  • "What a magnificent evening! We just celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary with a romantic dinner here. The food, service, and ambiance were all impeccable. We started with the fresh buttermilk chive biscuits with honey butter and pimento cheese. The grilled peaches and sun-dried watermelon salad was sensational, but was surpassed (if that is possible) by the main course: scallops and calamari over risotto. The service was perfect. The next course would arrive just about the time when we were ready to move on to the evening's next culinary delight. Kudos to chef Stephane Tonnelier on what he has done at Five. It's a bright star in the firmament of Berkeley restaurants."

  • "FIVE has always been one of our favorite restaurants in downtown Berkeley, so we were surprised by our most experience. Our first courses of a salad with figs and flat bread, and a cauliflower and potato soup were excellent. However, the halibut main course that 2 of us at the table had was terrible- it was so over-cooked and dry that it could not be easily cut with a fork. Also, it was barely warm. We complained to our server, but we really should have sent it back to the kitchen or asked that it be removed from our bill. Restaurants can have off nights and make mistakes, but this was a serious lapse by the chef. We hope that this was a one-time fluke because FIVE has been so good in our past visits."

  • "I wanted to come here for the burrata and was disappointed to find out it was no longer on the menu (although Open Table still has it listed). So we ordered the gruyere puffs off the bar menu instead. Wonderful, light little gems. I'm vegetarian and they accommodated my request for the gnocchi with a veg sauce instead of the wild boar. So happy I asked for the accommodation! I'm still dreaming of these puffs of heaven. Pan seared but still light and fluffy. The sauce that accompanied it was delicate and amazing. My husband was also pleased with his scallop dish. We had a 6:15 reservation on a Friday night and were seated right away. By 6:30 we had ordered drinks, apps and food. Overall great experience. I'm definitely coming back!"

  • "Sunday brunch before the movies and it was a jewel of a place to experience the old hotel now renovated. My mother use to shop at Hink's department store that was on the ground floor back in the 60s. I had crab sandwich & a glass of the brut."

  • "Perfect spot to dine before attending B. Rep or Aurora Theatres. You are always asked if you will be attending a show. Service was fairly attentive and smooth. Noise level was not so obtrusive that you had to strain to hear your table mates. Food nicely served and tasty. Prices a bit on the higher side for some items. Cricket"

  • "We've dined here often and have never had BAD service until now. Our waiter was totally inattentive. It seemed that the dining room, less than half full, had scarcely enough help to manage. I hope our next lunch here with be covered with more help on the dining floor."

  • "We were there on a Sunday late afternoon, so the place was mostly empty. We had a nice table, the space is beautiful with a lot of marble (it is the restaurant for a hotel). The food was good and plentiful. I had gnocchi with wild boar ragu (delicious), others had pork cheeks with polenta (very good). Nice desserts and the drinks were just right."

  • "FIVE has a lovely setting and decor, and is very convenient for dining before or after Berkeley Rep..... and I really wanted it to be better. But everything--from confusion at the maitre d' stand, to slow/sporadic service, to disappointing entrees, to so-so dessert--seemed to indicate the need for better management overall. I don't think it would take much to whip this place into better shape..... just a firmer or more inspiring hand."

  • "Entress were good, appetiisers on the small side, better if you weren't charged for biscuits, and when I asked for bread, it never came, service seems a bit spotty and not trained, Napolean was good , but more stawberry short cake than Naplolean, steak was hightlight, like the space, good before theater with friends - reccommed not charging for biscuits and bread, larger salads and appetisers"

  • "Friendly staff greeted us and proceeded to be very attentive. There is not a bad table to be had. Menu is varied, and desserts looked amazing, but alas I had eaten too much to even try one. This restaurant is a great find."

  • "I really like Five! I was surprised last Friday when we arrived for our 5:30 dinner reservation to have a quick meal before an early movie in the neighborhood. The restaurant was empty (just opening) and there were no other diners in the dining room for much of our visit. I had looked at the menus on the Open Table website and had already decided to order a hamburger off the "bar bites" menu and a Pilsner off the "happy hour" menu. When our bill arrived, we were charged full price for the beer and told that the "happy hour" drink prices apply only to drinks served in the bar. I've rechecked the "bar bites" and the "happy hour" menus on the Open Table website and this is not mentioned anywhere. :-("

  • "I am on a particular diet right now that requires that I eat mostly vegetables, a little fish, no gluten, no dairy and no nuts. I was able to order several items off the regular menu that met my criteria, and was completely satisfied and delighted with the flavor, the texture, and the presentation. It was a rare treat for me during this period of limited foods to eat such beautifully prepared foods that support both my diet and my culinary desires."

