Diner Reviews
  • "I ordered the Nisoise salad (sp?) and it was very paltry. It was tasty, but not enough to satisfy. It could have included more vegs, which are cheap for the restaurant, which makes me wonder why there were no greens besides the beans..... I added a skewer of scallops which was very tasty, but again, paltry for the money."

  • "I have been a constant diner at The Fish House Restaurant for many years. The ambience, a park setting, is one of the best in town. This passed Friday, my friends and I booked a luncheon reservation to celebrate a friend's birthday. Our servers were helpful and congenial. We wanted an outside table, but the only one available did not have an umbrella.... the accommodating server brought one. The menu, is disappointing as it no longer contains some of the choices as when Karen Barnaby was manager/chef. I ordered a dual fish plate consisting of smoked cod and trout, it tasted good and was well prepared. I would have liked a little more salad and more fennel in the salad. The dessert, a chocolate concoction was tasty."

  • "As we were celebrating our 47th anniversary, we wanted a special seafood restaurant in the West End. This is the place!. From the time we walked in the door until we left we felt special , and no, they didn't know it was a special occasion. The service was outstanding from our server Jane, and the food was delicious. We had the Cajun oysters, the Cannery Cod and the Trio of fish. All were excellent We ended the meal with the Earl Grey creme brûlée. If you want a delicious and special meal, definitely dine at the Fish House."

  • "They did so much to please you. It was impressive. Robyn and Martin did a great job and the chef helped make it a wonderful experience"

  • "A great place for tourists and locals alike. Wonderful setting at the edge of Stanley Park, by the tennis courts and the egales and herons nesting places . Setting: tables are set sufficiently apart for privacy, enough formality to take the whole family for a special occasion. Great for for all meals. Afternoon tea should be considered. Food: something for everyone without being a boring menu. Lives up to its Fish House name. Service is friendly."

  • "We've been at this restaurant for lunch on a beautiful sunny day (05/16/2014). We chose the famous afternoon tea of them and we were not disappointed. Wonderful experience for the eyes and the palate."

  • "Spent the evening at the Fish House with an out-of-town customer to celebrate his retirement. Split a crab cake appetizer -- ample portion, tasty, bit heavy for my liking, but server didn't know what was in it and had to ask about the scallion drizzle. Dinner server Jake was knowledgeable and friendly. Kitchen accommodated a request to split two full plates 1/2-1/2. Halibut and salmon were both perfectly prepared according to our guest. My sable fish was excellent. My blueberry-and-thyme sorbet was interesting and flavourful. Nice spot for a pleasant quiet evening."

  • "Beautiful setting noted, quiet and warm. Wine list was excellent but expensive (not too) and the fish choice was small but selective, not overwhelming. The Sable fish was not how I remembered it from previous years with the quality slipping somewhat but certainly good. I was seated next to a potted palm which was intent on poking me in the head, but was quietly moved away. The oyster selection was short as most of the little beasties had been served to a previous large party, leaving the restaurant short of the tasty small ones and the remaining ones were a little "off". Generally, on this occasion, I would say it was just "good"."

  • "This is my favourite place to go. I have never had a bad experience and the service is wonderful, prompt and never disruptive."

  • "The only real draw for the Fish House is it's location in Stanley Park. The interior still has good bones but overall it is run down and without much character remaining - it is better seen at night. The food served at our last brunch visit looked and tasted as though it had been sitting under heat lamps. The lack of basic garnish left the bland food completely beige. Our server was charming and kind and made a big difference to an otherwise disappointing experience. I really want to continue to visit and enjoy the Fish House but it will be a long time before I give it another try."

  • "After running the half marathon our group of six enjoyed good food, good wine and excellent service."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "The appetizers were the only highlight. The calamari and oysters were delicious. Other than that, all of our entrees (artic char, halibut, seafood risotto and short ribs) were mediocre. Even our son, who is a clam chowder lover, was unimpressed. We had a better meal the night prior at a chain restaurant for half the price. Would not go back."

  • "We shared the surf and turf and it was just amazing. Perfect amount of steak, crab, scallops, etc....we almost licked our plates...it was that delicious."

  • "We had a table in a corner of the room so it was a good mix of private but still part of the room. Service was attentive and considerate - one of our guests received flowers and the waiter brought a vase to keep them in. Food was very good. Good flavours and presentation. Wonderful wine list with lots of choices - familiar and some unknown so there was new wines to try. Bathrooms are not disabled accessible - and the stairs are steep."

  • "We have gone to the fish house many times before; however, not since having our son. I had no idea how family friendly it was and how sweet the staff was with him. They have high chairs, crayons, a kids menu and kid friendly drink options. We really enjoyed spending father's day brunch here and will go back again with the family soon!"

  • "It was my first time there with my family. The food and service were good. For sure will go again."

  • "Aside from the ambience, the food and the service was disappointing. We ordered the seafood hash. Sounded great on the menu. 2 of the mussels were bad. There were 5 tiny frozen shrimps; even 2 prawns would had sufficed and elevated the dish. The "salmon" were salmon bits, which again is not what you would expect from a fine dining dish. No bowl was offered for the empty mussel and clam shells. Overall, we would not recommend if you want to impress your guests."

