Diner Reviews
  • "Stumbled on First Crush when staying in a nearby Hotel. Comfortable and low key but serves great food. We really enjoyed the beet salad and crab macoroni. We made a point to eat here a second time on a follow up trip. Now on our list of places to eat when in the city."

  • "Went there before the theater and did not have much time. Our waiter was very understanding and the service was very good. The food was a bit hit and miss though. The salmon and the beet salad were excellent. The arugula salad was a bit dry (almost no dressing) and the lobster ravioli had a slightly fishy taste. Desserts were excellent."

  • "Tasty food, even for vegetarians, nice presentation and good service. They cheerfully accommodated our food allergy restrictions. We're coming back here to have dinner when we have a theater date in S.F."

  • "We had dinner before going to the theatre. In fact, if you showed your theatre tickets you were given free of charge 2 fantastic desserts of your choice as a thank you. Both delicious! Robert our waiter was fantastic. I enjoyed his personality and suggestions on the entrees. Professional and "real"... Scallops were fantastic, wine wonderful and again Robert... Fantastic!!!! I will come again. Thank you, Marilyn & Vicky....."

  • "It had been a while since I had been to First Crush and although the meals and service were fine before we just forgot about it with so many other options in the area, I received a BBE BlackboardEats offer for a a bottle of wine with a minimum order of an entree per person so I scheduled a dinner with my favorite Tuesday night people and although the staff were noticeably new they were efficient, kind and knowledgable. The wine paired great with everything from the Kobe burger to the Portabello mushroom and dinner was delisious. The dessert flight was decadent and fun! The manager Amanda and all the staff very personable. It was a great night and I immediately recommended FirstCrush to all my social media friends that night."

  • "Was hesitant to try because of mixed reviews - which I don't get. The food was incredible and the wine flights novel and well-chosen. The service was outstanding. Friendly yet professional. We appreciatne organic and locallly sourced food well-prepared at a reasonable price. Couldn't be happier. We will be back!"

  • "My Fiancé and I went here for dinner before seeing a show at the Orpheum theater. Great food, the flights of wine were convenient."

  • "I went here to meet up with my girlfriends from high school. We were seated downstairs and with the curtains it was like we had a private dining room. The wine flight selection was good. We loved the scallops and beet salad."

  • "We love the food at First Crush but we specifically requested a place where it was quiet and there was just no place to put us where we did not have to listen to others LOUDLY talking about what they wanted to talk about-- people were yelling and boisterous and happy but that coupled with music that could not be turned off made it way too NOISY!!!! I will not be taking anyone there who needs and wants a lovely quiet dining experience. I would have appreciated a phone call telling us there were no quiet spaces as we had requested so we could pull our business and go elsewhere. They did not bother! that was irritating."

  • "We needed an early dinner and this was just the spot. Convenient to BART and dowtown locations. Good range of entrees and small plates and an extensive wine list."
    Dined on 3/10/2014
  • "We are frequent diners at First Crush and it seems to be changing. They keep raising the price of their lobster mac and cheese - boo! Food is good but the speed of our food coming out was quite slow. We wanted to do dessert but we did not have time. Wish they would bring back the brief happy hour that they had. This time the price wasn't quite worth the visit."

  • ". Service was attentive and excellent. Spinach pasta with peas and filet special were highlight of meal. Others had small plates which were received with mixed enthusiasm. Well prepared but similar to so many other restaurants"

  • "Great food and wine list. The owner made her way around to each table offering wine and food recommendations which made you feel welcomed."

  • "The food was excellent--very fresh and good-sized portions. Our server was attentive and drinks and food came promptly, but we never felt rushed. The only down note was the post-meal decaf coffee, which was really watery and weak. When this was pointed out to our server, he offered to substitute with decaf Americanos, which were a big improvement. Everyone in our party of five (including one vegan and one gluten-free diner) said they would return."

