Fish TagFlavorful food nicely presentedI've been impressed by Chef Psilakis for years as the space on 79th St has undergone changes. Food is always immaculately cooked, seasonings spot on, I am baffled that it is not mobbed and that the kitchen closes relatively early on weekends. Superb octopus and a very fairly priced wine list were standouts; we just needed a few more people at the restuarant to give it the buzz it so rightly deserves.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMwonderful food; acoustics not greatgreat menu. all service wonderful, from maitre de' to those who cleared table. nice looking inside. Loud! Loud enough that you think about it! Other than that, really a nice spot with great fish in the neighborhood.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMOur group enjoyed an excellentOur group enjoyed an excellent evening at Fishtag. We each ordered different first courses and main dishes, and were delighted with everything we had. From a perfect swordfish and sausage dish , to exceptional mussels (with pickled fennel!), smoked octopus, prawns, a salad with smoked trout to a flavorful salad medley of bulgur wheat, dates and pomegranate, everything was inventive and delicious (there was a little less enthusiasm for the grilled bass). The unusual approach to wine pairings confused us at first. But we followed the suggestions, choosing individual glasses of a medley of wines. The recommendations complemented the dishes perfectly.
The wait-staff were also terrific. And the prices moderate.
Can't wait to go back.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious fish at delicious pricesSurprisingly good food and variety. Great value - especially in NYC. Compares to top restaurants that cost 3x as much. Yum!!!5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food is excellent butThe food is excellent but I wish they would do something about the acoustics. It is unpleasantly noisy.5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMInteresting and deliciousInteresting and delicious food at a great price. I love the unique menu arrangement. Highly recommended.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat neighbourhood spotLow key. Yummy food. Great wines. Friendly staff. The lighting is maybe a bit bright--but that's a small negative in my overall high enddorsement of this restaurant.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMCozy and yummyAn unusual menu of large and small dishes with fresh ingredients, warm but professional service, a small dining room that's festive but not noisy and a great selection of wines make this 79th Street restaurant a treat.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMWhat a great dining experience! To begin, a fun menu of cheeses, fish and charcuterie you can mix and match—beautifully presented to the table. Then onto appetizers and—if you have room—entrees. Casual, upscale ambience and capable, unobtrusive service. Thoroughly enjoyable.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMMenu is ordered from lightestMenu is ordered from lightest dishes to heaviest for all apps, salads and main dishes. What an excellent idea! Also had suggested wine for different groupings. I found this very helpful.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful Noshing dinner!Went with a friend and split kale and smoked trout salad....much more than expected..loaded with trout! Then a few appetizers also delicious and ample portions for sharing. WInes by 1/2 glass, glass and bottle plus loads of beers and all the others!
Pairings suggested on menu. And the price is right!5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMNot run-of-the millGrilled shrimp bruschetta was fab, and all the small plates we had were very good. (Didn't try the large ones.) Ambient noise level was high, but for some reason not a problem. My friend and I had no trouble having a quiet conversation together. I was looking for something different on the OES, found this place on the internet. It lived up to its good reviews.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMUnder rated.I went to Fishtag with a bunch of my friends and the first thing I noticed was that it was more intimate than I thought. But that didn't bother my friends and I. We went on to order the Smoked Octopus and we ended up ordering 2 for the table as it was that good!!! We also ordered the Sheep Milk Dumpling with crab meat and that was some creamy goodness.
All in all, everything we ordered (Octopus, Sheep Milk Dumplings, Bulgar Salad, Kale and trout salad, Branzino and Lobster Bucatini) were nothing short of delicious and scrumptious.
2 things though: 1, they could have more dessert selections instead of just the Coffee Pot Creme and Semolina Cake (this was light and oh so yummy!). Lastly, they need more action at the bar area!5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Food, Poor ServiceI was very happy to see that they no longer give you a glass of wine and and charge you for two half glasses as was reported in previous reviews. The menu is now very clear on the cost of the wine and the amount you are getting.
Now, as far as the service go, our waiter was not unpleasant but very inattentive. Maybe he had too many tables but every time we looked for him, he was no where to be found. And when he did come to the table, we felt pressured and rushed to make decisions. At the start, he came to our table 3 times and left because we couldn't make our decisions fast enough.