  • "After sitting at our table for more than 10 minutes without water I had to tell the host we had not been greeted at all. When our server finally came he seemed more annoyed than apologetic. My father had to ask 5 times for cream for his coffee from 2 different people! Our server was not attentive, even a bit argumentative at times like when I asked to substitute fruit for my toast. My sister's tuna melt came missing ingredients the menu advised it came with. The meager amount of potatoes on my plate left me disappointed, especially because they were the best thing on my plate. I will give credit to the ambiance and decor, the restaurant itself is quiet lovely, the service is quiet the opposite. Needless to say, I will not be returning. "

  • "This is a nice setting with very interesting, innovative food but the service is mediocre. When the restaurant called to confirm the reservation I told the person calling that we were going to the theater and that it was an early opening. She said she would note it on our reservation. I repeated the information to our server. Despite the notification, it took an hour for our entrees to be served. Our server appeared indifferent to the delay. I would only recommend this restaurant if you have no time constraints."

  • "I tried to reserve a table at six for six. OpenTable and then the restaurant said the closest I could get was 5:45 or 8:30. We went at 5:45, one couple having to come through heavy traffic from Marin to get there at 5:45, and sat in an almost empty restaurant for almost two hours. When we left for our play at Berkeley Rep, there was still plenty of room. Granted, we were sitting at one of the few tables set up for six. Perhaps had we been only four our time choices would have been greater. But we six could easily have come at 6:00 or 6:30 and been seated. I didn't and don't get it."

  • "Chef Tonnelier showed some promise in Oct 2013 but this May 2014 dinner was disappointing. Mushroom bisque was average; endive salad w/apples was unbalanced, mostly all apples with a sour dressing and overcooked egg. NY Steak w/ham croquette: why a salty ham croquette with a big salty steak anyway?? Too many ingredients on the plate lessened everything. Pork cheeks were tender but tasteless: they were served lukewarm while the lovely crispy polenta was nice and hot, and the pea puree only muddled the red wine sauce. Service was good but there were only 4 tables occupied. The flavors were muddy and uncoordinated, too unbalanced. The biscuits were great, but those are from the previous chef."

  • "Came here for Mother's day brunch and the wait was horrible. Even though I had a reservation for 12:15PM, I had to wait 40+ minutes until I was seated. Hostess did not appear to have control of the situation and many other groups had long waits for their tables even though they had reservations. What I don't understand is why the wait was so long, because there were plenty of open tables... Seems that they were understaffed which is surprising because you would expect a lot of people for mother's day. Besides the long wait, food was only OK considering how much we had to pay. I'm not sure if I would come back here again. Probably would not, after my first experience."

  • "Have been to Five 2 times prior to going again for Mother's Day Brunch. I would not go back for brunch. Had a reservation, but seemed like they were definitely overwhelmed with the amount of people they needed to accommodate. A little disorganized at the hostess area, once we were seated, the server did not come over for 10-15 minutes, not acceptable. The food at the brunch was very good though, it was the saving grace to this experience. "

  • "We ate here for the last 3 mother's day brunch buffet and liked it so it was no brained to come back but what a disappointment. As the starter, they were unorganized that after they checked us in, they forgot to seat us. We had to reminded them of our reservation again. Then, they seated us in the hallway, yes, hallway! The helper came to give us drinks but the waiter never bothered to introduced herself. The whole 45 minutes we ate there, we watched our waiter served the table next to us (only two lucky tables in the hallway, btw) and giving us dirty looks. Several times our kids got in her way as she tried to carried away the other table's dirty dish and she got annoyed. We left and vow never come back."

  • "This was the Mothers Day brunch, so I can't speak for a normal dining experience. The food at the buffet was very good, and the space was well set up with live music. They just didn't get the service quite right. When we got there at 10 for our reservation, they hadn't yet opened, and there was a long line with no signs about how to check in. After 15 minutes, we asked someone, who told us to check in at the front of the line, and they finally got us seated by 10:30. The bottomless mimosas were a bit hard to come by, and we had to hand our credit cards to someone up front because nobody came to take them. I realize it was a large event, but if you're going to add 20% automatic gratuity for a buffet, you should really nail the service."

  • "Our first visit to Five was years ago. While making the reservation, we remarked that we could not remember whether the food was good, which is usually a bad sign. We hope that the passage of time would serve us a surprise, but it was not to be. The food was only fair across the board from the salads to the entrees (duck breast, halibut, mushroom ravioli). The quality of the ingredients fell short. The seasoning was bland. The mixture of flavors showed no inspiration. In another town, such effort might be passable. But not in Berkeley, being that the competition is so fierce. There are just too many good choices."
