter did not seem to be aware that we had been waiting so long. Did not check on them until we asked. Waiter had a very obsequious manner which was quite annoying. His smile felt like he turned it on for the moment and was quite insincere. I felt he disliked us as much as we were disappointed by his service."

  • "This was our second visit to Five. Both my husband and I were happy that we had decided to try the restaurant again after a very bad initial experience. We were pleasantly surprised and came away with a much higher opinion of both the food and the service. In fact, we were impressed by the quality of my appetizer, prawns in a coconut foam with mangos, and my entre, scallops with pasta and vegetables in a rich sauce. My husband found his steak very flavorful but not as tender as one would wish; he also prefers his green beans cooked a bit more. The highlight for him was the potato and ham croquette, which truly was excellent! We finished our meal with the lava chocolate cake, which was delicious but had no lava at all; it was baked solid."

  • "One of the things that I love about dining at Five is the lovely wait staff--they are incredibly friendly and welcoming! The food is delicious. The chef really knows how to cook a steak, a rare skill in Berkeley restaurants; every steak I have had has been cooked to perfection. The gnocchi is amazing--made on site in the morning and cooked to perfection for lunch. They melt in your mouth!"

  • "The management team was very accommodating and ensured that our reservations were treated carefully as we had a CalBerk performance to attend and get out us out on time. The bar menu was far more interesting and tasty that the restaurant menu and even though we were told we couldn't order appetizers from that menu the manager allowed us to do so. All entrees were good but the endive salad was a true bust and should be avoided."

  • "A disaster, especially compared to previous good experiences at Five. The drinks were awful: the barman didn't seem to know how to make a mojito, even given two tries to get it right. The food was nearly inedible: tasteless monkfish stuffed with plugs of what was supposed to be chorizo, but was more likely chunks of tire tread; duck breast served so underdone that it might still have been breathing, despite the patron's explicit and emphatic request that it be well-cooked. Perhaps the chef was off that evening and the dishwasher did the cooking. Gluttons we might even be, but not for that sort of punishment. We won't take Five again."

The "furniture" treatment combined with slow and unresponsive service to make our first 45 minutes an incredibly unpleasant experience. I recommend avoiding this place."

  • "Everything was nice, but the food really wasn't up to the quality I expect for the price. The julienne veggie rolls were rather mushy and the quinoa salad underneath was entirely forgettable. The best thing in that dish was the fried kale (and there wasn't much of that). My husband said the duck was OK, but not that great. The best part of the meal was the biscuits we had for appetizer, they were wonderful. The space is lovely, and the service was good (our waiter in particular), but twice they brought the wrong thing to our table (it was Valentine's Day & one of the wait staff explained that for special event meals they use a different numbering system for the tables). We ordered off the regular menu; the V-Day menu did not appeal."

  • "Interesting menu exceedlingly well prepared. Buttermilk chive biscuits to die for. We had excellent monkfish creatively prepared, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented as well as gnocchi with wild boar ragout that was absolutely excellent. Homemade dessert specialty butterscotch pudding provided an excellent ending to a great meal. Restaurant is an integral part of an elegant lobby of a fine hotel in downtown Berkeley close to everything a visitor would want to take advantage of. We will be back!"
