A word from FISH PUBLIC
FISH PUBLIC is the newest neighborhood restaurant concept from Tracy Borkum and Urban Kitchen Group, located in the heart of Kensington in the previous Kensington Grill location. Heading up the heart of the house is Executive Chef Jordan Davis; a fresh new culinary talent recently arrived to San Diego. Jordan brings experience from Nancy Oakes’ multi-James Beard winning Boulevard in San Francisco as well as the Food & Wine recognized nose-to-tail restaurant, Animal in Los Angeles. Davis’ seafood menu features distinct regional fare from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Craft cocktails, draft and bottled beer and beautiful wines have been hand selected to pair well with each offering available on the menu.

Diner Reviews
  • "Fish Public is perfect! Out server Kylie was so helpful and lovely. Things to order: beet salad, ceviche, fish tacos, and fish and chips!"

  • "Shouldn't be a surprise that the folks who created Cucina Urbana created something new that's even better. Wonderful combination of appetizers, small plates and large entrees that present fish in a variety of new ways. Our party of 3 had sole, Escobar and soft tacos, each with generous sides including the fabulous Brussels sprouts. The Escobar and sole were wonderful and the tacos made from fresh broiled fish were also very good. The wine list was small, but still had excellent choices. Service was right up there with the Cucina restaurants, friendly, knowledgable, and attentive. This is a great concept perfectly executed with outstanding food. The portions are large and the prices are more than reasonable. We will be back, hopefully soon."

  • "I come to Fish Public despite the absurd name because it's such a pleasing, upscale place right in my hood. Design, feel, and service are truly outstanding. But it baffles me that a place so oriented to fish doesn't actually have one on the menu. Well, yes, there's the whole fish dinner complete with head and tail. But when I think of "fish," I want to be able to order a nice, clean, healthy, light filet or steak of salmon or halibut or whatever. Everything else is teeny little fried things. The chicken and the burger are nothing like the former restaurant (Kensington Grill) had. But apparently I'm the only one who feels that way, as people come in droves - so many you can't hear yourself think! Yeah I know - First World problems."

  • "My Mom and I were here for Fish Public's Friday's special fish and chips dinner. The chef changes the type of fish for dish often and it is always perfect. My husband enjoyed the curry muscles which were fantastic. The place is so well done inside, the staff is gloriously engaged and helpful, and we always have a wonderful, delicious time."

  • "my favorite was the grilled octopus starter....very tender and flavorful. also amused to find a version of the elusive arancini- something i first discovered in a high school cooking class and have been fascinated with ever since. not too many restaurants serve it, so when i come across it on the menu, i need to have it! This version was filled with lobster. The lobster was not very detectable but overall it was yummy."

  • "This was my 4th time at Fish Public, and I was not disappointed. It can get a little loud sometimes, but the ambiance is great and the food is always top notch. Our server was also a fabulously knowledgeable and friendly guy. A+ I'll be back for sure."

  • "brussel sprouts and bouillabaisse were very good, ooke and wedge salad were only ok. Martinis were good!"

  • "Read lots of reviews before we went. We were pleasantly surprised by our experience. The octopus is really amazing...I still cannot believe it was octopus. I was more tender than a a piece of chicken! I didn't care for the "tomato mush" it was on top of...I would have preferred a much lighter olive oil or something, plus I couldn't even see the octopus there was so much of the tomato stuff. It was still amazing...My husband had the whole fish. He said "wow" out loud ever single bite! I had the short ribs. Very delicious...it tasted and looked almost like filet minion. We also had the ceviche...good, but not life changing. Our server was also very good. The only bad thing was the cocktail I ordered....Something like "margarita pina"...Yuk!"

  • "Great drinks. Great service. Mostly great food but the Fluke fish was dry, overcooked and tasteless. Skip this option and you'll have a great meal."

  • "Excellent upgrade from Kensington Grill. Very flexible menu for price conscious eaters."