  • "My girlfriend and i came in the day after Valentine's day because we wanted to try their regular menu items instead of the prix fixe menu. It was definitely worth waiting for!! The scallops were exceptional, the ribeye was mouthwatering, and the oysters were out of this world. The service was good. The manager was very friendly, and made sure our visit was pleasant from the moment that she sat us to the end of the meal, when she came over to see if everything had met our expectations, which it had already far surpassed. I would highly recommend this beautiful restaurant that is just around the corner from the equally beautiful Union Square."

  • "It took almost 45 minutes before my water arrived, and it only did because I asked the hostess, since our waiter was no where in sight. The restaurant was busy because it was Valentine's Day, but that was unacceptable."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "My previous visit was great, but this time out was just ok. Maybe because it was pre-fix menu for Valentine's Day, but most of our food was delivered a bit on the cold side and had to be reheated. The menu itself was appealing and the servers were attentative, providing a rose for every guest which was a nice touch. I'll return, but maybe not for a pre-packaged occassion like VD or NYE."

  • "Is it by design that appetizers are served after entrees? Our food came so fast, and nearly all at once, on Saturday night that you'd think they had plates prepared ahead of time. Sure, you'd like to turn the table. OK, we ordered several plates with the intention to share. But the experience seemed rushed. The long long wait for after-dinner decaf (it's brewing.... it's brewing.... it's.... decaf espresso!) belied the table turning priority. Food was generally good -- the scallops were phenomenal. A couple of the wines terrific."

  • "I had a party of 6 and we all enjoyed the appetizers, drinks (alcoholic and non-) and desserts but the main entrees were just average across the board. We were about 50/50 ordering off of the dine about town menu and regular menu. Maybe it was an off night. Unfortunate because the staff was awesome, the ambiance was good for certain occasions and the prices weren't that bad."

  • "Wine list was good. The cocktails we ordered were spot on. We ordered the two specials of the day, both delicious. My only complaint is that the food arrived at table not particularly warm. Seemed like it may have sat around on a counter somewhere before timely delivery. Service was very nice in that they were attentive when needed but left you alone, Euro-style, so you could actually enjoy your company instead of constantly wave away intrusive servers as at some American restaurants."

  • "We came here for dine about town week. A group of 3 ladies shared 2 dine about town sets of meals and added a lobster Mac and cheese appetizer. All the food was fresh and things I would have never tried cooking at home. We love their gnocchi appetizer and grotto misto appetizer. The burger was ok. But the lobster Mac and cheese was amazing. They also had a great wine selection, in a flight or by the glass. The restaurant has 2 levels. The first floor is very cozy and intimate. There is also a basement level that's bigger for larger groups. Dimmed light ambiance. I would come back here."

  • "Food and ambiance was good. I was disappointed that I had another guest that joined us a few minutes late and the hostess did not have a record of my reservation name and the person had to eat alone."

  • "I've been to First Crush multiple times and have had great food and wine every trip. The restaurant is attractive, has a nice atmosphere, and good service. We went for dinner on Christmas Eve and had a great time. I would highly recommend!"

  • "We had a wonderful experience. The wine flights were generous and the food was very good. Service was very good and the bar tender makes a fantastic Hendricks martini."

  • "The food was surprisingly good here and they have a reasonably priced pre-theater price fixed menu. Almost everything we ordered was quite tasty - garden salad, butternut squash risotto and grilled salmon - except for the white chocolate bread pudding which was not hot and tasted like white bread. My husband also had two glasses of wine from their limited list of recommendations and both wines were excellent. My only complaint was that it was cold and drafty sitting with my back to the window. Also, it was very crowded when we left with lots of people in the entry way waiting to be seated. Therefore, I recommend you make a reservation, as we did!"

  • "We've been coming here regularly for about two years - every other month or so. Food is always incredible and prepared properly. This last visit was packed with a large party in the lower level - waiter, although very busy, gave excellent, friendly service. Our food came out perfectly cooked and the wine flight was great. Very consistent dining experience whenever we come."

  • "Stopped here before the Book of Mormon. I ordered red wine flight with the Kobe burger. The burger was juicy & cooked perfectly. The wine flight paired perfectly & the pours were more than generous. My friend ordered the salmon & said it was very good. The service was fantastic. I will be dining here again,"

  • "The Chicken Marsala, while good, had no Marsala wine taste and the sauce was flavorless. Limited menu."

