Diner Reviews
  • "there were many things to like about fish tag: nice room, lively atmosphere, interesting menu. some of the dishes we ordered were very good, such as the chicken and the brownie sundae dessert. others, however, were not quite right. the shrimp appetizer was overcooked and the swordfish entree was bland and teeny-tiny -- it really should be described as an appetizer as well. the lentil soup, which was not described as hot and spicy, was VERY spicy, too spicy for us to eat. this is not the fault of the server, of course, but it's nice when the server offers to replace it or take it off the check. this did not happen."

  • "Came here on a Tuesday night, the place was busy, but not completely full. I sat down at the bar while waiting for my friend. The bartender made me a really nice Negroni. Ended up having a the prawn bruschette at the bar. It was really good with large pieces of prawn. For dinner I had the sheep's milk dumplings which were amazing. My friend had the swordfish which she loved. The staff was great throughout the night and gave an excellent wine pairing with our entrees. I wish I had written them down though. I'll definitely by back."

  • "Appetizers were terrific, main entrees were good but not stellar - lobster with pasta was a bit chewy, dumplings tasty but slightly heavy The night we were there, there was a very large and convivial group arranged at a very long table resulting in a high noise level and making conversation at our adjacent table a bit challenging. Atmosphere is informal. Overall, enjoyed the meal but expected a bit more.... "

  • "My husband and I were looking for casual atmosphere UWS seafood and Fish tag was perfect! Great decor and vibe. Friendly attentive service. Inventive menu and fresh delicious food! We were not rushed by the wait staff and felt well attended. This would be one of our regular spots if we lived on the west side."

  • "Fishtag presents fish and seafood with a Greek twist. Other then eating in Greece what could be a better way of eating seafood. Listing food on menu from lightest to heaviest is an interesting experience that sometimes makes you rethink what is light, but all of it is excellent. Great bar and very good service,"

  • "We took my parents here for dinner. Overall the food was good. Nice fresh take on some classics like Greek Salad and the dumplings were excellent. The menu is slim but good variety. Not as extensive in the seafood area than I would have expected."

  • "My boyfriend and I had brunch at Fishtag this weekend after reading yelp reviews about their brunch (a neighborhood secret). The location is right next to Irving Farm, my favorite coffee shop, so I had walked by but never eaten there because of the $$$. Don't let the dollar signs put you off - the brunch is a great deal with entrees $10-13. I had the ricotta pancakes (AMAZING) and my boyfriend had the smoked trout hash, which was good but couldn't compete with the pancakes. We also got the special of apple smoked bacon, which was also great. We got there at 12 when it opened, were seated promptly, and had consistently good service throughout."

  • "We just love Fish Tag. The food is so tasty, and it's not just the fish. This time we had 4 at the table, and were able to try 6 dishes. We loved them all. The dumplings (gnocci really) with crabmeat was absolutely wonderful, but we were glad we could split it 4 ways because it's incredibly rich. The stuffed fish with head cheese was great again, the appetizer of ham tasty. Service was a little slow, but the place was packed on a Sunday night and we thought maybe they could hve used another server. Wine by the bottle was a great match for the food and didn't break the bank. Portions were plentiful - 3 appetizers and 3 mains for 4 was almost too much food. Can't wait to return."

  • "The place absolutely has potential. It's a great spot, food on paper looks good and the service is quite friendly. However, there were only 4 tables there (including our own) and it took 15-25 minutes to just get drinks. The menu looks appetizing but the execution is poor. When you order poached eggs for brunch, you expect to get poached eggs, not hard-boiled eggs (especially when the eggs are the star of the dish). So had to send a dish back. Didn't have the heart to send two other dishes back because the fried egg was, again, cooked to the point it was hard boiled. Very disappointing, especially since there's tremendous potential there."

  • "We are new to the neighborhood, living a block away, and this will certainly be one of our favorite local restaurants. The ambiance was great, as was the food and service. Great place for foodies!"

  • "We were very disappointed. I've eaten at other MK restaurants and this was a let down. Service was painfully slow, the food was lack luster and even the cocktails were underwhelming. Service was slow and unattentive hardly worth the cab ride and the time it took to get there."

  • "The prawn bruschetta was amazing as was the swordfish- cooked to PERFECTION! I highly reccomend trying all of the ice creams too. I was very happy to find this place!"

  • "The bar area is long which I liked while waiting for the table to open up. The smaller dining area in the back is cozy and comfortable. Mussels - fresh, good size, flavorful and good enough for 3 people perhaps Salmon - love the crusted skin and fresh chopped veggies Lamb Burger - little overcooked but still tasty; love the large cut fries Ceviche - fresh and tasty as well; not too acidic either I did enjoy the overall stay there and will definitely return."