  • "Smaller menu, but nice options. Great food and beer. I recommend the whole fish"

  • "Had 5:30 reservations for a Friday night and were seated promptly...the place was just starting to fill up. Our server was extremely pleasant and we never felt rushed throughout our dinner. Started with the Fried Octopus as an appetizer (read so many good reviews about it) and it was fine...nothing we were over-the-moon about. For dinner, hubby ordered the swordfish with carrot puree and I had the fish tacos. Both were good but again, nothing extraordinary about either dish."

  • "Great location, great food, price medium, great 1/2 price Wednesdays. Very loud, not too good for visiting. Noticed an outdoor patio area as I was leaving. Would prefer that next time."

  • "I will be back!!!! Excellent food and service. Decor and atmosphere was really nice as well."

  • "ordered fish tacos that were too spicy even although i was assured by the server that the spicy sauce would be served on the side"

  • "Fish Public offers a delightful dining experience and the menu has a wide variety of fish dishes, small plates and great desserts. We ordered the baby beets, fish tacos, shrimp & grits, mac & cheese, and the brownie for dessert all dishes were exceptional. I want to thank our server Mazen for the excellent customer service and menu recommendations, I look forward to dining at Fish Public again soon."

  • "Nice décor, very comfortable. Pretty good variety on menu though they were sold out of the whole fish by the time we arrived at 6:30 on a Tuesday night. Terrific mussels - spicy, and beautiful crab cake. Wine very fairly priced. Efficient service. Will definitely go back."

  • "I was there with a business associate early-ish on a Wednesday night, so I didn't get the "full experience" of normal restaurant activity, service, etc. We sat at the bar and had a fantastic meal of swordfish pan-grilled with beure noire and a carrot puree and it was really, really good. I rarely order swordfish because it is often over-cooked and too dry. This was on the mark. The side rises we ordered were also excellent - roasted brussels sprouts and a warm kale and egg dish - excellent. The bar tender was very attentive and the service was great. I'll definitely go back."

  • "Was not impressed with the food. Very run of the mill and lackluster. Service was slow and even though our waiter apologized several times, it was a bit frustrating. Had oysters and the fried okra for appetizers & cod as an entree. Dessert was also just ok, nothing unique or special. Probably will not return. Too many other great spots to enjoy in San Diego."

  • "I will probably give this place a second chance one day but I wasn't impressed on my first visit. Food wasn't great for the price you pay. Drinks were good so if you go for happy hour it would probably be a good choice. Atmosphere was nice and service was good."

  • "Would have given 4 but second order of grilled octopus was burnt which shows a lack of consistency from the kitchen. The rest of the meal was darn good and the service was terrific."

  • "Happy hour between 5 and 6:30 when draft is only $3.50 and tacos $2 each (Tues.) Steamed mussels and grilled octopus were fresh, plum and done just right. Presentation was contemporary. Roasted cauliflower soup was so good too."

  • "We went for the Valentines Day special pre-fixe ($45/person) and had a lovely appetizer soup of roast cauliflower & chanterelles which was outstanding, but the pieces de resistances, were the braised short ribs. They were so tender and succulent they didn't require a knife (or teeth really...) The dessert beignets were a little not so fluffy & slightly tough, but still yummy, & chocolate fudge brownie with vanilla bean ice cream, topped with almond toffee bits were to-die-for!! All in all, it was a delicious dinner, but a kind of noisy, (we opted to sit on the same side of our 1/2 booth to hear each other.) I loved the "food check" ticket for our to go bag, redeemed at the front in a cold case. Couldn't leave those ribs behind!"

  • "Options for reservation for 2 with Open Table were 5 or 9pm. We called to see if we could get a later table. After much consideration, the gentleman who answered grudgingly offered us 5:30 or much later. We arrived at 5:30 and were seated right away. We were surprised how difficult making a reservation was; the place was 20% full. Service was EXTREMELY slow with "sorry, but..." from our server. The food was reasonable, but nothing "signature", "farm fresh" or "fish fresh" and nothing the least bit novel. There was a secret word from their Facebook page to get a few dollars off drinks, but there was another delay while the server had to get a manager's approval for our "discount". We thought we found something fun.... nah."