  • "I'm a local, so somewhat dubious about restaurants near lots of hotels. I'd been to First Crush many years ago and enjoyed it very much. A friend treated me to a wonderful show (and expensive), so I wanted to give back with a great dinner beforehand. Wow. Staff was alert, engaged and knew their food, wine and relevant local concerns (showtime). Food was all beyond what I had expected, and really impressed my friend (who has a lot more money than do I). The champagne was chilled in a very professional manner, and we were the "clean plate club," despite having lots to talk about. This really added a cherry to the top of a great evening. They even have really good devices to balance out the tables (SF has many wobbly floors)."

  • "We tried First Crush before the theater last weekend and all four of us were disappointed. The salmon was overcooked and dry, the risotto was thick and pasty and way too rich. The wine recommendation was so-so. We wouldn't bother returning."

  • "Good food but noise level makes it almost impossible to converse with your dinner companion."

  • "We split several small plates including a dessert and each had a flight of wine. Everything was delicious."

  • "Took my daughters to First Crush after watching Beauty and the Beast. The food was sophisticated enough for me and my foodie teen, but still appealing to my 10 year-old (she had the Kobe beef burger, and was in heaven). Super friendly service, and a great flight of bold reds...nice way to end a lovely day."

  • "We arrived at First Crush for New Years Eve unaware that it was a Pre Fix menu. We could not eat a 5 course meal and considered leaving. I had already ordered a cocktail and would not stiff the house so I asked for the manager. (It turned out she was the new OWNER, Amanda Burman) and she came to the table, listened VERY graciously to my story and after a moment's thought, said she would make a special accommodation for us since it was obvious we were surprised and not trying to scam her. We were allowed to order as if it was an ala carte menu at regular dinner rates and we had a WONDERFUL meal with just an entrée and desert. I also ordered a good bottle of wine. We have been to First Crush before and WE WILL BE BACK. Our thanks to AMANDA."

  • "Our Christmas Eve in San Francisco ended with dinner at First Crush. Quiet and quaint - would definitely recommend! My husband and oldest daughter had the Raw Oysters for their appetizers-they thoroughly enjoyed them. Salads were absolutely wonderful and quite large - could have shared 2 amongst the 4 of us. Rack of Lamb, Filet Mignon and Wild Salmon were our entree choices - outstanding! Server was a little "dry" - perhaps because it was Christmas Eve and he wanted to be at home. Cocktails, wine and after dinner drinks were ordered also - really good!"

  • "Our first clue that this was not the "romantic" place our hotel recommended was when we were seated, as a couple, in the lower level where there was one table of 8 already being seated and another table of 10 being set up. Soon, we gave up on conversation. We were then abandoned by our waiter. He took drink order (but rushed off before we could even finish the sentence to order an appetizer) and came back much later to take dinner order, and that's the last we saw of him. We had to summon someone to fill long-empty water glasses and even to order wine. The person who most often answered our summons told us she's the new owner and comped us $25, so I do hope that they learn that there's more to this gig than filling tables."

  • "Have been going to First Crush for at least 4 years (initially upon the recommendation of a hotel concierge). The quality of the food and wine list have kept me coming back for more every time we are in San Francisco. Highly recommended is the Kobe burger (make sure to get the truffle fries) as well as any number of the appetizers. More recently the "fritto misto" has been a real treat, it has a great combination of sweet and spicy flavors. For wine lovers, the California heavy list is reasonably priced. For those that are dining solo (or groups that can't get to a meeting of the minds), the wine flights offer a great opportunity to try a few different things without investing in a full bottle. Summary - great place with friendly staff"

  • "We chose First Crush due to location and reviews before we went to The Book of Mormon. The staff was friendly and attentive. They offer a pre theatre prixe fixed menu that was outstanding. The salmon was fabulous. My husband had the special of lamb ragou ( had a much nicer name) and he thoroughly enjoyed that. My only criticism was that the soup was not served warm enough. We have already recommended this restaurant. excellent food and good value."