  • "We went to Fish Tag for our anniversary and had the most amazing time! The restaurant prepared a special tasting menu using some new items and old favorites and paired each course with a wonderful wine or special cocktail, and it was all very affordable for our celebration. Now THAT'S great service, and the food is simply fantastic. I've recommended this restaurant to so many people (even before this experience), and now I'm recommending it to OpenTable users. Try the kale and smoked trout salad, and if you're adventurous with fish and shellfish, try whatever your server recommends!"

  • "Four of us ate dinner here (Saturday 8 March). From the moment we entered the atmosphere was lively and welcoming - a nice feeling of excitement. The service was terrific (so sorry, I don't remember our server's name), and the food was amazing. That said, the noise level was deafening. I was completely hoarse after ten minutes, and could barely hear my dinner companions. When we left my hearing was actually a little foggy, like after a rock concert. I would NOT recommend this place for a romantic dinner, nor for groups, unless they know sign language! Perhaps booking a table before or after the prime dining hours is the way to go, because the food is soooo good!"

  • "In all the years we have been going to restaurant week, this is the first time we were told we all had to order off the restaurant week menu, and if one person didn't, they had to order an appetizer and dessert. What's that all about? What if you can't eat a lot of food? Food was excellent!"

  • "The food was great, we had cheese and mains. The wine was also great and I love how they give you ideas for pairings on the menu. We asked the staff to offer recommendations given what we liked / said we were looking for and they just did a round of "everything is great." That's fine, but I like when the staff are conifdent and know enough about the food / wine / cheese etc to offer some real recommendations. They were able to describe the dishes but I was looking for more decision than that. That's the only thing that was lacking - there are so many great food choices, it would have been nice to have a bit more help from the servers. Otherwise lovely place and a lovely time."

  • "Went here for Restaurant Week and loved it. We were not treated like second class citizens because we ordered off the RW menu but received excellent service and to-die-for dishes. Everything was inventive from a roasted octopus that tasted like bacon (how can you go wrong?) to a pasta with chunks of rabbit. The one gripe I have is that our waitress took 15 minutes to return our credit cards; we were the only patrons left in the restaurant. It seemed to have slipped her mind."

  • "I am so happy to have Fishtag in the 'hood. THe waiters are always so friendly - never rushing the diners (which they could do easily as I am a talker and take a while to get around to ordering. The menu is nicely laid out - items are grouped with suggested wine and beer pairings in the margins. The items are also color coded to indicate which is lighter fare. Great apps and every time I have the special fish of the day, it's been terrific. Light - healthy - flavorful. I keep wanting to try the lobster bucatini and the sheepsmilk dumplings - but I am trying to be good. Oh - the high ceiling in the back (and the skylight) expand this small space and adds a nice natural light."

  • "I went here with my dad for a little weeknight dinner. I had been here before for a quick bite at the bar, at which time I got the smoked octopus which was amazing. It tasted like sausage, so tender and smokey. The dinner with my dad was nice as well. The inside is nice and casual but not too casual. The server was helpful when we decided what half bottle of wine we wanted to drink with our meal. We shared a shrimp appetizer that was delicious. Then my dad had the lobster pasta dish which was very flavorful. I had the branzino and it was also very nicely done. I love seafood and the dishes are unique and interesting. Definitely would return again to sit down or to sit at the bar. They had a comfortable bar for eating and drinking"

  • "The food was delicious! We had a kale salad with smoked trout for starters. I had the branzino, stuffed w/ homemade head cheese. I was hesitant because I've never had head cheese. This was absolutely phenomenal! My friend had the lobster pasta (don't recall exact name of the dish) and it was also delicious. The portions were very good as well. I would recommend for the food. The service was a little slow, but they were friendly and we didn't mind as we were catching up over a glass of wine."

  • "Really enjoyed dinner here Saturday night. The Farro salad is a must. I liked that you have the option to order wine by the half glass. Only complaint would be that the food comes out very fast, so you need to make an active effort not to be rushed, but otherwise everything was great."

  • "Mediterranean food. Really delicious. Like the UWS exposed brick and light wood. Simple airy feel despite ground floor location. 60s music nowhere near as interesting as the rest of the package. Dim lighting combined with a faint menu is not a great combination. Wish they served lunch."

  • "I usually love their lamb burger, but it was just not as good as previous visits. Too much sauce, overall kind of mushy. Is there a new cook? It's become a pattern that they are out of the wine that we order. Understandable for this to happen every once in a while, but at this point, have to wonder whether they should contract their wine list and have the bottles they advertise available. And I do believe other reviewers are right that a touch-up, and even a re-design, is in order. The back dining space is OK, but the forward bar spaces are very disjointed and generally unappealing. I still love this place and will continue to come back."