  • "This was my second time at Fish Public. First time was great. Shrimps and grits were excellent. This time we had the same thing and it was not good. The shrimp were over cooked and the entire dish was swimming in the sauce. We also had the crispy okra which was great last time but very greasy this time around. The service was slow and way too much time in between courses. Not sure if I will return."

  • "Loved the food. We had the Valentine's Day Special Menu with Wine Pairing. The paired wines arrived really late for the appetizer, and late with the entrée. It was on time for dessert. They need to coordinate this better. When they cleared the appetizer, they cleared utensils as well which is fine however when the entrée arrived new utensils weren't provided, and after a while, we resorted to self help so we could eat."

  • "We loved the food. Whole roasted fish from Cyprus was amazing. Fish and chips delicious although I didn't think the fries were anything special. The smoked octopus appetizer and beet and goat cheese salad were delicious-would highly recommend trying these two as starters. Nice casual atmosphere and great service. We will definitely visit again."

  • "The food took WAY TOO long to be served The french fries were TOO salty, had to order new batch without salt. The beignets were too hard to eat, not light and fluffy The servers were great, but the it took almost an hour to get our food."

  • "Excellent food, shrimp and grits was great, fish and chips and tacos also pronounced good, vegetable sides excellent. Servers were very helpful and knowledgeable. Will go again."

  • "We always enjoy Cucina Urbana and wanted to try FP... we're glad we tried it. Our server was very nice and well informed. We liked our seats. Dinner was okay... nothing was wrong at all ( well maybe the grilled octopus was a bit TOO grilled), but none of it was really anything that grabbed us. We thought that maybe sitting out front on a warm summer evening, or a lovely spring afternoon might enhance it all, but on a cool winter night we just weren't feeling it."

  • "Tracy Bokum's star in Kensington is fading. Each time we come back to our neighborhood fish place, it seems to slip a little more, and only surprises us with disappointment. This time, the appetizers were fabulous, but the larger plates didn't live up to expectations. The octopus is always wonderful - just the right amount of char and melts in your mouth. I think the fish and chips had hung out under the heat lamp for a little too long. The batter was chewy, not crispy, and a little oily. The fish inside flaked nicely, so it was salvageable. Wasn't that crowded and we had to send semaphore signals to get a second drink. Overall, not the kind of night you expect for $150 for 2."

  • "Our server was very attentive and friendly. The fish, both the salmon and yellowtail, was very tasty but pricy at $23 each for a 5oz serving that came with one side."

  • "Our experience at Fish Public was great from the moment we walked in until we left. The Resturant week menu had a good variety of items to choose from. There were 3 of us and we each ordered something different & shared. Everything was delicious! Our server provided excellent service, she was helpful, pleasant and extremely knowledgeable with her restaurant. We will definitely dine at Fish Public again...."

  • "Had an amazingly delicious and fun dinner at Fish Public during Restaurant Week. We were a party of 3, we all ordered different menu items all the way down to the sides so we could each taste a little bit of everything. We all loved everything. Big stand outs were the calamari starter, butternut squash soup, shrimp & grits entree, brussels sprouts side, mac & cheese side, chocolate & peanut butter bread pudding, and the oatmeal raisin cookie from the cookies & 'milk' dessert. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Decor is fresh and fun. I will definitely make a return visit."

  • "Food offerings were very good. The restaurant week offerings were cheaper off the regular menu so we did that. Noise was up there even with a few empty tables. But an overall good experience and we will go again when in the neighborhood."

  • "We started with some cocktails that were inventive and delicious. The appetizer and entrees presentation was exceptional, unique and it tasted as good as it looked! Our server was attentive, informative and provide exceptional service. We are looking forward to going back soon!"

  • "This restaurant took over the Kensington Grill space. Fresh decor. Great appetizers. Too much time between first and second course. Fish and chips not noteworthy. Will go again and try something else on menu"