And now for the food. It was excellent and I would go back in a second regardless of the service just to eat this wonderful food.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMBrunch InterestFirst time for brunch (regular for dinner and the awesome bar scene) and what fun! Ricota pancackes, croque monseir with short rib and baked eggs- all yummy!5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMFishtag was fantastic. EverythingFishtag was fantastic. Everything we had was perfectly prepared and presented. To start, we had the Ceviche and the Catalan Shrimp and for or our main courses we had the Striped Bass and the Mussels. Everything was delicious. The wine was pretty extensive and well laid out. I will definitely be visting again when I am in the area.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMMy go-to neighborhood favoriteMy go-to neighborhood favorite for out-of-town guests. Smart, charming staff.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMAfter dinner, have some darkAfter dinner, have some dark chocolate ice cream! Trust me.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMA highly creative menu. AllA highly creative menu. All fish we ordered was fresh and very well prepared. We'll be back.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMHave been passing by thisHave been passing by this restaurant, in the space that once belonged to Kefi, for a while and finally out of desperation at the limited selection of restaurants on the UWS decided to give it a try. We couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised! Delicious appetizer salads, delicious main courses, service with a smile. We'll definitely be back!4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMMarvelous shrimp Catalan.Marvelous shrimp Catalan. Nice portion
And smoked Octopus..nice portion
As delicious as the Bass ceviche was ..The portion was very skimpy..and therefore not worth. $12.
Ice cream dessert was delicious.. Try the mission fig!4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMGive it a chance you will enjoy it!Great menu, great food and energetic setting. Very nice evening we enjoyed all aspects of this unique dining experience!4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMLovely!Food was great, service was great. All in all, it was a wonderful experience!3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMEXCELLENT. DELICIOUS. A CROWDEXCELLENT. DELICIOUS. A CROWD PLEASER. Every dish the tabled ordered was unanimously agreed to be delicious. I will be going back specifically for the excellent smoked octopus-- so succulent -- perfectly prepared with great subtle smokiness that in no way overwhelmed the flavor of the octopus itself. The seafood soup was also a table favorite.
The staff was very accommodating & patient in describing wines and allowing us to taste several before choosing. The option of a half glass was great for the lighter drinkers at the table who still wanted to enjoy the menu in the manner it was laid on from lighter to heavier fare with suggested accompanying wines.
The mousse & semolina cake were just the right richness to end the meal.3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMRecommend - bulgur salad,Recommend - bulgur salad, shrimp bruschetta and smoked octopus apps. For main courses, the stuffed branzino was the winner. Don't miss it. Service was lovely, but the canned rock music was a big turn-off.3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMThe smoked octopus over greensThe smoked octopus over greens and the Greek salad - unique and delicious! Cannot wait to return or go to sister restaurant3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMMushroom bruschetta was amazing.Mushroom bruschetta was amazing. Spoon salad, swordfish and rapini also great. WIll return. Just happened to find this on Open Table as I was looking for something in this neighborhood.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWay more than expectedWe dine out often and this was better than anything we have done in the past year. An inventive menu, great service and the food combined for a not to be missed experience. For the price a definite best buy!3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMVery creative menu. DeliciousVery creative menu. Delicious kale salad with smoked trout. Wonderful sheep's milk pasta with crab. Baklava (more like strudel with undercooked phyllo dough) needs work. Interesting wines by the glass.2/11/2013 12:00:00 AMThis place is pretty smallThis place is pretty small and very easy to miss. However, the food here is too good to be just passed by. My boyfriend and I shared three plates. The bulgur salad, prawn bruschetta, and grilled bass. All the dishes were amazing. The bruschetta was absolutely to die for. We looked around and everyone was having one. We wanted to have some more but we thought we might be too full. Grilled bass was also very soft and the mushroom that came with it was one of my favorites! I would definitely recommend this place.2/1/2013 12:00:00 AMHidden gemInventive menu, delicious food, attentive service. Room had a few missteps - bulbs burned out, etc. and it behooves management to make sure the environment lives up to the quality of the food. But this is a place people will walk past a hundred times before they venture in, and that makes it a wonderful place to take out of town guests.12/14/2012 12:00:00 AM