  • "Having booked the table from the UK way back in April, we were surprised to have been shoved on probably the worst table in the restaurant and clients, who were walk-ins were seated at much better locations. The Calamari starter was, frankly, overcooked rubbish. We followed that with one "simply grilled" and one "butter poached" halibut. The fish was pretty average in terms of cooking skills and taste. I don't know where the wild mushrooms were in the Polenta, but it was pretty dry and tasteless. Staff were reasonably attentive and courteous, although the front desk girl said "like your dress" to just about every customer when we were there, not exactly sincere!"

  • "We had been looking forward to dining again at the Fish House since our last visit to Vancouver 5 years ago. Our first choice for our first night in the city. We had to ask for water and the main course (speciality of the house) was very slow to arrive. Part of it had gone cold. With the help of the waiter we overcame that problem and took his recommendation for the best dessert. The poor man had to return as the messenger of bad news yet again - the dessert was no longer available. It is a great place and the waiter who served us handled the problems with efficiency and charm - but we did not expect to have to return a dish to have it reheated and re-plated. No compensation offered - not even a free glass of wine for the inconvenience."

  • "The seafood platter for two was amazing. Our waiter was very attentive, and the dessert strawberry crunch ice cream was devious. Loved the cocktail list too. I chose a refreshing Fresca Pineapple concoction. Perfect setting and beautiful view of the park."

  • "We have a family dinner on the occassion of graduation of one of our sons from UBC. We have chosen the restaurant based on Tripadviser's restaurant ranking list. The coner seats were very nice and the sea food platter, clam chowder and a desert were excellent. The staff who attended our table was excellent too. He recommended a nice affordable wine."

  • "Our family of 4 chose this restaurant to celebrate my husband's birthday. We loved the warm bread. The kids discovered Shirley Temples in Canada are made differently than in the States. Highlights of our starter, the Hot Platter, were the avocado spring rolls and calamari. My kids ordered Mix Grill and Seafood Rissotto Carbonara. My husband and I shared the Seafood Platter for 2. All the seafood in our dishes were perfectly prepared-yes, I sampled everyone's dish! The Mix Grill also converted my son into a mushroom fan. We chose the Sorbet and Lemon Meringue as the "lightest" options after a generous sized meal. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and went for a walk in Stanley Park to watch the sunset. A perfect evening."

  • "we have ordered seafood platter and a mixed grill dish with a bottle of white wine. Everything is perfect and delicious. It's worthy experience albeit the food is a bit pricey. we would defo come back when next in Vancouver again."

  • "We no longer live in the area so hadn't been back since it became The Fish House. I decided to surprise my husband for his 55+ birthday! The hostess was wonderful but the waiter was rushing us; at the next table the menu was explained in detail so we feel our choices would have been different so were disappointed. I made a reservation explaining the details of our visit, it was a Monday so expected some privacy but the guests next to us were about 21/2 feet away so we could not converse. We topped the evening off with his 'fave' Spanish coffee=watery/tasteless; then no waiter to be seen! We have visited many restored venues, this one is in great need of some TLC! For the price point I expected more; complaining there just spoils the night."

  • "Had a great meal here before a concert at the Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. Service was great, we had a very helpful and cheerful waiter. All of the seafood we ordered was great and fresh. It was a beautiful day in the park and we were able to enjoy the deck while we dined. "

  • "Hadn't been to the Fish House in 10 years. Went for dinner with other couples on a Saturday night. The place looks a bit old and rundown. It did not have the feel of a nice high end restaurant which we were expecting. Raw oysters were delicious but our dinner was just OK. I ordered the Cannery Cod and found the meal to be very heavy and greasy. Way too much lobster oil. My friend ordered medium rare steak and got a very rare steak. They could not get my friends dirty mary right. Gave up after 2 tries. For the amount of money we spent, it was not worth it. Many better options in Vancouver in the same price range...Blue Water Cafe and Joe Fortes."

  • "We truly enjoyed the 5 course menu. It was such a lovely way to spend our evening, with the wine pairing fleet as well. Afterwards, a walk down to the ocean and along the seawall made the evening perfect!"

  • "The group of seven of us were very pleased with the dinner. A little bit of waiting for a few things (mainly bar drinks) but the place was busy and there was also a wedding reception in the large room. Overall we all liked it."

  • "I went for tea, which was very nice, but endded up going crazy over the French fries that came with my husband's meal. The only place I've had French Fries that good was Paris. The location was beautiful with lots of big windows and there was a patio which would be nice to try sometime. "

  • "I went here with my 10 year old daughter. The main menu is great. The risotto was excellent and the kids menu made it inexpensive for younger diners. I would highly recommend this restaurant in the heart of Stanley Park right beside the Tennis Courts. "

  • "My wise and I ordered the three cheese omelet. It was slow coming, and the omelets looked like pieces of yellow leather folded over None the less we tried a few bites but could not continue. It was tasteless. The waiter admitted they were prepared in advance!! They looked like they may have come from a package out of the freezer or something. It didn't even resemble an omelet. My son's chicken sandwich was also very poor. The chicken consisted of 80% batter. We asked to speak to the manager who tried to save the situation by offering us a complimentary from the dessert menu. This was not acceptable and he finally agreed to write off the total bills for the three of us. We have just lost another restaurant from our list - disappointed. "

  • "Overall the food is excellent and the location divine but it is over-priced and the amount of food is very small. If I have to order a $15 appetizer just to be somewhat full. Its not worth it. If I do recommend this restaurant to someone else in the future I would make sure to add "it costs a small fortune". "
